Ok, so I know it is early yet, but excitement is getting to me. Before too long, I will be heading to Columbus to look for a place to live for the next 4years. The places go pretty fast from what I have been told due to undergrads getting places as well.

So, is there anyone interested in becoming roommates for the next 4yrs. I am a 21yr old male (sorry ladies) from Ohio. I think 2-3 other roommates would be awesome. This way we can keep the cost down below $500 a month/person. If anyone is slightly interested, let me know. I will gather details and give it to those who reply within the next couple of months and nothing is until all who are interested have agreed. So let me know.

I live near OSU now (Upper Arlington, west of main campus but close to the vet school). I do have a second bedroom but it is rather small...I'm not actively looking for a roommate, but depending on my financial circumstances in the fall that may change. I'm also female and have a cat that eats all unguarded food and food-related items 🙂

Just some tips from an OSU undergrad and Columbus native - try to look for places on the west side of campus if you can. On the other side of campus, east of High Street is close to central campus and within walking distance of a lot of bars, the movie theater, and restaraunts, but can be high-crime depending on the street (High St. is the border between the campus/residential areas). If you do go east, try to stick between Summit and High and north of 13th Avenue or so. I've had a couple of bad experiences between Summit and 4th Street late at night, as a lot of the crime occurs the further east and/or the further south you go from campus. I think it's more of an issue for girls living alone than guys, but you've still got your car and property to think about.

The areas on the western side of campus tend to be safer - Upper Arlington is very close and a good area, but rents can be more expensive as it's one of the most "affluent" areas in Columbus (my apartment would beg to differ, but at least it's safe 🙂). Also, anything in this area will put you closer to the vet school.

I am getting really excited as well!!

How far ahead of time should someone go to look at places?

I'm getting really excited too and anxious to get started on moving and starting school. I'm a 29yr old female, married and I'd like to get a house to rent with a couple of other students. I do however have 1 large dog and a handful of cats (6 😳) so I'm banking on the fact that we all love animals. The cats are obnoxiously friendly and the dog is great unless you're an australian shepherd or border collie (she's "breedist"). Obviously she loves cats. I'm not loud, I do my own dishes and we come with a wii 😀.

I have loved living on campus in Undergrad, I think you have to do the typical college crappy housing thats close to all the crazy goings on once in your life, but four years later I cannot wait to be away. Unless you don't have a vehicle, I would not suggest living on campus around where the undergrads live. Maybe I'm jaded from living here the past 4 years, but the housing is more expensive yet they are much worse condition than off campus. The rental companies aren't great, if not terrible (avoid University Manners at ALL costs) you often have to deal with very loud neighbors, no parking, most places don't allow pets and the crime is rather high. If you are looking to live there, you need to look now because leases were starting to be signed the beginning of January. I completely agree with AgtOrange about where to live if you do in fact choose to live on campus.

There are plenty of places not far from campus that are in much better condition and cheaper. There is the Victorian Village (south of campus by a few blocks) Polaris Parkway and the Tuttle area (both North of campus by a few miles), Easton (North East of campus by a few miles) there are also the cities of Upper Arlington, Dublin and Grove City as well as housing in other areas around Columbus. I'll be living in Upper Arlington, which is a great area and a easy drive to campus. I have a roommate for next year but if anybody needs any help or has any questions I'd be happy to help. (ps I wouldn't knock living with the other sex, I'm a girl and lived with boys for two years and in some way prefer it to living with girls!)

I was definately planning to live off campus next year. The reason for this thread was to find potential roomates. As for knocking the females, sorry bout that, I much rather live with the guys.

I completely understand, for the most part I would rather live with guys too, haha. I'm sure there will be people though who don't know OSU housing stuff at all, I just hope that helps them. Good luck in your roommate search!

😱 For real!? Wow!

plus my girlfriend might want to kill me if I lived with other women.

😱 For real!? Wow!

I had no problem finding an apartment in May last year, and I know of others who found places in July and August...

It's campus that is the problem with signing leases later, there are still some available just not near as many. Most people I know living here next year have signed a lease already. Just saying it might be beneficial to look now.

Its campus? As in living on campus?

