OSU-COM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You too Phange, rootin' for ya.

Thanks a ton; I've really worked hard to get into OSU. I don't know what my odds are at this point, being waitlisted so early. Hopefully they're good, though. I tried to improve my application as best as I could between last year and this year.

Have you called them to see why you were waitlisted and what you can do to help that?

And you are on it so early. If you look at last years thread from around this time a lot of people waitlisted got in!

Good luck!

It's only been a half-week since I found out, and I've been moving to a new house. I'll give them a call today.

Thanks!

No call here. I called around 2:30 to ask if I could meet with them to find out how to improve my application but they were in a meeting. No response. Congrats if you get a call! Maybe they will call tomorrow. Ah, speculation...

It's like waiting for MCAT scores all over again...

And then you'll wait to start. And for your first exam scores. And for step 1, step 2, the PE. Then residency interviews. Then graduation. And on and on. Waiting is a huge part of this whole process from apply to med school through getting your first job after residency.

I understand there is plenty of waiting throughout this process of being a physician, and as each example you mention approaches I will be antsy and excited. I view my excitement as a good thing, since I haven't been nearly this revved up about two other schools that I've interviewed and got accepted to.

The exciting spirit at OSU-COM is very contagious. It makes waiting harder when it is a school you want. I think people observe these forums to have an added source for information about a difficult process. Of equal importance is the ability to share this experience with those who understand. I wish you all good luck and more importantly, success!

Hey all,

I am trying to start a Class of 2015 facebook group, but facebook now makes you invite people before you can make the group...

anyone want to pm me with your facebook page so I can invite you to join?

Thanks!

Good luck everyone who is waiting to hear!

Denco I can always help you start it. You have my info, or you should.

To my knowledge, calls still haven't gone out. Seems odd to me but they will be going out by Tuesday because Wednesday Break starts at 1:00pm so it will have to be before then.

Do you think that it's possible/feasible to take the MCAT in January, apply by Feb 1, and be accepted to enter for the class of 2015?
Just wondering...

No.

Taking the January MCAT will get scores back ~ month later so around 20th of Feb. Getting AACOMAS verified, submitted, and all the red tape will not allow you to be in time.

Only exception is if you apply for Bridge which interviews for that pursue later on, or a combo degree like DO/MS or DO/PhD as those also go on later.

However, I recommend you save the money. Apply next cycle.

What if AACOMAS and everything is in, but the MCAT is just not competitive enough?

Only way a January MCAT is going to help with the current cycle is if you have interviewed by then and been waitlisted and are trying to improve your application. Submitting your app so late is a negative detractor as seen by the Adcom.

Yeah, I submitted my application in early February last application cycle and they told me I was lucky to even get an interview. They waitlisted me but dropped me from the final waitlist, probably for that very reason.

I hand-delivered my completed secondary in early July this time. Learned my lesson.

No call, but then again, I'm a waitlisted applicant so I'd wager my chances are lower than a recent interviewee.

For those of you admitted for the class of 2015, I'd recommend starting a class-specific thread here on SDN. But most everything is done through facebook which has already been set up for your class.

Good luck to everyone!

Other than talking to people, what is all done through facebook for the class? I don't have one and I didn't think I would be missing anything important.

Status - Phone on hip and ready to pick up.

Every time I see you post I keep expecting a "got accepted phone call" post. With your background and being IS, I'd be suprised to hear otherwise.

Hey Cellude, I can't remember your name but I was sitting next to you in the first conference room to your left. I was the one from BYU. I got an acceptance call last friday at about 2 pm in Utah (3 pm oklahoma time). I got the letter packet today with all the stuff to sign and instructions for enrolling. I thought a week was pretty fast to find out and I was not expecting anything until this week.

Hey, how is it going? I do remember you. Congrats on the acceptance!

Well bummer for the rest of us then. Do you mind posting your stats?
I am curious since I didn't think my interview went that bad.

I guess I will reach out with mine first.
31P/c3.7/IS with decent medical exposure and volunteering.

