Who cares what the remediation policy is...the most practical solution is not to fail!

First time poster 🙂 What I have heard about PCOM GA is something similar (but not exactly the same). If you fail just one class, you have to REPEAT the entire year. That means you repeat everything. This means you are no longer in the same residency cycle. They no longer do remediation. From what I know, most schools do allow you to do remediation. I personally wouldn't want to retake the whole year but maybe some people could see that as a good thing.

Just call the school, you dont have to take my word for it or anyone else's. This is the internet after all.

This doesn't make sense. So If you Ace all your first year classes, then fail one, you have to retake all the classes you Aced? This doesn't sound right.

Because it isn't.
This. I haven't been in this thread in a while but if that policy is true, then PCOM is one of the only schools that kicks students out for failing one course. I actually think that they will HELP those who fail in some way.

This is in fact the current (as far as I know) policy.

I would like to say though that your example isn't quite correct. I've never heard of anyone "acing many classes" and then failing one. Usually people who did quite the opposite and finally failed to pass the bar...

Even if it isn't the right attitude to be thinking about failing, all of us are going to have to adjust, so it is a little scary lol. That actually sucks bad

Are there any actual students that can confirm this policy or is it just here-say?

Dismissal for failing a single course just sounds too illogical. It seems much more likely that a student that was dismissed for failing one course was already on probation for some other reason, probably for having to remediate failed courses previously.

/shrug

Yea that is more likely the case. I mean, I've heard of leniency at many other schools

Yes the above posters are correct--sorry did not mean that you are kicked out, just that you have to repeat the entire year over. Obviously any more would lead to a dismissal.

Just confirmed with 3 current students.

I looked at the student handbook (which may not even matter at this point) and it says you repeat the year if you fail a class and then fail the remediation class. That just sounds a little bit more plausible. This is right from the handbook;

"Student’s performance is reviewed at the end of each term. Students with unsatisfactory academic achievement will be counseled regarding their performance. A student with a failure in one academic standing unit will be recommended by the Student Academic Progress and Policy Committee to the Dean for promotion from one class to the next when the student has removed the deficiency. Students with course failures in an academic standing course may not be eligible for validation examination and is not eligible for advancement to the next year of study."

The policy has been recently changed, so will not be reflected in the handbook.

So, fail one class and you must repeat entire year? That's almost as bad as failing lol. And not fair at all. They should allow at least 2 total retakes.

That makes next to no sense, so I'm still thinking there's some details that are being missed or miscommunicated.

At any rate, the take away should be to not fail any classes because it sounds like a huge hassle regardless of what the new policy happens to be.

As far as I know, this policy (repeating a year after one fail) is not that uncommon. To put it bluntly, it is often the case schools will do this. Sometime last year I checked online at many osteo schools and recently from friends at two schools (allo) here in my state and they do this as far as I know. I think it's just the nature of the beast that we are dealing with here, hey this is med school anyway.

I wonder if it's possible to try really really hard and still fail. Probably

It absolutely is. I know someone who is as nice a guy as you'd ever meet, he tries extremely hard but still has difficulty with concepts not 'clicking'.

A good analogy would be if he were to put together a puzzle, he'd study the details of each puzzle piece exhaustively, but not be able to see the grander picture. So, while he'd memorize the shape, color, etc. of each piece, and probably lump similar ones together, he couldn't see how they'd fit together to form the finished result. As a result, he'd have puzzle pieces upside down and backwards so that they'd never fit together.

On the other hand, he did seek my advice on how to study for the MCAT and then did the exact opposite of what I suggested. So, who knows...?

Sure, I think it's actually not that hard to fail. I mean it's going to be SO much info thrown at us man, that any mistake not corrected promptly will mean big trouble. I'm a little nervous about it, but we have no choice but to pass right? We are fighters man

+1!

