Had a rough week, and I was heading home to start studying for my 2 exams next week. On my way home, I was going through an intersection- my light was green. a guy going the opposite direction turned out in front of me to make an unprotected left turn. Tried to stop, but there just wasn’t enough time. Hit him going ~45 miles an hour. He’s okay, paramedics checked me out at the scene and it seems that I’m okay, but my good ear just keeps ringing.. his car seems okay, my baby does not. 🙁

I think that I might have to drop out of vet school. I get so anxious when I sit down to study that it's virtually impossible to actually focus. I can't even look at a lecture right now without feeling like I want to throw up. Although I did surprisingly really well on the first round of exams, this second round has been nothing more than an utter sh*tshow; not only did I fail my micro exam (both lab and lecture), but I received the lowest score in my entire class, I'm pretty confident that I failed parasit, too, and I didn't do well on path. I have to make at least a 2.25 to be placed off of probation and continue on... but honestly I don't know if I can manage that now. We've had something like 9 exams/big quizzes over the past couple of weeks and it has just been awful and demoralizing and relentless.

I don't know if I can do this anymore, or even if I really want to or if it is worth it, and I'm feeling absolutely terrible about myself. I did horrible in first year anatomy, but I didn't outright FAIL any exams. I definitely have this semester.

This is supposedly the hardest and most academically grueling semester in terms of pure workload and scheduling. I'm just hoping, praying that there is truth to that. I do take an ounce of comfort in the fact that I don't know a single person in our class who isn't completely stressed out or overwhelmed right now, so... at least I'm not alone?
Counseling services on main campus are great about helping with anxiety. 2nd year is awful and demoralizing and relentless. It gets better. Hang in there, and ask for help from your profs, OASA, the dean. They all want you to successfully graduate. Doesn't matter if you're at the top of the class or at the very bottom, both people are awarded the same degree.

Take it easy the next few days. As the adrenaline and shock wear off, you might really start to hurt. So glad you are ok though!

Very sorry to hear about this @cdoconn.

Just to be on the safe side, you might want to get checked by a physician to make sure everything is okay.

I was checked by the paramedics on scene and they seemed okay. I’m recording symptoms & pains to see how they change, and everything seems to be okay. Ear ringing went away though which is good!

The study tool "Anki" is popular with many human medical students and residents.

I'm curious: do veterinary medicine students like to use Anki, too?
I used Anki a lot in undergrad and during the first year of vet school and found it immensely helpful, especially with its entire gimmick of spaced repetition (which most other flashcard tools/apps such as Quizlet don't currently provide, or at least not for free) and the image occlusion add-on for things like histo, anatomy, and path. I've been meaning to utilize it more again this year, but putting together really good cards just takes so much time...

I used it a fair bit last year but I'm too lazy to use it these days. It definitely helped me learn and retained things though.

I did very well and above average on pretty much all of the first exams we had this semester, so I know that I can do it. It's just a matter of getting the anxiety back under control so that I can use my study time effectively and, hopefully, hit this next round of exams out of the park.
You have already done well on many of your first exams this semester.

Those are positive results - yup! - you can do it @Elkhart!

I love Anki (not a vet student). The downside is like Dubz said, getting good cards set up when you're swamped with information. The other challenge is learning how to mass-import, that sort of stuff, if you can.

For me I use it for language learning, so I also spend way too much time fiddling with the intervals, etc. 😛

And you can do it, @Elkhart. 🙂 We're all here behind you.

Don’t quote the photo because I’m gonna take it down. But we went out to see my baby, and yeah... she’s definitely totaled. 🙁 But hey, the other guy and I are okay, and that’s all we can ask for!

Let me know if you need anything... I have a lighter schedule this coming week so let me know if you need any chauffeuring.

My fiance is insisting I am far above the average # of pets for someone in the veterinary world (I have four animals). Spoiler alert, I'm the only person he actually knows in the veterinary world.

How many pet do you guys have?

One dog, two turtles and eight chickens. And a partridge in a pear tree.

One large dog, 3 cats, a bunch of fish and an empty tank ready to receive a leopard gecko or two someday.

I'm currently battling with Nationwide because they denied my claim that should have been covered. Gingival hyperplasia is a preexisting condition for us and even though the vet who did his dental outlined that all therapy was for resorptive lesions. she did briefly mention on the dental chart there was very mild gingival hyperplasia, and now Nationwide is trying to say that all the costs were attributed to gingival hyperplasia/complications of gingival hyperplasia (spoiler: they were NOT). The vet sent them a second stern letter outlining every medical decision she made and how it was explicitly not related to gingival hyperplasia but they still haven't gotten back to me yet. Next dog I'm probably going with Trupanion.

