Congratulations!!! Would you know when was the application timestamped?
Hellooo! I submitted OTCAS in September, mailed my packet on 10/5, and I believe was timestamped on 10/10.

Have the people that have been accepted already send in their unofficial transcripts to the department and resend their official transcripts to GAPE? I'm confused about this part because I thought we already sent official transcripts to GAPE when we applied.

To be honest, I am not sure. I was under the impression that we only have to send the unofficial transcripts/official transcripts of the classes you've finished after receiving your conditional acceptance :)

Hi, I was wondering if you could tell us about the difficulty of the program? I'm used to quarter system but looking at the roadmap it looks like we'll be taking quite a few more units.

Also, did you end up taking neuroanatomy at UCLA extension?

Thank you!

Overall, I think the program is manageable. Lots of reading, writing and projects, but totally doable if you manage time well and don't procrastinate. It is challenging, but I love how supportive the professors are and you can truly feel that they want you to succeed. That really took a lot of stress off of me during the semester, cause they were really helpful and want you to learn rather than worry about your grade. Not to mention, my cohort has been so amazing and I feel like we all support each other and it was great to not have that competitiveness that was in undergrad. So overall, the great and supportive individuals really help you succeed, even during difficult times. Despite it being online for the first semester, it really didn't feel like I missed out on much, since the professors try really hard to make it as interactive as possible. Plus for the first semester, since it is mostly theory, you don't really need to be in person.

Oh man, I totally know how you feel...I had quarter system as well in undergrad and I have to say shifting to the semester system was kinda weird. Workload wise I feel was the same as when I was on the quarter system. Each semester you take 5 classes for 3 units each so 15 units. I probably sound ungrateful saying this, but I feel like Winter Break is so long! Haha good to have time to recharge as well.

I did take neuroanatomy at UCLA! I honestly felt it was a relatively easy and pain free option. So that is a good one to take!

Hi there! Thank you again for being open to answering our questions :)I would really appreciate if you could share you experience regarding:
1. What is the schedule like for the first year? Do you attend classes all 5 days?
2. How many hours of work do you think one must expect to put in excluding all the classes?
3. What are the summer breaks like? Do most students end up doing an internship at the time of the break?

Thank you again for taking time to help us!
Thankful!

Sure thing! Congrats on getting accepted and hope to see you next year!

1) So I just finished Fall semester and it was not that bad. Lots of projects and it is mostly theory based. Definitely doable online if we still have to do distant learning come next year. For the most part, my schedule is usually just Monday-Thursday and have yet to have a Friday class. Typically the time slots are 9:00 AM-11:45 AM, 1:30- 4:15 PM, and the rare occasion 5:00-7:50 PM (it was for our fieldwork I). Some classes did take the whole time and for others we get to leave early.
2) There is A LOT of reading and projects and I believe they said that on average it will take 30-40 hrs outside of class if I remember correctly. So it helps to not procrastinate, but totally doable. It is definitely more challenging remotely as group projects over zoom was harder to arrange.
3) For the first summer break, originally we were suppose to have an international experience, where we travel to another country (Finland, Taiwan, or Vietnam) and learn how OT system is like in their country. But with the COVID situation, we are not able to do it this year, hopefully you will be able to. For the second summer break, I believe we start our part 1 of the hands on fieldwork and in Fall we do part 2 and graduate officially in December.

Feel free to let me know if you have any more questions!

Hi everyone! So I am an out of state applicant and I am a little confused about how the tuition works. I know on the website it says that graduate tuition for 6.1 units or more is $4,643. Is that per semester, per year, is it different for the OT program? And then it says out of state students pay $396 per unit in addition to that $4,643. The OT program is 72 units. So we just add all that up to get a total? Does that sound right? Any guidance would be awesome! Thanks! :)

Good question! I think the $4,643 number is per semester term when you take a full-time course load of 6.1+ units or more.

Yes! That is correct each semester is $4,643 for this 2020-2021 year, I'm sure there will be a tad increase for next school year, but won't vary much I'm sure. We pay for each semester. Since I'm an in-state student, not so sure about the extra $396, but that sounds about right. You pay an extra $396 per each unit. So each semester so far has been around 15 units.

Hi @cbs93,
I recently graduated from SJSU's OT program. Out of state students were able to apply for CA residency after 1 year and pay in-state tuition the last 2 academic semesters and level 2 fieldwork. If FLP (faculty led program international experience) is being offered (summer between 1st and 2nd year), there would be additional cost for that.

Same here, time stamped 10/28. I'm wondering if they are stomped with tons of applications because they waived the GRE prereq scores to apply.

