low blow...🙁

I'm sure that no matter what happens to me for the duration of my life, the memory of being at the 2005 Rose Bowl National Championship game will continue to keep a smile on my face. Light that tower up one more time!

UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN CLASS OF 2007 :horns: HOOK'EM!

Was that a utmb acceptance today?

No, actually it was on Wednesday afternoon around 2 pm. I just haven't been on SDN, but I needed to celebrate somewhere...haha sad.

CONGRATS BUBOT!!! THat's awesome. Hope you have a great Christmas!

Thanks you too BUdoc! I forget which one you are... you guys should change your names up more.

CONGRATS!!! It was nice to finally meet a fellow Bear/SDNer the other day!

Thanks and it was nice meeting you too! Merry Christmas!

Considering 10% of your football team got arrested this year, it should be something more like BOOK 'EM horns

38-30

Sean. Read any good newsletters lately? 😉

WHOOP!

And I'm TOTALLY going to the Alamo Bowl too! double WHOOP!

Yea, you pretty much get to choose the projects that you want to work on. I mean your primary project should be something that the village needs/wants, but for secondary projects you can kinda do what you want.

There are lots of weird cultural things, I'm sure, but it's hard for me to know what is weird because i just got used to it. 😎 Something I never got used to was being a celebrity of sorts. I could never blend in.

What passes for popular culinary fare in rural Cameroon? Did you work closely with the local government, or was it mainly a private sector affair?

Reminds me of my sister. She is pale, with red hair/blue eyes. When she went to China (Xian), people would gather around and ask to touch her hair.

How deep did you guys go with the wells? With malaria being a problem, did how common is sickle cell? Haha, when you get back, does PC run you through a physical, etc in case you're harboring anything nasty?

The staple of the diet in the north part of cameroon is called fufu. They essentially take flour (corn, millet, or cassava depending on the region) and add it to boiling water until it becomes the consistency of dough. Then they eat it with a sauce which can also vary from region to region. The sauce must have meat or fish otherwise it's no good. For Muslims, the meat must be slaughtered by a Muslim, so it's usually beef but can be goat, chicken or lamb. For Christians, if it has meat and can be eaten, it will be. I personally ate python, civet, and some other animals that were unidentifiable to me. Okra, tomato, and indigenous leaves are common main ingredients of the sauces.

I was technically posted under the ministry of health, but did little with them at my first post. At my second post, I worked with an NGO, but we collaborated with local government health centers and higherups at the ministry. The vast majority of hospitals are government owned and operated and healthcare providers are required to do education/public health work as well.

Yea, except that it's more than that. people would always want to come to my house, talk to me on the street, gouge me for prices, want to know my business. You know how we have celebrity gossip here, well I was the celebrity and all the minutiae of my life was public. Like if I went to the bar one night, the next day people at my work would be like "oh so we heard you drank a beer at the bar last night." everyone would know.

For the wells, it depends highly on the water table. Where we built them, it was fairly high so I believe we went down 15 meters. I can't remember exactly, but it was done by hand. One man dug the hole with what amounts to a crow bar and a bucket.

Sickle cell, I'm not sure about. You have to realize how ill-equipped health centers are over there for diagnostics. I mean in my first village there was no electricity so all they had in the lab was a hand crank centrifuge and a microscope with a mirror. They did have pregnancy tests, HIV, and syphilis test kits, but that was it. Outside of this, there were severe limitations. I remember talking to a doctor there one time and he told me that he saw a case of cervical cancer with no light and only his naked eye. I just remember being horrified at how serious things became before diagnosis.

Before you leave PC, they do this huge comprehensive physical. I mean they do everything. You have to give 3 stool samples for parasite testing, get a pap if you're a woman, get blood testing done for HIV and other bizarre things (can't remember what right now), give a urine sample, and then they make you go to the dentist. You have to take primaquine too to kill any liver stage Plasmodium that you might be harboring.

If anything comes back positive, they give you a voucher to get it checked out here.

Haha I enjoyed this comeback, PT...

And ALL OF YOU have NO ROOM TO TALK: What about those BAYLOR BEARS?!!?!?? EIGHT CONSECUTIVE TRIPS TO THE TOILET BOWL! Sic 'Em!

