I feel like I’m taking over this thread sometimes but last week they hung my drywall. This next part is far from a rave, but on Wednesday, the drywall crew was pulled over on their way to my house and subsequently got detained by immigration. I feel awful for those guys and their families and hope everyone is okay. Back to the rave part, my builder arranged a new drywall crew, and they have started the drywall finishing process. Meanwhile, the concrete crew has been back to pour my porches and stuff. Front porch, sidewalk, back porch, and propane tank pad were done today and they placed posts for my fence. They‘ll pour the driveway and the rest of the fence footer next week. Exciting progress! I also picked an exterior paint color (Alabaster by Sherwin Williams….its a light creamy white) so I think that may start next week too. Paint, staining the front door, and installing porch posts are all we lack on the exterior! Well, aside from landscaping but that’ll happen in the spring. Any plant people want to design me a flower bed?

You aren’t taking over the thread at all, @JaynaAli. I enjoy hearing about the house. The construction worker shortage due to excessive ICE enforcement was part of why my house took forever. It is a rough world out there in housing.
I like that exterior paint color. It has warm undertones and probably will not show dirt.

We survived day one. Very brief tears (from her and husband/myself) at drop off but she got distracted quickly. She was there from 7-430ish. Didn't love that one of the caretakers had her sleeping in a bouncer seat at pickup, but when the manager saw that she actually wasn't happy either so it sounds like it will be addressed at least. But we all survived!you are giving me hope!! We go next Tuesday
Week one done.

I submitted my app today!
Finished the first week of vet school. It was a lot, but I’m enjoying learning. I am still missing Grogu a lot, and Finn clearly does as well, but he is starting to move around and chirp a little more a week later, and I have been trying to take care of myself as best I can. Already made some solid friends at school too, so overall this week has been a win.

She's painted and she's beautiful. 😍 The cedar porch posts were delivered today, too...placing the posts and painting the front door are the last exterior things remaining (except for grass, but we need to get the septic installed before getting sod or seeding anything).
Inside, we have drywall finished and ready for paint. Tile guys have started prep for the bathroom tile and my dog wash in the laundry room. Doors and trim have been delivered. Cabinets are delayed a bit because the custom cabinetmaker is behind, but we're going to start the tile and my closet shelving in the meantime.
We also got the backyard fence installed while the concrete guys were already out there pouring the driveway, sidewalk, and porches. Now the dogs can go out and visit their future "territory".

Did my first 208 extraction on a cadaver (my school only allows us to practice on model dogs) with the help of a veterinary dentist!!
First off, I was surprised that I pulled 2/3 roots without cracking
Second, I would make a gasp sound when the teeth came out because I was so focused on pulling the tooth out carefully that when it did, it scared the **** out of me.
Third, my third root did crack, but I was hoping it would so the dentist could teach me how to fix it.

We've reached only 1 month left until Steel Ball Run episode 2, I finally see the rain coming after this brutal drought of content. I've been watching the first six parts over again to prepare myself and forcing my bf to watch it for the first time... he's now also been converted to a Jojo's obsessive

Finally booked tickets to Australia and New Zealand. In business lie flat seats. 😬 it was stressful and we might be crazy for taking our toddler with us.
Thank you points and miles for taking $20k in tickets and only spending closer to 3k (would have been less but I had to buy some points to top off)

Last week I got a confirmation that the research I submitted to the government of Nova Scotia was reviewed and considered valid, and that they will be reclassifying our native "ermine" from Mustela erminea (Stoat) to Mustela richardsonii (American ermine). This will affect all future publications and communications put out by the province, and given that it's a different species, potentially management strategies over time. I noticed the discrepancy between stated ranges of the species and collected info on the 2021 declaration of Mustela richardsonii and its habitat. Feels very nice to know my taxonomy hobby has now made a real world impact 😎

