I have a couple questions for those that are currently at kingsville. how are the ippe/appe sites at kingsville? is it randomized? how many hours per week? when does it start?
The IPPE/APPE sites are not all in Kingsville - it's all over southern Texas extending upwards to San Antonio and all the way down to the border, as the school was designed to serve southern Texas.
In the first 3 years, "Service Learning Hours" are required for IPPE. They are essentially volunteer hours in which the activity has to involve educating people or providing a healthcare service, eg. heath fairs, health presentations to school kids, counseling, immunization, taking vital signs, etc. For P1 it's 30 hours, P2 it's 25 hours, and I'm really not too sure what it is for P3's
😛. There are many different volunteer opportunities, including those provided by the school, organizations, or an approved one from the student.
P2's get an introductory pharmacy preceptorship. They rank their top preferred locations anywhere in the south including San Antonio, Corpus Christi, Kingsville, Victoria, Brownsville, and the small towns in between. They'll try to match up students to their preferred locations as much as possible. This is done every Friday, in which instead of classes, P2's go to their site.
P4's, for APPE, the selection of locations are also given by preference of the student and includes a larger location since the last year is only pharmacy experience. P4's have no actual classroom lectures and thus aren't ever at the school. The locations for APPE extend to Houston, and I've heard they're working on getting a site near Dallas.
In total you get 1500 experience hours, the required amount for Texas licensing, this includes the 300 hours of early practice experience.
