Anyone else deciding on applying to Ross now after not getting into a state school?

Funny you should post this.
I just clicked submit today and all my LORs, transcripts and GRE scores are in transit. I am waitlisted at two schools-I'm looking at this as plan B.

I have already submitted and as soon as one of my pre-reqs is complete I have an interview in May. So excited!!! I have interviewed several alumni and they have had nothing but postive things to say about the program and their experiences.

:luck::luck::luck::xf:

I submitted my application yesterday, too!

I work for a Ross grad and a friend I went to undergrad with goes there and loves it as well.

Now I get to do the nervous waiting game all over again!

i have worked with veterinarians and interns from Ross and they were fantastic! we also have students from Ross who come to Auburn to do their clinical rotations 4th year. Ross seems to have a great program!

good luck to you all!!!

For current RUSVM student's, how was the transition from the states to St. Kitts? Would living on campus be better than off campus for the first year? Which airline would be recommended (American Airlines and Delta are the only ones I know of at the moment)? I know there are airlines w/ transfers (either in US or in Puerto Rico), but which option is less expensive?

I did the same thing, after not getting into any stateside schools I applied to Ross in late February. Originally I was applying for Sept. but the school has told me May is still open and if accepted I can start in May.
I am interviewing monday.

That'd be crazy/awesome if you start vet school in 3 weeks! Good luck! How long did it take for your file to be complete? And how long did it take them to contact you for an interview? I'm still waiting on one LOR to be received...it's been 2 wks.

Not a current student of Ross, but i do know that you have to live on campus your first semester and then move off after that

and p.s. that is a very cute pig 🙂

I know I am trying to get ready even though I am still not accepted.
It took over a month for my file to be complete because of my LOR's
not sending it in right away. Once my status on their tracking page said "interview stage" then I was contacted 4 days later to set up an interview.
They would not have granted me an interview so soon if I had not said I was willing to start in May.
So are you applying for September? I have had to get people to watch my dogs at the last minute. Which is very stressful for me because I don't like asking for help. I am going to have them down there with me but due to having to get 2 rabies titers, the 2nd one won't be ready in time.

Yea I'm applying for September. Also where is your interview going to be held?

Well the crazy thing about that is because it is so last minute they are conducting a phone interview with me and that is it. They said if I want to instead apply for September then I will have to fly to San Francisco to interview.

They don't review your file until they have everything (SGU will start and even grant an interview with something missing-usually a LOR). My file has said interview for a few weeks now but I haven't officially heard anything yet. My understanding is that you interview with the person for your section of the country (http://www.rossu.edu/contact/territory.cfm). you can request to interview with someone closer if it works out better that way though (i'm a MD resident at school in VA. technically i should be going through the NJ office but instead i'm with the NC office because its a lot closer)

@anjabryn- How'd your interview go?? What'd they ask you?

Aaaahhh, I don't know how it went. I feel it went okay but I don't know if I went into enough detail.
It lasted about an hour.
THey asked me Why I choose to pursue a DVM?
How my GRE scores jumped so high (my first attempt was really low and my second was a lot higher).
What about the Veterinary career do I like and dislike.
Have I had a Veterinary mentor
How do I handle stress
Do I consider myself a leader or a follower and to give examples
How am I prepared to live on the island
Is there anything that scares me about moving to St. Kitts

That is all I can think of right now, they said if I don't hear from them in 1 week then I MAY be considered for September.
Everything is up in the air right now but I feel excited!

Ahh I know the feeling. I always second guess my answers AFTER my opportunity to sell myself. :bang: Keeping my fingers crossed for ya!:xf::xf: And thanks for all the insight!!

Good Luck! I will be down there in Sept. I was accepted into the Vet Prep program, but I am really hoping after they get my transcript from this semester they will put me into the vet class! I currently have an A in O Chem and with only 2 1/2 weeks left it should stay that way! I also have an "A" in bio 2...CSU didn't require I take it. Let just say the lowest grade I have gotten this semester is a 99%.:laugh::laugh: I feel like I am in elementary school. People manage to fail these test and I really think I would have to not study and take the test drunk to even get an F.

I wish I didn't have to be in St. Kitts an extra 3 months, but its worth it to be a vet.👍 My undergrad GPA is not example of my true intelligence or ability as a student, but I do understand the admissions committee's concerns as its REALLY BAD! 😉

Congrats on the acceptance! Do you know who the VetPrep program is recommended/required for?

Hey there, I was accepted into the September class of 2011 as well. I actually applied to Ross the same time that I applied to the rest of the state schools, so it was nice that as I was going through all the nerves of waiting for interviews, Ross was the first interview invitation AND the first/only acceptance. I'm stuck on one waitlist but am 99% sure I will end up on the beautiful island of St. Kitts =)

Good luck to everyone!!

