Saw this at a bookstore last night. Thought you guys might like this...cuz all this country needs is a good dose of Chuck Norris karate a**kicking.

Inpatient next week I think. Presenting terrifies me. I got down the 30 second presentations this week, but not a long, drawn out presentation.
The one thing that has helped me on my inpatient presentations is to read extensively on your patients. With the VA's EMR this is pretty easy. When I pick up a new admission, I generally work backwards through their last few admissions and carry everything forward. The ticket is to be able to answer every question the attending will ask you about the patient.

Easy Qs include "Why are they on X medication?" "Is their DMII controlled" (No matter how you answer, they'll want to know how you know, here last HgbA1c)

I just think it is important that everyone is informed on the issues and everyone votes this year. Our country is in crisis!
I agree, and I wish I could participate more and be an more informed voter, I just don't have the time. I generally voted Republican because they used represent my fiscal views, but Bush went away from that with creating Homeland Security and the second Iraq War. I don't believe the Dems are correct in their belief that one can fix societal problems with more programs, especially because it generally is done by taxing the most successful of us.

One more week of peds. Can't believe the 4 weeks is almost over! (It helped that I was in the ED all week this week.) Also can't believe I came home last night and slept for 6 hours, got up for a few and watched a movie on tv, then fell back asleep for another 7 hours.

Here's my take on Palin (finally)-

She's human - as the news spreads about her short-comings and questionable decisions, this is made obvious. Even a politician cannot control what their kids do - they will do what they want in the end. I like the fact that she decided to keep her kid knowing he would have Down's (this is a more personal matter for me). I like that she is not forcing her kid into an abortion, however, I don't know if the girl was ever given any options other than keeping the baby.

As a politician - I like that she was able to cut wasteful spending on the government side and even got rid of the personal cook and driver. That was proof she wasn't for all the extra stuff that's not needed. I also like that she took into consideration her state's economic position and did what she could to help them out - like cutting the state tax on gas.

Other than these things, I don't know much about her. More information needs to be released through a reliable source before I pass any judgment on her. I just can't trust TV stations anymore...too much gossip and not enough real talk.

Is this what you were wanting or did you want something different h24g?

I guess you don't need a personal cook when you are collecting per diem for food...while living at home.

Going to be a long week. Pace of the ED is much more my style than 3 patients total in a day. uggh.

Have had my first horror story experience. At least I was warned ahead of time...to the point I was expecting it to be worse than it was.

hey! i can't believe a quarter of internship is over!!!

i apologize for not posting too much, but i was a little busy doing surgical scut work to have a chance to do very much of anything closely resembling a social life (SDN included!)

i must say though, i really love being an intern! it's pretty awesome 😀

and i see that matchitis season is in full gear... please fourth years don't forget to wear your bug spray

great to see you are still alive sleepy!

as for me, probably not as much. You know it's bad when you are too tired to study at night that you are willing to get up earlier to get it done. uggh. way too early for studying and definitely got up earlier than I ever remember.

Ended up not taking the exam this weekend...wasn't posted. I guess I'll have to try for next weekend. Or sometime this week if I'm not sleeping as soon as I get home. Stayed awake all day today though, so probably won't be awake the rest of the week.

You know you don't have any money when your determining factor on where to rotate (for an elective) depends on whether they offer free housing.

Had an interesting experience last week. Went to the Royal College of Surgeons museum in Edinburgh. I must say it was a neat little place. Some of their specimens are older than our country. The war injuries were very diverse. Also, they had their scandal of hiring people to kill for anatomy specimens.

Holy crap, just got owned by the Peds shelf. That was so friggin hard!!
So, what do you do to prepare for the shelf exams? Are they written or computer-based? (Anyone can feel free to answer.)

I'm on medicine, and at my school it lasts eons, so I haven't done a shelf exam yet. I was planning on getting a subscription to Kaplan's Step 2 Qbank to prepare for the shelf exams, since doing questions helped me for Step I. Would that be good prep, or is there something better?

In other news, today my team started rounding at 10am, and when I left at 5pm, we were only halfway finished with our census of 12. 😱

For the seniors reading this, remember to participate later this year with the Matchitis 2009 Survey!

Shelf exams are in old scantron/mcat/etc format. I've been using Case Files, Kaplan notes to prepare usually, with some scattered Pretest and Kaplan Qbook.

