FINALLY, a new page. Do I have to do everything people? 🙄
The one thing that has helped me on my inpatient presentations is to read extensively on your patients. With the VA's EMR this is pretty easy. When I pick up a new admission, I generally work backwards through their last few admissions and carry everything forward. The ticket is to be able to answer every question the attending will ask you about the patient.Inpatient next week I think. Presenting terrifies me. I got down the 30 second presentations this week, but not a long, drawn out presentation.
I agree, and I wish I could participate more and be an more informed voter, I just don't have the time. I generally voted Republican because they used represent my fiscal views, but Bush went away from that with creating Homeland Security and the second Iraq War. I don't believe the Dems are correct in their belief that one can fix societal problems with more programs, especially because it generally is done by taxing the most successful of us.I just think it is important that everyone is informed on the issues and everyone votes this year. Our country is in crisis!
Here's my take on Palin (finally)-
She's human - as the news spreads about her short-comings and questionable decisions, this is made obvious. Even a politician cannot control what their kids do - they will do what they want in the end. I like the fact that she decided to keep her kid knowing he would have Down's (this is a more personal matter for me). I like that she is not forcing her kid into an abortion, however, I don't know if the girl was ever given any options other than keeping the baby.
As a politician - I like that she was able to cut wasteful spending on the government side and even got rid of the personal cook and driver. That was proof she wasn't for all the extra stuff that's not needed. I also like that she took into consideration her state's economic position and did what she could to help them out - like cutting the state tax on gas.
Other than these things, I don't know much about her. More information needs to be released through a reliable source before I pass any judgment on her. I just can't trust TV stations anymore...too much gossip and not enough real talk.
Is this what you were wanting or did you want something different h24g?
Holy crap, just got owned by the Peds shelf. That was so friggin hard!!
and i see that matchitis season is in full gear... please fourth years don't forget to wear your bug spray
So, what do you do to prepare for the shelf exams? Are they written or computer-based? (Anyone can feel free to answer.)Holy crap, just got owned by the Peds shelf. That was so friggin hard!!
For the seniors reading this, remember to participate later this year with the Matchitis 2009 Survey!and i see that matchitis season is in full gear... please fourth years don't forget to wear your bug spray
And I don't take an actual shelf exam...I take some other exam online. Basically, what I hear is that it is dependent on what your school decides to have you do.
Edit: And about the studying....I study what I have the energy to study...which is almost nothing right now.
You guys should start using USMLE World questions for your rotations. Then go through the entire set of questions again while studying for Step II...twice. You will kick butt on the boards if you do that, and it is a great way to study for rotations. I wish I had known that a year ago.
Shelf exams are in old scantron/mcat/etc format. I've been using Case Files, Kaplan notes to prepare usually, with some scattered Pretest and Kaplan Qbook.
USMLE World is supposed to be excellent for shelf exams as well, but I'm saving that for Step 2.
I was going through the same thoughts as Pontifex on this one - though I've heard rave things about it, I was waiting to use USMLEWORLD for Step II. I had heard about MKSAP and other books, but I like using the questions because they're quick, easy, and they give you immediate feedback. They help train your brain. I still have 4.5 weeks before my exam, so I still have time. Thanks for the thoughts. You guys should start using USMLE World questions for your rotations. Everyone learns differently. I learn best by DOING and through cases. It just sticks better for me. I learn by reasoning through problems, and then looking at the answers. In tutor mode, USMLE World worked great for me. If your learning style is similar, I think you will find USMLE World quite helpful.
The other issue is that when I try to study review books, it almost immediately renders a comatose state.🙂
Completely understand and agree with you on that one.

You are going to be sooooo stoked to be done with 3rd year (even though it is fun). There aren't too many shelf exams for us 4th year. Your job is to work hard and learn from the patients. I wish it could all be like this...
Definitely looking forward to that. Still haven't taken my peds shelf. Maybe this weekend. Psych days seem to be as long as my peds days (~9-10 hrs). Maybe I'm in the unlucky psych (but the attending is actually teaching so I can't complain).
I started this thread when I was in another state, doing another residency. Now I'm a quarter way through the first year of a new one, and this thread is still alive.
Come on, students, start posting.
That's what I keep saying. 3 of our padders decided they are too busy as interns to post now ( 🙂 ) and then the 4th years seem to be busy doing the whole matchitis thing. Then the 1st and 2nd years claim they are studying. What about the rest of the 3rd years? Well, I guess they are tired. Who knows...
I, for one, have had just one little stressor after another drag me down. Too many fires to put out, trying to finish up one project and start the next. I also had a tough month at the VA, and Big Brother is always watching the Intertubes there, so I couldn't log in that much. That's what I keep saying. 3 of our padders decided they are too busy as interns to post now ( 🙂 ) and then the 4th years seem to be busy doing the whole matchitis thing. Hey now, I'm not an intern. I'm PGY2, just so happens I am also EM1.

And then there's this medicine shelf thing that everyone's been telling me I should study for...
/litany of woes
Thanks. I usually get through the tough stuff by having enough other projects going on such that there's at least a few things going right. Recently there's just not enough things in the "win" column. Nothing to be done about but work through it. 😎Sorry to hear! If I can help, let me know (although I'm doubting I'm any help right now).
Just woke up. Feels great, but have a headache.
I would have no experience with that whatsoever. 🙄You could be suffering through medicine.
RxnMan comes in with the steal...It's about time for h24g to come in and get the new page.