As an OOS student looking to get IS residency I was pretty much assuming I would have to live off campus in order to get a year round lease.

I have no real preference in roommates male versus female. I'm just hoping to find a place relatively close so it makes for an easy commute.

What Lagamorphlover is referring to is "off-campus" but it is directly off campus. It is the most popular area to live in in undergrad, but I would NOT suggest living their for vet school. You are walking distance to bars and the university (though not the vet school) but parking, noise, and rent prices are horrible. I always signed leases for that area in December/January.

Most vet students live off campus, but further off campus than the undergrad area. When looking at these places - they are much easier to get, usually cleaner and more affordable, and will be available all summer long. Typically, you will start getting emails in June of older students that have rooms available, and people in your class looking for roommates - so I would start looking then.

Personally, I think the Kenny/Henderson, and Bethel areas (north of the university) are the most popular vet student areas.

Do you guys know of places where you can stay while you look for a permanent home? I'm really not sure how this is going to work out for me, and I know I'll definitely have to make a couple of trips but I was wondering if anyone knew of any places that you can rent for like a month while you look for a more permanent type of housing. I would also need to bring my pets which consist of 2 small dogs, 2 cats, and 1 rabbit - so the place would have to be animal friendly. Thanks in advance. 😀

Hey Beanjamime, there are several Extended Stay Hotels that I know of up in Columbus. You can stay for a day, week, month, how ever long you want and each "hotel room" comes with a fully-equipped kitchen, laundry facilities, wi-fi, etc. I'm not sure if that's exactly what you're looking for, but maybe it's something to look in to? Good luck!

Here's the link: http://www.extendedstayhotels.com/

and here's the link for multiple Columbus locations with pricing info: http://www.extendedstayhotels.com/Locations/HotelList.asp?lstate=OH&lmetroid=317

BUT...Their pet policy might not jive with your needs: "One pet is allowed in each guest room and when you bring a pet, there will be a non-refundable cleaning fee charged upon check-in on the first night. This charge will be $25 dollars for each night of your stay but will not exceed $150. Weight, size and breed restrictions may apply. Please contact the hotel directly with inquiries."

Hey guys,

Congrats to those of you attending next year!

I'm a current 1st student, looking for a roommate or two for next year. I live too far away this year, but have found a place for next year that is literally less than five minutes away from the vet school in a fantastic neighborhood.

Please PM me if you're looking for housing starting in either July or September (it doesn't matter, both work) and are interested in meeting, and/or seeing the place at some point.

Thanks!

Hey All,

I'm a first year here at THE OSU, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask. As far as apartments go, I know that I LOVE where I live. I live in a place called Runaway Bay which is located about 15min. from the Veterinary School.

It's a safe area, that has its own dog park, and is VERY dog friendly. I pay cheaper rent here then in my undergrad and since I study a lot, I wanted a place that was VERY quite. This fits the bill to the T!

Also, I agree with staying west of High street. I have friends who live down there and it is a pain to visit them. They have no parking and its really loud. However they are close to the bars.

If you are looking up by Kenny and Henderson there are two or three good places up there, and if you are looking west, Hilliard is often a good option. I know there at least 15 other veterinary students in Runaway Bay alone. So good area overall.

If you are coming in to look for places to live, try to do a weekend thing. I came in with a list of 9 places to visit and saw them all in one weekend. Most places are open on Sundays and you can sign a lease then. I had everything done in one weekend.

Also, although you may have to sign a lease on campus early, if you live off-campus then often you must go by availability. There were some great places, that just didn't have any openings for when I needed to move in. But my lease goes from May to May, so anything is possible.

So here is where I get on my soapbox.

I'm an out-of-state student. If you are an out-of-state student I recommend you come here as early as you can!! I moved here the day after I graduated and I am soooo happy I did it. Here's why. You MUST live here for 1 year in order to gain residency. That includes the summer, so I moved here in May and my summer has already been covered. Now I can apply for in-state in May and be done.

So if I want to go do an externship outside of Ohio, then I can do that then. However, people in my class who came right before orientation MUST stay in Ohio over this upcoming summer, unless they get prior approval that this is an outstanding opportunity that they just CAN'T miss.

