Hello, I will be applying to Cornell University, University of Florida, Louisiana State University, Washington State University, Kansas State University, and Texas A&M University. Like all applicants, I need to write my personal statement. I am asking succesful applicats to eithyer post their personal statements to help us out.

Thank you🙂

A personal statement is personal. So i doubt you'll get many people who will post it in a thread. Besides that, you have only posted one time before. Most people will share their essays for someone who contributes to the forum regularly. Also, since this is a personal statement, there is no right or wrong essay. Include your experiences, what you have learned, why you want to be a vet. (Use the prompt on VMCAS as guidance).

There is another thread where people have offered to edit/read over essays if you want some advice on yours.

good luck!

don't think that you'll have much luck asking people to just post their personal statements. however, there is a huge list of people in a recent thread from the c/o 2014 (and other classes) that are willing to edit yours. Last year, current applicants "swapped" statements and gave each other notes...plus you've only posted once. contribute a little bit and you may get a better response.

ETA: I just posted pretty much the same thing as BlacKAT33 without realizing it

Seeing as its a personal statement which you are asking strangers to give you, I will say you will probably have very little luck, especially as a non-contributing member of this forum. If you hang around a bit, maybe contribute, perhaps some people would be willing to help edit a PS you have written.

ETA: Sorry, I was clearly beaten to the punch by Blackat and jpeterman

You can PM me if you want me to edit yours--I tutor for several writing courses so while my writing may not be up to par, I'm pretty good at editing others' 🙂

here is what I wrote IRL:

please let me in to vet school. i love animals you see and nobody loves animals as much as i do. in fact i had a childhood dog that died and it changed my life forever. my family vet says i would be a good vet. my mom says i would be a good vet. i watch a lot of animal planet and emergency vets is my favorite show. i love when they save puppies! so my goal is to save puppies.
biology is my favorite class too. so i obviously love science, even though we have to take a lot of it! plants are boring though. i mean who cares about photosynthesis, lets get to saving puppies!!

hope this helps. i love to help people too! 🙂

I would like to add a paragraph to the PS.

Please ignore my C average in science classes, they are filled with pre-med students who think studying is more important than watching Grey's Anatomy marathons.

I have lots of experience with animals. I used to walk my dog when I got home from school if I didn't watch TV or play video games. I also had a hamster but he died quickly (I don't know why).

 I can see why you two got in to vet school. Your PS's were beautifully written masterpieces.

roflmao at the both of you. needed a good laugh today 👍

Continuing the fun...

The death of my hamster Snooglewookie was a turning point in my life. It really drove home a reality of vetinery medicine that I think most other applicants don't understand: if you aren't a vet, animals can die even if you love them. This realization cemented my iron will to become a vet.

Since my great epiphany, I have delved new depths of dedication in gaining animal experience. I am an active member of PETA, and the day I joined I burned my collection of leather shoes and purses on the front lawn of my neighborhood KFC. Please accept this humble offering as a sign of the unwavering love of all creatures and, by corollary, my promise of excellence in the vetinery profession.

:laugh::laugh: this is so great, please keep adding people! i would myself but i'm not a good comedian. it needs to be around 5000 character spaces to make it official lol

By the way, DEChristianVet, if you are interested I would be happy to discuss your ideas for a PS. As a writing tutor, I know that sometimes it is difficult to imagine what you want the final product to look like without some sort of template --perhaps you want to look at old statements for structural ideas? The nice thing is, I think schools are more interested in original content and presentation than they are in having a statement that fits some pre-set formula. Ergo, I don't see how reading old personal statements could be that helpful. But as I said, I'd be perfectly happy to help if you need someone to discuss ideas with 🙂

I agree that personal statements are "personal," but I totally understand why you would like to look at others. I know that I felt so much more confident in my own once I had read others. It also helped me to really get working on my own. My personal statement looked nothing like any others I read either. Anyway...I am willing to send you mine if you want but I will not post it in a thread. I'd love to read yours if you have started...or whenever you do! Let me know if you want me to send it to you

ooooh let me add some!