That really sucks. I have a dog with collapsing trachea on theophylline and they tried not to cover something unrelated because their system triggers certain exclusions based on meds and "assuming" the conditions those things are treating. I was able to get it covered for him by calling up the company and explaining, hopefully that works for your case :\

Thanks Rory!!! <3 I appreciate it! I think I found a classmate to pick me up on her way to class, so I’m really happy for that!

Curiosity: What are other practicing vets annual renewals costing them? I just renewed:

AVMA - $330 (required because I'm required to carry PLIT, otherwise I'd ditch AVMA in a heartbeat - they definitely don't provide $330 worth of service for me per year)
PLIT - $350
MVMA - $165 (state VMA)
VECCS - $165
VIN - company/group
DEA - $731/3 yrs
License Renewal - I forget

= $1250/yr + license renewal + VIN

I mean, my practice pays the cost of all these, but geez.... seems kinda ridiculous.
Canadian so some things are different:
Licence/NSVMA: $938 (covered by employer)
CVMA: Included in above
VIN: $1022 (covered by employer)
Insurance: Covered by employer, no idea

My PLIT is $950. Stupid large animal crap.

Someone tried to charge $1 to my debit card yesterday in another state. Now I have to wait for a new card. Not really happy about that or the fact that I am also locked out of my online banking portal which may or may not be related to closing that account. I'll have to find time to get to the bank so I can take out some cash to live on for the next week. **** you thieves. ****. You.

I wonder why so many people I know have had card hijacking issues within the last 24 hours.

I feel like there isn't one day in this state/school that I don't feel that I'm secretly being filmed for a reality show. Today we had a guest speaker who cracked a Holocaust joke, but not before making blatantly sexist statements. Literally, he said "I'm not trying to be sexist, but women are bad at this." Same guest speaker has offended us previously (and is also a state leader, might I add), yet was welcomed back as if to say 'It's okay to offend 80ish percent of the student body!'

He was obviously trying for the 100%

Was this for like a lecture, or a lunch meeting? I know we get evals for every person that speaks to us in a lecture setting. I'd blow that guy up on those.

lunch lecture. We have had issues with certain people employed by the college saying things that just shouldn't be said in a professional setting too, though. I'm sure that's not uncommon at other schools, unfortunately.

Honestly, there is no way that behavior would have been accepted at my school. He’d have been eaten alive, lunch talk, respected clinician or not. Maybe it’s a philly thing, I don’t know, but I’m sure someone would have called him out and been fiercely backed up by the rest of the audience.

Huh. I really thought this was unique to Caribbean schools that didn't have US etiquette to adhere to. Although my class ultimately got a guest lecture who was a good friend of one of the administrators uninvited forever for his list of sexist and racist comments, as well as sexually harassing behavior...

It seems my school can be pretty divided over this kind of stuff sometimes. If someone speaks up about something, there is always one group that hushes them or tells them they're making a big deal out of nothing, etc. Even on my FB post about this speaker, I had a classmate pretty much tell me to look at the positives of what he said. Didn't realize there were positives, and there was no misinterpreting what he said.

At least in my class particularly, we've had blow-ups over things like religion, politics, and other sensitive issues. Certain groups/people are definitely catered to and their interests are protected over others, who are often not recognized when it comes to exam scheduling around religious holidays (for example). When the deans rescheduled two exams that fell on the Friday and Monday of Easter last year because maybe a handful of people demanded it, other religious classmates, who aren't Christian, were pretty upset that they still don't even get considered for this kind of stuff. The list of examples could go on.

I keep to myself for the most part because I'm getting pretty disenchanted with a few people in my class at this point. You can definitely predict how someone will react to something/treat someone after spending 8 hours a day with them for 2.5 years, lol. Doesn't make me want to roll my eyes any less.

I have several classmates that are very outspoken on women's rights issues (and I adore them) and I highly doubt anyone would hush them for speaking out. These are also some pretty awesome, strong women (and a few men too) that wouldn't tolerate being hushed.

Unfortunately I just feel that we have certain people that tightly adhere to certain stereotypes. I know that's me being judgmental, but I don't really know another way to describe it. There are certain people who reliably will say things like "That's just how people from rural towns are! If you were from one, you'd understand!" "Don't be so sensitive" or "It was meant as a joke."

The organization that this speaker was representing actually just issued somewhat of an apology to the entire school. I know I made a FB post about it, but there were many others who actually contacted the organization directly too.

My sister got into trouble AGAIN costing my parents money (that should be going to my tuition 😉) and causing them grief they don't deserve 🙁.
