Technically where I work the doctors are supposed to go over the estimate with the client but I've definitely had doctors ask me to do it since client financials is usually a struggle at the ER. The conversation that I always dread is explaining paying high end vs low end estimates for in-patient care. I've found that most clients don't really understand why we ask for the high end estimate up front for in-patient care when they can just pay the low end/a fraction of the low end and then pay more later which ends up being most of the financial push back.

It can get pretty annoying sometimes. And it's not the only way to go - when I took my dog to a specialty center for a procedure that our hospital doesn't provide, I found out that they only took the low end of estimate upfront, and then have you pay the difference once all treatment is done and charges finalized. I suppose it's due to different clientele profile. They're located in the suburb with more middle class clients, whereas we're in the downtown of a big city and serve a lot of working class or unemployed clients. If we don't take the high end, we might not be able to get hold of the owner to pay more if there's a need.

When I go over the estimate with clients, I usually explain why there's a range. "Depending on how many days Fluffy needs to stay in the hospital and how much drug/how many tests re-run needed while he's in hospital, the could be a pretty wide range of cost actually incur. It can go as high as $$$, but if there's anything we charge you now that isn't required during the hospitalization, the cost will be refunded back to your account upon discharge." This way I don't have to provide a concrete number for that low end of estimate and it saves much fruitless bargaining.

Yeah, at the ER where I work we take 50% of the high-end (which is usually close to the low-end)
I can't say that I ever fought with someone about payment... although I was present when my co-worker took a call from someone who wanted a refund because their puppy died (read through the discharges... they ended up with a diagnosis of GE but had turned down literally every diagnostic test, and in the monitoring section, they were instructed that some dogs won't get better with symptomatic care and to call back if the issues continue or worsen. They didn't)

When someone you care about watches you struggle with something for the thousandth time but ignores the physically painful reason you're struggling and instead -- for the thousandth time -- acts like you're not doing it "the right way" because you're effing too stupid to understand how it works

I'm so freaking tired of listening to mansplaining, I could scream

No quotes please

I have debilitating arthritis and weak bones

I start crying when I have to open & close some food containers

Not because I'm stupid, but because it feels like someone is slamming my hand with a goddamn hammer and I'm only in my 30s

Again no quotes please, I'm just very frustrated at not being able to do things I think I should be able to do

Sometimes my husband tries to explain things to me about stuff that would be obvious to a child, and I play this game where I see what absurd lengths I can get him to go to for those explanations before he realizes he's been mansplaining all along.

I’m sorry Pips, that’s a really frustrating situation in that they just don’t understand.

second year, I was in clinical anatomy and we had this lab where we were auscultating cardiac sounds in a horse and I straight up couldn’t hear it (~50-65% deaf overall). I started getting frustrated and I asked the person in charge if they could help and they got really frustrated with me and got mad I couldn’t hear it. I’m a very emotional person with even more suppressed emotions and so tears come easily to me, and I’m just crying while auscultating and trying to hear things (I never was able to hear things.)

fourth year, during anesthesia rotation I was so stressed and I couldn’t hear anything at all. I went to go auscultate a patient going to radiology and positioning was bad (aka this cat was in the middle of orthogonal rads and not in a typical sunken heart location) and I couldn’t hear anything. The tech was getting audibly upset with me that I wasn’t able to do it. I didn’t cry that time but I wanted to & it was still really frustrating, so I completely understand. The clinician and the tech got frustrated with me because literally all of my surgery patients (unless it was contraindicated) got an esophageal stethoscope but I’d rather 100% hear a heart than assume I hear one and I’m wrong.

My windows are really cheap in this house and I’ve been sleeping downstairs in the guest bedroom lately (my little dog prefers it, he cries less, and it lets me get more sleep that way.) It’s a windchill of 16 right now, the bed is close to a closed, yet very drafty window and I feel it in my bones. brrrrr

yes I did completely vacate my master bedroom for a much smaller one with a not as nice bed simply because my little dog is overall more comfortable in this one.

Telling an owner that their 4 yo dog passed suddenly in the hospital is one of the worst things I have ever had to do. Great Dane, probably DCM but definitely a heart issue of some kind. So not unheard of but still sucks and I was still working on figuring everything out, so I hadn't prepared the owners for the possibility since she appeared to be stable and I didn't quite know what was going on yet. Sigh.

I'm so ashamed and embarrassed to be attending a veterinary school that fails to acknowledge and purposefully ignores student concerns. I'm disgusted that our upstairs administration are the ones who decide whether or not your mental health crisis is severe enough to grant you an exam deferral. I'm heartbroken that our own faculty serve as contributing causes to the sweeping depression, burn-out, and suicide rates that plague our profession.

And the worst part is that I know that there are other veterinary schools who are even worse off than us.

I need an MRI for my back pain and it is going to take up to 2 weeks for prior authorization and the doctor can’t do anything for said back pain (aside from meds that don’t help) like injections until I get an MRI and this is going to be a long and painful time and I just want to go home home to my mom

Ughhhh, I'm so sorry to hear this. I have major back issues (had a laminectomy a few years ago at L5/S1) and I've found that Salonpas patches can help at least for a little while. I don't know if you've tried those, but just wanted to mention them because they make a big difference for me.

Hope you're feeling better soon <3

I haven’t tried those but I might as well give them a go since I’ve tried almost everything else 😅
Thankfully I haven’t needed surgery for my back yet, just injections so far. Hoping injections are all ill need again this time 🤞

It's been almost 3 weeks and I still don't have a grade for my clin path exam. Also part of this exam is a competency so if I didn't get a minimum score on it then I have to do it again. I think I made the minimum but sure would be nice to know for sure. Have bothered other people on my rotation to make sure it wasn't just me... nope, just no scores yet.

