**The Official Columbia University Class of 2017 Interview/Acceptance Thread**

Mail: Got acceptance package, including personal handwritten notes from faculty (everyone had that).

Call: Dec 1. Don't ask what time of the day...

Email: I don't remember getting an email from Columbia.

ASSDAS Update: Don't remember if/when Columbia updated for acceptances.

Thanks for sharing! 👍

If anyone has any questions regarding Columbia, I'll be happy to answer them.

How is the area? The school, in general? Also, how liberal of a school is it, meaning open to cultural and racial diversity as well as LGBT?

The area is fine. Most of the people who live in Washington Heights are of Dominican descent, thus I believe we get a short course in Spanish right before clinic (I think). The area is actually quite safe. Like all parts of NYC, there are always streets you shouldn't be around though and that's usually not a problem. For what you get, rent is cheap if you live up here. Often, off campus housing can be cheaper and better than the dorms (Bard = college style, Towers = more like you own apartment). Not a whole lot to do in Washington Heights.

I love the school and curriculum. The faculty are very receptive to working with the students on how to improve the curriculum, which they should always be trying to do. There is currently an interim Dean and he has been doing a really good job. The new Dean should be in place around June - August (just found out). The Dean of Student and Alumni Affairs is retiring. That's unfortunate since he's awesome. Not sure what's going on as far as who his replacement is.

I think there is a lot of cultural and racial diversity at Columbia.

What schools did you get accepted into and why Columbia over the others? And if this isn't too personal, are you getting financial support to pay for school from parents or are you taking on mostly loans?

Also, I received an interview request and emailed them the day I prefer ... do you know how long it takes for them to confirm?

hey pmanning, i remember in a post a while ago, you said that at the interview, the director of admissions told you that "most of the interviewees would already be accepted before they left" if they were interviewed before 12/1. can you elaborate on this? 🙂

I think I said some like: we were told at the end of the interview that a lot of us would be accepted because they accept a "high" percentage of pre december interviewees. I can't be very accurate about any number, but a good amount of people from my interview are here now. And other people have said the same about their interviews. However, remember there are around 80 seats and around 20 students interview each Friday. I forgot how many students they interview total. So don't put all your hope on that one comment, but I think you have a good shot if you do well at your interview, and it's pre december. There are some January interviews, but I really don't know how many or any percentage accepted.

Got into a few state schools, MN, NYU. Withdrew my other interviews and a few schools I was still waiting to hear from, except UConn. NYU, the price was even higher than CU (better place to live though, IMO). MN has really nice facilities and a strong curriculum and research. Definitely a good school, but I didn't want to drag my gf there, with less options for work. I did wait on UConn though (rejected in June). As far as I know, CU, Harvard and UConn are the only schools with biomedical sciences integrated with the medical schools. All are also P/F (honors for CU, not sure about Harvard). I really liked the curriculum here and I'm glad I chose it. Some faculty were at a recent meeting with specialty program directors discussing what's going on with NBDE 1 p/f and the fact that OMFS use NBME and Ortho use GRE. It seems that at some point, the other specialties are going to either use an existing exam (NBME or GRE) or create their own. As far as NBME, we are more than prepared, and the students that took it did very well on it. The dental students' grades are comparable to the medical students' grades (higher as well sometimes).

Does anyone know how soon after the interview the Adcom sits down to discuss you?

Also, everyone seems to think that if you had a pre-Dec interview, your chances of acceptance are pretty high. Which pre-Dec applicants do you think get rejected - people who just blew the interview? Or people who had okay interviews but were not as academically qualified from the start?

Neither specifically. They look at everything. They interview well rounded applicants and they accept well rounded interviewees. They go into a room and the committee discusses each person.

Anyone's status change to "Please check back on December 3 for more information regarding your decision status with this school" ?

Mine didn't 🙁

mine changed, although I don't even want to read into it. who knows haha.

qznbabi91, does your status still say "Invited for Interview?"

Mine changed to the check back Dec. 3rd message. Not sure if it's a good thing :-/

Yes, it says "Invited for Interview" "You have been invited for an interview."

Thanks for letting me know. I don't know if its good or bad either. Ugh the suspense.

Did your Check Back message go to the bottom of your page

Yeah Columbia was 3rd on my list and now it's at the bottom with the Check Back message Dec 3 message. Doesn't sound like a great thing..

It might be a great thing...bc I already got rejected from case and case with check back status is in the middle...above invited for interview status. And I know what the check back message means for case. So I think yours would be "offer made"

I checked a post from last year seems check back means accepted or wait listed.

did you interview at case

Who knows. The sample size is small for those responding what status they have it's all speculation

Please don't read into the "check back on Dec. 3rd" status too much.. it is exactly what it says- you will receive a decision on that date. Good luck to all and enjoy yourselves this weekend !

Seems like the mobile portal is updating sooner! I had the check back message, and it says "Offer Made" on the portal! 😀 Couldn't be happier!

Woahh came on SDN today and saw that a bunch of people are "unofficially" getting accepted. I really wanna go to columbia and am applying next cycle. Can you guys please post your stats with whatever decisions you're getting? Would really help me out in seeing if I have a chance or whether I need to boost gpa/retake dat 🙂. Thanks everyone.

Me too! I'm really nervous it's a glitch LOL

yeah i'm really nervous tooo! but i read on one of the threads that someone got "waitilisted" at Columbia, but we got accepted. So hopefully that means its the real deal...

Hey guys.. if AADSAS is operating like last year, your statuses for Columbia should be updated at 8am Eastern time tomorrow, Dec. 3rd.. not 12am, just so you know what to expect 🙂

Thanks for the heads up! Here's to hoping the mobile "Offer Made" status is not some crazy mistake.

Mail: The acceptance packages will be sent out on Monday, Dec. 3rd. When you actually receive them will depend on where you are located. I think people who interviewed after thanksgiving break will have to wait until after Dec. 3rd because the admissions committee meets the week after the interview date..

Call: I got my call around noon the day my AADSAS status was updated

Email: I don't remember getting an email about being accepted, because we had a phone call and package in the mail already. You can look forward to two sweet hand-written notes from two deans.

AADSAS Update: 8am Eastern on Dec. 3rd NOT 12am.
