RANT HERE thread

I don't rant often but this has me perplexed ...
I injured my hip 2 weeks ago (sports related) and it's gotten worse with rest, ice, and NSAIDs. I called my hospital's sports med ortho office to make an appt and was told they don't do hips, uh what? They transferred me to the regular ortho office where their voicemail said they specialize in hip replacements. Umm, I'm 28 years old

That's still probably the right place. Hip injuries in younger people aren't that common. Speaking from experience

🙁 I'm hoping it's just a really bad iliopsoas strain and not something more serious like a torn labrum or a stress fracture. How does one live without exercise?

It's not much fun.

I had trochanteric bursitis and tried PT and everything else. It works for most people. I hope it works for you 🙂

Thanks. Having a bum hip is seriously the worst thing ever!

I had a suspected stress fracture in my left hip back in high school. By far one of the worst pains I've had. If I tried to be fully weight bearing on it (like stand on one leg) it would give out entirely. I never got a scan done so it was never confirmed/properly treated, but it took me probably at least a solid 2 months to walk without a limp again. At the time it happen, I thought it was just a bad muscle strain because it was late in the field hockey seasons and I thought I just didn't warm up properly, so I continued to run/play for like a 1-2 week into my limp. Hoping it's not anything too seriously either for you.

And I totally feel you. I'm doing PT for a bilateral rotator cuff tendonopathy type injury from chronic overuse. I hate not being able to do a lot of arm/shoulder exercise I used to be able to do and it's decreased my overall exercise because I do a lot of combined lifts that involved both upper and lower body.

And for the whole confusing department thing, that happened to me when I tried to schedule an appointment to get a dx of rotator cuff injury so I could start PT. I called the school's Sports Medicine department and spoke with someone who was said that wasn't a sports medicine injury and sort of gave me a hard time about scheduling the appointment. I said I would see whichever service they thought I should see, but they ended up scheduling it with Sports med.

Stress fractures are the worst! I had one in my tibia ~12 years ago from playing lacrosse and doing so much running in poorly supportive cleats. It was a sharp pain when I was weight bearing and a dull ache when I wasn't.

Yeah so the Friday before last I ran 6 miles then did a strength circuit afterwards. My hip started to ache when I did leg extensions with a resistance band and it's gone downhill from there. I thought I just overworked my hip flexors too much so I continued exercising ... ran 10 miles Saturday, short run Monday, spin sculpt on Tuesday, hot yoga Thursday, ran 6 miles Friday then it was feeling really awful by Saturday night after I had been on my feet all day at the vet hospital 2 days back-to-back. Iced it and took an NSAID Saturday night then ran 14 miles Sunday morning (in hind sight :smack:). Ever since that long run on Sunday I've got sharp pain in my groin with each step on top of the dull ache I felt when it started. This is my 4th day of no exercise with no improvement. At this point I think it's unlikely that I'll be running the rock n' roll marathon in June, which makes me really really really sad and confused because I've run marathons before and have never had hip issues. I have an appt with ortho on Monday morning.

Any idea how long you have to do PT? Are you able to do some exercise to maintain at least some level of fitness?

The type of pain you're describing sounds similar to what I had but still fingers crossed for you!

As for PT, I've been doing it for about 6 weeks at this point and I imagine I'll be doing it for at least another 6 since we just did my mid-PT re-evaluation. I'm off for these two weeks because I'm at NBC and can't get into the city for my appointments. I've been trying to keep up some exercise and I do still lift (CrossFit), but I try to modify/switch out exercise as much as possible. I was allowing myself one day a week for the past 5 weeks to do a shoulder lift, because I was doing the CrossFit Open and I wasn't allowed to switch out a movement. I've also been fitting in some running. I'm technically running my first half marathon next weekend which I haven't been training for as much as I had hoped. My longest run was probably 2 weeks ago and was 7 miles (without much running prior to that) at a fairly decent pace, so I think i'll be okay. I'm trying to fit in more shorter runs/one long run on my current rotation. I have been getting some shin splints which surprises me since I'm wearing the same style of shoes I've run in for the past 5 years or so ( Mizuno Wave Inspire) without issues and normally I only get shin splints when it's time for new shoes. I've been wondering if it's because I've been wearing less supportive shoes to lift in at CrossFit.

Ugh, that's a long time of PT! Props to you for sticking with it!
You're doing an awesome job of maintaining fitness, I'm sure you'll be fine for your half marathon!
I get shin splints on and off and what finally fixed it is switching shoes. I ran in Asics and Mizunos religiously but finally parted ways. I now wear Hokas (for running only) and it's like running on clouds. They're amazing. They're super ugly but may be worthwhile to try out if you can find them on sale for cheap.

most PT runs from 4-12 weeks. Some types go longer, but mostly 1-3 months.

My on call shift literally just started and I already have heard an emergency that will be here in about an hour. I have a feeling I may be in for a long night.

Oh, and rant at myself for getting into asinine Facebook debates with people who think that peer-reviewed publications aren't valid sources of information but that a blog post literally titled "Italian Court Rules Mercury And Aluminum In Vaccines Cause Autism: US Media Continues Total Blackout Of Medical Truth" totally is.

I need to stop involving myself in these things; I always regret it.

