Hi Everyone!
I'm currently waitlisted at OKSU and just wanted to start this post because I didn't find much OKSU-specific info on the forum. So... I just wanted to create a thread where we can share what we know about the school/admission/waitlist process so that we will be comparing apples to apples.
So as I said I'm waitlisted and they don't tell you anything as far as your rank or how many total people are on this waitlist. But last week I called anyway to try and see what I could find out, as far as spots in the class that have been filled. Well, it was too early for them to tell me that... but they were able to tell me my general place on this list, which is "closer to the top" apparently. However, they also told me not get my hopes up since the waitlist only moved 2 places last year. Of course it varies year to year.
Thats the extent of my OKSU waitlist experience. Anyone out there who is accepting admission to OKSU? Also, if any of you out there can add any OKSU admissions info or were more able to get info out of these people, please share it here! 🙂 GL to all waitlisters!

Just sharing what I know... I can't say anything about rankings on their waitlists or alternates, and frankly I'm surprised you even got "close to the top" out of Robin or Tina! Good job! Haha. I know two alternates IS, just personal friends of mine.

I'm not 100% sure the difference between alternates and waitlisters?

I recall the list not moving much in the past as well. Good luck, definitely... but I guess you shouldn't get your hopes up? That sounds so mean. Well, I got straight-up rejected, so you can just throw rocks at me if you want. 😉

If anyone here wants info on the facilities or on Stillwater, just PM me. I've lived here four years, born & raised in Oklahoma, and I work in the vet school so I know my way around. And, I'm mostly nice. 😀

I called and they said they couldn't tell me anything, not even how "close" I was to the top. I may have to try again and see what they say. From what I understand we should know around mid June whether or not we get in. A lot of the doctors at the clinic have told my chances are really high because a lot of people that do get in go elsewhere, and that the list moves quickly so I don't know. Many of the doctors got in from the wait list so it gives me hope. Who knows, if I find out more I will post it on here and I hope you do the same. Keep your fingers crossed, I am sure we will get in if not this year then next for sure.

Thanks for the encouragement! I hope the list does move fast and I won't be holding my breath all summer! 😀 You should definitely try calling again and see if they'll give you anything to go off of... I think it must depend on who answers the phone 🙂. I will definitely keep you posted on what I find out though!

ps- I am technically an alternate. I just call it waitlister. I think they are the same... 😕 but who knows.

I should've applied to OK State. My brother went there for undergrad and it's such a great school and community. Although, I don't know how good my chances would have been since they don't interview for OOS, but I guess you never know until you actually apply! Plus, I really didn't want to take another test related to the GRE, haha. If I have to re-apply for 2013, however, I think I will consider applying to OK State. 🙂

I accepted a position from OOS. Probably not good news for you, but best of luck so then maybe I will know ONE of my classmates! 🙂

Lol. Pudge, people are going to think that you're going to Ohio if you just say "OSU." Because we're not THE OSU, we're... OKSU, apparently. Oregon probably feels sad too.

Just pointing that out! (And I'm talking about the OSU Class of 2012, not the message you just wrote - I'm sure everyone knows what OSU you're talking about there. 🙂 )

Sorry for the double post, but I thought I'd point out that if any OOSers are coming to the open house, or to look for housing over the summer, I'm okay with showing you around. It's a small place though, so you could do pretty well on your own too. Just offering, since I know that I'd be keen on some help in a new area (even one the size of Stilly).

Congratulations future cowboy veterinarians!!

I'll be in Stillwater over the summer, so if anybody has any questions or needs any help drop me a line.

I would have to kindly disagree with the statement that we are not OSU...although it might cause some confusion and I appreciate your post, but I was born and raised here in OK and believe that we ARE OSU! I even went to undergrad in the big ten and would constantly talk about OSU and how OSU is Oklahoma State and not Ohio State!!

There's Oregon too for another OSU 🙂

Oh, I call it OSU too. I have some hoodies that say OSU... I'm going to undergrad at OSU... I work in the teaching hospital here at OSU... but when you say, "Hey, woo, OSU C/O 2012!!" on this forum, like 80% of people will say, "Wow, Ohio is nice!" Haha. Unless they notice where you're from.

