Purdue c/o 2025 Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi, are there any current 4th year or graduated students from Purdue in this thread? Can you share some experience on your clinic rotations? How many patients do you usually see a day? What are some of the interesting cases you've got to deal with?

Current 4th year here. How many patients I see a day varies on the rotation. Last block was Oncology and I had 1 a day and now I'm on community practice and will be seeing 4-5 a day. As far as interesting cases most are kind of a blur I'd say. I'm a bit burnt out and just looking to survive to the finish line. The days are long and hard and you're constantly "on it" day in and day out and it wears on you over time. Sorry that I'm in a bleak state but at this point I just want to be done.

Hi guys, does anyone have recommendations on apartments near campus? I started looking today and a lot of the nice ones have a 20lbs or 35lbs weight limit for dogs😵 I mean come on, 60lbs I can understand (tho both of my fur babies are bigger than that too), but this is just ridiculous!!

From what I've seen so far, 2B dog friendly apartments within half an hour walk from campus are somewhere $1300-1800, does that sound about right, or am I missing some good options during my initial search?

And there doesn't seem to be many off leash dog parks in West Lafayette? One of my babies is absolutely psycho, he goes to dog parks twice a day right now and I really worry about his brain if he can't run freely for 4 years....

I live in Lafayette, about 10-15 minutes from Campus in a complex called Overture Flats. There is NO restrictions on weight or breeds here (so there are a lot of dogs at this complex!). There is a dog park at this complex. We pay 1350 + utilities for a 3bdrm, 2 bath. There is an off leash dog park at Happy Hallow, a park in West Lafayette.

The complex looks so great!!!! And the price is so affordable for the amenities!!!!😍 Are there any school bus to the location though? Google maps suggests a transfer of public bus routes and about an hour of commute. I don't drive, and it will be at least half a year before my SO can finish his PhD and come live with me with the car.

Heck that complex is so beautiful and wholesome, I'll take uber to school if I need to! Are uber/lift rides readily accessible in West Lafayette?

I seem to have lost/ misplaced the email covering the virtual tours of Purdue, can anyone share the links or should I try to reach out to admissions to get them sent to me again?

I also lost them and reached out and here is what they sent me:

I think that would get expensive fast! I'm sure there are bus routes! That's a hard trade off - West Lafayette will be more expensive given it is so close to Campus but the you are a bike ride/walking distance of the school. Lafayette will be cheaper but a but further from school. I would try looking at places for rent that are not from complexes. Some companies will have houses for rent that can be cheap enough if you get roommates

For the most part, yes. I know a couple of people who have used uber occasionally and haven't had a problem.

A couple of years ago, a ride share program was put together as well. I never utilized it so I don't know how available that still is, but I imagine if you brought up some interest, they'd send out that as an option again.

This is a little specific, but I was hoping to talk to an OOS student that had other OOS offers and to learn why you choose Purdue.

Of the schools I applied to, and was accepted to, Purdue had the cheapest OOS tuitions (and probably still is compared to a lot of other schools I didn't get accepted to). I feel bad you guys didn't get to experience interview day in person. Purdue was on the bottom of my list and actually thought about not coming to my interview, but after interview, the vibe, how special they made the day for us, and all of the opportunities, I knew I would be crushed if I didn't get in. Hope it helps!

Anyone in the housing group chat or any GroupMe's? Hoping to get a link 🙂

You can PM me instead of throwing it here if you'd like

To any current students: My family and I are planning to come to Indiana this weekend and look around the area and campus. I was wondering if anyone would be willing to give my family and I an informal tour of the school?

I am IS and currently on the wait list. Praying everyday for some good news!! Congratulations to all who have already been accepted and good luck to everyone on the wait list! Keeping my fingers crossed.

So I just learnt from the webinars that the VTH doesn't accept vet students as part-time tech? This bums me out, because I'm the "learn as you practice" type of person, and really don't want to be out of touch with the field for 4 years. Also...kinda need that extra pocket money from a few shifts here and there. Do any current students have any weigh-in on this?