I didn't see the Watering Hole thread bumped, and the Random Stuffs thread was full of rabies, but this isn't a huge rave, just a positive experience. I had my very very first client experience (of my life!) with y'all recently. Just a SA GP experience, nothing special, but I really pushed for some relatives to allow me to take their cat (I'm not the owner), and just... everyone there of all stripes, literally 100% were super incredibly nice and positive and chill and amazing. Even the DVM was very... patient, professional, cheerful, warm, human, able to answer questions. So it was really my first time in the clinical rooms at any vet office in my life. My friend's dad offered a job once when I applied but I had already found something different, so I could've had more SA GP exposure in my 20s but like... it's always been a huge part missing in my life, and I was already super biased going in just from long exposure to vetties and pre-vettie types on SDN knowing you guys are (by and large on average) super super super amazing and really cheerful and caring. I'm *so* cynical and bitter with human med and *SO* beat down with the whole broken system (not just coverage, safety nets, billing, administrative BS, greed/fraud) but just... I think there's more abrasive personality types that go into human medicine. Not trying to dunk on the field (there's many angels too). I've just run into way, way too many bitter, cold, or downright rude human health care people in person, and it's like "yike."
Just... had a good time. Made extra trips to pick up lab results and another trip yesterday to drop off more sample from the litterbox. And really pushing to go back soon-ish for f/u visit and all the vaccines she's been missing for many, many, many, many years.
The only concern was ELISA came back FIV+. If I were the owner I'd push for the extra PCR/Western Blot testing, but I already put several hundred out of pocket on my CC and will get reimbursed, and the owner(s) don't want to pay for 100% FIV+ confirmation at this point but are okay with some of the vaccines. I'll take any wins I can get for this kitty. She seems super not herself and mopey and lethargic. Might just be fleas, but the FIV+ I need to read much more about (not asking for advice here, don't worry). Kind of internally upset that the owner allowed the outdoor feral cats to sneak into our garage door and attack her multiple times, which might be the source of the FIV, but nobody knows when she may have gotten it.
Anyway, thank you vetties for by and large being super friendly and professional. I've heard and read enough thousands of posts (not counting WW posts) of difficult and ****ty clients, so I wanted to make sure I wasn't one of them at all, and each visit I tried to be super thankful and positive. And I know the s* rate is higher than even the human med side, and that is super tragic and I hate it so much, but I just wanted to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation for doing hopefully what you actually enjoy doing and hopefully brings you some semblance of career satisfaction, one patient at a time. Thank you, and I can't wait to have my own cats and dogs (etc.?) in the future so I can have more great, happy interactions with y'all.

I found out this week that I was recommended for an award through the USDA VMLRP for doing large animal work in a designated shortage zone! AND they recently increased the award amount to $40,000 annually, renewable for 3 years, and they pay the tax on the award amount. Absolutely incredible for me personally... it pays to see goats and pigs!!

Chase is usually the starting set. I broke the "5/24" rule because I needed AA miles so got a citi card, but after you exhaust chase there's citi, amex, bilt, and capital one. CSP is my main card since the CSR got $$$. Living in the middle of nowhere I can't use half the benefits so it's really wasn't worth me keeping the CSR. Since I'm over 5/24 now I'm considering venturing to bilt since their system still transfers 1:1 to hyatts. However my home airport is a united hub so chase is really where I spend alot of points in general. Alot also depends on clinic ownership timeline and a side personal project and opening business cards. Chase cc points have treated me well though. I'll have flown business twice now and premium econ once. Tons of paid for hotel stays. Overall I cant complain. Plus I have a spouse so that helps with increasing the amount of points you can get to spend from sign-up bonuses.Lol same! Singapore, Quatar, and Ethiad are the recommended first class experiences. Maybe one day I'll try for Q suites when the middle east settles down a bit and we head over there, but I feel too simple to even be flying business let alone first 😅
FatWallet Finance Forums closed several years ago, and that was my daily fix of credit card rewards nerdery. That and creditboards.com/forums. Stopped visiting there years ago out of boredom. I've heard of NerdWallet and ThatPointsGuy and FlyerTalk being super popular forums for travel-related deals specifically, but reading your post perked me up, since literal years go by on SDN where people geek out on this stuff and I really enjoy it haha.Chase is usually the starting set. I did several sign-up bonuses for 50,000 AA miles (Citi I think?) and another card for either United Airlines or another airlines that was acquired maybe 5 years ago. US Airways? Can't remember. But got several domestic economy round-trip tickets, car rental, and hotel stays for "free." Then cancelled before the 1 year anniversary and the AF kicked in.
I mostly have my stable of non-travel, straight cash back cards. Citi Dividend, Discover, and Chase Freedom for rotating 5% cash back categories. Citi Costco as my 5% gas card (5% at Costco Gas, 4% everywhere else) for when I don't get a quarter of 5% gas. Citi Costco is my 3% restaurant card when I don't have a 5% quarter. Had Citi mtvU/Forward for a LONG time for 5% cash back on all restaurants and even Amazon. Grrr. Used those ThankYou Points to redeem for student loan cash back. Helped a bit.
Fidelity is my 2% card right now for everything if I can't get more cash back elsewhere.
Think I have $300,000 or so in credit limits now after 20 years of credit repair and CW (credit hoaring) and learning about how to really optimize FICO and other credit scores. So even if I only spend $500-1000 per month and PIF, having such a high aggregate limit keeps my per-card utilization ratio and aggregate utilization ratio basically at 0%, which keeps my credit scores pretty super high.
I think SDN has a Finance subforum I used to post in a whole bunch, but it felt as though I was the one giving advice but wasn't receiving so started going "what's the point?" with all the hours of typing.
Can't wait til I'm married and wif and I can really go stir crazy with the travel rewards.
Oh! I follow Jeb Brooks/Greener Grass on YouTube. I'm sure there's 100's of people doing airline reviews, but he and his wife's personalities work for me. They do a ton of business class and first class flight reviews including all the fancy flights to Asia, Aus/NZ, Europe, etc. on the new lie-flat suites. Some of those flights are $10K-20K or more per person per flight if paying cash, which is insane.
I have a Chase sapphire preferred, but most of my travel is driving with dogs so the main expense is hotels, and I like to book direct for hotels rather than using a third party/points so I can continually check back and make sure I have the cheapest rates. So I stopped using it as much and mostly just use my Chase freedom unlimited for cash back. Saved my cash back for over a year and bought new kitchen things for the new house. Currently racking up more points as we make big purchases like appliances and furniture and will use the rest of the cash back for other house things I would otherwise struggle to justify but really want. I know I could get a better cash back rate with more/other cards, but I don’t love juggling multiple and keeping track of what pays more each month. I do have a discover it card leftover from my student days. I assume that will shortly become a capital one card with the buyout, but I only use that card like once a year so the account stays active as it’s my longest line of credit.

