Summer Research Application and Acceptance Thread (REU, SURF, SURP, SIP, AMGEN etc.) 2016

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Notifications? It hasn't even been two weeks since the application due date!
It's a rolling application program haha. Those who submitted the first month hear back now

I applied to their SURF program through Cincinnati Children's Hospital. Application completed 12/8/15. Haven't heard anything.

I applied to Cincinatti Children's too!

I did just find that the SURF program is rolling while the ROSE program is not (says their website), sorry for the confusion!

And yeah I don't know about the Rose thing but I spoke with the surf lady and she told me they had already started notifying :/

Anyone else get notified by Boston?

I also was wondering why I haven't heard anyone apply to the SURP at Pitt's Medical School. I did that one last summer and loved it.

I have been accepted by multiple programs, multiple times. So if you guys would like my stats I can post them

Boston...what? Boston's Children?

I applied for the NIH Scholarship/research program does anyone know a lot of info about the program and chances or anything?

Just got into UPenn SUIP through the Leadership Alliance!
CONGRATULATIONS!!

Do you know if the Leadership Alliance notification date different than if you didn't apply through it? Wondering because the website said they will not start making notifications until the last week in February 🤢

Thank you!! Also, I have no idea. On the website they say they encourage applications through the Leadership Alliance, so maybe they look at those first? I have no idea, though, since that's pretty unfair and doesn't make much sense, so don't take anything I say too seriously. Good luck, my fingers are crossed for you! 🙂

I interned at the NIH this past summer so if anyone has any questions, you can ask me!

I applied for the NIH Scholarship/research program do you know a lot of info about the program and did you apply for the scholarship.

Did anyone apply to programs at the University of Cincinnati? The ROSE or SURF?

I applied to Cincinnati SURF. I finished the application in December but my recommender didn't submit his letter until 2ish weeks ago so I'm not expecting to hear anything for a few more weeks.

With Cincinnati SURF will they email you even if they've decided not to accept you? Or do they just email if you are accepted?

"All students will be notified of their status by March 31st."
So yep, rejections, BUT NOT UNTIL THE LAST DAY OF MARCH.

The worst part is that I also applied to a fully funded multi-year NIH program at my school that would obviously take precedence over any other program. But we don't find out about that until the beginning of summer. So if I get into a summer research program and the fully funded, I feel like I would have to bail on the summer program last minute which should be ****ty.

Lol, I just got the doodle poll for a DAAD skype conference interview, and all the slots on Friday are between 4 AM and 7 AM. They must have forgotten that I live on the east coast and tend/try to be asleep at that time...

Imagine being on the west coast tho ..... That's 1am to 4 am LOL
I'm not professional or particularly nice between midnight and 9 am

I just got accepted to Pitt for medical school and for fun looked to see when the SURP application was due. Since it is March 1st, my undergrad is now applying because we thought it would be great if we are there at the same time.

Does anyone know when the Ohio SUCCESS Program send out acceptance/rejection notifications?

I applied to Ohio SUCCESS and I have not heard anything back since the supplement form. Have you heard of anyone getting in already? Or do you know when the program typically sends out acceptances?

Hey, I applied to Pitt SURP! When did you hear back? And what were your stats?

Hey, I applied to Pitt SURP! When did you hear back? And what were your stats?

Good luck! It's a wonderful program. Pittsburgh is one of my favorite city and Oakland in particular is a perfect college area. I heard back March 17 of last year.

My stats:
URM
GPA: 3.99
Small liberal arts school
A minor publication in the field of organic chemistry
I have a ****load of extracurriculars that really set me apart. Class president, athlete, resident assistant, tutor for three classes.

Just got accepted to Rutgers RiSE REU for Chemistry. Waiting to hear back from others in March.

I completed Leadership Alliance last summer and SMDEP two summers ago and can answer anything about these programs if anyone has questions!

