Now there is 🙄

O.K.???!

Any of you folks applied to TCOM?

Is a strange question or something?

Maybe nobody cares?

I wouldn't live in Denton unless they paid me.

and you're gonna get few responses unless someone was crazy enough to fill out the Texas application just for TCOM (there's nothing wrong with it, but the TMDSAS application is horrific).

I applied and have heard nothing 😡

I been thinking of emailing or phoning to confirm my interest . . .

I can't speak for Denton, but TCOM is in Fort Worth near downtown.

Denton...Fort Worth...Dallas it all still the same craphole.

The school is located in a really, really nice area of Fort Worth. But yeah, it is still North Texas which sucks.

I applied to all the Texas schools (allopathic) and TCOM at the same time. I haven't heard anything yet, but my application wasn't processed up there till 15th of November. It's probably in a big pile somewhere. I think they interview in January which is good.

Let me know if anyone hears anything or who & how to contact folks there at TCOM.

Yeah, but a lot of Texas students apply to TCOM because it is easy to do when you are already doing the other schools. However, TCOM's secondary sucked big time! So you may be right! They still get ~2000+ applications every year for 120+ students. They say the # of applicants has been increasing because of the TMDSAS central application. Who know's?!

I applied to TCOM...haven't heard a word from them.

I am a 2nd year at TCOM. Ft Worth is the nicest place for medical school in Tx possibly with the exception of UTHSC San Antonio. Houston and Galvatraz suck completely ( I am from big H), and College Station is the pits! Dallas is not too bad but you need a 43 on your MCAT to get interviewed!! Lubbock....need I say more!!LOL.

Fort Worth has an unbelievable historic district where the school is located, and the surrounding few miles is beautiful. Its like living in West University of Houston. And sorry to break the news to you, but TCOM is about done interviewing because they have to conform to the same schedule as all other schools. They have been interviewing weekly since August, because I see them wandering in their tour groups a couple of times each week.

TCOM is my 1st choice, and I haven't heard from them.

I've been accepted to KCOM and AZCOM, and just had an interview at OSU-COM.

Does anyone care to explain why I have an interview this friday at Baylor College of Medicine, the 5th most selective school in the nation (US News 04), and I haven't heard from TCOM yet, the apparently least selective school in Texas?

It certainly bothers me----when is the latest I can hear from them---doesnt anyone know their last interview dates? Thanks.

I feel your pain, BU Medic. I think that's really odd as well. I was accepted to 3 DO schools last year and interviewed at UTMB and heard nothing from TCOM this year or last year (I decided to reapply to all the TX schools and defer admission for a year). I agree that it's very frustrating. I would love to go to TCOM as well.

🙁

WOW, I thought only a handfull of people appled to TCOM. How many of you are state residents? I applied and still haven't heard a peep. 🙄 From what I can see online I am listing it as my number 1 choice.

Also I was one of the fools who did the whole Texas application just for TCOM. But then I said hey lets add one more just for fun! Being out of state I don't think my chances are super great. But What the H3ll!

I think that TCOM is selective for different reasons. I graduated from there and I know that the admissions committee goes over the applications VERY carefully. They are really looking to attract a particular kind of student and want to avoid the "MD wannabe's." TCOM is a great primary care oriented medical school. And, yes, there are days that I miss Fort Worth---especially Central Market.

Honestly not as a bash because I did want to go to TCOM but the two DOs that I know that graduated from TCOM both told me that they went DO because they coulnd't get into an MD school.

Maybe my application didn't sound DO enough for TCOM but I got other DO interviews.

I am so hacked at TCOM!!! When I first decided to become a physician, I wanted to be a DO and attend TCOM because of their philosophy of healing in a holistic manner. This is the third time I have applied to the school and I don't understand what I am supposed to do to get an interview there! I stayed up all night on Thursday trying to figure it out. Last year when I didn't get in, I asked them to go over my application. They pointed out areas of my application they thought I needed to improve and then I did just that this year!
What does it take?! How can people be accepted to out of state DO schools, interview at allopathic in-state schools and still not get a call from them?!
😡
Does anyone have any suggestions for contacting them and finding out if all is lost...again?
Does pestering a medical seem to work for anyone out there?

Sincerely,

Hacked off😍

STAC,

I know you're frustrated with the whole application process to TCOM. I can't figure out what they want either. It's very frustrating. And of course they accept MD wannabes. In a state that has a DO school on the central application service most applicants will apply there for the hell of it. Most don't even know what the whole DO thing is about.

Have you applied to out of state DO schools? There are lots of good ones out there, although they are much more expensive.

There are good ones in FL, CA, and AZ (which all has warm weather, just like TX!).

Personally, I'll be going to TUCOM next year.