I've grown up with animals all my life so I have very unique and varied experience. We had 10 dogs total, all purebred cockadoodles. I took care of all of them. I'm very interested in behavior so I taught all my dogs tricks. I even taught one to play dead. Two of them were kind of aggressive though, and using Cesar Milan's techniques couldn't even help them, so we brought them to the pound. One of them bit our next door neighbor, and the pound worker told me they would euthanize him because he wasn't up to date on his rabies shots. I hope my other dog got adopted. I didn't just have dogs. I had a pet raccoon, two tortoises, 5 chinchillas, 3 burmese pythons (we let them go in the wild when they started eating our chinchillas), a spider monkey that I used to dress up, and 2 bobcats (defanged and declawed of course). I think my unique upbringing makes me a great candidate to become a zoo vet.

Just having animals growing up was not my only motivation for becoming a vet. The defining moment for me was when one of my cockadoodles, Snookums, almost died of parvo. I took him to the emergency vets, and they told me that they wouldn't save him unless I paid $1000 in cash! I couldn't believe it!!! I couldn't afford that, so I took him home. Thanks to the greedy vets who cared more about padding their wallets than the animals they claim to love, I lost not only Snookums, but 3 of my other doodles, who also came down with it that week.

I know that because of my compassion and love for people and animals alike, I will be a much better veterinarian. I would never make anyone suffer the way those vets make me and my pets suffer. I know that my poor grades in the sciences and low GRE scores may seem like a weak applicant, but my passion and personality will get me through. What kind of vet would you rather have for your pets: A nerdy vet who can recite a textbook but only cares about making money off of sick animals, or a compassionate vet like me, who will do anything to save every life???

I only decided to be an animal doctor last year. I used to want to be a teacher but they don't make enough money, and I know my vet makes a lot of money because the office is nice and his car is only 5 years old. Plus I don't really like people. I don't have the best people skills, but I get along great with animals. I can speak to them in their language, like when Dori speaks whale in Finding Nemo. I run a rescue group out of my house. My welfare check pays for thier food(only the best - Old Yeller) and I vaccinate them myself with those shots you can buy at the Tractor Supply. My grandpa has diabetes and I give him his shots like almost every day, so I'm already ahead of all the other people applying. I read all kinds of vet stuff on the internet and I know that Parvo is made up by vets, so I don't need to take that class either. Please let me in to your school, I won't let you down, I promise. My second cousin's husband's wife is a vet and I know I'm smarter than her.

😍😍😍

I've nothing to add, as all my topics have already been covered by others 🙁.

But I was wondering...I wonder if they actually get PS's that are similar to y'alls editorial masterpiece?

from a couple i've seen... YES (though i really hope those were edited big time before actually being submitted)

P.S. those were non-SDN'ers by the way... the same people who were applying with close to 0 real experience

I have tried to edit the PS into a unified total... 4936 characters. All ready to go!

Speaking of money, I am not too worried about the debt of vet school. I am so old that I will probably die before I have to repay my loans. Hah Hah Hah. The joke will be on them. And don’t worry, my memory ain’t great but my vision is great and I can copy answers off the students next to me whenever necessary.

ps - I have a final tonight which I am going to bomb big time but at least while I am struggling I will be thinking about this message laughing hysterically. Thanks everyone.

I suggest you use a spell check. "succesful applicats to eithyer" is almost unreadable. Not to mention underlining every single word. That really helps.

I don't know why we had to write all of these words when a vet degree is just a two year degree anyway. 🙄

edit: my cousin is majoring in vet stuff at the community college so i just call her when my cockerpoos get sick.

haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahaha i love the hah hah hah. i dare a 2015 applicant to put that in. "the joke will be on them"

Awesome edit job by the way, SOV!

Does anyone care if I use our compilation for my PS? I can't put all my thoughts together more eloquently than that, and StartingoverVet put them together so nice!