USMLE World is supposed to be excellent for shelf exams as well, but I'm saving that for Step 2.

And I don't take an actual shelf exam...I take some other exam online. Basically, what I hear is that it is dependent on what your school decides to have you do.

Edit: And about the studying....I study what I have the energy to study...which is almost nothing right now.

You guys should start using USMLE World questions for your rotations. Then go through the entire set of questions again while studying for Step II...twice. You will kick butt on the boards if you do that, and it is a great way to study for rotations. I wish I had known that a year ago.

Thanks for the tip 👍 I was wondering if that would be to any benefit. Then again, I'm taking the comlex, not the usmle, but I'm sure it will help with all but one section (OMT).

I think my body has associated almost time to sleep with eating. So now I have to go to bed hungry (because I refuse to eat this late).

I was going through the same thoughts as Pontifex on this one - though I've heard rave things about it, I was waiting to use USMLEWORLD for Step II. I had heard about MKSAP and other books, but I like using the questions because they're quick, easy, and they give you immediate feedback. They help train your brain. I still have 4.5 weeks before my exam, so I still have time. Thanks for the thoughts.

Everyone learns differently. I learn best by DOING and through cases. It just sticks better for me. I learn by reasoning through problems, and then looking at the answers. In tutor mode, USMLE World worked great for me. If your learning style is similar, I think you will find USMLE World quite helpful.

The other issue is that when I try to study review books, it almost immediately renders a comatose state.🙂

Completely understand and agree with you on that one.

You are going to be sooooo stoked to be done with 3rd year (even though it is fun). There aren't too many shelf exams for us 4th year. Your job is to work hard and learn from the patients. I wish it could all be like this...

Pretty much same for me, but I really am paranoid about not having it for step 2. I have plenty of question sources for the next few rotations where I have shelf exams anyway.

Definitely looking forward to that. Still haven't taken my peds shelf. Maybe this weekend. Psych days seem to be as long as my peds days (~9-10 hrs). Maybe I'm in the unlucky psych (but the attending is actually teaching so I can't complain).

The cool thing about EM is that you can honestly tell yourself that all of the core rotations are important and that you need to learn as much as you can from each of them. . . even psych. Ergo, the 9-10 hour days on rotations that don't quite do ti for you become more tolerable.

I started this thread when I was in another state, doing another residency. Now I'm a quarter way through the first year of a new one, and this thread is still alive.

Come on, students, start posting.

just took the peds exam. I think I may have found a trick for the next exam. I'll let you know in a month if it works. (and no, it's not the shelf exam, so I can't help the rest of you)

That's what I keep saying. 3 of our padders decided they are too busy as interns to post now ( 🙂 ) and then the 4th years seem to be busy doing the whole matchitis thing. Then the 1st and 2nd years claim they are studying. What about the rest of the 3rd years? Well, I guess they are tired. Who knows...

Hey now, I'm not an intern. I'm PGY2, just so happens I am also EM1.

I, for one, have had just one little stressor after another drag me down. Too many fires to put out, trying to finish up one project and start the next. I also had a tough month at the VA, and Big Brother is always watching the Intertubes there, so I couldn't log in that much.

And then there's this medicine shelf thing that everyone's been telling me I should study for...

I never called you an intern. I was referring to h24g, sleepymed and ineedsleep. haha...I remember all the problems you had, I wouldn't put you through more.

Sorry to hear! If I can help, let me know (although I'm doubting I'm any help right now).

Working on writing a paper. Obviously you can see how well that is going.

Thanks. I usually get through the tough stuff by having enough other projects going on such that there's at least a few things going right. Recently there's just not enough things in the "win" column. Nothing to be done about but work through it. 😎

Tomorrow is study day. Funny how a "two day weekend" became a "free weekend," and how that "free weekend" starts to look a lot like a "work weekend." Stranger still is how therapeutic it is to spend two days working because you've got that much less hanging over your head. 🙄

Just woke up. Feels great, but have a headache.

Any other 4th years love Sunday night for the promise it holds? I mean, you know you won't have to do TOO much tomorrow. And who knows, maybe you'll get that magic email tomorrow, you know, the one that if you're a geek like me with gmail is tagged "ERAS" and makes your heart go pitter patter?

It's about time for h24g to come in and get the new page.