I think the real question is why are these individuals throwing their lives away and committing crimes? People don't ever realize how good they've got it. . .😕

. . .but yes, UT FTW!

Nothing from A&M today? I tried calling a couple of times this morning, but nobody answered.

Nothing from A&M today? I tried calling a couple of times this morning, but nobody answered.

I'm really surprised A&M sent anything yesterday. Virtually the entire staff was at Round the Wards in Temple. They didn't say anything about forthcoming offers, however...

Just called San Antonio. They said another batch of acceptances would be going out between now and the 31st, but she didn't know when, or who, or how many.

She did tell me to have a Merry Christmas...little did she know how directly she could make that happen!!!😉

I'm not sure if all these rumors are helping or making things worse. Anytime all the murmuring starts my neurotic email checking is driven into overdrive. As we speak I'm sitting in the bushes on my blackberry getting ready to spring on the mailman! I may take him hostage if he doesn't have good news for me.

Trust me, I know the feeling. Mine came just as I finished my last post, and I practically threw my laptop to the floor to run out the door. A couple of Christmas cards, two bills, two credit card offers. 🙁

Yeah I just got a bunch of a junk as well! And deceptively large white envelope that sent my heart through my chest and turned out to be a credit offer. Screw American Express!

Nothing here, but again, i'd be the last person they would want to email anyways. 🙁

They told us for sure that some offers (30-50) would go out before Dec.31st. And seeing how their staff is leaving on the 21st i'd say they would have to get them out today or tomorrow. God please have them send me an offer, pretty please! I'll be super nice. 🙂

I was there too! Definitely one of the highlights of my undergrad experience 😀

So, how was the python? Did you get sick with anything besides the usual GI stuff? Were there other PCV's in the vicintiy? Does the PC do a good job of supporting you in the field/do you have a certain budget to work with?

Lol, were you able to parlay this celebrity into say....getting your projects featured in what passes for the local media? Do you miss being a celeb, or are ya glad you've got your privacy back? I sure hope you guys bought that well digger(s) a beer🙂.

If you go back as a Dr, would go through PC or do you think other org's are better suited for Doc's? Interesting that you brought up compassion. How do think you can bring that out of people?

You should pick up a copy of last month's Texas Monthly. One of the featured articles has interviews with members of the last Aggie national championship team. Needless to say, all the guys were about 90 years old. That should tell you something.

Python is good. It's kinda like a mixture of chicken and fish.

I got E. histolytica 3 times. BIG 👎 I also got falciparum malaria. Then, a couple of months before I left, I got into a motorcycle accident in the bush and had to have surgery to remove gravel that got stuck in my arm.

Were there other PCV's in the vicintiy? Does the PC do a good job of supporting you in the field/do you have a certain budget to work with?
PCVs usually are alone at their post, but you can meet up with friends in your provinicial capital when you do your banking.

In the field, it's pretty much up to you to make stuff happen. I mean you can call your supervisor if you have major work problems, but for the most part you have to take care of your own business. There is zero budget for anything. People usually raise money in the village or use a program where your relatives can donate money to your projects.

Um, no. Your "celebrity" is only good for making you the village laughingstock and raising prices on everything that you want to buy.

No, I don't miss it at all. Also, there is a small minority over there that straight up hate white people and can get pretty in your face about it. Encountering those fools was fun. 😎

I sure hope you guys bought that well digger(s) a beer🙂.

He didn't drink, so there was no need. He also made pretty decent money off the gig.

PC doesn't recruit or employ doctors except to treat other volunteers. If I was to go back, I would just go to my husband's village and work pro bono for a stint. His uncle is the tribal chief and congressman for that area so he'd help me hook it up.

I think as far as the compassion goes, that's not something that they are ever taught or instructed on. Education over there discourages original thought and creativity, so unless someone told them to think about it they wouldn't. That might sound insulting, but it's true. They don't write papers or do art or anything that we encourage kids to do to be creative. I think that takes a toll at all levels and people never venture out of their box to think how others live their lives. They don't ever really try to think about how others might be feeling.

