Rejections

Not all in one day, thank some diety - I just haven't had much time to post these recently.

Sure would have liked to have UCSD or Highland. Oh well.

My interview/rejection ratio is starting to scare me. 7 + 2 courtesy/5.
Not the crazy strong candidate, but I thought I would do a little better than this (still happy with the places I have gotten). Of course, I mostly applied to competitive programs.
 
Since Friday, I've gotten 2 axes - BIDMC and Thomas Jefferson. Total of 3.

Nothing says "Good Morning" like a stiff rejection from Northwestern. (Actually it came yesterday but for some reason didn't get forwarded to my e-mail so I didn't see it till I checked my ERAS folder today). 4 and counting...

What does that mean? they put a typo in the rejection letter?

No, it's the same rejection year after year. My question is, why bother to interview anyone, then? If the numbers don't make it, but they have interviewed people in the past, and they don't make the cut, that means that the interview has little or no value. So why not just make a rank list irrespective of the interview process?
 
UCLA-Olive View today, that's 5 now.

Now the confusion begins, because I also applied to Olive View for EM/IM. The rejection e-mail specifically refers to Emergency Medicine and not EM/IM and I had received other e-mails (from a different individual) regarding my EM/IM application that specifically referred to the combined program. Do I assume that I am still in play for EM/IM? I know, I know, I should probably just call and clarify, but what can I say, I'm chicken.

It is possible they find the interview useful in differentiating among attractive candidates, but they feel even a great interview doesn't overcome poor numbers. In other words, poor numbers are sufficient, but not necessary, to end up unranked at their program.

I admit, it seems a little unecessary to put that in a rejection letter tho.

Disclaimer: I don't mean to offend anyone with the words "poor numbers" just thought "numbers that are less than competitive for that program" sounded unwieldy. Heck, I have yet to even take the USMLE . . .

Best of luck everyone, as a lowly MSI I have to admit I'm jealous.

They are just piling it on me today. C'mon UCSF-Fresno, Stanford, or USC, you're all I've got left. I just want a little West Coast love. I just wanna get out of this snowy hell I've lived in for the last 8 years.

Wait until you are in the mix. It will make less sense then.

Allegheny turns out great EM docs (many of whom I know personally), but, at the same time, there are a few (including a classmate of mine from med school) that "look good on paper", yet don't give me the "warm fuzzies" if I needed a doc. If the person's numbers mean more than the person, they're missing out on a LOT of wonderful doctors.
 
Two UCLA rejections, no Harbor EM or Olive View for me.
I hope this double reject doesn't mean no double-doubles for me! I have USC, but would like a little more CA love. UCSF-Fresno especially; but UCD would be great too.

Weird...I wonder what their cutoff numbers are. My scores and grades are far from stellar, but I got an interview there. I do have ties to the area, but I don't think "long-term boyfriend's hometown and family still lives there/has large family business" was really evident on my ERAS application. Ah well. In any case, I'm excited about the interview, even if I don't get why I got one and someone else didn't. Maybe when I'm a grown-up I'll understand the mysteries of the residency application process. Maybe. 😉

I just found out my step 2 ck score however and scored 234 up from 220 in step 1. In addition I am signed up for an additional em elective at UCLA-OV, do you guys think it's reasonable to ask for a reconsideration of my file?

Got the official boot by BIDMC today. It's alright because I was gonna reject them anyways. I already go an interview at the Boston program I was interested in. 😛

Emory was showing little love today. Ouch...really liked them too. UT Houston, whom I was scheduled to interview with on the 12th, sent the following message:

"Dear applicant,

PLEASE READ THIS E-MAIL CAREFULLY!!!!
You were invited to interview at the University of Texas at Houston
Emergency Medicine Residency Program.
Unfortunately, we have to cancel your interview. Please do not plan on
interviewing here.
I was informed by the GME office that graduation from an international
medical school in April or May of 2007 is a problem! "


Despite hard work, good grades, previous experience, a humanism award, and good USMLE stats, being an IMG sometimes, quite frankly, sucks. US grads, count your blessings. IMG's, suck it up and hope for the best.

