The Official "How Does This Schedule Look" Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
That's going to suck. Is there any way you can avoid that train wreck of a schedule?
unfortunately my school has this unwritten policy dictating that if by the end of your sophomore year you haven't finished earlier bio/biochemistry requirements for the major (general bio, chem, and physics) then you won't be allowed in the program. Kind of sucks really. Besides that I'm a year behind and I want to apply by my senior year.

That's hardcore. How is your school letting you take that many credits during summer, it's gotta be pretty expensive/time consuming.

Time consuming...not necessarily. Each summer session is only a month. For studying, yes it is time consuming. Expensive? Not even close. It's at a community college in my home state.

My school is finally letting us pick our classes, so here is what I have down so far:
General Biology I (4)
General Chemistry I (4)
General Physics I (4)
Calculus I (4)
I feel kind of dumb for taking all these freshman classes as a sophomore, but I'm a year behind the typical premed schedule...so i do what I have to.

Sorry to hear about the policy which your school has. Gen. Chem I and Gen. Biology I are a breeze though, so you should be fine. I can't comment on Physics nor Calculus since I'm taking those in the fall. 😛

Does this schedule sound too hard? It's not too many hours but all the classes are supposed to be fairly challenging.

Junior Year Fall:
-Physics 1
-Genetics
-Univariate Statistics
-Neuroscience Elective
=14 Credits

Which neuroscience class would you take between Psychopharmacology and Neurobiology of Learning & Memory?

Thanks Guys!

Neuropharmacology will probably be a lot heavier in terms of neurophysiology, it'll also probably be strongly focused on the current and cutting edge research. So I'd go with that.

Good grief, do not do this to yourself, even if you pull out with a decent gpa you'll be as crisp as a potato chip. If you need to take an extra semester, or take a summer semester, never risk completely tanking your gpa for the sake of being completely adherent to a schools 4 year plan.

I agree with everyone, that schedule is ridiculous. I know that when I took General Biology, Calculus I, and General Chemistry I, I was studying all the time just to get by...I can't imagine having to take physics then as well.

As a general rule, I think it's a good idea to limit yourself to 2-3 hard classes at a time. Any more than that and you risk really messing up your GPA 🙁

Fall 2012

Biochemistry I
Principles of Genetics
Calculus-Based Physics I
Linear Algebra

Taking the MCAT January 2013.. Any thoughts?

I think I'll drop Calculus and pick up an English class instead? Hm, but I need the calculus for the biochemistry major (specifically for P-Chem)...

4 - Physics 1
4 - Calc 2
3 - English 2
3 - Biochemistry
3 - US Gov or US History

Take Physics over the summer if you need to. Calculus will only be necessary for P-chem so you can probably opt to take calculus 1 & 2 over another summer.

You should be fine. Physics 1 is a joke (IMO-But i went to a physics heavy high school)

I think you'll have a solid balance if you are a good student.

So we're preparing to register for Summer and Fall classes in April. Here's my list for this Fall:

  • Genetics
  • Cell Bio
  • O Chem
  • O Chem lab
  • Calc II (as an elective)
Thoughts? Opinions?

  • Genetics Potentially an easy class.
  • Cell Bio Potentially a hard class

  • O Chem labTime Sink, emotionally draining
  • Calc II (as an elective) In my day electives were fun and easy classes.
Thoughts? Opinions?

Drop the calc 2 unless it's a part of your degree and it shouldn't be too bad.

Thanks for the advice serenade. I'm actually taking Calc I right now, and the professor who teaches it will be teaching Calc II in the Fall. I just thought it might be worth considering, because he's actually making the class enjoyable.

update -->

Summer:
TA for Behavioral Neuroscience
Study/Take MCAT
Statistics (Starts after MCAT test and ends before Fall semester)

Fall 2012 Senior Year:
Cellular Neuroscience
Developemental Neurobiology

I'm going into my junior year. I'm a bit behind on my courses.

Major: Health Sciences

Summer:
History I
History II
Probability and Statistics

Not expecting summer to be bad.
------------------------------------------------

Fall 2012

Organic Chemistry I + Lab (5 credits)
Human Anatomy (4 credits. Heard the lab is easy)
General Microbiology + Lab (4 credits)
Human Genetics (4 credits)
Introduction to Health Professions (2 credits)

May replace one of these with a Calculus I retake.... O-Chem is a must in this schedule.

I'm done with Gen. Ed. after History I and II, so I only have in-major science courses left. How does my schedule look?

So how does this schedule seem?

Summer 2012 (Two sessions):
1.) Physics I
2.) Physics II

Fall 2012:
1.) Biochemistry
2.) Physiological Psychology
3.) Cognitive Psychology
4.) Abnormal Psychology
5.) Social Psychology

I would like input on my schedule for next fall, as I am struggling to decide between a few classes!

Organic Chemistry + lab
Spanish
Creative Writing (for my major)
Integral Calculus OR Ecology + lab

I need to take both Calc and Ecology at some point, I'm just not sure which order would be best. I'm going to be a sophomore next year and will be taking physics my junior year. Calc is a pre-req for physics. Should I take Calc second semester so that it is fresher in my mind for physics, or does it not matter? I also want to have enough time to study. It'd be nice to get Calc out of the way and not have to worry about getting a good teacher or a good section second semester, but I also don't want to screw myself over by forgetting it all before physics.

(Oh, and my school has a limit on how many courses you can take so I can't take them both. Four classes is the maximum.)

I will also be working on campus, working as a lifeguard, volunteering at a hospital, volunteering for my school's emergency response service, and potentially TAing a cell biology lab.

Thanks so much!

If you only concern is that you will forget Calc before physics that I wouldn't stress. The basics of Calc will stick with you and will be enough to tackel physics with no qualms.

New thought: I just got an email from the physics department saying that my calculus class in high school satisfies the calculus pre-req. So I could take physics next year instead, and then take applied calculus and ecology my junior year. Is that crazy? Would physics + organic chemistry be way too much? Ahh!

Physics + Organic is pretty normal for a 2nd year. Since you only have 4 classes altogether, I'd say Physics and Organic could easily be managed.

First semester senior year:
Biochem + lab 4cr
Digital electronics (phys) 4cr
Senior seminar in biology 1cr
Fine arts 3cr
Christian Tradition 3cr
Intercultural communications 3cr

Total: 17cr

Look alright?

I am planning on attending University of Arizona for my undergrad and was wondering if this is a good schedule for a pre med student. I want to major in biology and the link is below:

http://degreesearch.arizona.edu/plan/132282

Also, will it prepare me for the MCAT? Is it too hard or do I still have free time for myself? Thanks so much! 🙂

I have the chance to take classes only 4 days out of the week. It would be awesome because I commute pretty far but I will be doing research at the same time.

Should I just suck it up and space out my classes more (do more research) or take the one day a week off to work/chill? Has anyone done this?

Looks good to me. A degree is what you make of it.

Does this look like a manageable schedule for my first semester of freshman year? The courses don't seem too bad, but I'm not sure if taking 5 courses while transitioning into college is the best idea.

BI 101 Biological Principles I
CH 113 General Chemistry I
PC 101 General Psychology
GENP 100 Critical Encounters - Philosophy
GENR 100 Critical Encounters - Religious Studies

I assume both Chem and Bio will have labs, right? I did 18 credits my first semester in college and had no problem. You will be busy, but you should be fine.

I'll be of sophomore status this summer, and unfortunately I've spent my freshman year taking ger's and bio for non-science majors!! 😡
I'm on a time crunch as I would ultimately like to take the MCAT in 2014.
My question is would replacing my summer courses with physics[algebra based] be a better choice than that currently(social sciences ger/eng)? If I don't do so, I'll have to take it simultaneously with orgo next year, Is that unmanageable?

