THE OFFICIAL UNE ONLINE COURSE THREAD

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I live abroad and my bio lab still hasn't arrived =(. Is it possible to move forward with the coursework/quizzes and just go back and do all the labs at once?

I am taking this course right now with Rowe and Mcmillin. I have done 2 weeks worth in 1 week. I have been able to find most questions on quizlet and other PDF's on the internet. My question is, for the ProctorU midterm and final, did you find those exam questions to be taken from previous quizzes and PDFs roaming the internet?

Hey all,

I know that there are around a hundred random threads regarding the UNE online science prerequisites for health professions, so my hope is that from now on we can use this thread to aggregate all of that info into one easy to access place.

Please, if you have a review of a course, or questions regarding individual courses, teachers, requirements, or anything informative regarding the UNE online prerequisite courses, feel free to post it all here so we don't have to go rummaging through years old information.

I would ask that if you have a review, please leave the course number and semester and year taken, so that those reading have an idea of how up to date the reviews are.

Thanks,
Best!
Karla

HI I am new to this forum I don't know how to post to everyone. I am in UNE's online med chem 2 right now. I wanted to know if you or anyone could give me feedback on the midterm and final?

Hey guys, question for those that have taken the biochem class, I haven't taken Chem in about 4 years, is this a class that I would be in over my head with if I don't feel like a have a strong foundation in chem/orgo going in to? Debating on whether or not I can push through or if I should brush up on some gen chem/orgo first. Thanks

I'm wrapping up the first half of the class and my impression is that the class is much more focused on the biology than the chemistry. You need to learn the pathway, and the enzymes, and what inhibits/activates those enzymes. But you don't need to know the chemistry behind the reactions. Sometimes the lectures will briefly mention the chemistry behind a step in a pathway, but it is not at all the focus and it is not tested (at least up until this point).

You've just admitted to cheating your way through weeks 1 and 2 and are now asking for advice on cheating your way through the proctored midterm and final. This isn't meant to call you out, but I am surprised by how open people are about blatantly cheating. I'm a non-trad and I'm sure people cheated when I was in college, but it wasn't so obvious. Maybe that's just a function of the internet. Is this the new normal in college?

Thank you, I was worried because the first few modules seem to be very heavily focused on chemistry which is where I am feeling rusty. The biology I am not so worried about. Would you say that the lectures and objectives are where this course is based around, with a bit of reading to fill in the blanks or have you been reading the entire suggested chapters? I'm just trying to figure out a best approach. Was also considering getting a white board to write out all the pathways.

I think 95% of the tested info comes from the lectures, but I also think the lectures are really bad. The objectives are what you should focus on. The challenge is that the book is fairly clear, but it also provides a lot more info than what you need. The lectures are bad, but don't contain any superfluous info. I generally listen to the lecture, then take a look at the book to clarify the inevitable confusion left by the book, and then go through the lecture slowly, answering each objective.

Begining with Unit 2, I've used the whiteboard extensively. Writing out a pathway a few times is much more effective than staring at my notes or the text. Unit 1 is less pathway oriented, but I did use the white board for the section on purine/pyrimidine synthesis and degradation. Don't waste your time writing pathways in note format. Just draw them out over and over.

So it seems that (generally speaking) many people have had a positive experience using UNE courses for grade replacement with AACOMAS... Is that more or less true? Does anyone have experience using a UNE course to replace a quarter system course?

This is why many med schools are reconsidering their position on UNE courses. Our school won't be accepting them beginning next cycle.

I'm almost done with unit 3 and Agree with every single thing AnotherLawyer has said.

Which school are you referring to? I've heard that more schools are starting to accept it, not less.

Has anyone used UNE for ALL their science prereqs and successfully made it into MD/DO school? I'm considering this route at the moment...

Sent from my iPhone using SDN mobile

I have this same question/concern. Considering taking a couple necessary science courses (with labs) via UNE and have (serious) doubts about the acceptability of these courses at MD/DO schools. Did you ever get any solid responses?

Hey, I just took the midterm at did pretty well! It wasn't too bad and the questions are very similar to the quizzes, all multiple choice. I think some of the questions on the exam were straight from the quizzes actually.

Thinking a bit taking physics I through UNE. Any input is appreciated.

How's the second half the class compared to the first? I just started Unit 3.
Similar. Unit 4 is pretty much review of all pathways in addition to hormonal regulation of those pathways. Essentially, the final is 100% comprehensive.

Has anyone taken the retaken unit 2 or unit 4 exam in Biochem.? I am thinking about retaking one of them to further improve my grade...can anyone tell me if its similar to previous exam or is it different....thank u an advance!

I don't know the answer to that, but I'm sure your professor will answer the question for you. If I can ask you a question, though, did you ask your professor if s/he curves the grade? Some of us taking the course now have received conflicting answers.

