hey folks i have a question about pitt: does pitt just send out enough acceptances to fill its class or do they overfill like northwestern? i know that they "accept" a lot of people bc many decide to go elsewhere but was not sure how many they pull from the waitlist. thanks

jessetig...Pretty much every med school overfills their class. Typically, schools will take about 2 applicants for every 1 spot, and they base the exact number on historical precedent for that particular school. If they take 2 for every 1, and less than half of the acceptees matriculate, that opens up waitlist spots. Some schools are more conservative with initial acceptances than others (ie. Michigan), but they still accept more spots than their class holds.

According to US News, in 2002 Pitt accepted 417 people and 126 matriculated when it was all said and done, so it appears like they greatly overfill their spots. However, I have heard that Pitt has an active waitlist, so they must have a very low matriculated:accepted ratio. I'm not sure why, because it seemed like such a great place. Maybe they accept a lot of "superstar" applicants that end up going to other schools.

Hope this helps.

This is tough being on the waitlist at your #1 choice. For those of you on the wailist, is Pitt your no 1? I would like to drop what I am doing and go there no matter when I could get off of the waitlist, but there's something to be said for knowing what you are going to be doing next year. And actually going somewhere that wants you!

I really liked Pitt too but I want to know where I'm going next year relatively early because I want to take the time to find roommates, a place, and go somewhere as excited about me as I am about them.

I guess what I'm doing to console myself is realizing that if it really was the right place for me to go, I would have gotten accepted. If I don't get off the waitlist in June, then I think I'll go to a different school so I have peace of mind...

I GOT IN!!

I was out of town for most of last week, but I just came home to the big packet 🙂

What a surprise...I never got an email or a phone call, and I was sooo prepared for a waitlist letter.

hey, congrats to all the people with acceptances!! and to all those who've been going psycho-crazy email checking, figuring out how to waist time till the mail man comes, etc. only to get rejections or waitlists..... i totally feel your pain

anyways, in response to a really old post about late interviews, i interviewed 2/24, emailed dr. curtiss yesterday about whether they'd gotten to my app yet, and his response was "Sorry, not yet Soon." but i'll post if/when i hear anything, and any other late interviewees, if you get any news, let us know!

No Pitt for me 🙁 . I'm not quite sure what went wrong, I thought my interviews all went very well, and my stats are good.....but I returned from spring break today only to find a nice rejection letter waiting for me. Oh well, I'm off to Rochester

sorry zeke...i know how much you wanted to go to pitt. rochester is a great option though.

When you guys got your acceptance was the letter personalized or generic?

personalized...definitely a nice touch.

Almost half of my class here at Pitt was taken off of the waitlist. So don't sweat being waitlisted. If you really want to come here, then let the adcoms know this, especially after mid-May, when things sort of get finalized. They take people off the waitlist here up until late July (at least they did last year).

Good luck.

well, i dunno if there are still people waiting to hear bc they interviewed late, but i just called to ask about the status of my app and they said i should hear in the next 2 1/2 weeks.. hope that helps anyone else

I just got my waitlist letter yesterday. Says that they right-away accepted outstanding applicants, and that I was an excellent candidate (That makes me feel good!). Anyway, i would love to go to pitt, any suggestions on how to improve your chances being wait-listed. I am in the process of finishing my final honors thesis and hoping to graduate Summa cum laude in Biochem; think it helps if i ask my research advisor to write a letter addressing this and how i've worked hard over the last two years? Also, how about an additional LOR?

Thanks

Wow, that's really awesome. Everytime I think I got snubbed from this school or that school, I realize that there are some really amazing people who are in the same boat. Anyhow . . my advisor thought that it would be just fine to have someone send a new letter. Perhaps you could even ask that person to mention in the letter that it is only being written for Pitt, because of your desire to go there?

On the other hand . . I have heard that Pitt's waitlist is merely a continuation of the ranks that they used to accept people, and that they just take people in order from the list. Some people have said that a LOI will not help. But I would bet that if you are number 6 on the waitlist and people 1-5 have not expressed that Pitt is their top choice, then it could bump you up over them.
