PCOM (Philadelphia) Discussion Thread 2009-2010

driving in philly maybe nightmarish for outsiders.
you could take regional rail line R1, get off at 30th st. station and catch a cab from there.

It runs frequently and takes about 45 minutes. Cost: $8 per person. "....

what exactly is this shuttle/"limo" called? anyone know?

Also, do you know if R1 line is on strike?

Do most people rent cars for their interview or take cabs to the hotel/PCOM?

(for people coming from the airport)
Coming from the airport, I believe cabs charge a flat fee of around $30. Since PCOM is a bit further out compared to my old apartment when I got charged $30, it may be more, not sure.

So, going roundtrip, a cab would cost $60. Probably worth it to rent.

Regional Rail is operational AFAIK.

Thanks, I applied when I had a 26M but now, with the retake, it is a 29Q and I don't know if that messed something up. Honestly I don't even want to interview. I just want to know that I didn't pay $250 for nothing. My money cleared on like 9/28/09 but my new mcat came out like 10/13/09 so I donno
Call to make sure they got it. You need to release scores through AMCAS to AACOMAS, retakes are not automatically released.

I think the hotels have their own shuttles that go from the airport to the hotels. I would honestly just get a freakin cab. Like bacchus mentioned its usually 30 bucks. If I was an out of towner I wouldnt be messing with regional rail for interviews. The system generally sucks, it is confusing. You would need to get the R1 to center city 30th street station/suburban/market east...grab the r6 cynwyd line (there are 2 r6 lines btw)...then cab it or walk from the station to PCOM. Too much of a PITA for me! Hence why I like never get on a RR train unless I am going to be drinking DT...and still will need to cab it home bc the trains stop too early!

They sent me this...

Today 2:08 PM Your application was completed on 9/24 - The normal verification processing timeframe is 4-6 weeks from the completion date of your application. The completion date is the date that all requirements have been received in-house by AACOMAS. Currently AACOMAS is processing applications a little over 7 weeks. Please bear with us in this time of overwhelming apps that we have received this year. Kind Regards, AACOMAS

Also I did the release MCAT score thing a few weeks ago. I think AACOMAS is smokin' something

They did the same thing for me. I had submitted my application 2 weeks before my retake... I had indicated "planned MCAT" on the application, but when they sent it out it never said that. So all the schools only had my original scores. When I released my retake score, the schools weren't expecting it because they never knew I had planned a retake. It took a few weeks to get ACOMAS to send out a revision. Frustrating at the time, but it all worked out in the end. I'm sure it will for you!:luck:

FYI-- I made some calls and theres a shuttle that goes from the airport to the hotels (right by PCOM) called "Lady Liberty". It costs $15, one way

Got an acceptance! The letter was dated 3 days later than my interview. They were fast! My first medical school acceptance so I am quite happy! Good luck to the rest of you, PCOM is awesome!

Congrats!!!👍👍 When was your interview? I interviewed 10/29 and they said we'd hear in approx 2/3 weeks, before Thanksgiving. Hope you go out and enjoy the acceptance!

Can someone tell me how interview day is this year? Some of the SDN interview feedback mentions a 3:1 interview and others say its 2:1. Is it open file?

Thanks!

Thanks! BTW... Love Super Troopers! "Say Car RamRod", haha

The day I interviewed, there was 2 different groups of interviewers- one had 3 people, the other had 2. I had the group of 3. It was open file.

For those of you who had recent acceptances CONGRATS!!👍...Would you mind sharing when you interviewed?

does PCOM have student hosts by any chance?? (some schools do this for the out-of-staters)

Did you guys receive interview invites via email or snail mail?

Thanks in advance!

i just called the admissions office, and they said that if your application is complete you will be notified in writing when they make your decision. that makes no sense, as i haven't even gotten an interview yet....fml !

I think by "decision" they just mean the decision to offer you an interview. That comes via email, so they're just saying that you can only find out of a status change that way.