Summer 2012
Intro Psychology [3cr]
English Composition [3cr]

Autumn 2012
gen chem 1 w/lab [4cr]
intro bio 1 w/lab [4cr]
college math(calc prereq) [4cr]
writing in social and natural sciences [3 cr]

Also does this look manageable or should I add ?

Summer:
Physics II, with lab (4)
Introductory Sociology (3)

Fall:
Orgo I, with lab (4)
Comparative Anatomy of the Vertebrates, with lab (4)
Statistics (3)
Interpersonal Communication (3)

Will be working ~20 hours a week during both semesters and attending a 2 week school for the army in between the break after summer/before fall semester. I took 3 labs this semester and kind of want to stay away from that if I can (Micro/Physics I/Chem 2).

Add a class/Drop a class/Stay with this?

I did Orgo simultaneously with Physics, it was hard at times but certainly not completely unbearable.

Why not do physics next summer (after your sophomore year) and keep this summer schedule or focus on EC's, so that way its a bit more fresh in your mind for the MCAT studying.

Physics II, with lab (4)

American Women in History 4

Cellular Bio and Physiology 4cred
Biochem of Physiology 3cred
Psych of Video Games and Entertainment 3 cred

For fall

Organic Chemistry + lab 4cr
Microbiology +lab 4cr
Physics 1 + lab 4cr

Considering the labs, does this sound like too much?

Summer:
Gen Chem III 5cr

O-Chem I + II and lab. Each section is a month. Lab runs both months.
12cr total. 4each.

Stats. 5cr

That^ or push O-chem to fall with bio and a&p, and summer leave chem 3, stats, and another class.

Fall sophomore year:

Orgo 1
Analytical Chem
Analytical Chem Lab
Cell and Development Bio
Physics 1
Intro to Econ

I was thinking about replacing cell bio with something else and taking it junior year. I want to take the MCAT after sophomore year. Thoughts?

Fall 2012 (Sophomore)
Organic Chemistry I
Honors Organismal Biology
Honors Organismal Biology Lab
Social Science of Sports
First Aid and Personal Safety
15 credits total.

Summer 2012
Volunteering/Physician Shadowing
Part-time Job

Spring
Orgo1/lab

Summer
Genetics
Physics 2/lab

Fall
Bio2😡/lab
Chem 2/lab

Winter 2013
Orgo 2/lab

Spring 2013
Biochm/lab

I'll be working f/t and momming the while time, and trying to shadow and volunteer.

Summer:
Intro Biology with lab (4 hours)
Inorganic Chemistry with lab (4 hours)
Electromagnetics (3 hours)
Research (3 hours)
Total: 14 hours

Fall:
Genetics with lab (4 hours)
Organic Chemistry 1 (3 hours)
Intro to Archaeology (4 hours)
Medical Physics Seminar 1 (1 hour)
Research (3 hours)
Total: 15 hours

The summer schedule has me a bit worried, but it should be manageable. Originally, the plan was to take electromagnetics in the fall, but the registration gods forsook me. I'll also be TAing for a heat transfer course in the fall.

I love the fact that there are 6 new schedules up here and nobody's commented on them.

People, go talk to people who go to the school you go to. See what they've done. If you're just posting because you want to share, that's great. If you want advice, random strangers won't give it well.

Perfect Schedule actually. Wish I could get stuff like that all in the same semester.😀

Thanks to my advisor, I had to change my major (for the 2nd time) apparently, i didn't have enough honors science/math classes in high school to apply for Biochemistry/Chemistry/Physics/Math major(s), but i had enough honors english/history classes. With that said he reccommended my transition to an English Lit major...so here's what I'm really taking this fall (sorry for posting so much on this thread btw):

Advanced Composition (3 credits)
British Literature I (3 credits)
American Literature I (3 credits)
General Biology I (4 credits)
Generall Chemistry I (4 credits)

Sounds decent, except why are you taking the honors version? This isn't high school, medical schools are not going to give you a weighted gpa, do not let your adviser con you into believing that they will impress anyone.

I want to complete an honors thesis and I have to complete certain honors coursework to complete a thesis.
