My question is, for the ProctorU midterm and final, did you find those exam questions to be taken from previous quizzes and PDFs roaming the internet?

I'm wrapping up the first half of the class and my impression is that the class is much more focused on the biology than the chemistry. You need to learn the pathway, and the enzymes, and what inhibits/activates those enzymes. But you don't need to know the chemistry behind the reactions. Sometimes the lectures will briefly mention the chemistry behind a step in a pathway, but it is not at all the focus and it is not tested (at least up until this point).

You've just admitted to cheating your way through weeks 1 and 2 and are now asking for advice on cheating your way through the proctored midterm and final. This isn't meant to call you out, but I am surprised by how open people are about blatantly cheating. I'm a non-trad and I'm sure people cheated when I was in college, but it wasn't so obvious. Maybe that's just a function of the internet. Is this the new normal in college?

I think 95% of the tested info comes from the lectures, but I also think the lectures are really bad. The objectives are what you should focus on. The challenge is that the book is fairly clear, but it also provides a lot more info than what you need. The lectures are bad, but don't contain any superfluous info. I generally listen to the lecture, then take a look at the book to clarify the inevitable confusion left by the book, and then go through the lecture slowly, answering each objective.

Begining with Unit 2, I've used the whiteboard extensively. Writing out a pathway a few times is much more effective than staring at my notes or the text. Unit 1 is less pathway oriented, but I did use the white board for the section on purine/pyrimidine synthesis and degradation. Don't waste your time writing pathways in note format. Just draw them out over and over.

I have this same question/concern. Considering taking a couple necessary science courses (with labs) via UNE and have (serious) doubts about the acceptability of these courses at MD/DO schools. Did you ever get any solid responses?

Hey, I just took the midterm at did pretty well! It wasn't too bad and the questions are very similar to the quizzes, all multiple choice. I think some of the questions on the exam were straight from the quizzes actually.

Similar. Unit 4 is pretty much review of all pathways in addition to hormonal regulation of those pathways. Essentially, the final is 100% comprehensive.

I don't know the answer to that, but I'm sure your professor will answer the question for you. If I can ask you a question, though, did you ask your professor if s/he curves the grade? Some of us taking the course now have received conflicting answers.

Unfortunately, I went round and round with 3 faculty members at UNE about that. Eventually, I received a nice firm and slightly vex'd answer, stating that they recently reworked the grading scheme. Where Unit 2 and 4 exams were worth more %, and they routinely gave a 6% curve on final grades. Since they dropped the weight of the U2 and U4, they did away with the curve. This all started for Spring semester 2016. I honestly do not see how that will help students. The material is exactly the same and if the exams are taken with academic integrity, weighing them differently will not boost someone's grade by 6% overall. I would opt to be graded similar to those in 2015 and prior in order to receive a 6% boost on my final grade, if I could. I did the math and that would help me much more with my current scores. However, who am I to judge what's ethical and what isn't. Keep material the same but change the way we grade it every year.

I agree with you. You'd think with the benefit of being able to do multiple takes, they could produce a quality lecture. But every lecture is filled with long pauses and awkward sentences that barely resemble English. Then there is the splicing where one moment the audio quality is good, and the next it sounds like the microphone is next to a loud air conditioner.

With that said, I don't think the course is inherently more difficult that other bio classes that require the memorization of lots of info. The challenge here is figuring out an effective way to learn given that the lectures are so bad and the book, while clearer, contains so much info we don't need to know.

The answer is yes, but the better answer is if you're interested in specific schools give them a call to be sure before spending $2000 on the UNE physics course.

Currently taking Chem and Lab at UNE, so far so good. Although the lecture portions could include better content on the instructor's part (Rowe). I'm taking Bio and Physics at the same time from my home college. Dreading the start of Physics, but oddly enough looking forward to it. It's been a while since I dove into algebraic and trig content.

I plan on taking Bio 2 (this fall), and all the chem/orgo sequences including BioChem at UNE. Will have more input as I progress in these courses.

@Juliaf09 they don't have Ochem as an independent study option, however, they may have an online Ochem that's 5 credits each for which they may allow you to take as a Transient Student.

I haven't yet...I am thinking about exam 2...as fas as I know she emailed me back and said, "Its very similar to the original exam". But I am nervous/hesitant to take it though.

I've taken exam 2 and I can confirm that 10% is correct. For the Unit 2 exam, I spent less than 5% of my study time on Unit 1 material and I don't regret that decision at all. I asked this specific question to my professor regarding Unit 4 and he said it was the same. Units 2 - 4 are very interconnected though, so I will probably spend a little more time on Units 2 and 3, ensuring I remember the major pathways and key enzymes. It's good review for the MCAT anyway.

I was extremely worried about that, considering the study guide for Exam 4 consisted of weekly objectives. However, 95% of the material, maybe even more, came from unit 4. I think the only other 5% were those regulatory enzymes of the same pathways you've been studying anyway.

I don't know the answer, but don't take the exam until you are 100% ready. They give you all the time you need to complete the course so there is no reason to rush it. This is a tough course and if you are aiming for an A you cannot afford to carelessly lose points, especially on exams 2 and 4, each of which are worth over 25% of your grade.
