I have yet to meet a pathologist I don't like!! Maybe I will join y'all lmao
i LOVEEE our path professor. very sad the extent of my path class time is only 6 weeks (aka only 18 hours 😢). he is the absolute best and we had such a good time during our six lectures with him.

pathologists rock!!!!!

I am so curious about the curriculum at other schools. It's so different depending on where you go! Does your school break it up across the different years or are the 6 weeks all the path time you get for the whole program?

At WSU we have a half semester of general pathology in first year, then a full semester of sys path and clin path in second year. Our curriculum is still the usual "subject-based" style rather than the system blocks a lot of programs seem to do now. I think I prefer it that way just for organizational reasons, but definitely see the positives of a more integrated curriculum.

i have to honestly say i have no clue. the pathology professor said he wouldn't be seeing us again, and that we only got those 6 weeks with him. for the rest of the semester i have:

response to threat (all the ologies, except pathology, in the span of 4 weeks)
hematology and lymphatics (in the span of 3 weeks)

then in the spring i have:

population health
nutrition, metabolism and the GI tract
integument and eyes

maybe i'd be able to take clin path as an elective during third year because we only have electives and rotations that year?

Clin path is a different set of pathologists than anatomic pathology. Guaranteed you’ll have clinical pathology instruction as part of your core curriculum somewhere. Not sure if you’ll get chemistry stuff in with your hematology course or if they’ll sprinkle that in to your systems classes, but it has to be taught as a core class somehow, it’s too important.

Edit: you should def take a clin path elective if you want, but the basics will be presented to you somehow, I’m confident.

i’ll pm you our 4 year schedule! maybe you’d be able to shed some light on where other path would fit in bc rn i’m reading it and drawing a blank haha

This is wild lol
I guess maybe your curriculum has the stuff we learn in sys path/clin path woven throughout your other classes?? Idk, I like having a dedicated class for it but I can see how learning about which tests assess which problems in the context of the relevant organ systems could be helpful

New externship week started! Feeling very excited about this one. Got to place 3 catheters on my own, and help scrub joints. Plus this facility has its own water treadmill and salt room for clients. The vet is super nice, and very encouraging about my internship selections.
tell me more about this salt room! like for grounding?

Had a lot of fun shadowing ophthalmology yesterday! It was nice to actually be somewhat familiar with something haha. I’d love to go back!

Now watching a video on how to do surgeon knots. Actually insane that in my 9th week of school we are learning how to handle sutures and tie knots that are needed for surgery! Maybe I really AM 6% veterinarian?? 😱

I still don't know how to do a surgeons knot 🫠 Practice until your fingers fall off
Isn't it just a regular square knot with a double wrap on the first throw? Or am I thinking of something else? 😅

Pro tip: drop your hands! I struggled with throwing square knots consistently until I realized I was pulling up to tighten, rather than down and away lol

That is what I was taught

Pro tip: drop your hands! I struggled with throwing square knots consistently until I realized I was pulling up to tighten, rather than down and away lol
Other pro tip: start your loop high up so if it isn’t flattening out, you can stick your pinky through and provide something for it to lay down on and it will untwist itself.

A lot of people do this.

I've also found that sharply saying "hey! HEY! Don't do that!" at my suture helps when it's being stubborn.

It's very common for learners to pull their hands up, which makes it much more likely for them to throw a slip knot. There's a time and a place for slip knots, but the first couple of years of vet school are not it. Keep your hands low, keep movements slow, and you'll pick up speed naturally as your get more comfortable. Also practice good ergonomics early, your hands should largely be operating in a small box to throw knots.

Got to place an NG tube at work this past weekend! I missed the first time and was able to adjust and fix it the second time and I felt very cool 😆
Also 2 of 3 finals done!! One more on Thursday and then I get a whole 4 day weekend before block 2 starts 😍

Bitter sweet rave. I love Etsy artists so much.

Got the watercolor painting of my baby back today and it is just perfect. He is so sweet, looking so innocent on top of his favorite toy. And then the artist I commissioned that makes life sized felted birds sent me pics of the finished product today. It’s incredible how lifelike it looks. I’ll never be able to bring my baby back, but least I can still have pieces of him here with me through artwork, pictures and videos.

My remaining boy is finally starting to act like a bird again. It is so hard, but we are both moving forward as best we can and will never forget our baby.

wait same. i got flu and covid yesterday and literally had the worst chills/fever last night and now i feel so achy
I was smart last night and took some of my acetaminophen left over from my surgery, so I'm not sure I was feverish last night, but I did not possess the same forethought this morning and rolled out the door to work without it. I'm definitely feeling it. It's going to be a long day.

Mild rant: I needed bras now and couldn’t wait for a sale like I normally would. Why do you have to pay so much if you’re not a “conventional (ie: skinny small)” size???
For real. What do you mean I have to go to special stores or online only retailers and pay upwards of $100 for effective bras?

Where did you go to get sized? I haven't done it in YEARS. I probably shouldn't bother until PPj Jr. is weaned though...

Also rave: We just had our first family vacation to NYC. We drove (~12 hours) and PP9 Jr was a pro. Literally did fine. So many people warning us and telling us not to go, that we'll be miserable, etc. Sure, she had some fussy periods throughout the trip, but she's also a baby???? We wore her all around the city and didn't push her past her limits in order for us parents to see everything and we had a great time.