I would say stay hopeful! My time stamp was 11/4 and last year I didn't get my acceptance notice until Mid-March. Best of luck!

Hi everyone, I was conditionally accepted early Dec and got a confirmation email from Dr. Smith after I sent an email to confirm my seat. She said emails would be sent out sometime this semester with additional updates. Just wanted to make sure I haven’t missed anything? I haven’t heard anything about a deposit which I thought was strange? I will have to take neuroanatomy this summer too

There is no deposit, as long as you replied that is all you need to do. :)

Hi friends! For those that are conditionally accepted, has anyone heard back from GAPE?

Also, did everyone get a confirmation email from Dr. Smith after accepting your seat? Lol, just worried since I didn't hear back after and not sure if my email was received. Ty :)

After I accepted my seat, Dr. Smith replied saying to keep an eye out for the paper letter and for more emails over the next several months. I got my letter but haven’t received any further email communications yet. Hope this helps!

Hey everyone! I was wondering if anyone has heard anything about SJSU implementing a OTD program in the future. If so, I hope they keep the entry level master's in addition to the OTD. I heard that CSUDH is doing something similar. I know it won't make a difference for those entering this year, but regardless it seems like something that would be mentioned if there were plans to move in that direction.

I received my conditional acceptance last night! My application was time stamped October 1st so I thought surely I didn’t make the cut since others were receiving acceptances with later time stamps. Don’t lose hope guys!

OMG congrats!!! Woohoo! May I ask what you're stats are, please? :) I'm still waiting to hear back and I was timestamped later in Oct. I was losing hope thinking that they had already gone over my app by now since some were hearing back and they was time-stamped around mid-Oct. But glad to know you were time-stamped early and just got notified recently. Hoping I have a chance!

Hi Everyone! First time chiming in here, but I’ve been following these posts for a few years. I just want to say don’t get too hung up on the numbers because SJSU does look at each individual as a whole. I don’t necessarily find it beneficial to compare someone’s stats to your own because everyone will come together with different experiences, and that's what makes a well-rounded program.

With that being said, I’m a perfect example of them choosing applicants holistically. I was timestamped Oct 8, but was notified of my acceptance on Tuesday night (Feb 9). It’s been a long journey for me, and these posts gave me peace of mind in the application process (most of the time!). If this can help anyone with a low gpa, and low GRE scores, then I’ve done my job.

Undergrad Major: Business
GPA: 3.1 overall
Prereq GPA: 4.0
Last 60 GPA: 3.3
GRE: V: 150 Q:144 AW: 3

Volunteer/Work Eval Forms:
1.) School OT - 160 hours
2.) Camp Leader - 456 hours
3.) Local Food Bank - 112 hours

Letter of Rec:
1.) Adapted Physical Education Specialist
2.) School RN
3.) Anatomy Professor

My stats aren’t great, but I know I had great experiences, strong evaluation forms and letters of rec. The people I specifically chose to fill out my forms and write my letter of recs are people I built relationships with. I worked/volunteered with them for years and they know the kind of person I am, so they 100% vouched for me. I work with the special education team for children with moderate/severe disabilities, which means I work closely with the OT offering direct support to our kiddos. I graduated undergrad 7 years ago, so I don’t think I’m the typical applicant.

SJSU dropping the minimum GRE scores saved me. After my test date got canceled multiple times due to the pandemic, I took the chance and chose not to retake at home. I never thought I’d be posting my stats, but here I am. I was always embarrassed of my gpa and test scores, but I got in so that says something.

For future applicants: Work hard, take initiation, build relationships, and choose people you know will fully support you! Don’t just do it for the sake of getting hours. It shows in the volunteer evaluation forms!

For current applicants: I know the waiting game is REAL, so that’s the most difficult part. I checked my email a hundred times each night. I believe timing is important and what's mean't to be, will be. Good luck to all!

Hi sure thing! So classes for me are Monday-Thursday. Some days I have morning classes and afternoon classes and some days just morning or just afternoon. Each class is around a 3 hr block so (9 AM- 11:45 AM and 1:30-4:15 PM). Sometimes professors take the whole time and sometimes they don't. For the first semester, the majority of the classes were synchronous (you attend class and they lecture live) and a few lessons were pre-taped and you watch on your own time (asynchronous). It all really depends on your professor.

I believe if everything goes accordingly, we should have in person classes next Fall. But if not, I wouldn't worry as Fall quarter of first year online is the best time to be all online and is totally doable. The challenging part is only arranging through zoom on how to do projects.