I bleed orange too. I would just expect some confusion. 😉

I am also an alternate! Does anyone know how many applicants OKSU puts on the alternate list?

I have no clue and they won't let anyone know that, or where anyone is on the list. I called them today to ask where I was on the list and they kindly told me that they could not give me that kind of information. I was told that there is a more than 50% chance of any one wait listed person getting in though. They are so friendly at OSU though, I cannot even imagine how many phone calls they get up there asking about this kind of stuff and even still they were very nice to me on the phone and very encouraging.

Hey Biomajir and Bee,
Are yall IS or OOS? I assume they have 2 different lists. Just curious!
Yeesh! I'm practically having a melt down with not being able to know ANYTHING! It makes it very hard mentally to get used to a big change such as moving OOS to a place I've never been before vs. staying here in my familiar little world for 1 more year.
I hope we all get in so I will kinda know at least a few people!
GL yall just 2 weeks away!

I am OOS from FL. I also called today to see if I could get any information about the list but no luck.

I am in state. I kinda hope they have two different lists. I am such a nervous wreck, especially this semester. I am taking physics II which is my last pre req class and I just don't think I am going to do very well. It is so upsetting to think that I may not get in this year, but we will see.

They do have 2 separate lists for IS and OOS. The OOS list tends to move faster than the IS list, so I am told.
🙂

I recieved an email from OKSU after reviewing my file to tell me what I could strengthen for next year.

They told me my GRE scores were competitive but I should consider retaking a few classes. Gen Chem I, Orgo I & II and Physics II.

I'm enrolling in one each semester to see where that gets me. I can only take 2 courses before the next app cycle, but I guess I need to start somewhere. I hope you guys/gals on the waitlists get in! :luck:

Philo, I hope I am not being too bold, but I was wondering if you would share with us the grades you received in those classes that OKSU suggested you should retake. I am considering OKSU in few years when I apply (grew up in oklahoma and LOVE it there!) and need all the help I can get from people that have applied there. Thanks!

I'll share even though you didn't ask - I've made a C in every chemistry class I took besides biochem. That, plus a D-B average in Physics II (makes a C) my GPA is sub-par. (I hate that OKSU averages re-take grades!) GREs were average, but the averages overall are lower for OKSU. Also, remember you'll need the Biology GRE as well. I got an interview in-state, but no acceptance. OOS stats would need to be a bit higher, and I'm sure they like LA experience/interest.

Philo, do you know if there's anywhere you could take an all-in-one Organic? That would save you from having to retake both I and II, and I think it averages the same? I think I'll go ahead and ask Robin that, since I'm thinking of doing the same thing. I took orgo like this: Orgo I, 3 credit hours. Orgo II, 3 credit hours, then Orgo Lab, 2 credit hours. But they offer another course here that's Orgo I/II/Lab combo, 5 credit hours. If those 5 could replace the 8 from before, that's a great deal. Maybe an option for you if there's something similar. I'll email her about that right now, and tell you guys what she says.

I got a C in those 4 courses. Do you know how wierd it is to teach at the community college, and go knock on your neighbor's office door down the hall and ask for an override?? We know each other from working togther for the last 8 years, and she laughs at me (in a meaningful way, I'm sure) and then grants it. I'm a lot more studious now of course than I was 15 yrs ago.

She's the toughest prof on all 6 campuses, but it's the only one that will fit into my schedule. And yes, they average them out. If I have to retake all these classes, it would be easier to switch identites, get a new social secuirty number and be on my way. 🙂 I'm kidding of course.....maybe 😉

I signed up for Orgo I this fall. Urgh. All this time, and a buttload of extra money and still no guarantees. But I'm hard headed enough to do it anyway.

Good luck, and I'll still let you know what she said when she replies. Are you moving to Georgia? JW. I remember you mentioning that.

And to all you pontential future Oklahomans! You know how the song goes, "Ooooooklahoma where the wind comes sweeping down the plains..."? Well, they weren't lying. A redbud tree just blew over in my backyard. Fair warning!

