its not too late, but i definitely dont think it matters which term you apply for, which ever works best for you!

So what are the 3 questions that you can pick for your essay?

You can look those up in the "interview questions" part of SDN... I don't think the vet school is listed but just click on the medical school one and apply the questions to vet medicine.
The essay options were like:
1) Name 3 characteristics about yourself that you feel will prepare you for a career in veterinary medicine.
2) Who is your role model and why?
... There was a 3rd but I don't remember what it was. I thought #1 was easiest.

So what are the 3 questions that you can pick for your essay?
"Name and describe the most influential/inspirational person in your life",

"Describe 3 characteristics that you possess that will contribute to your success as a veterinary student and veterinarian"

"Describe a significant event in your life that you consider life altering"

I picked the one that asks you to describe 3 characteristics about yourself. I had the 3 characteristics picked out the day before my interview, but I didn't do a practice essay at home. I didn't want it to sound too rehearsed.

I didn't feel like my interview was based mostly off the essay. I heard it's basically to see if you can write something coherent on the spot, and to back up what you may have discussed in your application. But the questions were mostly "how did you find out about the island?" "How will you deal living away from family in friends while living in a 3rd world country?"

They say 67% of those who get an interview are accepted into the program.

Good luck!

You could go ahead and submit your online application, then mail in your fee and other info on Monday (I submitted my online application Janurary 6th, then mailed in the rest of the stuff January 10th). It's definitely not too late to apply for August term, but I would definitely suggest doing it ASAP if you want to start in August. Applying early will increase your odds of getting in before the competition rises in the summer.

Is anyone else currently taking required classes for entrance into year 3? (For example I'm taking organic 2 and physics right now). I'm just wondering if you get your acceptance before you complete those classes, the email I got said you will hear a final decision after you final transcript is sent. Or do they send you a preliminary acceptance?
Does anyone know if there's a Facebook group or anything so that one might find a potential roommate? I like the idea of knowing who I'm living with 🙂

Still waiting to hear back but, it hasn't been a full two weeks yet. Crossing my fingers to hear back soon so I can get over the wait. And, just checked, my status finally says Complete for Final Review :scared: haha.

Is it an email you receive when accepted?

I will be going into the last semester of the Pre-Veterinary Foundation and starting Veterinary classes in January. So I may be a potential roommate. I think jemappellejane is too.

I wonder if I can are any summer classes to bolster me up to last semester of prevet. I haven't taken genetics of biochem yet but I wonder if I can take those this summer and be bolstered into the last semester. How far have you gotten into your sciences drwildlife?

I will actually be completing my Bachelor's of Science in Biology this semester so I am almost completely done. Finishing up Biochemistry and some of my major requirements. My grades suffered a bit in some classes so I am taking a semester of Veterinary Foundation to "prove myself" so to speak.

Thanks jmo! Drwildlife do you have an email or Facebook so we can keep in touch? Not trying to be creepy 🙂 just honestly terrified of not knowing anyone in Grenada and it'd be nice to have a friend 🙂 Ill PM you my contact info!

There is a facebook group for accepted students. Krista will send you a link once you're accepted. The group is SO helpful. It's nice to talk to your fellow classmates and even better to hear all about the island from upperclassmen. There's a lot to consider when moving to the Carribean. I can't wait to go!

Yup, I'm being considered for the last semester foundation too. Although, I'm taking a bunch of science courses this semester in hopes of being considered for a DVM start in August. :crossedfingers:

i've heard nothing but good things about the foundations program from previous vet students. they all say they found it very helpful and preparative for the first semester of the vet program fwiw 🙂

Are you still waiting to hear back too, girl?

Yes! My interviewer didn't follow up with admissions right away apparently so I have to wait another 3ish weeks!

Ahhh! I think that's what happened to me. It's been 2 weeks yesterday. I spoke to an admissions counselor who was at the Pre-Veterinary Symposium and he told me not to worry...but that it could be anywhere from 3-6 weeks 🙁

I know its rough waiting... As my friend kept telling me its almost there!

I didn't get a link to the FB group 🙁 do you have to wait until you've sent in our deposit to get it? (btw only delay is my lack of stamps 😛)

Here is the link to the facebook group. I don't know if I'm supposed to make this public or not but I suppose it doesnt hurt. Its for students who have been ACCEPTED into the August 2012 term. I first received the link from the president of SGU shortly after my acceptance. Krista sent it to me again after sending me a confirmation that she had received my deposit.

does anyone know if the personal statement suppose to be 1500 words or is that just the maximum. i feel that my 600 words is enough and if i add to it then the quality of it would go down.

Just got in!!!! Vet foundation semester, then jan 2013 DVM start!!! Sorry, on my phone and in a hurry!

drwildlife, Ive been keeping up with you and this post for a while now, and I'm pretty anxious for you too for some reason hahaha. GOOD LUCK!

I guess my anxiety is just radiating off of me, haha. Some of my friends have started getting their grad school acceptances and I'm just like dang it! I wanna have an acceptance too! You guys will be one of the first groups to know when I find out.

Is it an email they send out? or a phone call?