Yes...however it doesn't make economical sense for me to be an outta state resident at a DO school when the allopathic schools in Texas will(hopefully!) take me. I bought a house here, work here, family&friends here, and the odds are that I should get accepted to school in Texas. So what gives with TCOM in particular?! That is the baffling point of all of this.
I have watched how TCOM has made a conscience effort to not sound DO over the years! They used to say that they believed "that mind, body and spirit are all connected...only when those three are functioning in harmony...blah blah....can wellness be achieved...or whatever." They don't go there anymore. I think THEY have the inferiority complex and are always defending how they are just like the allopaths and as a bonus...we get MORE training because of the manipulation. Why is the San Antonio Spurs basketball team physician used in their promotional material? They want to be more mainstream, less associated with the outta state DO schools.

Just my losy opinion...sense any bitterness?

It doesn't make economical sense for me to be out here, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

I agree. I was born and raised in Texas (went away for college but came back soon after), as were my parents and grandparents. I hate like hell to pay out of state tuition, but it seems like it's the only option for me. I'll probably come back for residency and hope to live in Austin eventually.

I know you're frustrated. I feel your pain!

Could you elaborate? I've always thought that TCOM was VERY osteopathic especially when I meet other DO graduates from other schools. We had pretty rigorous OMM practicals and was one of the few schools that actually required that all students do an OMM rotation. TCOM is also home of the National Osteopathic Research Center beating out KCOM, PCOM, CCOM, MSU-COM, and other older established DO schools. What would be *MORE* osteopathic in your eyes?

I am referring to the recruiting material that is now published and in the campus visits by their recruiters. I wasn't necessarily referring to the students but the admissions office. Sorry for the confusion.

Stac; here is some info that might help you getting in touch with someone at TCOM. When you call the admissions office, ask to speak to Jane Anderson. She works in admissions and is generally very helpful. Do be patient though if you have to leave a message and wait for a return phone call. You aren't the only applicant calling her. Just a little info about applying to TCOM. Their general rule is that they will not interview you if you don't have atleast a 6 in each of the three sections on the MCAT. Their applicant pool is just as competitive as the other MD schools in TX because of the simple fact that it is on the TMDSAS. If you had a a hard time conveying to them what you felt osteopathic medicine is about on their secondary, that might deter one from getting an interview as well. I interviewed at TCOM this year and really enjoyed it. It is a top notch school with probably one of the best Anatomy labs in the country. Just because you didn't get an interview doesn't mean you are not a great applicant. Getting into med school is a crap shoot. You could have mediocre numbers and get into BU or have steller numbers and not get in at all. Just be glad you do have interviews and try and pick the best place for you. As far as living in Ft. Worth is concerned, it's a great city. Denton is to for that matter but it's too far if you are thinking about commuting. Good luck. I would give them a call and see what's up. Be persistent, it'll pay off.

stac,
I interviewed and was waitlisted there last year. No movement and have not been able to set a meeting with mike kennedy to go over my application. in the mean time, I'm gonna apply out of state and study for the april mcat.

Thanks for the information, I appreciate your sincere help.
I will try speaking to Ms. Anderson, I have met her in the past at recruiting events. I think I'll call right now and find out when the last of the letters for interviews go out. That's a start and then I will let everyone know what I find out. Thanks!

Good luck, STAC. I hope everything works out.

🙂

Just as a side note. I have been involved in medicine for 13 years, working my way up from a paramedic to a PA. I am a student at TCOM and I can say without a doubt that you get a very rounded education, and the faculty are about as good as they come. Anyone who gets into TCOM should feel lucky that they are at one of the best medical schools in Texas, and by far the best DO program in the country. We are heavily recruited by some of the best residency programs in all the country.

pactodoc, I'm kinda thinking about going to PA school.

As much as I would to reapply to med school, I'm already 24 and times wasting away. I have to start supporting myself. However, I'm afraid that once I get out and work, I'll lose my ambition to go back to school. How long did you practice as a PA and what made you decide to go back to school? What are the advantages to being a PA?

Oh yeah,
How much to PA's make on avg? if you don't mind answering

A quick answer. If you think you can stomach practicing medicine for 1/2 the pay, not knowing as many of the answers as you would like to know, and getting less respect than you truly deserve, become a PA. It is actually a very good profession but it has its low points. I have practiced as a PA from age 28-32, and started medical school at age 31. You should not worry about the age thing and instead worry about what makes you happy. In the few years I practiced, I made close to half a million dollars. Having reduced my income virtually 90% over these years of medical school will never allow me to catch up financially. An average PA now makes close to 65K or so, but many people make a lot more. What are you lacking in your package for medical school you think? Shoot me a PM if you wish.

Matt

are you still able to work while in med school? sorry to jack this thread.

I was just told that they just received 75 new applications from TMDSAS today! Wow, that would suck to be in that pile...
As far as my own pile goes...so do the puns!
Anyway, I was told that they do not send out letters of invites, that if you are selected for an invite then they will call you by phone. I was told they will interview until the 16th of December. I think she said they call you as they get to your application if they are interested in you...I guess?
If someone else would call and verify this info that would be great! The # is 1-800-535-TCOM😕

Can I call BS on this one. I'm not calling you a liar STAC, but it's December 3, applications and all the supporting material was due November 1. A four week delay?