Thus far: 5 interviews, 1 forced cancellation, and about ten rejections. Perhaps people will be in the giving spirit as Christmas approaches.

I wish you all the best of luck with your interviews...US and IMGs alike...

Holy crap, that's terrible. There are still many more invites to be handed out, you'll get some more. Good luck to you!
 
I also have eight rejections now! Getting a little freaked out. Still have heard nothing from about 15 programs...don't know what to make of it.

Am I in the 'will interview if others cancel' stack? Have they just not gone through all of their apps.

I have 8 interviews now (depending how you count courtesy invites) and eight rejections. I am wondering if I need to apply for more programs.

Ouch...two today. Uof Arizona and UC Irvine. That's 4 total. I'm really starting to believe that there is a significant increase in apps this year.
 
My first!!! No big deal because I recently decided that I wasn't going to interview there, but an invite would have helped to stroke the ego a bit. Best of luck to all.
 
I'm dismayed by how much I've been posting to this thread lately.

Oh well, both of those programs were add-ons in late October, after both programs had already sent out their first wave of invites, which may have had something to do with it.

That's 10 invites/10 rejections/12 pending for EM (plus 8/0/2 for EM/IM).
 
WTF? I got a interview invite from a place I already got rejected from a ways back. Awesome! Not really sure what it all means but I think the PD's original email reject trumps the latest residency coordinator invite. I thought it deserved a post. My preseason top 3 are set up so no worries. Rock on match season, rock on!

As for the UT-Houston IMG shaft... big time lame. Poor form. Don't sweat it, ditchdoc. I'm sure better will come. I wish you the best.
 
I recieved a snail mail letter from texas tech, no eras, or e-mail notification. At least I wasn't in a hurry for that rejection. I'm sad I won't meet BKN, it was kinda gonna be like finally meeting the wizard of oz! I'm disappointed.

I've been dreading the first TT post on this thread. Too many good people to interview them all.

I don't know about the letters, I've been sending them on paper as a sign of formality and respect; but maybe I'm too old school. What do people think?

It was last yr but my opinion is email is just fine. gets there faster and I have a nice record of all who hated me! 😀

I'd rather get the bad news quickly. However, snail mail is good if you're a sucker for punishment and like to make a "Wall of Shame". I had quite the display o' rejection letters from applying to med school; one program even felt the need to reject me 3 times in one year. I guess they thought I was so stupid I wouldn't get that rejection=rejection the first time...

Personally, I would take the letter as a sign of fomality and respect. I think that it shows a little extra class on your part. At the same time, if I'm checking elsewhere for all of my other replies, I'd feel less anxiety (why haven't I heard from TT? Is it official if it's not posted on ERAs? etc.?) if I also saw my rejection there.

Another vote for email... esp because I was off campus for a while and was dreading coming home to a mailbox full of rejection letters. It all comes down to my impatience, I would just like to know as soon as possible.

Well, I guess I would prefer e-mail just because it's faster and sometimes my husband picks up the mail and throws away all those credit cards junk mail and I just wouldn't want it to accidently get sorted wrong.

It was classy though, just wish I had chance to plead my case more. I was actually disappointed, but my interview #'s are good and I'm pretty confident I can match.

I feel better now that I know you (BKN) were heart-broken about it too!😉

I think it shows class. We take the time to fill out applications and spend money on applying to programs. Too often it feels as if someone simply pressed the send button on their computer after having pasted a rejection notice without ever reviewing my application. A letter at least has the personal touch of a signature and the feeling that you may have at least been considered...

Thanks. Although I was disappointed, and not exactly happy with the tone of the letter, I am glad that he cancelled the interview rather than allow me to spent the money and time on an interview in which I would have absolutely no chance of matching. A classmate actually interviewed at a program (not EM) and was told at the conclusion of the interview "We really like you, and would love to have you at our program, but unfortunately we cannot justify hiring an IMG."

I fact, I think I'll write him a thank you letter for being forthright. Perhaps it was not his decision to make and was simply relaying the reality of his institution. Of course...he could have been a little more gentle.
