****The Official Western University Class of 2017 Interview/Acceptance Thread***

Interesting - Did you send the update letter directly to Dr. Friedrichsen (I'd imagine this is who you mean by Dr. F?) or did you address it to the Admissions Committee and send it to the office?

Also, just an FYI, Dr. Friedrichsen said during his Q&A Session that he has no say/vote in the admissions process. Just throwing that out there, for what it's worth. Good luck though :luck: It does appear that you have been placed onto the waitlist, which is good news! 👍

Right.

I actually sent an email (not snail mail) to Dr. Friedrichsen and my admission advisor. Both of them replied to me. This is actually the second time Dr. F replied to my email. It's pretty awesome that he replied very quickly.

And yes... F stands for Friedrichsen. That's how he called himself in the emails lol.

Very cool. When I sent my update letter, I didn't think to send a copy to Dr. F. And yes, it is very awesome that he replies. I think the fantastic faculty and just the genuine interest they have in the students is what I really like most about Western (e.g. the Dean replying to student e-mails is a great example). And the California weather is a good plus.

Hopefully you will hear some good news soon. Let us know what happens! :luck:

Will do!:xf::xf::xf:

I think preDENT1210 just meant he needs something in hand as opposed to something digital, like a phone call or e-mail (since some schools do e-mail), not that he got an e-mail from Western specifically. Since preDENT is declining the acceptance, I would imagine he has acceptance(s) elsewhere (Congrats 👍) and they e-mailed.

Thanks

I also agree with this. After I interviewed with Dr.K, I emailed a thank you note and Dr. K responded with a it was nice to meet you too and hope to see you soon. Lol

I also emailed her when I was going to be in the area and wanted to tour the clinic because we didn't get to during the interview, she set me up with a tour. By the way the clinic is very nice and looks like all new dental school clinics. The only thing is you don't get your own chair and use a different chair on a daily basis.

sorry for the confusion kevinrho, i just got a phone call. and yeah cedarz4, i was referring to actually having a tangible notification 👍 . thanks!

edit: and kevin, who was your interviewer? Dr. Kim?

It's okay! No I didn't interview with Dr. Kim. Where will you be going instead of western?

AADSAS updated today. I never had it on my portal, one more step closer to it being official.

Got a call on 1/8/12, and aadsas website was updated on 1/11/12.
All faculty in school I had contact with are super nice, response time is minimal, and they really want to help with any questions we might have. I look forward to great 4 years in a settings like that.
I can't wait to get official letter.
Good luck to all.

Does anybody know if they're still sending out invites for interviews?

I'm on the alternate list. Hopefully I'll get good news after the next deposit deadline passes!!

I live 40 mins away from the school so I think I should have gotten the letter already if they mailed it out to me. This is so nerve wrecking. Western is the only school I have interviewed with so far. 🙁

That is so strange that you did not receive any kind of snail mail.
Maybe you can give them a call? Or maybe you're in the next pile of acceptances? 😀

Haha you are so nice. I hope so too then it would be dream comes true. I have been wanting to be a dentist since I was 6 years old 🙂

AHHHHHHHH!!!! I also just got a rejection email. I don't know what to do!!! This was the one school I thought I interviewed well in. Going to need a little bit to recoup but prob gonna do a masters program. Although right now I feel like jumping off a bridge

Hey hey, it'll be okay. :-/ I'm hoping the master's or post-bacc program will help you get into your top choice in the next cycle in case you have to reapply! Don't let this bring you down! Good luck!!

Rejected by email, and I never interviewed.

Oh wow dang.... You got rejected with that stats? Sorry about that... Do you think you know why is that?

Also, I think we can ask them why they make the decision they made, right? Would be nice if people who got rejected/ waitlisted could give us some info regarding that. Would probably be useful for those who are on the alternate list.

Thanks beforehand.

I think they pretty much asked us to not contact them regarding why that decision was made. I was rejected without an interview, but this was the email they sent. I thought it was kinda funny. I put those parts in bold, haha. Hopefully you'll get off the waitlist soon though!!

"Thank you for applying to the Western University of Health Sciences College of Dental Medicine. I regret to inform you that the Admissions Committee did not recommend that you be invited for an interview for the fall 2013 entering class. This should not necessarily be taken as a negative comment on your credentials. There are simply far more potentially qualified applicants than there are places in the entering class. This is true not only for Western University of Health Sciences, but for every dental school in the country.

While it is understandable that individual candidates want advice as to how to make their subsequent applications more competitive, it is very difficult to provide such advice. There are literally thousands of applicants across the country that may have strong academic backgrounds, extensive experience in dentistry, and unique personal circumstances.

