America: The New Texas

I've decided that there are a few too many "Whoops" going on this morning. (Yes, I know this has to do with the A&M acceptances that seem to have come out today...)

But anyways:

Hhhhhheeeeeeeyyyyyyyyyyyyy
SIC 'EM BEARS!!!!!!!!!!!

Haha sorry I don't have anything very productive to update. Oh, except that I got a 12/18/2007 Last RCW update and Validation Date. Go on skeptics, start hypothesizing about what that means...

nothing from A&M...does this mean there's no hope there until after match? man, i think i'm going to lose my sanity...i can't even eat properly nowadays and have dreams about acceptances to schools i didn't even interview at...

Status quo...no love.

if we have a notes service, I did not know about it. We do have awesome syllabi that the profs put together with pretty much everything we need to know, but I don't think we have a notes service (I think San Antonio does though).

Sorry, I stand corrected 🙁. I think I confused Houston w/ UTMB. But I can guarantee that if there is a need for a note-taking service, I will start it if I go to UTHSC!

And btw, is anyone else finding themselves afflicted with a serious case of Senioritis? I was originally going to take enrichment classes next semester because I'm done with my degree, but at this point, I don't even want to get up in the morning anymore 😎. Plus tuition is super expensive. Do you guys think it will look bad if I just withdraw next semester (esp to Houston)?

I wouldn't give up hope for a pre-match offer yet. Last week I spoke with Filo and he told me to be patient as its early and the offers don't end until the end of the month.👍 But hey I had dreams about those non-existent schools as well!

Hey CalicoCat,

Yeah, i've been finding ways to kill time at work too. Everytime I seen a new mail in my inbox my heart starts racing and all kind of thoughts flash through my head. After taking a deep breath I click on the inbox to see what the mail is only to set myself up for failure .... This has been my life for the past few days as we are wrapping up pre-match offer days. ::Sigh::

Gosh it all sounds so familiar...

I'm sure that e-mail will come when you least expect it - but how is it possible to check e-mail without expectations?

I just want to be able to relax and get some work done without worrying about if I will get in this year. All the work it has taken, all the anxiety, and all the darn waiting have made me neurotic!! I'll probably be able to make it to Feb 1st, but not without some sleepless nights... and I like to sleep. (Or I'm grouchy in the morning!) I just wish A&M will be as impressed with me as I was with them. This lamentation reminds me of Princess's song that she wrote to UTHSCSA!

Please Filo, show Mo, PT, Ashley and me some love! (And of course anyone else I've forgotten)

Does anyone remember the discussion about how A&M scored interviewees? Or at least how many threads back that was?

MullieWins wrote a post about it a while back...If I remember correctly, your interview is scored 1-10 and 10 = accept, 8-9 = further review, <8 = no acceptance. What I'm unclear about is whether this score is from an average of the 2 interviews or the highest score or something else.

Hey tk, when did you interview?

Also, this is an issue that has come up a few time only to be forgotten a few minutes later. But when I was at the A&M interview, one of the staff told us that sometimes schools call other schools to let them know they are extending an offer to a certain student. I have no idea what the conversation was about, but what's the deal with that?

Like can UTH call A&M and say Tech and tell them that we're gonna send an offer to Mr. John Doe, and then A&M and Tech (seeing that John lives in H-town) think that John will stick with UTH anyways and don't go through the trouble of sending him an invite, even though they may like him as well.

Also, do you think schools sometimes look at a students file and say "Oh, i'm sure he/she will get in somewhere better than here, let's not bother with him/her (it's not like he/she will come here anyways)?"

Just some thoughts I had on my tiny mind.

yea . ..

Jolie, has your snake-killer hubby heard anything from Rice? I hope you get in at Houston, I hope I get in at Houston - heck I hope I get anywhere...

No, we need to save up $200 cash before we can get his documents sent from Cameroon to Rice. Hopefully, we'll do it in the next couple of weeks. What's really cool is that he got a call from another professor (unsolicited) who is also willing to support his candidacy!

He did however submit all his stuff to UPenn. Philadelphia is our second choice city.

At the end of all this, we will have paid $400 to ship 20 pages of paper. 👎

Wow, that's incredible! At $20 per page, that paper better be worth it! It's great that he heard from the other other professor. I hope that you both get to go to school in Houston!

This is completely unrelated to anything, but I had to tell someone.

Britney's 16 year old sister is pregnant. Whoa!

Must be genetic... or just plain irresponsible. I shouldn't judge though, she might end up being a much better parent than her sister.

I believe without a doubt that schools do communicate amongst one another, especially in Texas. Of course this is pure speculation, but I do think that if a school wants John Doe and John Doe interviewed there and told interviewer " U of _ Med School, you are my #1 choice", that the school may notify other institutions of their offer... It is then up to school B whether to call school A's bluff and send an offer regardless, or to heed their advice and offer to another desired student.

The whole process seems disturbingly familiar to greek rush

I'm sure some will disagree but I think the schools communicate to a certain degree. Otherwise they would not be so efficient (relatively speaking after last year) at filling their classes through pre-match offers.