However, BE WARNED!!! Finding a veterinary job in Columbus, is difficult because unless you are a LICENSED veterinary technician, then many places won't hire you. However once you are a full-time student for some reason, jobs are easier to find. Don't ask me why, I don't get it either.

I did want to just post and let you know about these opportunities. Let me know if you have any in-depth questions! I love to help!

I am also an out of stater hailing from Texas looking to move to Columbus some time in June/July... I don't have a preference male/female (I myself am a female, 25 yrs.) roommate just as long as they can handle a cat (just one I swear) 🙂

I checked out/got a tour of the complex last weekend and it looked really great! They guy who worked there said that there were several veterinary students. Also, someone who lived there who I talked to said she was pretty happy with living there (she graded it a B, lol).

Totally unrelated, but they even have a lake built out behind the complex where you can kayak/canoe (they store it for you but you have to have your own/borrow from someone else)....thought that would be awesome for days when you just need to get away/relax!!

Hey All,

I hope you are all doing well and are excited to come to THE OSU!! If you are interested in Runaway Bay or have called to set up a visit, do me a favor and send me a PM.

I was just in there today, and three new "Buckeyes" had already called in the last two days!! That's awesome!

So just send me a PM, thanks!

I am soo excited that I'm all set and decided on OSU! I'm looking for a roommate/roommates. I am 23 (will be 24 when school starts) female. I don't have a preference girl or guy roommates. Besides studying, lol, I like working out and horseback riding. I am really laidback, but a little bit of a clean freak (though my laundry sometimes piles up). I have one 19 year old cat who (if he is still alive) I plan on bringing with me to ohio (scary). He is hyperthyroid and a bit shaggy, but loves attention and always uses the litter box. It is just my geriatric cat and I.

I am thinking about moving early summer (moving from MA). PM me if I sound like someone you can tolerate 😉

Where in MA are you from? I cant imagine there will be much over 2 of us MA residents going to Ohio in the fall.

Springfield.

Need to get bmichs75DVM to reconsider his "No female roommates" policy.

We could meet up some time and talk about apartment ideas/osu in general.

Do you work at tufts?

Hey,

Another person from Mass! I didn't live there but did go to HS in Springfield. I lived in CT and now my Dad lives in Jersey.

Small world!

Wow quite the MA representation! He should reconsider. Im never home anyway. I go days without seeing my roommate...busy busy busy

Small world!

If you didn't live there, couldn't be tech or Central?

So Cathedral, PVCS? I cant think of any of the others? We are going to have some mutual friends I think....

Alas, it was a private school so probably not. But good try!

After I do a little searching and hear back from a few people, I might have to reconsider the no female policy. but there is still plenty of time.

So from the facebook group there was this posting:

facebook.com said:
Attn: Room for Sub-Lease

Hey there Class of 2013! First of all, Congrats on getting in! I'm actually in the class of 2012 but I remember how it felt getting the big news! Anyways, I am interested in sub-leasing my room for the latter part of June through September. If any of you are out-of-staters and looking at establishing residency this would be a great opportunity for you. My current roommate did the same thing last summer so she will have residency by Autumn quarter which means in-state tuition (which I'm sure would compensate for 3 months rent.)

From an OOS perspective, am I missing something in thinking that if I move to Ohio in early September I should be fine for achieving IS tuition for my second year.

This person from facebook seems to imply that an OOS would need to move their earlier in order to be eligible for IS tuition for autumn of second year?

The way I understand it, an OOS student can get residency after one full year of living in Ohio (which includes the summer).

So, say for example you moved to Columbus in May of 2009. You would be considered a 'resident' in May of 2010, which, would then mean you would not have to stay in Ohio during the summer if you chose to move back home, do a really cool externship outside of OH, travel, etc. Second example...say you moved to Columbus in September of 2009. You would be considered a 'resident' in September of 2010, meaning you would have to spend the summer of 2010 in Ohio (I think somewhere I heard you can get ~2 weeks leave for a vacation though).

So I guess it really comes down to the fact if you want to stay in Ohio for your first summer or not. Again, this is just how I understood it. Any current OSU students care to share advantages/disadvantages/what they know for the OOS people? I could be totally off base here, so I'd call to clarify before I made any big decisions!