I was also accepted into the September 2011 class. The application process when quite fast for me. I submitted my apps and within 3-4 weeks was asked for an interview. Waited 4 weeks and received an email that I was accepted.

There are 3 Ross alum's at the clinic i'm working at, and they all said it was a great experience. Good luck to you Anjabryn and CACoco! You guys will be fine =)

jmo1012: thanks for answering! I figured that students had to stay on campus their first semester when I spoke w/ my vets. Thanks for Mr. Choco's compliment!

I'm just waiting for my transcripts to be processed by the New Jersey office. The portal says they have everything else.

I'm really hoping this goes fast, I want to go in September!

Congrats on the acceptance! Do you know who the VetPrep program is recommended/required for?

The Admissions committee accepts 17 students per semester that they feel could be good vets, but they want to make sure they can handle the upper level course work of vet school. The VetPrep is one semester and as long as you pass all of the classes you start vet school the next semester.

I am excited to be accepted into it especially now that Ross is AVMA accredited. Its my fastest shot at going to vet school. I could continue retaking some of my lower pre-reqs and hope to get in here, but there is no guarantee. Vetprep is 3 months with a grantee at the end as long as you pass the classes. 🙂

I’m so unsure of my next move. I filled out my Ross app but haven’t submitted. Spent so much time and $$$ working towards this to only get rejected for the 3X at my instate school. I’m a nontraditional with two UG degrees. My first was a struggle and not related to vet med my second was in biology with minor in physics and chem, 3.6 but my GRE is a bit low but I’ve done everything to up it and I did but it’s still on the lower of the accepted range pretty certain it’s not going up anymore.
My instate interview this year I thought went well but there was a lot of focused on my first degree and the fact that I don’t have a masters. All of that info to say I can’t decide. It seems silly to pursue a master on the off chance that it would be what they are looking for and spend the $$$. My instate is one hour from my home. I can’t believe I’m considering island life but at least my $$$ would go towards actually become a Vet as opposed to trying yet another angle to get into my instate…
It doesn’t help that I own a small farm, have LOTS of animals, and love my farm… Guess this is more of a rant, sorry. Oh I did talk to some friends that live in Puerto Rico they recommended SGU over Ross but that was more from an island living perspective then a vet school perspective. Any thoughts on that?
:scared:

DrKsomeday, I would strongly recommend calling up Jeffery Bates at SGU and your "local" state rep for Ross and talking to them about yourself and what they look for. The admissions people are some of the nicest and most encouraging people you'll ever talk to about vet school.
I'm Ross has something similar, but SGU also has an alumni hotline if you want to talk to students/graduates about what their experiences are like.
In terms of cost, SGU is supposed to be about $30,000 cheaper-idk if that actually proves to be true. That covers cost of school and all living expenses.
You might find SGU more attractive if you want to be able to come back to the states for periods of time because they do 2 semesters a year rather than year round 3 semesters.
For application costs, applying to both schools (each) cost less than $100 and that was for 2 transcripts, GRE scores, LORs, and the application fee. The applications are also substantially less time consuming (IMO) than the VMCAS.

I'm a recent graduate from SGU. I graduated almost 2 yrs ago and pursued internship and a subsequent career in private practice. To give you some background on my situation I graduated from a large instate university with a 3.4 GPA and an average GRE score. I had moderate experience in the veterinary field prior to applying and worked at my in-state veterinary school in the research department. I knew that a 3.4 GPA and avg. GRE scores would not be enough for acceptance. I met an SGU grad. who spoke positively about their experience at SGU. I did my research and looked into both Ross and St. George's. I subseqeuntly chose SGU over Ross for the following reasons:
1.) Cost. as "jmo" stated Ross is $30,000 more expensive
2.) safety. St. Kitts, where Ross is located, has a much higher crime rate than SGU (Grenada). I advise you to google search recent crime at Ross. Although petty theft (breaking into cars etc.) did happen in Grenada, there were no violent crimes committed against students during my time as a student.
3.) Break time. I enjoyed having summer (3mo.) and winter (1mo.) breaks to recharge, visit family and friends. I would have missed out on a number of events if this was no available (weddings etc).
4.) larger student population. Although I didnt realize it when I was looking into both schools, I found out that there was a medical school on our campus as well which made our student population larger. There were more students to interact with and I felt as though I was attending a US university.
5.) Our campus was georgeous especially in comparison to Ross.