Yeah, i'm sure they communicate to a certain extent, but do they also "assume" that another school will give Mr. X an offer which he will accept, and therefore withold an acceptance from their own school to that person?

Dueling Banjos, anyone?:meanie:

Jolie, what did you do in the PC? I used to daydream about canoeing down the Amazon as a Dr, dispensing "magic" from my black bag to the natives...haha. Hopefully when I'm all done I'll get to do something in the ballpark.

You guys gotta relax a little...good time to pick up a hobby. So 'Mo, is Calicocat as hot as her avatar? Hmmm?

I did a lot of cool stuff. My main projects were:

*working with a group of village women to plan activities, budget money, work through projects. we constructed 2 latrines, a well, and a kitchen. we also organized sewing classes for young muslim girls, which sounds stupid but is important because the girls now have a way to gain a little bit of financial freedom from the things that they sew and sell in the market.

*health outreach treks to villages in the bush only accessible on foot. we brought a doctor, a lab tech, and translators and collected stool samples. then, we gave out whatever treatment was necessary for the parasites that they tested positive for.

*acting as a "technical assistant" to a fairly large malaria control project. we mostly tried to empower people through education and by helping them to gain stocks of insecticides and artemisinin based combination therapy drugs.

obviously, i took on a lot of little projects too and life in general over there was an adventure.

I would actually like to go back to help train the healthcare providers over there. they have zero confidentiality, no sense of compassion, and most don't know how to correctly treat malaria. 😱

Wow, didn't know ya'll had such flexibility in what to get done...nice. How large was the village? Is Cameroon Muslim in N and Christian in S like Nigeria? How'd you like the rainy/dry season deal? Any peculiar local habits to share?

Were people pretty enthusiastic about your work, or did you find yourself channeling Richard Simmons alot? And of course, what was the 1st thing you did when you got back?

Yea, you pretty much get to choose the projects that you want to work on. I mean your primary project should be something that the village needs/wants, but for secondary projects you can kinda do what you want.

I lived in 2 different villages: the first was very rural and isolated. The population was ~3000. The second was much larger and more diverse ethnically with a population of ~18000.

Cameroon is divided into the Muslim North and predominantly Christian South. However, there is no conflict between the two. People are pretty tolerant.

As far as the "rainy" season goes, Cameroon has different weather patterns depending on the region you live in. In the East, there is rain forest. The south is humid highlands. The west is mountainous and has beaches. I lived in the north primarily and my first village was in the savanna. My second village was further north (closer to the sahara) and was more arid and desert-y. The rain kinda sucked at my first post cause the roads went to crap for about half the year. My second post had little rain and was ridiculously hot and dry.

There are lots of weird cultural things, I'm sure, but it's hard for me to know what is weird because i just got used to it. 😎 Something I never got used to was being a celebrity of sorts. I could never blend in.

As far as people being into my work, it was an uphill battle most of the time, but by the time I left people started realizing that I was onto something. Hopefully, my successor will have more success as a result.

When I got back, what struck me most was the variety and also how "easy" everything was. I would stand in front of the toothpaste aisle for like 20 minutes in awe of the choices. It was amazing how going to the bank only took like 5 minutes.

The thing that I missed most was Mexican food, so as soon as I got back I hit up my favorite restaurant for queso and margaritas.

BTW, sorry for the long post.

Hey everyone, I just got back from an interview at Tech, my second of two interviews. (and probably last unless I need to re-apply) My other interview was at San Antonio, and I thought both had pretty comparable strengths and weaknesses based just on my visit, so I'm currently undecided about which one to pref for the match. Does anyone know what the reputation of the two schools are? Which one is considered "stronger"? (whatever that means) Which one do I have a better shot for? And which one has a reputation for filling their class mostly through the match?

Thanks!

Very odd that A&M sent out acceptances today. Filo told me personally that they were meeting on Monday and Tuesday to go over all applicants, and then release acceptances Thursday or Friday. He made it a point to emphasize that it would be later in the week. This will be the last round of pre-match offers -- just not sure if it has already been sent out or not.

To be honest I really do think today was just another trickle. The final batch, I believe, is yet to come. (I also received the email around 9 which isn't normal for this year.)

Wish you and all else the Best of Luck!!

Anyone intrepid enough to call A&M tomorrow? I think I'll give it a shot first thing tomorrow and report back.

That's awesome that they don't seem finished with holiday cheer, but next week is Christmas and at my interview, they were pretty adamant about not coming in to work then. Hopefully lots of good news on Friday 😀

Yay I got UTMB!

Congrats, didn't know they are still giving out prematch at UTMB.

Yeah, I call this morning, I was told that same thing: More acceptances will be give out end of this week. So i'm really hoping it was a trickle today and that the bulk is tomorrow or friday. C'mon A&M, gimme so love!

It would be freaking awesome to get an acceptance right before christams! I hope these schools send out something good in the next couple days :luck:
