Rocky Vista University (RVU-COM) Discussion Thread 2016-2017

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Question, so my portal now says prospective student along with my tab that says applicant. Yesterday there was only the applicant tab that told me my file was complete. Does anyone know what this means or has it happened to anyone else?

Perhaps they are going to be reviewing your file next. I know I went from applicant, prospective student, interview

Throughout the process you'll see the tabs appear and disappear.

How competitive do you have to be to be considered from out of state? They are definitely a "check your own status" school. I have a 3.7 cgpa, 3.59 sgpa, 512 MCAT.

You're fine.

I have an AM interview this week on 9/9 at RVUCOM-SU...many others at that time? I would be so excited if I get in here. Just don't want to get my hopes too high since I'd be so down if I don't get in.

I interview the 27th. Would appreciate it if you posted about your experience.

I drove by the school over the weekend when I was down there... Still pretty early in the construction process. Do you know where they are interviewing? I didn't see anything in my email. Maybe I will have to check the website.

Rejected at CO campus. This was one of my favorite programs. Good luck everyone!

Sorry to hear that! When did you apply? Crossing my fingers every day for some good news at this school but haven't heard anything yet.

Complete 07/28. They made a mistake with my application which delayed its review.

In the portal they will have location interview info for the Utah campus once you pick a date. Did the building(construction site) look big? Just curious

Cancelled my interview at RVU-Utah good luck everyone

Just withdrew my application here. Hope my spot goes to someone else and good luck everyone!

Ugh mine just switched over to this too and I think I'm about to have a panic attack waiting to see what it says next. Did this happen to anyone who was rejected post-secondary?

Really? I was complete like 8/03 and still says "FILEC"

Haha it's funny you ask, I was rejected this morning pre-II. Stupid sGPA..... I really hoped my MCAT would make up for it.

My bad, should have been more specific. I've been complete since 8/1 and now this afternoon I looked and saw I had an extra tab that said "Prospective Student - CO" but now that tab is gone and mine still says "File Complete" like nothing ever happened 🙁

I was invited to Utah campus. I was complete at Utah on 8/12. I have been complete at Colorado since 8/8 and have not heard anything yet.

The way that this system works is completely mind boggling. I was complete early July and I've been heard crickets since secondary email. I did have a July 22 MCAT tho.

complete ~8/17. Seems like theres about a month turnaround time so I hope I hear (good news) from them soon!

We were doing Dermatological Examinations on each other today, and in walk in a bunch of suits. It was a bit disconcerting until we realized that you were all interviewees, then we relaxed and turned on our happy faces... while most of us had our shirts off.

None of the essays have word limits, so I have no clue how long to make these things. 250 words? 500 words? 1000 words?

I know people say write until you say everything you want to say, but I could write a novel on why I want to be a doctor or what unique skills i have, I usually mold my answer to the required length.

How long is pretty good?

I think I had around 750 words. Definitely say enough so they can get to know you and decide if they want to interview you, but still be concise and not ramble.

Ah, that's a 180 than what I was imagining happened during an interview lol.

Got screened out pre-secondary.. Pretty surprised. 3.3+sGPA and 3.4+ cGPA. MCAT 510+.

Woah woah woah. You didn't get a secondary? Are you sure you sent in your MCAT to AACOMAS? I had this problem last year and was rejected pre-secondary.

You're right. I emailed them asking what their screening process is. They responded right away about the MCAT. I guess I missed that when doing my app.

Good! Same thing happened to me and after I got that rejection I said "screw this place, I don't wanna go there anyways". On a whim I asked why I wasn't good enough and it turned out that I was the one that didn't submit correctly. Funny enough I ended up loving the school at the interview and cancelling my other interviews afterwards.

For the essay on the unique characteristics/skills/abilities I bring to RVU, do you guys think it would be a bad idea to focus the entire essay on just one unique personal characteristic and not any skills or abilities?

I feel like I can speak very well and with much substance on one personal trait of mine that many others may not posses, but I don't really feel I have any particular skills that are both vastly unique and relevant to medicine that they would be relevant to med school admissions. I doubt the adcoms are interested in my typing speed, or how much practice I put into playing soccer.

You play soccer? Sounds like you personally understand the stresses and potential injury mechanisms that soccer players are prone to. You walk the line between understanding the injury and the need to take time to heal it while simultaneously understanding the athlete's desire to return to their favorite sport as quickly as possible. The ability to empathize with athletes in such a way is a great ability. Even though you're leaving your choice of preferred specialty wide open, your ability to empathize with athletes especially is one of your strongest skills that have focused your interests into sports medicine.

I have no idea if sports medicine is your calling. My point is that a skill does not have to be a physical task. Knowledge is skill too. It's better to answer the questions in the essay to the best of your ability - without leaving parts out as that makes you look incomplete.

I just wrote the best essay of any of my applications for the question about unique personal characteristics. The only problem is that the essay is just under 1200 words. I went through it and I really don't want to remove any of it because it is so well written and really captures me well.

Does anyone see this as being problematic? I know it is lengthy but there is no maximum length for any of the essays. My other two are about 500 words.

Is it fine if I leave it as is?

II! Just now. There were a few dates available. starting from 9/28 to 11/10. I'm going 9/28! Wish me luck!

I'm guessing your talking about Colorado? If you are talking about Utah then I would see you there!

The 10th was the only date available in November when I got my II.

You're also going to Colorado, where the dates I mentioned are for Utah, so that may also explain the differences.