So I just got verified 11/8, and working on my secondaries to send them in by fri.. my stats are

cGPA: 3.15
sGPA: 2.9
MCAT: 25

Grad school gpa so far is 3.6 for a masters in public health, just finished one semester. Shadowed 2 D.O.s and worked for one MD. Extracurriculars in counseling, volunteering at a hospital, now doing an internship in a clinic helping with a project and learning patient intake.

What do you think my chances are of getting in?

I have been complete since 9/22 and I still have not heard anything from this school. The other 4 DO schools I have applied to are AZCOM, CCOM, DMU-COM, and KCUMB. I have gotten into all of those, so I feel my application is very strong. What is going on with PCOM?

I was complete a few days before you, and just received an interview invite last week. With multiple acceptances, I'm sure your application is solid. If you are going to get an interview it will probably be within the next couple of weeks.

Every osteo. school I applied to has offered me an interview except for Nova and CCOM...the whole process doesn't follow any rhyme or reason! Good luck I am sure you will hear something soon:luck:

Ain't that the truth.

Every school follows a pattern to match their "mission" you just don't know where to look. PCOM is one of those schools where I'm like WTF do they want from me cause I think I'm well above their average? I mean, I would turn down their interview invite anyway but they should at least have the courtesy to ask lol.

Same here. I still haven't even gotten a secondary and I have pretty good stats.

Get over yourself. I'm glad you'd turn us down, we don't want you.

👍 (late bloomer i realize you might not have intended for it to sound this way but your remarks were kinda nasty lol)

in other news, i REALLY want an invite.....only complete for circa 2-3 weeks, but patience is not my strong point

I think part of it has to do with PCOM being favorable to regional states. At my interview, the dean was joking about CA residents flying in. Not in a harsh way, but just saying that PCOM looks regionally first. At my interview I'd say out of the 10 or so people, 8 were from PA, one from New Jersey, and myself from Maryland. So I'd definitely wait it out, but I got the impression that PCOM is region favored.

That would explain why I haven't heard anything. Thats also very annoying.

Yeah but I'm from Alabama... That is like 4 hours from PCOM (Driving).

UPDATE Just revisited AACOMAS and my thing still says processing. Its been exactly 2 months since my check cleared. I've e-mailed them multiple times. Should I just ask for my money back?

Well I meant I would turn down the interview because of location not because of the schools credibility. Don't worry I'm sure there's plenty of people that still think your schools great...if thats all you want to hear.

I think somewhere around 65-70% of the class is from PA or connected to it.

That makes sense considering that the school is in PA. I'd bet the majority of students at Western or Touro-CA are from CA or connected to it. My gripe is that the school has apparently decided to delay applicants from states far from PA. The irony is that I've been accepted to LECOM-Erie and will likely be attending there (Deposit due at the end of the month).

Just mailed out secondary today - sent LORs this morning - should arrive at campus tomorrow. Would really like an interview invite from here - gotta love FedEx delivering on Veterans Day.

Any advice what to wear to the open house tomorrow? I have an interview Thursday so I thought it would give me more opportunity to see the school and hear from students. Is it casual or more business attire?

Thanks!!

I have been sent in my secondary and LOR's here for about a month and haven't heard anything yet, not even a complete email. What gives?

I believe that they do not send out a 'complete' email, so don't expect one. Next word you should hear from then is :xf:interview:xf: or 😛hold/rejection😛

I got a complete email from PCOM. It came several weeks or so after all my materials were all there and my check had been cashed.

Haven't heard anything else. Still hoping! :xf:

I sent in my application last week Wednesday and received a "complete" email today.

I just got an interview invite! Very happy.....I really wanted one here. Does anyone know the percentage of interviewees that are eventually accepted?

This was posted earlier in the thread from someone who attended the open house this year:

>6000 primary apps received
3541 secondaries received
~800 invited for interviews
672 interviews
395 acceptances
270 matriculated

waitlist is ~270 and is not ranked.

~65% in state

Avg. age: 26 (range 19-42)

Average scores:
cGPA: 3.5
sGPA: 3.29
MCAT: 25.8

Half the class was confirmed by the middle of December last year.