I think that sounds about right. I am actually trying to find a place as soon as possible so if people want to gain IS, then they can move in whenever they would like. Hopefully I find a place within the next few weeks to a couple of months from now. I am actually looking for a house and not an appartment, which I think would be a little nicer to stay in for 4 years.

Ok Guys,

Let me help clear this up for you. I stressed about this too becuase I'm an out of state student and this means a HUGE difference in cost. So let me provide you the answer.

Basically rachroo is correct.

If you move here in the fall (say September) then yes you should be able to gain residency. This is provided of course that you do all of the other requirements for gaining residency. Now this is beneficial if you plan on working in Columbus during the summer of 2010. However if you decide that hey there is this great externship you want to do, then its kinda a painful procedure to do that externship. I think you have to get a letter from Dean Sander saying you can't do that externship any other year, and you have to run it by both our financial aid person as well as the OSU registar's office.

So...for many people that's fine, and they spend the summer at home and come in September. My only word of caution is that if you do this, then you have to spend time moving in, getting your place ready, and then doing school and what not, all at the same time. You are already going to be stressed with school, so why add to that?

So you can also move in like May, before school starts and then you would have residency (provided you do all of the above requirements) by May 2010. The benefit is that if you decide to do that really cool externship in this instance, you are already in-state and you don't have to ask for permission, etc...

It really comes down to your personal preference on what you want to do.

I also want to caution, that the facebook posting implies that if you move there and just stay three months before the start of the autumn quarter of your first year, then you can get in-state tuition before the start of school. This is INCORRECT. There are special circumstances yes, i.e. if your spouse is from Ohio, or you or your spouse is in the military, but this does not apply to most people.

This is all from me, a current OOS trying to get residency so I do know the process. Let me know if you have any other questions!

GO THE OSU!!

TheOSU2012.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I wasnt sure if I was missing something that would have enable me to get one more semester at IS tuition cost.(other than moving there right now to get IS tuition for Spring '10 semester). My plan was to give myself anywhere from 3 to 6 weeks time to move in and get acclimated before the semester starts.

On a similiar note, what are there really for options regarding externships after first and second year? And are these "externships" different than the ones listed on the approved externship website?

Hey,

So that sounds good. Giving yourself time to acclimate I think is key. Finding where the best food is, the quickest way to get to school, the cheapest gas stations, etc...

For externships, I think you might be talking about this website? http://vet.osu.edu/3387.htm.

Those are just some of the externships. If you are involved with say AAEP for example, they do all sorts of externships as well and you get a lot of emails with them. I wouldn't worry about deciding now, because you still have a long time before you get there.

But you get a ton of emails about the available externships, so don't worry you'll be able to find something.

Let me know if you have anything else!

You mentioned the benefit to moving in early in the summer being that you would have less of an issue going out of state for an externship. But wouldn't this only matter to the summer between years 1 and 2?

I guess I was just under the impression that externships were just something we did during clinicals our last 1.5 years there.

So are you saying that a student could look for an externship after just 1 year of vet school?

Hey,

So I guess it depends on your definition of externships. I was using it more in a larger sense of the word. There are externships that yes you do during your clinical years.

However, you can also say do an "externship" at the AVMA headquarters in Shaumberg, IL. Or say by working for Pfizer animal health or for Purina. All of these get lumped under the heading of "externship". So don't get your hopes up!

You will learn however, for you OOS students out there, that in Ohio, once you have been in veterinary school for a year and are in your 2nd, 3rd, 4th year, that it is legal for you to perform surgery. However you MUST peform that surgery with a veterinarian present, and the licensing board usually takes that as the veterinarian is scrubbed in and watching over your shoulder. The likelihood of that happening is much smaller since usually the new students are pretty slow at performing surgery, and they want you to get done quickly!

You could also do an "externship" with the Rural Area Veterinary service. There some veterinary students get to do surgery, some do PE's, some act as techs to help provide low cost veterinary services.

So really, it really depends on your definition of the word "externship".

Hope that helps!

Hey THEOSU2012! I'm pretty interested in the Thailand elephant trip. Can you do that during the summer after your 1st year or 2nd year? Do you know any of the other specifics about the trip?