Sweet.

Krista is probably getting tired of me haha. Big things keep happening and I keep updating her. I guess I should have mentioned it to you guys too but...my tiger vocalization recordings (I work with tigers..) are currently being used in India to help lure a rouge tiger to safety. How sweet is that?

They send an email...hopefully you will hear very soon!

And congrats jemappellejane!

I didn't know about the extra foundation thing until the interview...its something I would have considered if offered to me but I am ready to get started right away.

I'm the nerd that misses school 😛

I pressed submit on March 5! I am just waiting for one of my LORs to get mailed. I mailed everything else, but status on website still says they haven't received anything. More research I am doing on SGU vet school, the more I believe it is the school for me and that everything happens for a reason. I didn't get accepted to UGA vet school in Athens, GA and I am so anxious about SGU. I wonder how long it will be until I know about an interview. Do you think the day I pressed submit was too late for the entering August 2012 class?

Dr Wildlife, you will know soon, I promise. And, btw, I'm sure Krista is EQUALLY as annoyed with me, if not more. No worries. You got this!!!!

I have a friend who is also applying for the August 2012 class. She finished her essays and submitted her application yesterday. When she emailed SGU about it, they told her that only half of the August 2012 class has officially been accepted so there is still definitely a chance. I also think there is a possibility in which they could deny you into the August class but accept you into the January class, if you choose to take it. Not too sure about that. What I am sure about is that its definitely not too late. Good luck to you!

That tiger stuff sounds pretty awesome. The most impressive thing I've done was rehabilitate penguins in South Africa for 2 months and I got in... So if you don't get in, I'll be stunned.

you're definitely not too late for august, there are students here that found out only weeks before the start of the term! (both aug and jan!)

my timeline last year was submit-->3 weeks-->interview notification-->8weeks(total)-->interview-->10 weeks-->acceptance 🙂 and i submitted at the very end of Feb last year (geez i can't believe almost 1 year through all of this already, where does the time go?!? [answer to my rhetorical question-->studying:meanie:])

Got put on the waiting list until they see my final grades...

That's fine!!! Just rock it!!! Is this for the prevet start or DVM start?

I don't know. They didn't say. But, it's got me really scared now because one of those grades is going to be Biochemistry...

All the more reason to step it up for your last semester! Don't be discouraged. Just study hard and you're in!

ahh! thank you! That does make me feel better. I am so ready to start a new chapter in my life and begin my path towards becoming a veterinarian. I am hoping that I have a pretty good chance of getting in..just trying to stay optimistic after all the hard work I have put into future vet school but no matter what getting denied...especially when my in state school doesn't do interviews! What is it like in Grenada!? I want to know EVERYTHING! I have never traveled and really want to take advantage of this awesome opportunity I am presented with. Just keeping my fingers crossed. How is it there if you have pets? My two boys (my dogs) have to go with me. Just no way for me to leave them behind; don't have the heart for it...

Thank you, and good luck to your friend! Hopefully there will be a spot for the two of us! I'm anxious to know (as we all are after all the hard work WE ALL put in). I hope to hear something within the next couple of weeks. I will keep you all posted. Time is going by much slower now that I pressed submit.

I've talked a lot with current students at SGU and apparently you're required to live on campus the first semester unless you bring a pet. It's dangerous in the hot summer to fly your pets under the plane. Most students have their vets designate their pets as service animals so they can fly their pets with them. However, during the months in which all the students are going to school, flying with your pets is a hassle because airlines only allow like 7 dogs per flight for the whole plane. You'll need to get in contact with SGU and tell them your bringing a pet because I think they need to send you some paperwork for the customs people. Also, customs will tax you on your dog. Apparently if you say it's a shelter mutt, regardless of its actual bloodline, it'll be much cheaper on the taxes and they don't know the difference. And once you're on the island, make sure your dogs are vaccinated for the various diseases that mosquitos, fleas, and ticks carry because the island is full of them.

Sorry if this has been mentioned before but, what visas are required to attend St. Georges? When I was waitlisted, I started thinking about the limited amount of time I would have to get ready to travel there. Just unsure if I need to start planning more so.

I'm really excited I'm still in the running. And I am going to give it my all this semester.

Once your're accepted, you'll receive a letter from SGU that you just bring with you and give to the customs people. Theyll know you are a student and youll be granted a student visa. You'll have plenty of time to prepare all your things. The SGU website has a list of items they recommend bringing if possible. Most try to take as much as they can in their checked baggage, without going over the weight limit. The rest can be shipped to Grenada. A lot of students use Amerijet to buy "barrels" to fill up and ship to the island.

Thanks everyone! I work in International Programs at my university so I'm constantly having to deal with issues like that. Makes me be extra careful 😀

Your vet cannot designate your dog a service animal you have to have a letter from you MD stating that you need a service animal and service animals are not included in the 7 animal allowed on the plane....my flight to grenada this term had at least 1 dog per ever row if not 2. I would guess that there was 50 dogs on the flight. I have my dog with me and it is great and not to much trouble to get her down here...If you have any questions about how to get them here and life with a dog on the island let me know.