I think it's just a matter of doing trainings on that and counseling techniques.

WOW, sounds like ...... fun .... to say the least. Bet you had a kickass PS. 😉

So I got in contact with A&M. They said that prematches were sent out Monday and that they don't expect any more 🙁. This is contradictory to what we know (that they were sent Wednesday and people were told there may be more). I don't know what to believe.

It's possible they're just sick of people calling them...

Thanks for the update..I wish there was some consistency in what is being said 🙁

yeah i just called and was told the same thing. it's strange how i was told yesterday that more offers would be going out this week and told the exact opposite today. so that's that. she said no one got in through the match last year. if anything now, our chances lie with the alternate list (which comes into play if the class doesn't fill or if someone switches/drops out after match).

What the hell??? That doesn't make sense at all. From the day at the Interview until yesterday they kept saying late last week or early this week. Now all of a sudden it's reversed?

What if they realized not as many people turned down their offers and so they decided to not make a last round of offers. Which basically means anybody who interviewed at the end of November and in December went through all that effort for nothing. Man, that does not make me happy at all. 😡

i agree with you cyclingmo.

also, i just called tech and they said that their last round of pre-match offers will be sent out tomorrow, and that some people will also get in through the match.

Yeah it does suck for us late interviewers. IMO this process could be fairer. For all the early interviewees, they gave out about 250 acceptances. The later ones (the last 3 dates), less than 30-50, since the earlier interviewees are still under consideration. Man, the old match process seems better. Oh well, tomorrow's a new day.

Man, whatever .... I don't even know what to say anymore.

Yeah, All I have to say is :bullcrap: and all I want to do is :beat: and this is how I feel +pity+

yeah...although i'm not a late interviewer at A&M...i still feel like s**t...

What's the point of flippin match day if no can get accepted through it and plus all this contradictory statements are driving all of us insane. I kind of feel like a crack addict when I desperately go searching through my mail and emails.:scared: It's all I think about from morning until night time and I guess what I dream about...😱

Doesn't make much sense at all. I do not think any pre-match offers were sent out on Monday. But we have a person that got in on Wednesday, and we were all told later this week. Pretty ****ty...

So here's a surprise... I have an invitation to interview with UT Houston in early Jan. I didn't think that anyone was still interviewing...but, there you are.

So the question...do I take it? I have acceptances to both of my top choices (UTSW and Tech's MD/MBA), and Houston is way way out of the way.

Somebody convince me to take it. Or turn it down.

I guess the question is if you actually see yourself going there if accepted. If not I'm sure someone else would be extremely grateful to get your interview spot there.

if you think you might like to go there, take it. UTH has room in the match. And why not go to try because you could see something you love about it.

or if you're forever in love with the schools you're in at and you're just sure nothing could pull you away, decline the interview and maybe someone else can get the spot.

I got a crazy late interview last year and I still went just because you really don't know much about the school til you interview (even then you only know so much, but you know WAY more than you did!)

Oh... and it will be CRAZY low stress because you know you're already in!

Speaking of houston, I'm interviewing early jan and kind of wondering how they'll deal with an out of stater that close to the match? Anyone have any info on their admissions stuff regarding this?

If it ain't too late, ask for an iPod for Christmas. I just bought Netter's anatomy flashcards for the iPod and it's awesome. No more cluttered cards all over the place. The future is now.

You know something, that is interesting. Especially in light of our victory at your house when y'all were the defending national champions. It tells me this, that no matter how good y'all are and how bad we are, we still have enough stuff to own your team. What should tell YOU something is that over the last 25 years we lead the series 13-12. So go ahead and talk about how Vince Young (probably one of the most overrated college football players ever, seriously the #7 greatest? I don't think so ESPN, he didn't even win a Heisman!) won the national title game for you, then went bad on his promise to stay with the team in a search for his own glory and money (and is now probably one of the most mediocre QB's in the NFL). You brag about it, because we still have the scoreboard on you guys ever since you won that Rose bowl.

hmmm and do we all remember why he didn't win the Heisman?????? Yup that's right! 12-7! WHOOP!

i'd counter aggie comments but i'm just too worried, frustrated, and lost...