Hi there,

I've heard the Thailand trip is pretty awesome!! I personally don't know any of the details but you can do it after your first year I'm pretty sure. It is organized by Dr. Inpanbutr who teaches your Canine Anatomy course. She usually makes announcements about it during class, and even showed us video. Plus her mom (who lives in Thailand) makes everyone dinner.

I've heard its great but don't have any specifics for you. Sorry!

Hey guys.... so I just wanted to see how everyone is doing with the housing search? I will be starting the Veterinary Public Health master's program at OSU this fall (and reapplying to OSU's vet school this summer)...anyways, I've started my preliminary search for housing. Has anyone been to columbus and looked at places, or even signed a lease already? Any places you really recommend (heh, aside from Runaway Bay)? 🙄

I've already begun to dread this whole process, and hope I find a nice place. I've been trying to find a pet-friendly (I have 2 cats) community,or private rental and figured the highest I could go alone is 700/month (not including utilities). Everyone planning on renting solo their first year, or are people looking to buddy up to afford something nicer? 🙂

I am in processs of buying a place very close to campus! Excited to have no commute 🙂

Is anyone not planning on buying season tickets for the football games? I am def. buying mine in hopes that I will be able to go to the majority oof the home games...

I'm waffling between buying the tickets and skipping it this year. I'm not a huge football fan but everyone makes the games sound so exciting that I'm debating whether or not to. Does anyone know how much they cost?

I hear you, Kiki...

Apartment searching is a headache and a half even when it's an IN-town move. I've been doing a preliminary search of places and plan on taking a Saturday trip into Columbus to visit a bunch of places all in one trip.

I think I'd LIKE a roommate, just because I'm a really social person, and would love having someone to share the commute with (and sharing rent/utilities is ALWAYS a nice thing), but I would obviously live with someone whom I barely know. I have had a real dud of a roommate when I first moved to grad school and it was the same situation --new school, needed cheap rent, and it really taught me a lesson. I used to think that I could live with anyone, but this particular girl proved me wrong.

I'm still a little scarred from the whole experience and thus I'm wary of a repeat offense! Sooooo...yeah. I'm pretty positive that I'll be living alone, at least for the first year, until I know my classmates better.

Unless of course, I run into an OSU student who can deal with my sarcastic wit, tolerate my [very] vocal cat along with some clutter that will undoubtedly accumulate in any living room I inhabit, enjoys mindless reality TV as a study break (i.e. rock of love, project runway, top chef...oh, the list goes on and on), and won't mind if the tub goes 2-3 weeks without getting scrubbed. Wow, that just made me realize how badly I'm going to miss my current roomie!

Anyhow, good luck to all others who are actively searching for a place.

I don't really know a lot of students that live in Runaway Bay. I would say the most heavily populated area is the Kenny/Henderson area and Bethel area. That involves Governor's square, Fox and Hound, Olentangy Commons and that area also has a lot of condos that people own and rent.

I would say another option a lot of people do is live off of campus in the University View neighborhood or over where a lot of Dental/Med kids live, which is between 8th and 10th, East of high. That area is a little more population dense and is louder so I don't know that I would recommend it. Parking is also an issue.

Hey There!!

I'd have to agree with ri23. A lot of students do live up north of campus, but there are also quite a few who live more in the marble cliff, grandview area. Though I do disagree about Runaway Bay. I personally know at least 15 students who live in Runaway Bay and know there are at least 10 I don't know personally. It's pretty popular.

Another great place, if you have the moolah to spend is The Quarry. It is VERY nice. Granite countertops, all gated community, private movie theater. But it was by far and away the most expensive place I looked at.

Also, I know a few students who did their undergrad at OSU and ended up staying over by the medical school. But be forewarned, as ri23 said, it can be very loud over there.

Also, I would really recommend if you are trying to find someone to live with, choose maybe an older student? Some students are still looking for roomates for next year, and that extra advice might come in handy!

Heck, I have even met some of your classmates who are looking for roomies. That can be good and bad, I've heard the stories, but its only one year. If you don't like it, then you just change. Its not the end of the world.

But I wish you all luck!