All this being said, I have worked with and I am currently friends with many Ross graduates. They are great doctors as well. These were just my reasons for choosing SGU over Ross.
In addition, SGU has Federal funded US loans and is having their last site visit from the AVMA 4/11 and if all goes well we should be considered AVMA accredited by the end of this year. I loved my time at SGU and although getting into a US veterinary school is most pre-veterinary students ultimate goal, SGU in my opinion is the second best option. Although I would have loved to go to my instate veterinary university, i'm thankful for how things worked out for me and im glad that sometimes I dont get everything I ask for. 🙂
Best of luck to you and whatever you choose to do.

congrats to all who have been accepted! =) I'm starting this May so I will see you guys all in Sept.

Jmo1012 – Thank you 🙂 I’d give you a hug if I could. This is just freaking frustrating. Hardest thing for me is getting past the $ factor, not for the application for the out-state (country) tuition. I’d like to do rural vet med and shelter medicine so I don’t foresee myself recouping my investment fast unless I can get into one of the programs that helps with loan repayment. The other factor is relocating… seriously I drive myself nuts with this stuff. Regardless thank you I really should call someone and get their perspective and push send on my apps!

Hi!!

Did any of you interview for Ross in Miami?!

Thank you!

How did it go?!?! Hope it went well!

My interviewer is Jon Bolaski.

Did he also interview you? I'm really nervious!

Thank you!

Yes, he did. It went awesome! He is very nice! Very relaxed interview more conversational than being grilled with questions, but there were some questions. I took my resume just in case, but he never asked for it although I told him about most of my recent jobs due to the fact they have all been related to animal experience etc... Make sure you are appropriately dressed and arrive on time. I got there about 15 mins early because I wanted to give myself plenty of time since I am not familiar with Miami. Just relax and be yourself is my best advice. 😀

I interviewed with Dr. Bolaski as well at the Miami office. He really was awesome. Basically asked why do you want to be a veterinarian and why do you want to go to Ross. He was interested in how you would do living in st kitts. Overall, it was my favorite interview. All the other questions were just specific to me and wasn't trying to ask you someting just to trip you up. Basically, felt like I was having an hour long conversation with a friend. Really have no reason to be nervous for this interview.

Thank you so much jlm179 and seansie!!!

I've notice that people applying to Ross are really nice!... Makes it so much more comforting!! :woot:

Hi,
I was wondering how long it took you guys to hear back after an interview... on wed it will be 4 weeks since my interview and I'm getting a little anxious. I hate playing the waiting game lol!

I was wondering the same thing and mine has only been a week.

It took me a little over 4 weeks, but one of my LOR didn't send in all the contact info until after my interview, so I think that delayed it.

Hi Everyone! I'm in the same boat, my interview for the Sept class was almost 3 weeks ago. She told me it would be 2-6 I'm glued to my phone hoping it's sooner!:luck:

I interviewed on December 17th of last year and I received a call On January 9th offering me a seat in the September class. Ultimately, I declined the seat for my instate but was really bummed about it. Ross seems great and its AVMA now...

Mine was 5 weeks exactly.. The person who interviewed me sent me an e-mail stating that the adcom had made their decision and to congratulate me of my acceptance, the following day I got an e-mail from the asst director of admin, and the next day I got my welcome packet which was fedex expressed! Don't worry, you'll hear from them within a couple days! Good luck! :xf:

Erin Healey said she personally calls all applicants to let them know what the adcoms have decided as an fyi-sounds like not all of the admissions offices do this though

Hi everyone!! I've been accepted to Ross in the September class, woohoo!! I'm so glad this thread has been started, i've been eager to meet other Ross students starting in September! I had applied 4 times to schools in the continental U.S. with no luck (and I'm currently on the waitlist for MSU but have been told it's "unlikely" i will be called). My sister actually goes to the Ross med school, and she really likes it there, so I decided to apply and got accepted!

I would love to meet someone else who's going to Ross in September - any Michiganders here?? Or northern Ohio-ers?

I interviewed with Erica Wasserman in Columbus, Ohio, and that's exactly the way I felt too. It was just like having a conversation. She was super nice. I did do some mock interviews with my manager at work beforehand, and I definitely felt like there wasn't any question that threw me off.

I got called almost exactly a week after my interview, but my interviewer said that my interview date just happened to fall right before their "cycle" of when they review applicants. I interviewed on Jan 13th I believe, and they called me that next week.

To those of you who have paid your deposit already, did you hear anything from them after you did?

I paid my deposit a few days after my letter and haven't heard anything at all.

I put in $500, will put in another $500 before May 1. I have a lot of e-mails coming from Isha Webster, such as the area code and cell phone number and all that.

ImNotThatGirl, you're lucky! Beats waiting for 5-6 weeks! I'll see you in September!! :highfive:

Oh really? I've only gotten 1 email from Isha, and it was to let me know that they are working to get their May class settle first, and I should hear from them again regarding housing towards the end of april/beginning of may. My coordinator (Bill Bingham) said pretty much the same thing.