If their last interview day is December 16th...sucks to be those 75 applicants....

YOU call someone a liar?! NEVER!!!

But yeah, 75 apps today the lady told me.

You are right Stac. They only contact you by a personal phone call for interviews. They do not send anything via snailmail and will only send a confirmation of your acceptance for an interview with the necessary info for the interview via email. I can believe they just received another 75 apps. I know tons of people that sat on their arse and waited until the last minute to get things done. I hope they weren't planning on getting in this year, because the odds are against them. As far as when their last interview date is, I have no idea. If the lady said the 16th then it's the 16th. Good luck.

So are you basicly saying that you could potentially not hear from them at all? And how realistic is it for them to cut off interviews only a month and a half after the deadline? I mean there is no way they could possible get through every competitive applicant in that amount of time.
On the same thread, does anyone think it would be worthwhile to call and check on applcation status? 😕

Yes, they are very helpful in the office at TCOM. Several Texas schools end their interview season the week before Christmas.

As a student at TCOM, I notice that they post the list of interviewees on the class bulletin boards each day they interview. I think it is in case we know someone that we can welcome them. In an average week there are 1-2 lists that get posted, and each one has 10-15 names on it. So, my guess is that they could easily interview 45 more people in that amount of time before the 16th. But you have to ask yourself, what are the odds that a really competitive applicant would wait until the very deadline to get all their crap in? My guess is that they wouldn't. So, if you think you are competitive, then you should probably get an interview. But if you turned in your stuff in August and are still waiting, you have probably already been overlooked. TCOM will call you when they want to interview you. They will not send you a letter. They are good that way! The admissions staff here is the best anywhere!

Do you think it is worth it to call or contact anyone in particular at this point in the process in hopes of getting an interview? If so who and what are your suggestions on getting yourself noticed again, positvely. Thanks for your help!!

I would say that there is probably nothing you can do to stand out and get an interview. I know it hurts to hear that, but emails and phone calls probably do more to slow the admissions staff down and that probably does not hold well for you. You just have to trust and PRAY. That is what I did a few years ago. Good luck friend.

Matt

Ok, I just talked to the admissions office and they confermed two details. Yes they recieved 74 apps from TMDAMS on monday. They also stated that the last day of interviews is going to be the 18th of december. They did say that there won't be any letter of rejection mailed until just before school starts, this is because they might have an opening and pull an app from the files.

Just an FYI

But there is no way you are going to get called without them interviewing you, right?!

I'm in PACtoDOC's class at TCOM and I just wanted to second everything he has said. On an aside, I realize there are individuals that may feel slighted by TCOM's admissions process. But I don't think it is fair to single them out in this regard. The world of medical school admissions at all schools is far too nutty to make any sense of. I went to school at an East Coast Ivy, got pretty good grades, broke thirty on my MCAT, got interviews at top twenty East coast allopathic programs and only got interviews from two of the seven Texas medicals schools. And I'm a resident of Texas. You can try to reason such mysteries out all you want but will never be able to resolve them. The invidual that interviewed at Baylor might not have gotten an at interview at TCOM because he showed no interest in osteopathic medicine on his app, or he just may not have seemed on paper like TCOM's brand of student. Or, quite simply, he may have killer numbers and TCOM doesn't want to waste an interview spot on him figuring he'll end up at a more prestigous school. One never knows.

Also, I agree with PACtoDOC about calling or emailing the admissions office. They are far too busy for that. It can never hurt to mail a letter expressing your particular interest in TCOM that they can get to on their own time though.

What's meant to be is meant to be.

BUmedic:

That really stinks, I wanted that invite! Thanks for the info.

I am a first year at TCOM. I have a classmate who got an interview post-match day. She had good numbers--over 30 on the MCAT. She's an oldster like me, and has a degree in film.

You will make yourselves sick and mad trying to figure out why who gets in where and why not...there is no rhyme or reason discernible to anyone but the committees themselves. Everyone has a story about people who "should" have gotten an interview based on their credentials and did not, or someone with siimilar background and numbers who did.

I will say this, however. I disagree that calling and e-mailing reduces your chances or doesn't do any good...I took the August MCAT, and when I didn't hear from TCOM after my scores were released, I wrote Jane Anderson and told her the truth, that osteopathic medicine was my first choice, and I told her why, and that I would welcome the chance to interview at TCOM. I got a call the next day. Maybe they were already planning on calling me-- I don't know. But that's how it happened.

Best of luck to you guys. Persevere. If this is what you want, it will wait for you and I honestly believe you will end up where you are meant to be.

Take care.

ps--whoever said that TCOM was the "least selective" school in Texas, I would love to see some references for that information. I wasn't aware that such things were measured.

Selectivity is a true ranking, as validated by the US news & world report. For example, Baylor is the 5th most selective school in the nation.

I'm sure its based on credential averages, number of applicants to acceptance ratio, etc.