Here's my stats, though I think being OOS I'm in a different category. I didn't think I had a bad interview either...though I do admit it was hard to read the FP guy.

28O/c3.9/OOS 10 yrs of medical exposure and some volunteering.

Save me a seat in the wait-list room. I see I'm in good company. 😀
Stats: OOS, 30Q, 3.7s, Good volunteering, shadowing, etc.

those are some higher stats, no idea why you guys would be passed over; but then again I have no insight into the ADCOM mindset nor gameplan.

BUT! dont lose hope, For those from Arkansas we have a ton of people going here from there and after talking to a few most were waitlisted and accepted as early as January and as late as July. I have a feeling from as many OOS people that I know that were accepted, they have reached their Quota at the moment for OOS. Oklahoma has a requirement on a certain percentage of IS applicants. But post December slot fees, I am sure some OOS slots will open.

As far as IS, no idea...

Hey ya'll,

I was really pulling for you guys and those are AMAZING stats... I bet ya'll get in off the waitlist!!

Good luck in that and other acceptances as well!

I have a c3.91, s3.75, 29R. I don't want to make the ADCOM sound biased but they do love BYU students. They had met me when I toured in may, then again when they came out to BYU to recruit and even e-mailed me asking where my LORs were so that they could interview me and called me to set up the interview the day after they got my letters. I also served as a missionary in São Paulo Brazil for 2 years. I only had about 50 hours total of shadowing. I am in-state though because I am still an oklahoma resident because BYU is private and I never changed my residency. I don't know what else would help to figure out why you guys haven't heard anything yet.

Arkansas resident with decent stats and a healthy amount of clinical experience.

I'm not too worried because I already have an acceptance, and after three years of applying that is a huge relief in and of itself. However, I would much rather go to OSU than to any school I have interviewed at thus far this year. It's a combination of cost, location, and just the school in general. I really really liked the students and the faculty. I feel like OSU is a good fit for me, especially because I am leaning toward family practice and would like to live in a rural area close by to my family.

I'm hoping for an acceptance here soon (before I have to pay a $1250 acceptance fee on 12/14). Good luck to everybody else that is also waiting to hear back. It looks as if there are some stellar applicants here.

BTW everybody, Happy Thanksgiving

Hope everyone had an awesome Turkey Day! GL in upcomming finals and best of luck in the application process.

Questions:
How is Tulsa/Highway traffic nowadays?
Is commuting from OKC day of interview a good idea? Or should I just drive up the night before?
Anybody else interviewing this week?

I say you drive up the night before. The traffic wont be bad, but honestly do you want to have been up driving for 2.5 hours right before you interview? The interview sessions start early---9:00.

Yea, I was leaning toward the night before, and hadn't thought of it that way. Thanks!

The interview confirmation email stated interview sessions are from 9:00-11:50. What does everyone else do while they are waiting their turn? Just curious.

You'll be in a room near the lecture halls. Current students will come in and talk with you and you can talk with the other waiting interviewees.

Thanks!

I'm very excited😀

During our interview day they took us on tours while the other people were interviewing. They also let you leave to explore for a little while!

Congrats on the interview! When is it?!

Questions:

Highway 75 is done, I44 is about 65% done, and downtown loop is hell if I know. Its not bad, things have gotten much better from even just a few months ago.

Is commuting from OKC day of interview a good idea? Or should I just drive up the night before?
I stayed the night at a cheap hotel near the airport and drove in, be sure to allow plenty of time for traffic as you will be admist people in downtown traffic. If you do stay, I recommend the doubletree hotel. They shuttle, or you can drive and its a short 5 minute commute or so.

Anybody else interviewing this week?
Nope, considering I am a first year...

I believe you have to be there at 8, theres an hour intro and get to know us thing. Interviews run from 9-11:50. I wont be stopping by, far too much to study with finals starting Friday, however some people may be inclined to stop by. Us first years are in Dunlap which is opposite side of the building where you will be. 2nd years are right across from you in superior merkel.

Feel free to roam the school and get a feel, but remember most of us are tense because finals are just about to start!