When are you allowed to bother the rotation? I’m feel like for us they’re required to have them in by a certain time after the rotation?

I don't know that there's a deadline for after the rotation. Maybe there is, but I'm not familiar with it. There's a deadline for the semester but that's unhelpful here.

Or you might get stuck being interview partners with me one day in the next few weeks, but I'm not sure everyone would call that a prize
Since interviews are done, I feel like it's okay for me to say that y'all, this actually happened and I think my internet sleuthing skills freaked @LetItSnow out a little bit 🤣

I really laughed about it.

Just another reminder that the vet community is small and you truly don't know who you will bump into at various times.

I also got to do an interview with one of my best friends from vet school, which was a lot of fun and made for a more relaxed interview.

In hindsight, I should have waited to ask until the end because I had no plan for how to recover from the awkwardness if I asked if you were LetItSnow and you looked at me like I had 3 heads 🤣 Must have been feeling really confident that day. It was nice to meet you!!

Dammit. Now I wish I had been faster on the uptake and played dumb 'n perplexed.

Did you ID him from the video of him wolf bragging with the cat?

Some things you either know or you don't know.
I mean, I get the concept of a wolf brag, but I'm intrigued by there being a video with a cat.

Edit: I have been enlightened 🤣

Just a thought, @SkiOtter ... Would you consider some stretches as an add-on treatment? Yoga By Adrienne on YouTube has an awesome "Yoga for Back Pain" video that has gotten rave reviews from other people.

I have a syrinx that was pinching a nerve in my upper-thoracic spine and causing an uncomfortable shooting pain. I was skeptical but the stretching in that yoga video actually helped my pain.

I would also suggest OTC topical lidocaine patches if no one has mentioned it already.

Heating pads are also the greatest invention in the history of the world.

I currently cannot even bend or twist so yoga definitely is out for now 😅 once I’m able to move more, I’ll definitely be trying some yoga in addition to my other back exercises.
I’ll look into lidocaine patches too! And yessss heating pads are amazing and I love mine.

Update: had my MRI. Have another bulged disc. Can’t get a steroid epidural until the end of March because I’ve gotten my first COVID vaccine. So it needs to be two weeks after my second dose. Which means 5 more weeks until hopefully some pain relief. This is a very privileged first world problem but I’m still annoyed.

my hubby has a gel heating pad thing...we just pop it into the microwave for like 2 minutes, and he lays on the bed with it. It helps him a lot between injections. (he has had a spine doctor tell him that what he needs is a spine transplant....there is no way to do surgery, it is too bad---bulged disks all the way up and down, and combined with spinal stenosis, he hurts. a lot)

what the heck is a spine transplant....😱

Oh god, the poor thing. I can't imagine.

For anyone else currently going through online classes: has anyone else noticed that there are just so many more questions being asked during lecture than when things were in person? Like... a crazy number of questions to the point where lecturers end up running behind. It’s like not seeing 100+ classmates surrounding you makes you forget that other people’s class time is disrupted by the sheer number of questions being asked. And usually they’re things that will either be explained later, or can be googled. I obviously don’t have a problem with someone asking a question to clarify something the lecturer might have messed up on, but it’s gotten really really bad. Questions can be asked after class or emailed, and the lecturer can reply to the whole class if it’s something everyone should know. That’s just my opinion. End rant.

@ajs513 I wonder if people used to ask those questions during the break, and now there are no real breaks?

(Not sure how your school does things, but for our in-person lectures, we always had 10 minutes between every hour of lecture & people would often go down to talk to the faculty during those times).

@ajs513 i actually feel like our class asks less questions at this point but we might just be jaded and over all of it at this point as 3rd years 😂 quite a few of us do school in pods too so that pry helps some

Definitely it can vary by class and prof though cause interruptions vs chat questions vs unsavy tech profs its definitely a wide range

@ajs513 Is it possible to email your class rep and ask them to have professors hold questions until the end? That’s what a lot of my professors said they’re going to be doing if too many questions get asked. If it’s one or two during the lecture, that’s fine and they’ll answer them, but if it’s going to cause them to go over time and run behind, they save the rest of the questions until the end. We use echo 360 for our livestreamed lectures in the mornings and there’s a question feature built in that people can type their questions, so if anything doesn’t get answered the professor can also go back after class and either answer in echo or can send the answer to the whole class.

@SkiOtter surprisingly, this issue has been brought up to the administration, and nothing was done about it. It’s only getting worse and worse. We use zoom so chat can be saved but it’s not used that way.

I agree with @MixedAnimals77 that our class hardly ever ask questions via zoom. BUT a lot of people that attend in person ask questions. Back when we were in person, if we knew there were people from the other campuses (since we have 3) listening, we would use a microphone to ask the question so it would be recorded. And, the professors are supposed to repeat the questions for the panapto recordings anyway. Somehow during the pandemic this has gone out the window. If someone who is in person asks a question, we just hear muttering. Whatever they said, we'll never know..

This is definitely when we used to ask questions, too

Just because my car isn't physically in my driveway does not make it okay for you to push snow into. Why the heck do you have a truck with a plow sitting horizontally in your front yard anyways? Oh, and I saw you look out your front door at me as I had to get out of my car to go shovel since I couldn't even get fully in the driveway otherwise. Didn't think to offer to help? Or even idk... apologize?

People are freaking rude man.