Robin said that everything always just averages. So however many hours of C averaged with however many hours of A... still makes a B. Except since I have 8 hours of C and could get 5 of A, that'd be slightly less than a B. AWESOME! FYI, KSU takes retake grades without averaging - they just replace.

Hey everyone!

I m new at this forum stuff but I wanted to start talking to everyone who has been accepted into OSU because were supposed to start classes by August 18th so really just a few months to uproot my life! We're supposed to receive our packets early June but I didn't know if anyone had any suggestions on living arrangements (dorm vs. house vs. apt) and where to live in Stillwater etc. I'm in a marine mammal internship here in Hawaii until the end of May then by mid-June I'm headed back to California and starting to move out to Oklahoma. What is everyone else planning? When is everyone moving out there (unless you're from OK)? I really want to meet everyone, I am SOOOO excited! 🙂 Contact me any which way, I am on myspace almost every day! Any help would be appreciated!

Vet students don't really live in dorms here. I *think* they can, but they don't. Probably for good reason. Houses are relatively cheap, if you're up for that, and there are always houses and duplexes to rent, though often with roommates. There are also apartments, but those are limited by if they allow pets, and of what size (not too many allow really big dogs, sadly). The cost of living is good, esp. after California. Stillwater is a small town.

I'm happy to answer any other questions, just PM me. 🙂

I've got a large Rottie mix, so I think I'll be renting in a house. (If I get in off the waitlist of course) I'm pretty excited about the prospect of possibly having a house all to myself and it looks like I can afford it there. Stilly's cost of living is awesome after living in Austin 20 yrs! Of course Austin's COL is nothing compared to CA.

So wow! Everyone hold on to their hats! The 15th is coming around fast! I just hoped that if I get called, I get called early! Like Tuesday would be nice!

I emailed Robin Wilson about updates for alternates and she said they are going to start calling people tomorrow!!!
:luck: Good luck everyone on the alternate list!

I wasn't told this when I called, and I called on 4/17... They said OOS alternates would be recieving calls within the next couple of weeks. Any news would be appreciated!

Do they do IS alternates before OOS alternates?

Starting to get nervous, it's been a week since the 15th...

:scared:

I called yesterday (4/21) and they said they would start calling alternates this week!

Thanks for the update, Bee! I hope we're at the top of their list... 👍

Well, I got my call of admission yesterday! I'm going to send in my acceptance form and deposit tomorrow morning! I was soooo excited that someone wants me I nearly cried!
When I called Friday they said that they were just waiting to get some responses back from waitlisters and that I should call back Wed (today) to check again, so I can't figure out why they're telling people different stuff. But anyway they're definitely calling OOS students now. So never fear! I'm sure yall will be coming up on the list and getting calls in no time. I'd love to know at least a few people going in. Good luck!

Sorry for the double post... but I thought you guys might like to know this. I recently discovered that when I was told that I was "closer to the top" on the waitlist, I was speaking with Dr. Meinkoth. So... try to call her office or something and get ahold of her. She's really nice and likes to give people hints apparently. (I didn't even have to ask her to tell me my relative place on the list... she just offered it!)

It sure does take a looooonnngggggg time sometimes to get a decision out of some schools. It has been 7 months after all since my app went through. Sure wish they would call.

and from what people say, they sure do tell people a wide variety of things when they call...

There were quite a few in my first year that lived in dorms (apartment style) the first year but I think most if not all moved off campus the next year. Living off campus is definitely the way to go. There's even quite a few houses that are within walking distance, at least four that I know of that are currently up for rent.

There is quite a bit of housing options unless you happen to have three inside dogs and a cat. I can't tell you how many people laughed at me when I told them how many pets I had and then they said, "well, I don't think we'll allow that." There's some three bedrooms that allow it, but I'd have to get another roommate to help cover the rent. *sigh* The turmoils of a poor vet student. 😛

Yeah, having pets is a bit of an issue in this town. Many places have a 40 lb weight limit, or even a 25 lb limit. Many don't allow more than one or two. After finals week I can probably make a list of apartments here & what they allow/don't allow. The houses that are for rent, well you'd just have to come look. Try and come find something by July, as I'd imagine it gets tight in August. If you're looking at buying, or just want an idea what houses for sale are like here in Stilly, try browsing this site:

www.welovesellingstillwater.com

There are other realtors here of course, you can look at Century 21, Grindstaff, Dolores Lemon & Assoc., uhh... Heritage? I'm forgetting someone. Well, the site is a good start at any rate.

