So I just found this thread from last year, and I'm assuming/hoping that Baylor started accepting people a month later last year. Can anyone verify this?
I may have mentioned this before, but Baylor started giving acceptances around Oct 22nd last year.

I heard something that their curriculum was little different than UTSW, something like systems curriculum..is it still like that or have they changed it?if anybody know more about it... and also do they ask lots of the same old ethics/ health care issues queations? is the best way to prepare to read pver your research and tmdsas or any tips?
thx

If there's one thing I've learned about interviewing in Texas, its that none of the schools (except maybe A&M) are predictable in their interviewing questions. You have to be ready for anything.

Well, how did u get to stay with a student? do you need to know somebody perosnally that goes to utmb or do they arange that?I havent received the mail package yet, so i dont know how that goes? But i would also prefer staying with a student🙂

The info is in the mail packet. I forget exactly, but you have a few options and you email the coordinator for the option you want (med frat, student, med womens assoc).

I definitely recommend making notes to yourself at the end of the day, because yes, I remember thinking good things about their curriculum... and now I can't remember what those good things were. 😳

Nobody in Texas has asked me any ethics/health care questions, thank goodness (why they expect us to be experts on the health care system is beyond me! I have enough to do keeping up with the things I'm meant to be learning in school!)... my UTMB interviews were pretty typical tell me about yourself/tell me about at time in your life when you [...]/why medicine.

UTSW does systems blocks in the 2nd year, so it's kind of a mixed curriculum here.

UTMB

And so does an 8-12 class schedule, at least for those of us who aren't lecture learners. On the other hand, they don't have a pre-published syllibus like San Antonio does.

I stayed in the Econo Lodge. The telephone, remote control, and wireless internet were all broken, but it was half as expensive as everything else on that overpriced island! 😡

Tomorrow we have a lecture from 9-10, then lab from 10-12. This is considered a great day, because we can study the rest of the day. However, most of the times, class gets out at 2.
Syllabi are published, but you have to buy them.
If you want to go first class, stay at the San Luis. But I'd recommend staying at the La Quinta Inn on, I think 16th street. It is about a five minute drive to campus, pretty much a straight shot at that. The Econolodge is the worst motel I've stayed at in Galveston, and I've stayed at most of them. But the price is right...

Thank you guys, y'all are great at responding to my questions. I already looked up La Quinta, but ill wait for the email packet first and then reserve a hotel. Oh, it will be fun, cause im going to houston that week for a conference and than ill just have to drive to galveston🙂 im so excited, cant wait..I also have an aquaintaince in their graduate program, so maybe she'll show me around too🙂
thx again

I second the recommendation of the La Quinta. That's where I stayed. It was nothing to write home about, but it was close to Chili's and to UTMB, as well as pretty much right on the beach (in any other beach town, that would be a huge plus, but in Galveston, well, I dunno.)

don't relax just yet! I've had a couple of ethical questions just from one interviewer at UTSA. i was even asked what i would suggest doing to alleviate the problems in health care. in the end, it really depends on each individual interviewer.

The beach there just covers your car in salt and sand while being gross.

hi everyone,
I think this may have been mentioned before but I don't have much time to look through all the pages.
Did anyone attend the Texas Tech info session/dinner in Dallas? Is it worth it? I haven't received an interview from them so I think its kind of weird that I was invited to this. Do they just invite all applicants? Does it look bad to NOT go?
THANKS!

playmaker_90,

Where did you hear this?

Maybe it is wishful thinking but it sure seems like it would be hard for UT-SA to come up with some 400 "ones" considering they are likely only 1/2 way through their interviews and a significant portion of those already interviewed are likely "ones". Does anyone know what portion of their interview dates they are through, thus far?

TIA,

'Rambler

I dont think they offer interviews on the basis of numbers i think someone stated how they offer interviews earlier in this thread however because they only have limited number of interview days remaining they will be giving interviews to people they consider ones if any one has attended a UTSA interview if they listened carefully they should echo the samething or please feel free to correct me if i'm wrong

Hey anyone go to the Social for UT-Houston? How was it? What was the dress code? I plan on going, just wanted to know what to wear🙂

playmaker_90,

I gotcha. My response was more because my grades preclude me from being a #1 and I didn't want to face the reality that they aren't going to interview me. I have since come to terms with mediocrity😉 .

Dr. VanNostran,

If it is the one at The Vault then it is pretty informal. I wore slacks and a Hawaiian shirt and I was way overdressed, no $hit.

I went last year and I was never invited to interview. I spoke with the dean of admissions, who approached me twice, and with other members of the staff and I was well-dressed and spoke kindly, but still no interview. There was only one other person there from my undergrad and she now goes to Texas Tech med so maybe it worked for her. But I think that the dinner has no relationship with your admissions status, ie I think she would have been accepted there regardless of whether or not she went there.

Thanks for the response Rambler! I hate dressing up

So, can someone please answer this question for me. I got processed on 9/13 and I have only heard from UTMB, UTSW, and UTH, and not the rest....did it take longer for the other ones??? I really want to hear from somewhere else and I have been paciently waiting since for two weeks! Should I call them to make sure they got my secondaries or is that too desperate?? did anyone do this? please help, thanks

I wouldn't worry yet.

Were you fully processed, with LOR as well? I've been processed since late august but my letters took forever to get where they needed to go, as of today I'm just now complete at A&M and am about to be sent off for screening. I also have only heard from UTH, UTMB, and UTSA. I wouldn't worry yet!! 🙂 I bet we'll get those other interviews around the same time!