Stats:
Non-URM
Financially/educationally disadvantaged background
3.82 GPA, sGPA very slightly higher
2 years of research in genetics
1 year of research in organic synthesis

Do you guys have any advice for the best way to go about asking for an accelerated decision from a program?

Do you guys have any advice for the best way to go about asking for an accelerated decision from a program?

You can ask them for a decision politely if you have been offered a position somewhere else and need to commit. I can't think of any other reason to ask for a quickened process.

I haven't heard anything either after the supplement

For those familiar with Mount Sinai's SURP, when do you think we can expect to hear back from them? Probably late March, I would assume? Regarding AMGEN-Columbia, has anyone received an email from a potential mentor displaying interest in them? Good luck to everyone!

I applied to Mount Sinai, and based on previous years, I think we'll know around mid-March or so. Out of curiosity, does it say anything under "status" for your application? My status of the app still says "submitted"...I'm not really sure if it's typical for them to update it to "under review" or "decision made" or whatnot...

Thanks for the information! I hope to see some changes regarding the status page, but for now it seems as though "submitted" is the only thing showing up.

Anyone have any experiences with the NC NIH biochemistry programs as well as the SURE program at UNC?

Thanks.

In regards to the Mount Sinai, they have already sent out their first wave of acceptances. They were sent on February 12.

Thanks for the information! Do you know how many waves there are by any chance?
I honestly don't. They said they are expecting to accept 20 applicants so I am assuming they will send them out one by one as people reject their offers. They have a week to make a decision so if you're at the top of the list, I would expect the next wave to be soon after February 19th.

Thanks again - congratulations if you were one of those twenty!

Hey guys, I need some advice. So I've been in contact with a PI from DAAD RISE in Germany. If you don't know, the way DAAD works is you submit your application to the program, as well as cover letters for 3 different projects you are interested in. The PhD students who submitted the project review the application, some will interview, and eventually submit their student rankings to DAAD, where the matching process occurs based on rankings, and other factors like GPA. The PI I have been in contact with said he would be willing to put my name on the top of list and offer me an additional 1500 euros, but only if I would be willing to commit. However, I am still waiting to hear from some other summer programs that I think I would rather attend. I don't want to tell the PI that I can commit when I'm still not 100% sure. But, at the same time, I don't want to say no, and then not get into the other programs. The rankings need to be submitted to DAAD by tomorrow mid-day German time, and I emailed my top choice program for an expedited response but I have not heard back from them. I'm probably going to email the PI tonight or tomorrow morning with an official answer, do you guys have any advice on how I should handle the situation.

SR-EIP decisions should come out tomorrow or on tuesday!!! Super nervous and excited at the same time

Has anyone had any experience with Mount Sinai? Like where we are housed, what the accommodations are? I participated in a summe

I understand that completely. I applied to 19 programs, and the first one that I got a response back from accepted me. The funny thing is last year, the very last one I heard back from accepted me and all the ones before it were rejections so it made that decision easy. I applied to DAAD as well, and it's a great opportunity. I haven't heard anything from them and it this point I hope I don't because I'm committed to a great program. There aren't many times in the coming years that you will be able to go abroad so I would definitely encourage you to fully consider the benefits of that experience, but also consider what techniques and information that the project will provide you with. No one can tell you what to do, but if you haven't heard back by the deadline, go with your gut. Best of luck!

How do you know it's going to be tomorrow or tuesday? Cause I logged on and it only said "Offers of placement are being made now and will continue to be made through the month of April."

It should be today later on hopefully if not at the latest the end of this week

Mine says this

We are currently updating our records and reviewing all applications. We will post the status of your application by the week of February 15. Please do not phone or send email inquiries concerning the status of your application.

Thanks for the advice! I ended up kind of confirming, but wording it in a way that was like "this project is definitely my top choice if DAAD accepts me" so that hopefully gives me some leeway later on. Don't wanna start burning bridges just yet, lol.

Any news from Mayo SURF yet? Last year it seemed like they'd already offered some positions by now!!