Also, local renters/property management companies include CStar, CCD, Benchmark, Vantage, Milestone... all good for Google searches.

Edit: Tell me this isn't the cutest damn house for $99k!

I'm actually in Stillwater currently (2nd year vet student). I'm renting through C-Star right now but the owner of the house is a flaming idiot. Our lease is up at the end of May. The bad thing about C-Star is they have a $200/pet non-refundable fee. That would be $800 for me! Yikes. It's okay if I'm living somewhere long term like I was planning here, but if it's just for a year, that's a huge lump of money. Amsco is $15/pet per month, so an additional $60/month tacked onto any place I rent from them. Milestone only allows 2 pets, CCD doesn't have anything available that would work, and similar stories with the rest.

There's no way I could afford to buy. I was looking at trailers for $6-12,000 but that's still out of my budget. Right now I'm looking at houses for rent by their owner since the rental companies aren't working out. But that means lots of driving around looking for signs and checking the newpress daily. But, ummmm, yeah, that's my long winded rant about all that.

Oh and don't anyone ever rent from Stillwater Property!!! 👎 They are bad, bad news, stay far away!!

I'm in Stillwater too, just undergrad and not vet student. Been here since my first day of freshman year! So that's nearly four years. I don't know a lot about renting though - I lived in dorms and then we did The Links (no pets!) and now I live in a house with my hubby. You know, in case anyone wondered if I was qualified to be giving out advice!

My "never do this" thing would be... never rent at The Reserve. They don't allow pets anyway. But it's like, party central. And as an example of the high caliber people who tend to live there: it snowed a lot once, and instead of building snowmen like my neighbors at The Links, the lovely boys of The Reserve built five giant... appendages... each trying to make theirs larger than the last. BOYS. Ridiculous.

Anybody of any news on the alternate situation? 😕

So.. I called again today and was told that I was currently near the top of the list but they didn't know if they were going to get to me because they have already made most of the calls. She said that she was just waiting to hear back from a couple of alternates that she had already called. She said that they didn't have to call a lot of alternates this year🙁. Everyone that I have talked to has been really nice, so you might just want to call and see what your chances are like. I hope this helps!

I didn't mean to make it seem like you weren't qualified to give out advice. It's just been a big frustration so I tend to go on rants about it. 😛

College boys ... ugh. Sometimes I wish vet school could not be in a college town.

Sorry to hear that the waitlist isn't moving much. This really suprises me because I know my year of applying it moved a lot! That's the only way I got in.

Stillllllllll waaaaitttttiinnnngggggggg .... ugh

I just wanted to thank everybody for actually "gathering" here and all the posts! I hope its helped to relieve some of the waitlist anguish by venting and info sharing. (I know its helped me t)
Waitlisters: hang in there! You never know how many of those people that they are waiting to hear from are already accepted elsewhere and just kept their names on the OSU waitlist. Its not uncommon to hear from a school well into the summer. So don't worry yet!

Congrats slainte and others! Good luck to those still waitlisted. Let me know if you're planning a visit. I know someone who's selling a nice house for <100k! I'm still going to make a list of apartment complexes - my last final is Thursday. Or, PM me your address and I can mail you a copy of the college paper, it has lots of ads for stuff in the classefieds.

Anyone have any updates or have heard anything about the status of the waitlist yet?

Katrina came into the lab today while I was doing pees and I inquired about the situation of the OOS waitlist. She said that they only had one more person left to call.

That's probably not the best news. I'm sorry. 🙁

I didn't ask about IS since someone on the waitlist was in the room, but I'm doubting that it will move much beyond this point either. I think the class is pretty much filled, so unless someone drops out and leaves their deposit, there shouldn't be much more movement.
