Lol also Touro really isn’t the suburbs. It’s the closest residential area to outside of the city that you’ll get that is decent. The only thing closer is maybe Yonkers/Pelham... but Hawthorne and Scarsdale is much nicer.
BUFFALO is in the middle of nowhere and if you wanna talk farm country lmao... that it is.

Most towns in buffalo are connected through means on a interstate or parkway. It’s very hard to get around in buffalo if you don’t have a car or live directly in the heart of the city where things are fairly within reach. I work in the city of buffalo and if i had to live here I would be fine but to live in towns outsidw and near UB’s south campus (ie squire hall, the dental school)
It’s hard to find much open housing that’s isn’t already occupied if you don’t have a car and have to rely on living close.

Touro is in the suburbs (and basically middle of nowhere) and isn’t exactly super close to the city, why is it better than Buffalo, which is MUCH cheaper to attend?
If a school like UB was closer to NYC It would be a move and i would accept in a minute but To me cost is not a concern. I want to be comfortable and happy because there’s already a million things to stress about in dental school so why should one of them be your living situation and finances (finances that compound OUTSIDE of your tuition costs that is)

what were you extra curriculars??
But if you’re choosing between the two and don’t mind moving to either city, I would go with UB! It’s a great school but I just want to be close to home. Location for me is key

Got an interview invite this morning but will be declining. Good luck to all!
this morning? as in yesterday morning you mean right? (Friday morning)... I always wondered if these schools correspond through email on weekends lol

How long do you have to accept UB’s admission? Did you say you were waitlisted before or got accepted right away?

Hi
I have a month. I was accepted on 1/14 and I have til 2/15/19 at 5pm to submit a deposit. Yes I was waitlisted on December 7th & I was the first group to interview!!! There were a few girls I know thatinterviewwd in my group and were also waitlisted and one heard like within days of being waitlisted one waited like a week ones one waited a little longer and now I finally heard lmao. I’m almost certain UB ranks their waitlist but i think it’ll help to call and send anything that you can updsted - ie resumes, LOR’s Anything! You really have nothing to lose

Also for UB one thing I noticed is ALL my friends got that call that most people on the UB thread are talking about asking if still interested. I didn’t get that at all... i only got an email on that day. But the Friday before I had the doctor I work for submit an updated LOR and i called Matthew Blum and ask him questions about being a student - valid questions like how they deal with financial aid if I student is accepted at the very last minute & when their last interview day was if it was scheduled at all so that I could gauge more or less than I can expect to hear an acceptance based off when I interviewed. He then didn’t state specifically that the waitlist was ranked but mentioned what I just said to you that sending in updated info can only help perhaps have your applicantion be looked at earlier I’m not sure if that’s exactly what he said but what he said definitley insinusted it was ranked lol. Give it your best go!! I plan to go to Touro or NYU and am hopeful of hearing from Touro before my deposit for UB is due so I sincerely hope I can give you my spot ^.^ Good luckkkkk

Hey guys, I am from Florida and I have questions about my transition to NY, I am not sure if this is the most appropriate thread but maybe someone here can help me. Can you guys please recommend the best area to live? I would like to live by myself so I am looking for an 1bed/1bathroom apt, and since I am a girl I'd like a safer area where I could get home at night without a problem (close to school off course). Also, do I need a car in this area? I know NY has excellent public transportation but I am not sure if it works the same way in the suburbs. I live in Miami so maybe I could drive up there but only if a car is necessary. Finally, does anybody have any idea when do classes start? so I could start planning when to move. I tried to look for some of these answers on their website, but they only have info about the current academic year. Please any notes are helpful. Thank you and good luck to all of you!🙂

Can't answer these questions without knowing which schools you are speaking of.

Housing can be tricky near Touro. Finding an apartment can be very tricky (it is mostly single family homes nearby). Finding a small place just for yourself can be... very... difficult.

Transportation is not the same as the one in the city. In fact, it is terrible. As far as I know, one bus line once every hour or so. Having a car will make it much more convenient there. I lived in mid Westchester around the area of Touro for 15 years. I would not go back into it unless I am making a comfortable living and have a CAR. It's a very nice and quiet area to live without much worry about safety, but at the same time, can be very inconvenient without a car. Haven't you been there for the interview?

Yes, but I only went to the school and then took an uber back to manhattan where stayed, so I didn't have the chance to go around the area. Thank you very much for your help 🙂

Wow, that is one expensive uber ride!

In the morning
I interviewed in the evening. I don't know if that makes a difference. Do you know if other people heard back? I had a good interview experience. However, got my pre-interview email a day after I interviewed and never heard back when I sent in my thank you letter to the admissions email.

I haven't spoken to anyone else about it so I'm not sure! They didn't answer my thank you email either though I would just be patient

When I interviewed they told us that’s the last date. They said if we got waitlisted then we would head after February 13th because that’s there last date.

So they won’t accept anyone off the waitlist until February 13th is what ur saying ? Can you confirm who said this ?

I’m not sure if he was speaking about the overall waitlist. DeMaio said that if we got waitlisted we would head after that date.

I declined my offer of acceptance today. It broke my heart to do so because I did genuinely love it here. But I know I will also really love where I'm headed so I wish you all the best of luck. I will always recommend this school to future applicants.

Accepted my seat this week, excited to meet everyone

Probably been asked a million times by now but how exactly are people finding housing? I found the facebook page but I'm wondering what everyone else is using. There's also NYMC apartments but idk if we're eligible for those (also it costs 200 bucks just to apply and comes out to around 1000+ a month so I'm considering it a last resort). Haven't found anything cheaper than 800 bucks and those listings arent available either.

So should I just not trust the bus at all? I was looking for places close to a bus stop but I guess it doesn't matter

Also they mentioned that some people rent out their guest rooms for students, has anyone else heard of this? Not sure if it's something I would do but if it's mostly residential homes instead of apartment complexes maybe that would be something better to look into

Rip my wallet lol

Buses are unreliable, take forever, and aren't on a great schedule

Just sent an updated LOCI to Touro............ do y'all really think that they're gonna wait til Feb 13th until they look at the waitlist? I got into UB and have to submit a deposit by February 15th. so it's cutting suuuuuuper close. I just need some moral support lmao

In the letter you sent did you state that you are in a time crunch also UB let’s you get a tuition deposit refund if you ask for it by April 1 if that helps at all

Does anybody know what's a normal monthly rent in westchester for a 1/1 apartment? I have been looking to rent but I've seen lots of 2000 something and I am not sure if that's a normal rent for the area (so can I start internalizing it) or if they're trying to rip me off. :lame:

2000 a month for a 1 bed 1 bath is really on the higher end. Where are you looking?
You should be able to find a 1/1 in the 1400 - 1800 range.
(Welcome to lower NY!)

I have been looking on the websites in the manual the school provided, craiglist etc. But I was not sure what was normal price, that is definitely not normal where I live lol.