In general, it is helpful to strengthen one’s academic background, especially in the hard sciences. Successful re-applicants in the past have also completed graduate programs or post-baccalaureate programs which are specifically geared to helping students achieve success in their dental school or medical school applications. Retaking the dental admissions test may also be helpful, but this is only one factor in evaluating a candidate’s application.

In the end, no one can guarantee that any particular course of action will result in successful admission to the dental school of your choice. Much depends upon the overall numbers and qualifications of future applicant pools. In recent years, the applicant pool has become even more competitive each year. As long as applicant numbers remain high, and the corresponding first-year places remain relatively stable, there will be a large number of potentially qualified applicants who will not find a place in dental school.

On behalf of the Admissions Committee, Western University of Health Sciences, and the College of Dental Medicine, I would like to thank you for your interest in our program. We wish you success in your future endeavors."

anyone know when people receive acceptances for people who recently interviewed on friday/saturday?

Thanks so much for posting the email here. By reading this, we could at least have an idea on what they might be looking for in a candidate.

The reason I was asking you about getting some explanation from them is because they literally said in the interview that we can do that. But, it probably only applies to those who went for the interview.

Nonetheless, thank you so much. I wish you much luck! ^__^

I suspect that it had something to do with taking general chemistry and physics at a community college. There was also a long gap in my education because I joined the military. I'm a very non-traditional applicant.

I live about 40min away too. I interviewed around Sept. and haven't heard anything from them yet, which I don't know if it is a good thing or bad thing. No email or mail. Western is my last hope too.

Hah thanks! Based off of your name, I'm assuming from UMich, and that's where I'm headed so far!

Which is even more surprising to me. From what I've heard, WesternU actually likes non-trad students. Hopefully, your background and experience in the military will help you get an acceptance elsewhere if it hasn't already, good luck 👍

For those who got rejected, hopefully you have received interviews somewhere else, better yet acceptances else where. If you never received an interview and got rejected. I was in your shoe two cycles ago, in fact I was denied and they sent me an email that I should think about their podiatry program. 😕 I had two interviews and was wait listed at both and eventually rejected, so that was 18 schools that I was denied from. I didn't apply the following cycle. I waited a year to get additional experience, retook my DAT, rewrote my personal statement, and I didn't do anything to improve my low gpa. Re-applied this cycle, fairly early and was offered 7 interviews and two acceptances with a high hold at another school. I know what it's like for you so hang in there. Reevaluate your application and figure out what you can do to improve your overall application. If I was able to do it, you can too.

Good luck! We will all be colleagues one day!

From what I remember at my interviews, they specifically said we don't offer the services to provide reasons why you were denied. But that's just me, I might have heard wrong. lol

You're right! haha! went there for undergrad. Awesome school, lotsa workload, but worth it! Arguably the best time of my life.

They told our group a couple times about this. So, I'm pretty sure about it haha! It was after the QnA session with Dr.F. But meh.. who knows.. I probably heard it wrong too lol.

From my experience, anytime you ask why you may have gotten rejected, I got this response ( Well, the applicant pool is very competitive - a lot of qualified applicants - ...blah ) Their usual response to strengthening your application would be ( masters, retake DAT, more experience.....) I had to apply through several application cycles, so I know how difficult it is. I'm originally from GA, and had no idea I would ever end up in CA.

For anyone that hasn't received an acceptance this cycle --- don't give up!

It really isn't uncommon for people to apply multiple times. Just keep improving and hard work will prevail!

It definitely is a set-back, (emotionally, mentally, financially). But just regroup and keep a positive attitude. This is a long and hard process, and anyone that wants it bad enough, it will happen! I'm living proof !

why haven't i received anything in the mail yet?! eagerly awaiting whether i'm on the alternate list or rejection.....live in nor cal.. no mail yet. 😡

Hello everyone. Long time lurker, first time poster here. I got my acceptance letter in the mail yesterday, and glad/relieved to finally be in after 2 applications cycles! Looking forward to meeting you all in August. For current students, can you recommend anywhere to live for the first year? Thanks.

congratulations deez, did you get a call from the dean b4 you received the acceptance letter?

Thanks! Yep, received a call last Tuesday (1/8) from Dr. Andrews and AADSAS was updated earlier this week I think.

For current students, can you recommend anywhere to live for the first year?

Congrats on your acceptance! A lot of dental students live in the Upland area - there are 3 apt complexes basically down the street from each other that are pretty nice: Broadstone Foothills, Rancho Monte Vista, and College Park. There are good places to live in Claremont, Ontario, and Rancho Cucamonga too, but I have more knowledge of these three apts.

Congratulations!! Just wondering what you think made the difference this time after applying twice before? Did you do a masters program or retake the DAT or ??

Thanks for the insight! And again - congrats!!