Also as a side note do think it would ok to call and ask for my decision? I interviewed 2/3 and I'm super anxious! They said 2-3 weeks to hear by mail but I was considering calling Monday.

Interviewed 01/06 and was put on hold. Anyone else put on hold post interview? Didn't really understand the letter and thought I was waitlisted. Anyone know when I might hear back?

What did the letter say that you didn't understand?

They sent out a notice that the school will be open tomorrow, so if you want to call tomorrow, they'll be there.

I also interviewed on 2/3. You mind letting us know what they tell you about decisions?

Well they said they sent out the letters! Lol unfortunately I have to wait for the mail to hear but it's ok I've waited this long what's a couple more days. Good luck everyone!

So, they would not send you the decision via email, or you chose not to do it like that?

Thanks for the update! Guess we just have to wait it out now...

Good Luck!

I requested my decision be emailed, but haven't heard anything yet

Hopefully you'll hear good news, but try not to worry too much about it taking longer. The college has been closed due to weather for much of the past two weeks, so everything probably got delayed.

Current 2nd year student here. I have not heard anything about this "being kicked out" policy. As far as failing goes, if you fail a class that is a year long course (like OMM or PCS) then yes you do have to repeat the entire year. If you fail a class that is just one term long, depending which term it is, you can just repeat that class if you have passed OMM and PCS for the whole year. So I guess the only way you can get away with not redoing the whole year is by failing Neuro which is in 3rd term if you have passed everything else. Hope that helps some. Its also on a case by case basis as i've seen one girl here for the 3rd year trying to pass 1st year. But don't dwell on failing, what a terrible outlook when you are just getting started!!!

Hey everyone!
I'm another 2nd year student at Ga-PCOM and rjelalam is absolutely correct about the failing policy. Keep in mind though that the VAST majority of you will never be in this situation, so try not to worry about it!

Also, I am the person on J-track who has the person in her group that doesn't want to travel. Granted, I haven't actually met with my group yet to definitively figure out who will go where, so I'm hoping it'll go better than I'm thinking it will.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to PM me🙂 Good luck with your applications!

last few posts were enlightening... now lets just not worry about that and do our best...if we made it here, surely with dedication we can pass..now on to fafsa and scholarship stuff lol

Hello future classmates. Does anyone have an estimated time frame of when we will be receiving the welcome packet after turning in the 250 deposit? Thanks.

Its suppose to be anywhere from 2 to 8 weeks. If it doesn't come within that time frame, you need to contact student services. Mine was late because my original was lost during the lovely string of winter storms while on its way to Florida.

Anyone from recent interviews know how full the class is at the moment? Heard the last interview date is March 7th.

Anybody having financial aid checklist issues?

The checklists and all of the Nucleus DO is for the 2017 class. The updated website for 2018 one will be coming soon, according to an email I received on my pcom acct.

Have you called?

Yeah.. I called a couple of weeks ago and was told that I should have known by last Wednesday.. But since then I've talked to a couple of other ppl that have also called but talked to Tristan who told them they haven't even made decisions yet.. I'm hoping to hear something soon but since the school closed for those couple of days at the beginning of the month I think they are still playing catch up.

I'm just praying for good news after the long wait 🙂 I could care less how long they take if it's an acceptance.

I do have a question. Ik that were supposed to have 2 weeks to pay the 1st deposit. I'm assuming that since the responses are delayed we will have more time but as for the 1500 in April can we get a student loan or something to cover it or is it just out of pocket? I've got a little bit saved and I'm sure my family would help if I needed it but I was just curious.

I wish we could get a loan from pcom to cover it. This is one of those borrow money from family situations. Or get a credit card.

I often wonder if they would reduce the amount of the deposit for students with economic hardships.

Oh man, that sucks! I was really hoping to hear this week.

I'm not gonna say you won't hear but I'd be surprised if it was this week... Sorry :/ but I bet they're getting caught up so I bet it won't be as long of a wait as the 2/3 group.