😀

OMG, so great!! im considering printing that out so i can read it on my "bad days" once school starts

@StartingoverVet, Jamr0ckin,Minnerbelle, and related posts...
I absolutely LOVE your "personal statements". They seriously made my day! If there is a thread with stuff like that, please let me know...I could use another good laugh

My fav part, "You might wonder how all this was possible since I was born without legs or arms. Only able to turn book pages with my tounge, I was still able to read significant volumes of genetic/stem cell research. As a pre-teen I sequenced my own genome and modified my genes so that I could grow back my limbs. I then went on to earn black belts in 3 different kinds of martial arts."

 This thread is great. I think most of the topics have been added to the PS already, so I really have nothing new to add. This gave me a good laugh after a very long day at work. Thanks!

Out of space but more to add...

I've read ALL the James Herriot books IN ORDER! And watched the TV Show. Ever since then, my dream has been to stay out all night in the middle of winter with my arm inside a cow. And I've read all the Cleaveland Amory books. And I am really good with client relations. I don't even laugh when they say spaded or neuterized or want the distemper vaccine to calm their pet. I can't wait to have over $200,000 in debt. Yay to saving puppies!!!😀 While I love puppies and their frito feet, my ultimate goal is to do research. I am especially interested in research involving the poo flinging monkeys favored by adcoms.

omg this is hilarious. and then i realized....i bet someone, somewhere HAS done research on this lol

Hey now, for some of us, this would be defined as fun. It's called "the suck" and we embrace it. It falls in line with walking home 14 miles after spending 3 days running around the woods in the rain, jumping out of an airplane at 2 AM in February and sitting around on the ground for 4 hours, then walking 12 miles home, and getting dropped off by a helicopter just after dark, walking all night in the driving rain, sleeping in a stream all day, then walking some more and staying awake all day the next day. It sucks, but it lets you know you're alive.👍

there are a lot of other things, that are enjoyable, that let me know i'm alive

Yes there are, but do you get paid to do them?😀

I've noticed that my bank account has been hovering much closer to the red ever since I had to start paying for my adrenaline highs.

That is the funniest PS I have ever read!

I also want to add in...

I know that my personal statement is now exceeding the character limit, but everyone knows that a great veterinarian can't be constrained by conventional limitations and boundaries. After all, I'm a free spirit. Like burning my leather... it shows I have hobbies and a life outside of veterinary medicine! But I also take my role in PETA very seriously. A couple years ago I saw an image of a monkey with lipstick and eyeshadow on, and it truly changed me. If "scientists" won't stop at mascara, who knows what they are doing to those poor animals! That is why I don't believe in vaccinations either. But don't worry, I am a strong believer in herbal tea and love. Love can cure anything. And I promise, as a veterinarian, to love animals with all of my heart.

I think we need to add HopefulAg's "The reason I want to go to vet school is because I want to be a plumber."

Hilarious additions everyone. This might be so ridiculous that the person might be offered an interview, just for kicks O_O.

I decided to become a veterinarian when I realized that my mother would let me experiment on the dog but not on my brother. It really hurt me when my boa constrictor didn't survive the surgery in my basement to remove our pet mouse from his intestines. Our veterinarian's refusal to see them made me realize that no one loves snakes, and snakes need love too! So I plan on being a snake veterinarian. I know my GPA is low but if you contact my high school you will find that I made straight A's in all of my remedial science and math courses. Please ignore the fact that I haven't taken the GRE either, I simply couldn't afford it. I have been preparing for my indebtedness as a vet student by maxing out so many credit cards that they won't let me have anymore. I also feel that it is a travesty to ask for money, so I only volunteer and won't let anyone pay me.

well what do you know, you're class of 2014 and changed your status to veterinary student already? 🙄

Shh, we already covered that. We don't want THIS thread getting locked too!

I would like to go on record by saying that I am very upset that I have not had an internet connection for the past week. This is one of my favorite threads of all time!!