There are definitely students who work in the hospital I think? But not as an actual tech because you need a license to do that (if that's there reason). Honestly I would never want to work with our work load (during this semester at least), but people do!

Those who put down a deposit, what payment methods do they take?

Hey guys!

I just wanted to hop on here and let you know about the ClinPath Student Tech position! Y'all should have gotten a email explaining the position, but in case you haven't, here's the jist:

As a student tech you will be trained to run many of the analyzers in the hospital's lab and perform many of the in-house diagnostics that we do here at Purdue. Once trained, you will work 1-2 nights a week running samples for the large and small animal emergency departments. In any of the down time (and most days there's down time), you can study... which basically means getting paid to study! Not to mention getting to form relationships with clinicians and learning material that will put you steps ahead of your classmates when it comes to ClinPath/Diagnostic Chemistry/Hematology courses! I know it may seem like a lot, but from a current student tech, it's not! The benefits much outweigh the few downfalls. If you have any questions, please feel free to message me!

How long did it take to get an email about your acceptance after receiving the call? I’m getting a little nervous with the deadline approaching quickly!

For me it took 3-4 days. Don't be nervous! If you got the call from the Dean Willie Read you're in! I doubt they're gonna give away your spot man. Welcome to the class.

Accepting was easy - they'll give you a login and a link to pay the $1000 deposit to secure your spot

This is a totally random question, and I really hope it's not offensive to any horse owners/lovers if it happens to be stupid....

I've been dreaming of learning to ride a horse since a little girl, but I've spent my whole life in big cities. Are there horseback riding experiences available in vet school for beginners? I know some students bring their own horses, so I imagine there are stables near the vet school? Can somebody share some experience at that? Thank you!!!
I’m at Purdue undergrad and I’m president of the western team! We do accept grad students as partial members (Basically you can do everything but vote in elections) and I also lease/ride at another barn in town! Feel free to message me if you want some more info!

Hey everyone! I just got an offer for CO 2025!! I am now trying to decide between Midwestern University and Purdue. I have some questions that might help me with my decision. I live in an RV, is there any parks near the campus? How is traffic in the area? What made those of you who had other offers choose Purdue?

For me - the 1-1 attention due to low class size, the crazy amount of zoom sessions they offered, the letters in the mail and personal phone call (I didn’t receive call/letter from 3 other unis i got offers from), and being able to study abroad while at Purdue. They are big on international vet med

Midwestern and Purdue were the 2 I had to choose from as well and as great as Midwestern was, the price wasn't worth it

Cost, mostly. I like the curriculum: they use PBL but it’s not the majority of the first couple years and there’s still lots of traditional lecture time (I prefer structure to studying on my own); there are clinical and professional applications and integrations taught concurrently throughout; and it seems like there is a nice balance of giving people the option to track during rotations and making sure everyone has a good foundation in all species. I’ve heard glowing things about the faculty, and our interactions with them in info sessions, getting calls from Dean Reed, and hearing from them during our interview really impressed me. It seems like the faculty and students have created a positive and collaborative school culture. I like that the area isn’t too urban and the class sizes are small.

Current vet students, is VetPrep useful for the first 2-3 years, or only really good for the NAVLE?

Only NAVLE. It's 100% a waste of money to purchase it for your first three years imho. Most I ever did was sign up for the Question of the Day through VetPrep and Zuku to get a feel for the way they asked questions so I could choose the prep program that would work best for me in fourth year.

Hello, I am starting to plan my trip out there and wondering about orientation. Is it online or in person? I know in the email it says it is mandatory but I might not make it to Indiana until a couple days after it begins. Any one know any info on that?

You 100% have to attend orientation. It is in person.

Seconding the previous post. All incoming first years have to attend, including (most?) students who repeat first year. I know people who got called off the waitlist a few days before orientation and were still told to be there. It might be a question you have to contact someone at the school directly to get a definitive answer for any extenuating circumstances.

For those who applied.....i have a question about their ochem 1 pre-req. It says it needs to be ochem 1 with lab but my ochem 1 was lecture only, there was no lab attached to it. Is that acceptable or are they stern on needing the lab with it?

I would email admissions. You can take labs separately at a lot of universities.
