Successful Applicants c/o 2025

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have read every post on these threads for the past couple of years and I can't believe that I finally get to post here. I've dreamed of this day for a long time! I applied in 2018-2019 for early acceptance (I knew it was unlikely for me to get in, but wanted the feedback) and in 2019-2020 I was waitlisted #5, made it all the way to #1 in May, but never was pulled off. Huzzah!!! After long wait, I am so happy to finally post on here :) :)
I'm hoping my story will give hope to those who get rejected their first time. If this is your dream, absolutely do not give!

Age, Gender, State/Country of Residence, Traditional/Non-traditional applicant, # of times you've applied:
24, Male, AL Resident, Traditional, Second-Time Applicant!

GRE (Q/V/W):
300 total (155/145/5)

Degree(s): Animal Sciences (Pre-Vet)

As you can tell, I did NOT have a good time in my undergraduate years with regards to my GPA. I even failed Organic Chemistry 2 the first time I took it, retook it, and still only made a C :arghh: . However, vet school was my goal, and thus I entered a Master's Program at Auburn and truly made a difference in my work ethic.

Auburn uses Last 60, so mine was 3.03 --> 4.0 (I made a 4.0 in my Master's!)

GRE (Q/V/W):
300 total (155/145/5) ---> 305 total (155/150/6) ; They didn't require it this cycle due to COVID, but I still retook to show improvement!

Degree(s): Animal Sciences (Pre-Vet) ---> Masters in Biomedical Sciences (Pre-Professional Health Non-Thesis)

-Professor at Auburn University in Cellular Biology (wrote for SECOND application)
-Lab Coordinator / Boss for Anatomy & Physiology Labs (wrote for SECOND application)

Essay Questions/Personal Statement:
Summary of what you wrote about
The only essay I truly remember writing about was for Auburn's Application. Their question was, "What was the weakest part of your life and how did you learn from it?" The first time I applied, I talked about failing Organic Chemistry 2 and not letting that one bad grade affect my future. The second time I applied, though, I mentioned strictly not getting into vet school and how, despite my uncompetitive GPAs, I was going to turn them around and prove that I truly want to be a veterinarian in this world.

My story is a testament to never giving up on your dreams. During my two application cycles, I went through the ringer from being flat rejected and told in my exit interview to "consider other options" ... to applying with a little more hope and still being Waitlisted. However, if veterinarian school is your passion and your goal, there is absolutely no one stopping you from getting there other than yourself! I went from graduating an undergraduate degree with a 3.14 to completing my master's this spring with a 4.0 and being more than ever prepared for veterinary school. Comeback stories are TRUE, and I am still in shock and awe that my dream is coming true!

Age, Gender, State/Country of Residence, Traditional/Non-traditional applicant, # of times you've applied:

23, Female, Kansas/Oklahoma (due to military), Non traditional, 2nd time applicant

First time around:
Applied: Kansas State University, Oklahoma State University, Tufts
Interview Invites: Ha. Not a one
Rejected: All of them.

cGPA: ~3.36
SGPA: Between a 2.8 and 3.0 depending on the school

I was told during my application reviews that I needed to work on my science GPA and consider applying to the private schools. If it helps anyone, it was silly to apply OOS to tufts, but they certainly gave me the most helpful file review.

Second application cycle:
Applied: Michigan State, Mississippi State, Midwestern, Ohio State, Purdue, VMCVM, Iowa State, Lincoln Memorial, Oklahoma State, Kansas State, WesternU
Interview Invites: WesternU, Lincoln Memorial, Oklahoma State, Kansas State
Waiting to hear: None
Accepted: WesternU and Kansas State
Attending: KANSAS STATE!!!

Overall GPA: 3.48
Science Prerequisite GPA: still not great after retakes. Between 2.87- 3.22 depending on the school
Last 45 GPA: 3.78

GRE (Q/V/W): 148 / 154 / 4.5 I do not remember percentages.

Degree(s): I have attended three different universities. It came to a certain point where I was tired of retaking course because one school didn’t accept another school’s courses. I ultimately got a General Science degree with a concentration on Chemistry, Sociology, and Biology.

Veterinary Experience: I really put myself out there to get as much varied experience as possible. I didn’t have the best grades, so I wanted to show my dedication and passion with experiences. I don’t exactly remember how many hours I had in earlier experiences so they are a ball park. In some of the places we have lived I had far less opportunities than others. The biggest thing is really put yourself out there, make mistakes! Something will work out.

Shadow SA veterinarian (high school) - 200 hours
Kennel Attendant in SA hospital (high school)- 500 hours
Shadow SA orthopedic surgeon- 6 hours
Shadow military veterinarian- 200 hours
Shadow Equine Veterinarian at Spy Coast Farm- 40 hours
Shadow Large Animal Veterinarians- 40 hours
Animal Care Assistant- ~1,000 hours
Nurse Assistant- ~270 hours

Animal Experience:
Riding club and Boarding stable- Horse owning member- I think I put about 1,000 hours
I put this down because I thought it was unique. I had my horses at a boarding club in North Dakota that was 100% self care; from cleaning stalls and other daily chores to facilities maintenance and fundraising.

Research:
Laboratory Technician at environmental toxicology lab- about 2,000 hours

Extracurriculars/Awards:
Treasurer at Riding club and boarding stable- 200 hours
secretary at riding club and boarding stable- 100 hours
Member of horse judging team- about 400 hours

Non-Animal Employment:

LORs:
Title of recommender (Vet? Manager? Supervisor? Vet tech?)
SA Veterinarian
Inventory Manager
Animal Care Manager
Theology Professor

Essay Questions/Personal Statement:
Summary of what you wrote about
I tried to draw from my various experiences to show what I learned and how I used the experiences to better myself. I don’t remember too much about the specifics, unfortunately! I know I mentioned the importance of interpersonal skills and leadership ability in veterinary medicine. I wrote some about a very personal loss that happened right before applications were due, and how I was even more determined Despite the hardship.

Listen, more than anything I wanted to give some hope for someone like me. It took me six years to finish my undergrad. However, when I started school I was on track to finish in only three years! While I was facing setback after setback, my friends were graduating and earning acceptances. I really struggled with mental health. I struggled in school because I convinced myself I wasn’t smart enough. I gave up and explored so many different careers paths. I thought for awhile I would be a sonographer, or a chiropractor, or a medical laboratory technician, so on. Nothing felt like the right fit and I kept coming back to veterinary medicine. This application cycle was a complete rollercoaster, but I knew when I started that I deserved a seat. I have learned to speak kinder to myself over this cycle. I have recognized that I’ve worked hard and I fought so many demons. My most validating moment happened during an interview when I was describing some work I had completed and my interviewer said it was very impressive. I think it is such a good idea to go and explore different career paths. When you have decided on veterinary medicine, and have erased any doubt, remember to be kind to yourself. Hard work will pay off. The voice that says you aren’t good enough, or you will mess up, blah, blah, blah— that voice is a liar. Someone somewhere is going to recognize your passion and you will earn a spot where you are meant to be.

Anyway, thanks for reading through this ramble and I’m rooting for you!

I wrote about my future goals of working in community medicine and made them interactive stories that sucked the reader in. It’s ok to add personality and to make the reader laugh, they will be more likely to remember you! I even started one of my 3 essays off with my favorite quote from a client “I think there’s worms in stool” and the they said “this is my poop“ when I thought it was there their pets.

Be creative, be yourself, and have fun with your essays.

Essay Questions/Personal Statement:
Summary of what you wrote about

Essay-
I wrote about how I love how in the veterinary profession, no matter what we do, we make a difference. It is really important for me to choose a career in which I can make a change in the world- and this is it. Whether it's helping an owner say goodbye to their best friend during a euthanasia, or helping conserve an entire species on the planet- we all can make a difference in our work whatever career path we choose with vet med.

Personal statement- I chose this to talk about why I received a series of failing grades in 2013-2014. I was unfortunately wrapped in an extremely abusive relationship and it derailed my entire plans of wanting to be a vet. I felt useless and he actually ended up in prison and I left school to go home and be far from the situation. I got a job as a barn manager and then started taking classes to get a CVT. I then found a job with my current boss at a small animal clinic and she encouraged me to go back to school for my pre-reqs for vet school... which I did in the last two years.

It has been a long, rough journey but I am so happy I am finally here. I hope everyone who is feeling down about their maybe low GPAs can take a look at this and APPLY. Work for it and apply if it's what you really want.... this is a dream come true and if you put your mind to it you can do it, too.

Essay Questions/Personal Statement:
in summary, my goal for essays was to show I understand it's not always puppies and kittens and that even though I have limited veterinary hours, I understand the physical, emotional, and financial difficulties of the job and that I have a passion for addressing inequalities in the field; used specific examples from things I have witnessed instead of talking in generalizations

Please please apply. Don't get intimidated by other people with stellar GPAs who don't get in. Believe that you've done the work and are qualified. The goal for your application isn't to get accepted, it's to get an INTERVIEW and get your foot in the door. I knew once I got an interview I had a good shot, and I'm thankful that the 2 places who extended interview invites to me I seemed to do well at.

I am very very lucky to have been offered a spot in the AVC class of 2025. I definitely don't know how it happened, but it did. To anyone who might come across this and might be doubting themselves: it might be hard, but one rejection cycle does not mean you are not worthy of becoming a vet! It just means you have more time to learn before you get to start your next journey! :)

I also included how I have been shaped by the amazing vets that I work with and have been shown the type of vet I want to become.

LOWWWWW GPA ALERT! You don't need to be perfect. You need to show growth and tenacity. Did you have a ****ty semester, or maybe even a whole year... own up to it! You need to take accountability for your actions as a veterinarian, and blaming anyone but yourself will get you nowhere... at least that is what I have learned.

Applied: UofA, Purdue, CSU, Iowa State
Interview Invites: UofA (waitlisted)- was waitlisted last year too
Waiting to hear: none
Accepted: UofA (pulled off waitlist mid-April)
Attending: UofA

Overall GPA: 3.07 this year (3.2 last year... thanks Biochem)
Science Prerequisite GPA: 2.78-2.98 (depending on the school)
Last 45 GPA: 3.07

GRE: Did not take it this year

Degree(s): Biology w/ emphasis in Biomedical Science '20, A.S. in Biology

Veterinary Experience:
Small animal veterinary assistant: approx. 1,700 hrs

Animal Experience:
Competitive equestrian/horse owner- 10+ years but I think I only accounted for about 5k hours
Wildlife center volunteer-200hrs
Cat shelter volunteer- 200 hours
Dog Daycare attendant- 3,600 hours
Pet sitter: 300 hours probably so many more...

Research:
My biostatistics class required an independent research project so I put approximately 60hrs

Extracurriculars/Awards:
WICHE scholarship... yeah that's it

Non-Animal Employment:
Thrift store cashier for the same cat rescue I volunteered at- maybe 300 hours?
Nursing Lab Technician at my university- 200 hours

LORs:
DVM (practice owner)
DVM (relief)
Practice manager
Old dog sitting client
Dog daycare manager (owner)

Essay Questions:
- I remember one of my essays touched on how I hated hearing people say they want to be veterinarians because they prefer animals to people. I talked about the importance of the human-animal bond and my desire to help the people at the other end of the leash.
- Another essay touched on the importance of veterinarians in education, and I talked about my interest in someday working at a CVM program as a professor.
- I obviously had a very low GPA and this was my own fault. I talked about how when I started taking classes at my university I had no idea how to handle personal finances or tuition. I ended up on a debt collections list because I was in default for not paying tuition (I had not filled out my FAFSA and wasn't able to use federal loans). I ended up failing all of my classes due to the stress and ended up having drop out. I had to claw my way back up to a decent GPA and it took 6 years. It was a very big life lesson that I learned very late...Don't be me!

1 Veterinarian
1 Lead Technician
2 Professors - Animal Anatomy/Physio + Animal Anatomy/Physio Lab (different profs)
1 Professor - Biology + Biology Lab (same prof)

Essay Questions/Personal Statement:
I wrote about why the science of vet med interests me (was advised it's not enough to "just love animals, there has to be the desire and capacity to learn behind it." I also wrote about why emergency medicine interests me and why I will be a good match for it. I talked about difficulties with my mother leaving my father while he was hospitalized with DKA and myself becoming the sole caretaker of my father, while still in school full time, while still working 25-30hrs per week. I always am able to maintain a positive outlook, so I discussed these negative events (and others) while talking about how they have helped me grow and what I have learned.

Tips I was given that I feel were helpful:
- Write as if you have already been accepted "I AM a good fit vs I WOULD BE a good fit;" "I WILL demonstrate x, y, and z, not "If given the chance..."
- Keep it short and sweet. There is NO room for fluff, and the admissions committees will know if you lack substance
- If you have a specialty in mind, make sure to talk about it
- If you lack experience (ie. I was planning to volunteer in Uganda last summer but d/t COVID the trip was postponed 1 year), mention it (even if there is not a specific prompt dedicated to it).
- When talking about qualities veterinarians possess and how you possess these attributes, make sure to include specific examples
- USE SPECIFIC EXAMPLES (the more the better)

Some colleges may review your application and tell you what influenced their decision (if you are rejected), so it is always a good idea to ask. I asked UC Davis and they gave me a lot of good pointers for next cycle (if I had chosen to apply), as well as some positive feedback from this year's application (so I know what I do not necessarily have to spend time fixing)
hi!! first of all, congratulations!!!! i hope vet school is great for you! i was wondering if you would be willing to share the feedback UC Davis gave about your application! super curious, because your application seemed strong. thanks in advance!

Low GPA post! Writing this on my partner’s behalf (with his permission) because he’s too modest and doesn't like talking about his accomplishments.

LORs:

Essay Questions/Personal Statement:
Focused on his substantial work experience across several shelters and how much he had worked to overcome past problems.

First cycle he only applied to UGA and got rejected. Although acing the GRE, writing strong essays, and having excellent veterinary experience certainly helped overcome his grades, what changed between cycles was also getting glowing LoRs and straight As in his prereq classes.

We targeted schools that offered grade replacement and/or took the last 30/36, but in the end UGA accepted him anyway (they don’t do grade replacement), so his accepted stats for them were 3.2/3.1/2.85. Just goes to show how much of a crapshoot the process can be!
wow! congratulations!!! how did you do so well on your GRE???!!!

Avian Ambassador for the UGA Poultry Science department

LORs: 4
Two vets from a small animal/exotic/wildlife emergency practice where I worked during the summer of 2020
My research mentor who is also my faculty advisor
My pre-vet advisor

Essay Questions/Personal Statement:
I wrote about my passion for working with poultry and my desire to help provide veterinary medicine for underserved areas. There are dozens of counties across the US that have over 25,000 food animals, but no food animal vets! That statistic really started my passion for food animal medicine, and I have been just crazy about birds since I was in elementary school, so I thought poultry medicine would be a great way to work with birds for a living while also making a positive difference in the world.

My two cents: I have a fairly high GPA and a not so high number of vet experience hours. I was rejected from Ohio and Purdue without interview, while I got into Cornell, Tufts, UPenn, and LMU just fine. It seems to me, and this is just my observation, that the private schools seem to favor those with a higher GPA, and the public schools tend to favor more well-rounded candidates with more experience. Also, having a unique interest definitely helped me in my application process, I truly think it made me stand out. All of my interviewers in all 3 of my interviews brought up how food animal vets are really needed right now but there just aren't many people interested in this field.

Edited to add that I'm committing to Penn!!!!! This is honestly a dream come true and I wouldn't have guessed I would have received this scholarship in a million years. Definitely don't feel worthy, but I will work so incredibly hard these next 4 years to try and show that I am extremely thankful and will not take this for granted!!!!
I'd love to hear about this scholarship and how you got it! I'm stressing about the cost big time and to know these scholarships are out there is really helpful!

So excited and frankly PROUD to finally be able to post in this thread. Congrats to all of my fellow batch-mates! This is truly a dream come true for all of us.

Also **LOW GPA ALERT** On top of being non-traditional, my GPA is one of the lowest ones I've seen on this thread, so behold, there is hope!

Founding Veterinarian at the small animal practice I work at
Program coordinator at the equine therapy center I volunteer at

Essay Questions/Personal Statement:
My personal statements were rough, I just re-read them and tbh it's a miracle I got accepted anywhere.
1) I wrote about my desire to become a large animal vet. It was late onset, but I emphasized that it was very important to me. I also emphasized seeing myself not only caring for animals, but advocating for them as well.
2) Cheesy, but I wrote about how vets literally make the world a better place. I presented it by saying since they cater to literally every aspect of society (companion animals, consumer, research, entertainment, etc.), a vet's work goes well beyond the patients they see and therefore creates a ripple effect.
3) I wrote about my experiences in the hospital's I've worked at, and wrote about the importance of the attributes of strong work ethic, knowledge, and strong sense of self. I also opened with the joke that an attribute a successful vet has is good taste in work shoes. LOL. I'm not funny, it's fine. I know.

Anyways, my biggest takeaway, especially for all you low GPA folks, just do it. If there's a will, there's a way. Congrats again to my classmates and good luck to the next application cycle!

I also wrote a lot about my mental health struggles and how I wanted to help be a positive asset to those around me in the field.

Side Note: Originally I chose Colorado to attend but I had a personal trauma a few days before my biochemistry final and ended up failing due to it and my teacher didn't believe it was a good enough excuse. My university then paid for be to take it again in the summer but it was too late for me to take it to attend CSU so I choose to attend Ross this January and I am super excited. It was a very bittersweet change of events but I'm thankful to be able to attend veterinary school in general!

How were you able to shadow a military vet!? I’m super interested!

How were you able to shadow a military vet!? I’m super interested!
I am a military dependent, so I have base access! When I took my dogs in to the clinic on base to be registered I asked if I could shadow. I will say sometimes vet clinics on military installations will go long periods of time without a veterinarian, so that could be a barrier. If you have the access, just go ask! If not, you may be able to get in contact with vet students who have committed to serving upon graduation, and they may be able to get you in contact with someone about shadowing.