Yeah I do ToP and 10x on FB and get daily drop email which imo isn't as useful but I occasionally catch extra point deals with them. Your CF definitely accumulates points so you might be sitting on a pile. Yep my Aus/NZ flights would have been like 20k cash for me to buy for my so and I so Im not complaining about the measily 3k I spent plus pry another 1k in taxes and fees since I had to pay 10% of the cash price for the toddler to come alongFatWallet Finance Forums closed several years ago, and that was my daily fix of credit card rewards nerdery. You can book direct with points. So if you like to stay at say ihg. You go into your csp rewards portal and transfer to your ihg account and book direct through ihg once the points hit your account. Chase added alot more domestic hotel partnerships outside of hyatt and Marriott in the last year. Now weather the points vs cash price is worth it just depends. You can also combine your points between the cfu and csp-if you didnt know.I have a Chase sapphire preferred, but most of my travel is driving with dogs so the main expense is hotels, and I like to book direct for hotels rather than using a third party/points so I can continually check back and make sure I have the cheapest rates. Already capital one 😒 and I have mixed feels about it. Their website definitely isn't as user friendly as discovers was imo.
Good to know! I’ll have to look into it more, especially if things changed. My HYSA was switched to CapOne, but not my cc yet. So far no real difference in the HYSA experience, but right now that’s just holding my money set aside for the house and I use an Ally HYSA for most of my actual savings. I’ll probably close the CapOne HYSA when the house is done.
I think Capital One is keeping the Discover brand intact as well as the existing Discover card network (cuz that also included Diner's Club and some others). Oh yeah already have that signed up a few years ago when I started cc points. Silly fact our home airport didnt have any interviews for months. We ended up in NYC to see my SOs grandmother so we did our global entry interviews out there. Discovered (after three years of living in my town) that I can just go to the library to do homework. You’re telling me I don’t have to go to a coffee shop? I don’t need a lib card to sit in a private study desk?! I can study and do work in peace?! I love my kids and my pets and husband but lemme tell ya, it’s so amazing going there for 3 focused hours instead of 20 million thoughts and distractions while trying to name organic structures while sitting at home around everything 🥹 bless 🙏🏼 I kept telling myself “when I go to vet school I’ll just go to the school’s library or the vet schools study center, that’ll be so nice! But I can do that now!!! Wish I would’ve thought of this years ago 😭

Specialty boards written and finished!
They went better than I expected so I'm hopeful I managed to squeak by and won't need to repeat this whole endeavor next year.
