"Just received Hennepin County today with five days still available (two with only 1 spot)."

so are interviews pretty much all offered out?

I still havent heard from 25-35% of my programs, and haven't heard ANY news in the past 3 weeks.

I'm surprised there isn't more movement with cancellations occurring. I also still see open slots on Interview Broker for most programs. Surely there are still some offers going out, but perhaps not in enough volume to be mentioned on here.

motion in the ocean reaching past the posting threshold. Got an invite today after 3 weeks of silence.

11/28 Jacobi. ironically minutes earlier I had cancelled my USC interview because of S.O geographical constraints.

Cancelled 3 today. Hoping they go out to some of the sdn community.

Does anyone have contact information for Jacobi's EM residency program coordinator or residency director? I can't seem to find it anywhere on their website and the one on eras bounced back. Thank!

Hi folks need some advice:

my application was in somewhat late and i haven't heard from probably 50% of places...

Should I send out some emails to places i am very interested in to check on the status of my application or just let it sit?!

SIGH can't wait til this is over. thanks.

couldn't hurt. could even expedite an invite, waitlist, or rejection.

best of luck.

EMail the PD and CC the PC telling them why you wanna go there. Worked for me. at 2/3 places

ah interesting. well thanks for the responses, I would have considered emailing the PD/PC with reasons why I liked their program if I hadn't already sent the emails! but thanks anyways, congrats on the invites.

i feel like it's so hard to know if you're just annoying or if they appreciate the interest (for example: debated calling but opted for emails to be "less intrusive" so i guess we will see how it goes)...

As far as sending thank you notes go, is an email an acceptable option or do I need to handwrite notes? Do I need to send them to everyone I interviewed with or just the PD? I am only sending them to my top programs but at a couple of them I interviewed with 6 people... Thanks!

Ive been emailing thank you notes to the PD and maybe one or two if we had a good talk.

Just wanted the American IMGs out there to know that interviews are still coming...
Week of 11/19: I got Rochester. Dates available were Dec 8, 18 and Jan 5, 8, 10.
Week of 11/26: LSU Shreveport off waitlist, Allegheny General Hospital.

I noticed a Georgetown spot just opened for the 10th. I can't make that day, but i'm posting because I know a few people were waiting and it will likely lockout for that date 3 hours from now.

Has anyone heard from NYU/Bellevue recently? I was about to send them an email showing my interest when Sandy hit, have postponed sending it, but am wondering if it would be appropriate to send it now. Not sure what their current status is....

yep just interview there recently, they are definitely really far behind in sending out invites because they lost connection with ERAS for awhile. They are going to be interviewing late into January and I think they're still sending invites out. Don't think its a bad idea to email- the program coordinator said she's receiving a ton of emails everyday about this issue

Just got an invite yesterday from LSU Baton Rouge. They had two days available, Jan 16 and 23.

Received an invite to Brooklyn Hospital Center, Lincoln and NY Methodist recently. All had a few dates open in both Dec and Jan.

Yeah Bellevue has a bunch on open interviews Mondays and Fridays in January

I had a question regarding invitations and response time. If I were to be in a location without internet access for several days at a time during the second half of September, would I miss out on replying to interviews? I'm trying to plan some remote medical work, and would appreciate the advice. Thanks!

Yes.

And unfortunately, a lot of them fill up fast. I know several people who missed out on interviews based on taking some time to reply (even sometimes within several hours).

Eh, I'm not so sure about that. Looking back through this thread, there aren't many interview offers before the end of September, other than a bunch of DO programs. And I bet those people who missed out on the interviews were not in September, because programs have plenty of interview slots available at the beginning of the season.

I got about 5 within 2 weeks of ERAS opening up, 2 the Tuesday of the first week - I don't know that any of them went up on the interview thread (sorry, didn't want to entirely out myself to programs). I would make sure you're available. Also, it seems like the application/interview process is \a moving target; things could change a lot between now and next year. I would want to do everything possible to accept the first several invitations you are extended.

I got 5 invites during September, the first of which was the 21st (from my home program).

I got 4 invites in September so I second making sure you are able to respond quickly. They might not fill completely since it would be early but your choices may get limited if you wait.

I appreciate the advice all! Thanks for all the replies

is anyone doing second looks?

there is a program I'm interested in, but I can't remember a lot of specifics from the interview day/ didn't write down any residents' email addresses.

I also don't remember if the PD said anything specifically about second looks or coming back for shadowing etc.

I thought this would be a pretty benign thing as everyone there seemed chill, but now I am second guessing (after reading SDN, who would have thought?!)... is asking to come back seen negatively by some PDs?? (some posts in another thread said that some PDs view it as the applicant acting presumptively/ entitled...or something like that)

My motives are I just want to refresh some of the details about the program and get another feel. Good or bad idea to email program coordinator to see if shadowing is available, or even just hanging out with residents for a bit informally....?

What? Can you link to the thread? Every single program I've interviewed at, save one, has encouraged us to come back for second looks. Personally, if a PD saw me coming back to take a more leisurely look at a place I'll be working for 3-4 years as anything other than diligent and genuinely interested, we clearly don't mesh well. Seriously. I will be going back to see my top 3 choices that aren't where I did my away or my home program.

Yea, I have to agree. I can't imagine a second look being viewed negatively. Several have said that they would happily have students back for a second look. They are by no means mandatory, but they are at worst neutral. I plan on doing a second look at 1 program that I loved because my wife wasn't able to go on the interview and I want her to see the city.

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=491871

this is one thread i read...another one that was more discouraging to 2nd looks I couldn't find. It just concerned me when a program director was kind of discouraging them towards the bottom.

This isn't for EM however and I definitely agree that if you're planning on spending 3-4 years somewhere a second look should be welcomed, and if it's not maybe that's not a program you want to be at....

Had many PDs state that "second looks" are sort of discouraged unless you have serious questions/concerns/issues that a second look would resolve. Most state that med students think they need to go on second looks to feign extra interest in programs but apparently the match or whoever is trying to crack down on this a bit (or something like that).

I've had a few program directors who have discouraged "second looks" but welcome you to come back and shadow in the ED if you like. ie they aren't going to chat with you again and it isn't going to help your application, but if you want to see how things flow in the department, they don't really care either way.

Yup, exactly.

I've actually had multiple PD's hint that we should come back for a second look if we are interested.

Most have told us that it has no bearing on our application or our rank.

I withdrew from Emory today. Hope someone received some good news!

I think I misunderstood what people meant by "second look". I guess I (naively) didn't realize people would potentially be doing them with the intention of helping their rank position, but of course some people would try that. I can't really see a visit affecting your rank position (unless you do something weird and drop yourself down). I will be doing it solely to aid my own decision, and if a PD isn't cool with that, then we don't see eye to eye. I definitely wouldn't expect to meet with a PD (or any faculty) unless they specifically expressed interest in doing so when I set up the second look.

I'm a little confused, b/c don't 2nd looks supposed reiterate your high level of interest in the program? And don't PD want people who want to be there?

At my last interview every interviewer told me that I was interested in the program, that they HIGHLY encouraged me to return for a second look. I was like okay.... should I be reading between the lines here?

Send the PD a box of chocolates and an engagement ring if you want to show ultimate interest in the program.

:)
