Hello Snd peeps!

This is my first time starting a forum, so forgive any protocol breeches!

I was lucky enough to get accepted to a couple of medical schools this cycle, but in the end my decision appears to come down to Rush or NYU (unless I magically get into Columbia off the wait list!)

I know that these are dramatically different schools with different focuses and reputations, but I am currently in a situation where location is playing a big factor in my choice.

A bit about me, I did a ton of research in undergrad and was never extraordinarily excited about it (benchwork and clinical). I plan on doing Internal Medicine with the possibility going into GI. Prestige is not super important to me, as I intend to pursue some type of career in primary care.

Now for the tricky bit! I'm getting married in June to a delightful individual who is pretty much willing to follow me anywhere. However, he was recently offered his absolute dream job in Chicago. He was admitted to a professional grad program at NYU and Columbia, so if we went to NYC he wouldn't be twiddling his thumbs.

I am trying to consider quality of life quite a bit when making this decision. I want to bit a school and a city that will lead to a happy four years, but I also don't want to limit myself.

I adored my interview at Rush and though the students seemed happy and very well balanced. The students at NYU and Columbia were also fantastic and the facilities were amazing.

Any advice would be super duper helpful! Thanks!

Congrats on your acceptances! I'm tagging a couple of mods because your thread should be moved to the more current school specific discussions.

Oh, and I think you'll have more opportunities if you attend NYU or Columbia.

First off, congratulations! You have been accepted to two fantastic medical schools. Your acceptances reflect the hard work you've done up to this point - and they foreshadow the work you're likely to do while in medical school, as well.

I would like to make a point that is oftentimes lost in these SDN threads.

Yes, NYU has a fancier name than Rush. I will not debate that point. You may impress laypersons for many years to come with an NYU degree. However, I think it is important to keep in mind that in medicine, moreso than in other professional fields, where you attend for graduate studies matters less than the quality of work you perform (i.e. The playing field is quite level).

Rush Medical College is fantastic, and it will in no way limit your opportunities in comparison to NYU. According to their 2014 Match List, there were medical students from Rush who match at Harvard-affiliated hospitals, in addition to hospitals associated with Duke, Emory, Johns Hopkins, Northwestern, UChicago, UCLA -- top programs in every corner of the country.

As my mentor (a former professor at HMS) recently reiterated to me: "Go wherever will make you happiest and kick ass. It doesn't matter where - not until residency."

Just my two cents. I wish you the best with your decision - you can't go wrong!