Yup that's the cue to nope right out of there

Human medicine. I point out a problem over a year ago. Today: Let's schedule that MRI ASAP because most likely is a fatal problem, but we might not be able to fix it right away so you may need to delay your move for your new job. We are moving as fast as we can (now that we finally see the problem a year later.)

I want to kick them all. Repeatedly.

Ok. Back to Super mom mode. (****)

Oh no! Sending good vibes your way.

It's my kiddo still. They now finally agree that all the problems she's had this past year are likely related. The most likely Dx is something that is potentially and often suddenly fatal. I have 2 months until I move to a new job and new doctors and new insurance. I NEED a diagnosis at minimum and if it is something dangerous, we NEED to get her on a surgical table yesterday.

Part of me wants it not to be what they are thinking because it's so scary and part of me wants them to be right, because it can be fixed if caught early enough. But it's been a year and the symptoms are more obvious every day. If we are too late to completely reverse this...

I'm just trying to breath and assume it will all be ok. I hate when I let a potential problem pop into my head and push it aside as the thought of someone who has seen too much and I blow it off. I just gave them the problems, not what the little monster in the back of my head was coming up with for Dx... and the ****ing little monster might have been right all along. Maybe I could have pushed them farther faster if I had faith in myself to beat them to the Dx, I've been right every time before. Why not now? But there is that nagging fear that they won't take me seriously because I'm not a MD or DVM. **** it. I've been right every ****ing time! And if one of you ass hats who likes to make people feel like they can't know **** since they haven't been through professional school wants to argue: fine but later. After I know whether or not my kid will survive. Freaking unicorn child...

Breathing....

Thank you PBC!

Made home made mac n cheese with jalapenos and andouille sausage. Sadly needs more heat despite using 3-4 peppers. The rant part is that I just touched my eye and now it burns despite having washed my hands after handling the peppers.

LOTF, so very sorry that you're all going through so much. How terrifying it must all be. 🙁 Sending lots of good thoughts to you, your kiddo, and the rest of your family. I hope they listen to you and that your daughter gets the help she needs.

My husbands aunt went on a rant on FB about her neighbors dog barking at 1:30am.. She approached the neighbors about it and basically was told to get over it. Then asking for advice on how to handle the situation on FB someone suggested she "poison the dog".. I of course commented and said its not the dogs fault and that suggesting that as an option is disgusting... The person then says it was sarcasm... It pisses me off that someone would think that poisoning someone's dog is funny. What is wrong with people?!?

Receptionist: *sees me printing off euthanasia paperwork for the fourth euthanasia today*: Are you killing something else?
Me: Yep. Bad diagnosis, no money.
Receptionist: Well you're just Dr Death today, aren't you?

Ima smack a bitch. Like that makes me feel any better about myself.

Can I strangle her for you? I got pissed off just reading this. 😡

My SO just let my dog lick his steak knife. Thankfully I started yelling before he could get more than one lick in, but still, WTF?!?!

So this barely qualifies as a rant, more of a whine.... But the stress of this past week is written all over my face. I am so broken out that I might as well be twelve again.

The worst. My skin gets nasty near finals. It's not just acne, I get stress rashes on my cheeks too. Just redness all around.

Besides those stressful times, my skin is actually getting better as I get older (that or I've finally found a decent routine/cleansing brush). I just try to look past the wrinkle I've caused by being a side sleeper 😡

**** allergies! I hate using drugs to control my symptoms but I'm going to have to break down and buy some. I haven't been able to breathe out of my nose for like three weeks now and my eyes keep watering.

Found out my mentor met with his other mentee 2 weeks ago, but I've been getting no response to my emails at all AND he said he would contact me himself to set up something. Doesn't really do much for my constant feelings of inadequacy. I think I'll give him another week and then I'm going to ask for a new mentor.

A mentor is really important, so make sure the relationship is something you want.

I do want this particularly mentor because I am extremely lucky in that I was connected to an ACZM boarded doctor. A lot of my frustration with it comes from something I'm not going to post publicly, but the fact that I've stayed on top of trying to meet with him and I find out he was able to make time for someone else but not me is just annoying. And that news came on a bad day.

There must be a time-curse with this block. EVERY SINGLE day, 95% of our professors go 3-6 minutes over. They even got a mass email about making sure to give us our break and every. single. professor. has gone over, giving us only 2-3 minutes to get up and use the restroom, get snacks, etc. I'm so sad I really need that 10 minute break 🙁

There's this weird computer tone coming from somewhere in the library. It's been constant for the last ten minutes, and it's driving me crazy.

I agree. Our Associate Dean even told us to set a timer and have it go off and just get up when the 50 minutes are over but a lot of us are afraid of professors getting upset/retaliating during exams, etc.

We used to have this one guy who sat smack in the middle who, if things ran over, would slam his computer, stand up (very tall guy, too), pack up noisily, and stomp out.

Totally juvenile, totally unprofessional, and kinda awesome all at once. It was really funny every time he did it.

You should suggest your Associate Dean come in at the end time and unplug their mics for a couple lectures. That should shut them up.

The thing that was even worse was when they acknowledged they were going over and it sucked but they were doing it anyway. Usually because they were late to class or talking about nothing important for the first 10mins.
This exact thing happened 3/4 times today. So frustrating for them to look at the clock (already 3 min over and say): "Oh yeah I can totally get through these last 15 slides" :rage:
