I couldn't afford to go to all three interviews, so I had to narrow it down to two. I had my interview at Midwestern way before the other two came rolling around, so I had to choose between KSU and WSU. I ultimately declined WSU because I did not believe my spouse would have ample work opportunity in Pullman based off of my conversations with a couple of WSU alumni.

I've been speaking with the admissions advisors at a few schools somewhat regularly and have met with some of them as well. I got accepted to all 4 schools I applied to. I was never in regular contact with them and only in contact when I had questions (abount supplementals or course work satisifactions). My opinion they have alot of people asking questions all of the time so the less I bug them the better unless I have questions that needed answers after slogging through all the info online. With that said WSU where I currently go was probably my most involved contact. I did a tour the summer of applications. My main contacts from the tour were a student and two administrative reps who literally just send informational emails. When I interviewed they remembered my face suprisingly, but they were no where near looking at my application, evaluating me, etc. Structured this way for a reason and I'm sure the majority of places are like that.

I don't think it makes much of a difference, though I'm not super familiar with the selection process outside of my own school. I know Minnesota made everything into numbers- grades, experience, and then the interview (which was not conducted by anyone in admissions, since they didn't see my application beforehand) and then everyone is ranked by score, so there isn't any room for a connection to make a difference. I wouldn't be surprised if most schools had some way of preventing frequent contact from swaying the application process.

Hi @sheltermed I actually didn't do anything but apply, Iowa State has a certain number of scholarships (no idea how many) that they give to some 1st year students when they are accepted to the program. I think they're either based on grades, experiences, or unique backgrounds and vary greatly in terms of amount awarded. I have no idea why I was awarded one and definitely was not expecting it! Iowa State is just a special school I guess😍

Sorry I've been off SDN for a while! The scholarship essentially allows me to be in-state at Iowa for 4 years as long as I maintain a 3.0. The cost was comparable to WSU but I just fell in love with Iowa's large animal/equine program and I felt like I'd have more opportunities at ISU seeing as our hospital has the highest large animal caseload of any US school and hands-on opportunities from day 1. Ames also has the National USDA Animal Health HQ which I'm really excited about. Everyone is so supportive and wonderful so I'm glad I made the choice that I did though I had a very hard time saying no to WSU!

I've been a long time lurker and I can't believe I get to post here this year! I almost didn't apply this cycle because I thought my application still needed some work esp with my low GRE scores. I also didn't have crazy diverse veterinary experience or a large amount of animal experience compared to others. I'm really glad I took a shot because not only did I get into vet school my first try, but I got into my first choice and DREAM school! So to those that are scrolling through this thread in hopes of applying next year, don't be discouraged if it seems like your stats are not as competitive as others. You really never know how things will turn out and as long as you meet all the requirements, always give it your best shot 🙂 So excited for this upcoming year ^__^

Essay Questions/Personal Statement
I briefly talked about how I started on my path into vet med in high school by becoming a CVA which helped me land my first job in a vet clinic. I later mentioned in one of the optional essays that I needed to work through college for financial reasons. The rest of my PS involved me talking about my passion for medicine and how the “picture” I had of my future as a vet changed by going to grad school. I really emphasized the role veterinarians play in One Health and how it specifically applied to my interests.

I didn't think I'd be writing in here this year. I didn't decide to become a vet until sophomore year of college and I'm also low-income. I had to do A LOT of catching up. My grades weren't the best because I was working so hard both to get vet hours and to pay for college.

Add onto that I'm a bona fide overachiever and set my sights for several "top tier" vet schools for my first application cycle. My application both of these 2 cycles did not match the schools I applied to all that well. I set my sights high, thinking that only a "top tier" vet school was worth my time. Guess what? If you have the drive and motivation, it doesn't matter where you go to vet school. You'll be a great vet if you have the drive to do it. Learn from my mistake and apply to schools who emphasize traits that you excel in (research experience, high last 45 GPA, etc.), not just your dream schools!

Anyways, here's all my stats. Just goes to show that perseverance pays off!

My Wisconsin diversity essay was really focused on how I'm a low-income student who has had really close experience with dealing with angry customers/clients, working in team environments, and handling my own money at an early age.
