Random AADSAS Questions: 2018-2019 Edition

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Right now you can start filling out the entire application. Transcripts are probably important as they can take a couple weeks to arrive and get processed. The other thing that I would recommend is getting you recommendors added so that when they are finished they can add the letter to your application. As long as you as submitting before the end of July it is still considered early.

From the AADSAS Instructions page:

"What is my “Title?” Who is my supervisor?
If you did not have an official title, you enter the type of activity you did; for example, “Dentist Shadow” or “Nurse Shadow,” etc. The organization is the location where or for whom the work took place and the supervisor is the person who was responsible for you or was in charge of your activity."
For description I focused more on what I took away from the experience and a brief 1-2 sentence description. That is what my wife put and she got in anyway 🙂 I put DMD, MD in the title if that is what they have. Specialty I put in the description if it is not included in the title of the practice.

I am managing my letters via Interfolio. Is delivery from there relatively quick once my evaluations are already recieved?

I'm unsure whether to list my pre-dental club involvement under experiences or achievements since I'm the current club president and was the club secretary last year...both are voted for positions. As for my others, my job, research, shadowing, and volunteering under "experiences", and awards and honors under "achievements"...right?

Yes put that stuff under experiences but I’d also put your pre-dental club in experiences and talk about your leadership roles in the description, that’s how I included my leadership stuff since there’s not a category for it!

If you do volunteering for a club, do you mark it as an extracurricular activity or volunteer? I want them to know these hours are volunteer hours.

I am not sure. I didn't use interfolio. I just had my letter writers upload directly to the AADSAS.

I did a little bit of both. I was a part of a volunteer org that I was also a district officer for. So I included it in EC and in volunteer.

Correct. I did an entry as Extracurricular and talked about my position as a district officer overseeing multiple clubs. I then made another entry under Volunteering and talked about the volunteering and the hours that I accumulated from the club.

That's the thing that I am not sure about if I should do that. I feel like dental schools might get annoyed seeing overlapping and unnecessarily things and might take it in the wrong light. I mean they don't take a lot of time going through each app, and I find it they would hate it to read more than they are supposed to.

I agree if you do not have a significant difference between your two entries. I use the extracuricularentry to talk only about my leadership work. The other entry is completely about volunteering and my hours. I have no real overlap between my two entries except for the fact they come from the same organization. I would not put anything extraneous, but don't undersell your application but ommiting pieces that could help your app either.

For the USC question "Please list your professional achievements and include when and how long," what would count as a professional achievement?

I have a question about my transcript. I went and paid for an official transcript from my school. Some of the classes on it are sort of abbreviated and some are not. For example, on my transcript is has:

Human Anatomy and Physiology 2
Humn Anatmy & Physiology Lab 2

What should I enter into aadsas ? Should I just put it exactly how it appears on my transcript or should I just fully type out what it is supposed to be ?

Thank you

I just put exactly what was on my transcript and it worked perfect for my TMDSAS app at least!

I typed it exactly as shown on my transcripts for AADSAS last year.

I don't think I had any when I applied...I was still accepted. I only did research this year (senior year), and had I been applying this cycle, I would've definitely put my two poster presentations into that area. To me, seems like publications and presentations go here, not sure what else would fit.

Not sure what you mean? Your GPA is calculated with +/- if that is what you school uses.
I’m scared to see my grade without +/- because I have a lot of B+’s 🙁
Anyone feel the same?

I thought AADSAS calculate both gpas: with +/- and without +/-. Or do they just calculate by what your institution uses??

They just standardizes the GPAs. That's cause some schools have A+. If your school doesn't have A+ system, then your GPA will come out similar to your transcript GPA.

AADSAS calculates all your GPAs with and without +/-. As mentioned before, A+s no longer count as 4.33, they count as 4.0.
Refer to my post in this thread: behavioral sciences for sGPA? to see how the GPAs will look once your application is verified! There are tons! I counted 58 in these screenshots I posted, but there were many more than that lol. :dead:

I thought the standardization was just if your school didn't use the .33 system in the +/-.

I forgot that they give both GPAs. My only work from a +- is my masters. All of my undergrad is the straight system so I glossed over that they give both to dental schools.