Does anyone's TMDSAS applicant profile have a validation date yet? I'm wondering when they are going to do the validation. Seems risky to give out offers without making sure that the reported grades are accurate.

somemaybedoc,

I am a little ignorant as to what an update to the validation number means, can you give a brief explanation.

TIA,

At TMDSAS, they don't actually verify that your transcripts are the same as your reported grades until you have been granted at least 1 interview, I guess to save themselves some effort. The validation date is 000000 or something until they actually go ahead and verify that the grades you put in are the same as the grades on the transcripts.

The date is in the upper right hand corner of the applicant profile page in TMDSAS.

I sent in an extra letter to TMDSAS and it is marked as received but with the star that signals it is missing the TMDSAS form. The thing is that I filled out the form and handed it to the secretary of the person I got the letter from and watched her seal the letter with the form inside. What should I do? Would it be sufficient for me to just fax them a form with the part I filled out?

Call them, sometimes they just screw up when they put the reciept info in the computer.

wow that's a lot of changes in a few years. i hope baylor is making the right decision here.

I'd like to know how this will affect students on rotations. For example,
how much education has been done in St. Lukes vs. Ben Taub? Is the private
hospital experience important when Ben Taub is right there?

well from what i know, bcm students still rotate through ben taub and the VA so there's no loss in education there. according to students and administration, losing methodist and going to st luke's was not huge difference. from a recent graduate who completed med school and residency at bcm, he feels it was a huge loss to go from methodist to st lukes. i haven't talked to anyone about this recent move by bcm, but like i said, i hope they get things right. this could either be really really good or really bad for bcm.

in the end, i've found that it depends on who you ask. some like it. some don't care. some think it sucks. the recent grad obviously didn't like it, maybe that's why he left bcm faculty.

I'm a 3rd year at Baylor. We do a number of rotations through St Luke's and I think it's important that we get some exposure to private hospitals. As far as I know, as med students we haven't suffered at all from the loss of Methodist. Since we never rotated through Methodist in my class, though, I don't have any way to compare the two.

As far as the new hospital facility being built, you can bet Baylor has done it's research and made sure that this is the best move for the school. The administration is very proud of making it into the top 10 med schools and sees (as I understand it) the Baylor hospital as a necessary step to continue our progress up the ranks.

Feel free to ask about this during the Q&A sessions at interviews! This info was only recently made public, so might not have been brought up in previous sessions.

Good luck to all the Texas applicants!

How long does it take for texas schools to get invites out? I had my tmdsas complete for a little over 2 weeks and I got an invite from A&M already but I havn't heard from the others.

Does anyone know the typical turn around times?

does anyone have any clue if utsw will start sending oos acceptances directly after the 15th?

i know this is the first year of the new system, but any inkling of how they plan on handling the whole process would be appreciated.

Some of the stuff on this page sounds pretty bad for baylor. I'm just trying to make myself feel better for not getting interviewed there.

So here is the downside of the Methodist split, we lost some good faculty, like Stanley Appel.

Here is an email about the new BCM/hospital clinic announcement:

Dear Members of the BCM Family:

I am very pleased to report to you that the Board of Trustees passed a resolution at their meeting Wednesday that sets the course for the future of Baylor College of Medicine in adult clinical medicine. It is of similar magnitude to the decisions of moving from Dallas to Houston in 1943 and to the establishment of an independent Board of Trustees in 1969. After an in-depth discussion, the following resolution was approved unanimously:

"The Board of Trustees of Baylor College of Medicine recognizes the critical importance of control of an adult, private teaching hospital for fulfilling the College's long-term vision of pursuit of excellence in its missions of education, research and health care. Therefore, the Board instructs management to proceed with the development of a detailed plan for building an integrated Baylor Clinic and Hospital and authorizes an expenditure of $10 million for preliminary expenses to that end."

Fundamentally, this decision is about our vision of the future. As of this year we are the 10th ranked medical school in the nation and have been an intellectual engine in the TMC and Houston for over 50 years. We are positioned to achieve our vision of being ranked among the top five medical schools and being the destination for health-related education, biomedical research and superior health care. To be successful in achieving that vision, we must have a strong adult private teaching hospital. Today Baylor College of Medicine is the only medical school among the nation's top 20 medical schools that does not have a relationship with an adult private teaching hospital that meets the criteria of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) for an Academic Medical Center which is defined as:

• Being under common ownership with a college of medicine, or

• The majority of Chiefs are also medical school department chairs, or

• The medical school department Chairs are responsible for appointing the hospital chiefs of service

BCM's vision for the future is to be a world-class academic medical center with integrated programs in education, research and patient care. With the strength of the medical school and our outstanding affiliated teaching hospitals, we are well on our way to reaching that goal. The Board's decision allows us the opportunity to develop this strategic plan that will enhance the excellent programs already in place at BCM and in our eight affiliated teaching hospitals. Collaboration will, of course, continue to be an extremely important part of our mission.

An integrated Baylor Clinic and hospital will provide a unique resource for adult health care in Houston. It will also bring our considerable research to patient care while putting the patient first and providing a foundation for collaborative programs with other institutions. It is a resource that will integrate with our education and research missions, provide a home for our faculty, establish control and stability of our programs, and provide a workshop for translating science into medical innovations. Our science will drive future innovations and attract patients. The BCM Board recognizes t

My opinion on the matter is:

Pretty dang sweet. I'm jealous that I probably won't be around to see it.

What is the average step 1 for students at BCM?

Thanks for the reply. I don't think I'm going to attend because I figure in terms of what I'll learn about the school, I'll learn more at an interview if they want me. And if they aren't even going to interview me I don't really want to waste my time!

I got an invite to TT thing in Dallas, but I'm going to be out of town so I can't go. If anyone makes it - let us know how it goes.