I have a few classmates who worked and I have to say I totally admire them for doing so. I can only speak about it from my standpoint, which is I don't think I would be able to manage. But then I have some classmates that told me that motivated them to not waste anytime? So it really depends on you. The workload (mostly reading and projects) does take a lot of effort in managing time. I would suggest not working for more than 10 hrs a week.

Hmmm I think that basically covers the basics. If you think of anything, feel free to message me or ask on this forum. :)

Thank you so much for being vulnerable and sharing your stats. I have to admit, seeing everyone's stats made me feel like I wasn't going to get in, primarily because my GRE verbal scores weren't great. You're post gave me hope. I don't know you, but I am proud of you for making it in.

Thank you!! That truly means a lot to me. Everyone on here has incredible stats, and it always made me feel like I didn't have a chance. I know comparison is the thief of joy, but it's difficult not to let it get to you. We all want it really bad and the truth is that it is competitive. I hope you get in and everyone else who has been trying to. There's still a lot of time left to hear admission decisions 😊

Hi! I took neuroanatomy at UCLA Extension last March.

The class consists of:
- Weekly quiz and Discussion/peer commentary
- 1 "Student Presentation", which is really just a discussion post on a scientific article/area of your choosing.
- 1 Literature Review paper on a topic relevant to functional anatomy of your choosing.
- 1 Cumulative Final Quiz

Dr. Helder Araujo is a stickler for how you should write/organize your discussion posts/paper, but he gives you pointers and tips as the class progresses. Overall, I'd say it was doable and a good option. Cheaper than SJSU's course if that makes a difference.

Thank you so much for details of the class! I’m currently working abt 27 hrs/week and I’m debating on whether to take it now or in the summer at SJSU. Would you say the class would be easy to manage working that many hours? I know it’s going to be a lot of studying, just not sure how much?

I wouldn't say the course was so challenging, but there's definitely studying/reading involved. If you have a good foundation of anatomy, then I think you should be good to go. At the time, I worked about 35 hours/week and I was able to get by studying 2-3 hours, maybe twice a week. Dr. Helder Araujo posts powerpoint slides along with a lecture video for each chapter/section.

I've learned:
- Google is your best friend!
- Time and thought will have to be put into your discussion posts! It shows. ALWAYS give proper references/citations in your discussion posts/paper.

If I were to do it again, I would 100% find a group of people to do it with to at least compare discussion posts before submitting. I did it alone, so I never knew if I got the correct answer or not. That was always nerve wrecking. For instance, for the first discussion, we had to look at a picture and tell if it was a CT scan or MRI. We also had to diagnose what it was. The answer was air embolism, but explaining how and why we got to our answer was very crucial as well. The book was a great resource and was definitely used. It was easy to read. I ended up getting an A-, but he bumped it up to an A on my transcript.

I'd say go for it so you can relax and at least not have to think about classes in the summer before grad school starts. I hope this helps!

Congratulations!!! Do you know what day you were timestamped? (I timestamped Oct 17 and I've been wondering if they have seen my app yet).

Also, may I ask what your stats are, please? 🙂 Thank you!

Wow, thank you!!! All of that is incredibly helpful. I took anatomy 4 years ago so I’m a bit rusty. I am leaning towards taking it though. I think I’ll get the textbook now so I have time to read through it to get a better idea of the material. Well if anyone else on this thread ends up taking it, we should definitely discuss before submitting our discussion posts haha

Thank you! I'm not too sure, but if I remember correctly the tracking for my mail said it was delivered on October 13. I emailed a week later on the 20th to confirm they received it and they confirmed a week later.

Sure! My stats aren't the best and as @ccx said, it proves that SJSU looks at applicants holistically.

Major:
- B.S. in Human Development @ UC Davis
GPA:
- Last 60 units: 3.18
- Prereqs: 3.43
GRE:
- V: 155, Q: 150, AW: 4.5
Volunteer:
- 197.83 hours under a pediatric OT
- 3510 hours at a preschool (this was a paid experience where I worked as an assistant teacher and was later promoted to a lead teacher)
Letters of Rec:
- Pediatric OT
- Human Development professor from UC Davis
- School Director/my boss at my preschool

Looking at my GPA and GRE I met the requirements minimally. However, my GPA was on an upward trend. I was a biochem major for a majority of my time in undergrad which brought down my GPA and a few of those classes were still within the last 60 units. Also, my strong points were my letters of recommendation, volunteer evals and personal statement. Those who wrote my letters and evaluations know me very well since they have known me for years.

I hope my stats can give confidence to those who feel wary with their stats. Good luck to all those still waiting! There's still plenty of time!