That's why I said similar and not exact. If An A- is 3.67, and B+ is 3.33, and in the application it is 3.7, and 3.3, if the student has about 50% A- and 50% B+, their GPA will come out similar in both scenarios.

I see. I never thought about it that way.

How about scholarship?

Dumb question: In the title of the experiences, can I put the abbreviation for the activity? I.e., volunteering at an event like some mission of mercy, and for the title putting "_______ Mission of Mercy (_MOM)", and then referring to the activity as that abbreviation in the description? Does this look unprofessional? Also, does the order of the experiences matter? Or should they be in some order by hours, type, name, etc.?

Should we include memberships of organizations in the experience section (ex. member of a pre-dental society or a pre-health organization)? And if we can include it, how do you list the average weekly hours and # of weeks? I was thinking the # of weeks is just the # of weeks I've been a member but then even if I put 1 hour, the hours add up to too much hours. Can someone please tell me what I should do?

If you have meetings every other week, then just do that number divided by two. One week per hour times say 8 weeks per semester is what any regular club would be.

I started learning a new language. I know some vocabulary and simple sentences like "Hello, how are you. My name is. What is this?" I'm better with reading it honestly. Can I still add this language as Beginner on the application? I don't know what they consider Beginner level.

I would hesitate, as I wouldn’t want to look foolish if my interviewer spoke that language, and I have a high school level at the language. I personally would just bring it up as a hobby if the topic comes up.

So question on the experiences;
I have worked at a bakery off and on over the past 7 years when I am home for the summer, or Christmas break, etc. Should I list this as per diem employment even though I was full time while working? I figured I would explain the situation in the description, but

I received a need-based scholarship for 3 consecutive years (I had to maintain a certain GPA, write reflection, had to be selected)
Do I put them all separately since there is no Start to End date in Achievements section???

Seems like a good solution 🙂 Showing a 7 year job is still pretty good. Especially at something unique like a bakery.

This should be put under awards, since a scholarship is technically awarded.

Yea that's where I'm putting. But my question is how I should put "Issued Date" when I was awarded for 6 consecutive semesters (3 years). I can only put one date down..

Does it matter if I have 6 highlighted experiences when I submit the application or having 5 experiences highlighted and adding another experience during summer after I submit the app? I'm going abroad in July to volunteer and I'm debating whether to wait until July to add and highlight an experience or just select all 6 experiences at the time of submission..

Just put the 1st time you received it, and under description write, "I received this award on ___, ___, and ___."

What if you've maintained a high position in a club, or were awarded certificates within the club. Can that be included under the awards section? I don't have any research experience or any certificates, so I'm unsure what to include in this section other than dean's list

I would put the club work under extracurriculars. You could either include the awards in the description or you could add the award to the achievements section. I would put the dean's list into the achievements as well. You can leave research and licenses blank if you don't have anything.

So I'm going to be a senior in the fall. I already picked what classes I'm taking in the fall. Do I also need to list on my transcript what classes I think I will be taking in the spring, even though I still did not sign up for any yet?

I don't know if you really need to unless they are pre-reqs for some schools.

You dont have to do the spring courses yet; theres an academic update period to add summer marks and stuff that you can add your spring courses to.

if you have a course with no grade since the lenght is for the whole year you can always put NC

Anyone know what time apps open?

Does it make a big difference if I submit the first day vs. second day vs. within the first week?

I won't really matter much because the apps get sent in batches. The first one I won't happen until the first applications have their transcript get verified. So I would guess it won't get sent until after a week or two after the app opens.

You’d say that I would rather put their credentials rather than “dentist” or “volunteer coordinator”? If they aren’t a doctor, do I put Mr/mrs?

I guess I have left the title blank if they don't have a title (DMD, MD, DDS, etc), but I also talk about their capacity in the description box. So I don't have a great answer for that, sorry.

Shoot I’ll just give them a call tomorrow and ask. Thanks, though!

Is there anyone else who is having trouble putting indentation on to their personal statements in the text box? When you look at the preview, it is just one big monstrous blob since it automatically removes all the indents.

If you have the characters you can add an entered space between paragraphs. That is what I did.