Unfortunately, I went round and round with 3 faculty members at UNE about that. Eventually, I received a nice firm and slightly vex'd answer, stating that they recently reworked the grading scheme. Where Unit 2 and 4 exams were worth more %, and they routinely gave a 6% curve on final grades. Since they dropped the weight of the U2 and U4, they did away with the curve. This all started for Spring semester 2016. I honestly do not see how that will help students. The material is exactly the same and if the exams are taken with academic integrity, weighing them differently will not boost someone's grade by 6% overall. I would opt to be graded similar to those in 2015 and prior in order to receive a 6% boost on my final grade, if I could. I did the math and that would help me much more with my current scores. However, who am I to judge what's ethical and what isn't. Keep material the same but change the way we grade it every year.

She replied with a big NO!

The only real problem that I have with this class is the lectures are horrible. Its almost like a robot is reading bullet points of a textbook. There is absolutely no excitement or enthusiasm. The text is great but very dense as to what we are actually tested on. I understand its an online course, but they might as well just hand out the script of the lectures and I can read them rather than falling asleep listening to them.

I'm thinking of taking a few courses at UNE because I don't have time to go anywhere else with the job I have now. Do most DO schools accept the online labs? I want to take physics first but I cant find any schools in my area that just offer labs in that subject.

I agree with you. You'd think with the benefit of being able to do multiple takes, they could produce a quality lecture. But every lecture is filled with long pauses and awkward sentences that barely resemble English. Then there is the splicing where one moment the audio quality is good, and the next it sounds like the microphone is next to a loud air conditioner.

With that said, I don't think the course is inherently more difficult that other bio classes that require the memorization of lots of info. The challenge here is figuring out an effective way to learn given that the lectures are so bad and the book, while clearer, contains so much info we don't need to know.

The answer is yes, but the better answer is if you're interested in specific schools give them a call to be sure before spending $2000 on the UNE physics course.

Did you retake any of the unit exam, i am thinking of retaking one of them. I would like to know if it is the same as the original one

I just found out that my credits need to be the same as where I took them in undergrad in order for them to be replaced. my organic chem and physics classes were 5 credits each at my school and I can't find any other school in the area or online that have it with 5 credits. What should I do? Do you think they will still accept it?

Currently taking Chem and Lab at UNE, so far so good. Although the lecture portions could include better content on the instructor's part (Rowe). I'm taking Bio and Physics at the same time from my home college. Dreading the start of Physics, but oddly enough looking forward to it. It's been a while since I dove into algebraic and trig content.

I plan on taking Bio 2 (this fall), and all the chem/orgo sequences including BioChem at UNE. Will have more input as I progress in these courses.

I know Oklahoma University's Chem courses are 5 credits each...in case anyone is looking for this type of course. The labs are included: http://www.ou.edu/outreach/cidl/courses/independent-study.html

@Juliaf09 they don't have Ochem as an independent study option, however, they may have an online Ochem that's 5 credits each for which they may allow you to take as a Transient Student.

What did you think of the Lecture final and Lab final? Was the lab final similar to the lab quizzes?

I haven't yet...I am thinking about exam 2...as fas as I know she emailed me back and said, "Its very similar to the original exam". But I am nervous/hesitant to take it though.

I just took Unit 4. I'm done with this class. i got a 42/50 on it and an 86.6 overall (Barely making a 3.5) and I'm completely over it. I have so much to do for my app for school, the dean of admissions said an 87% is competitive so i'm not looking at it ever again.

Not planning to go anywhere near UNE again. Just confirmed my grade with my instructor, going to finalize it and get the transcript. And get my work to pay for the whole thing. Done done done.

I'm sorry you didn't end up with the grade you wanted. If your high B is enough to get you where you want to go then don't give this course another thought. Congrats on finishing. I hope to be in your shoes soon.

Right. Not worth the extra stress. I have 10x more work to do for my app to school.

For what it's worth, the 4 exam is consistent with 2. Know your pathways, regulatory enzymes, and inhibitors/activators and you'll do well.

For exam 2 and 4 how much of the material from the previews units appears on it? Is it really only 10% like the syllabus says?

I've taken exam 2 and I can confirm that 10% is correct. For the Unit 2 exam, I spent less than 5% of my study time on Unit 1 material and I don't regret that decision at all. I asked this specific question to my professor regarding Unit 4 and he said it was the same. Units 2 - 4 are very interconnected though, so I will probably spend a little more time on Units 2 and 3, ensuring I remember the major pathways and key enzymes. It's good review for the MCAT anyway.

What did you think of the Lab final for Gen Chem II with Rowe? Harder than the lab final? Was a lot of information on the exam from the lab manual online?

I was extremely worried about that, considering the study guide for Exam 4 consisted of weekly objectives. However, 95% of the material, maybe even more, came from unit 4. I think the only other 5% were those regulatory enzymes of the same pathways you've been studying anyway.

I am taking BIOCHEM, and am not feeling confident entering my midterm. I am curious, has anybody retaken either of the proctored exams (# 2 or 4)?

Is it the same test with the questions rearranged or are there completely new questions?

I don't know the answer, but don't take the exam until you are 100% ready. They give you all the time you need to complete the course so there is no reason to rush it. This is a tough course and if you are aiming for an A you cannot afford to carelessly lose points, especially on exams 2 and 4, each of which are worth over 25% of your grade.

Does anyone know of any online organic chemistry courses that are self-paced, and that don't require proctors?
