Ok Sean...I didn't start this:

😀
Yea, you pretty much get to choose the projects that you want to work on. I mean your primary project should be something that the village needs/wants, but for secondary projects you can kinda do what you want.
There are lots of weird cultural things, I'm sure, but it's hard for me to know what is weird because i just got used to it. 😎 Something I never got used to was being a celebrity of sorts. I could never blend in.

What passes for popular culinary fare in rural Cameroon? Did you work closely with the local government, or was it mainly a private sector affair?
Reminds me of my sister. She is pale, with red hair/blue eyes. When she went to China (Xian), people would gather around and ask to touch her hair.
How deep did you guys go with the wells? With malaria being a problem, did how common is sickle cell? Haha, when you get back, does PC run you through a physical, etc in case you're harboring anything nasty?

Sean. Read any good newsletters lately? 😉
What about those BAYLOR BEARS?!!?!?? EIGHT CONSECUTIVE TRIPS TO THE TOILET BOWL! Sic 'Em!
Nothing from A&M today? I tried calling a couple of times this morning, but nobody answered.
Just called San Antonio. They said another batch of acceptances would be going out between now and the 31st, but she didn't know when, or who, or how many.
She did tell me to have a Merry Christmas...little did she know how directly she could make that happen!!!😉
I'm not sure if all these rumors are helping or making things worse. Anytime all the murmuring starts my neurotic email checking is driven into overdrive. As we speak I'm sitting in the bushes on my blackberry getting ready to spring on the mailman! I may take him hostage if he doesn't have good news for me.
Trust me, I know the feeling. Mine came just as I finished my last post, and I practically threw my laptop to the floor to run out the door. A couple of Christmas cards, two bills, two credit card offers. 🙁

I'm really surprised A&M sent anything yesterday. Virtually the entire staff was at Round the Wards in Temple. They didn't say anything about forthcoming offers, however...
I'm sure that no matter what happens to me for the duration of my life, the memory of being at the 2005 Rose Bowl National Championship game will continue to keep a smile on my face. Light that tower up one more time!

UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN CLASS OF 2007HOOK'EM!
I was technically posted under the ministry of health, but did little with them at my first post. At my second post, I worked with an NGO, but we collaborated with local government health centers and higherups at the ministry. The vast majority of hospitals are government owned and operated and healthcare providers are required to do education/public health work as well.
For the wells, it depends highly on the water table. Where we built them, it was fairly high so I believe we went down 15 meters. I can't remember exactly, but it was done by hand. One man dug the hole with what amounts to a crow bar and a bucket.
If anything comes back positive, they give you a voucher to get it checked out here.

Python is good. It's kinda like a mixture of chicken and fish. So, how was the python? Did you get sick with anything besides the usual GI stuff?
PCVs usually are alone at their post, but you can meet up with friends in your provinicial capital when you do your banking. Were there other PCV's in the vicintiy? Does the PC do a good job of supporting you in the field/do you have a certain budget to work with?
Lol, were you able to parlay this celebrity into say....getting your projects featured in what passes for the local media? Do you miss being a celeb, or are ya glad you've got your privacy back?
I sure hope you guys bought that well digger(s) a beer🙂.
PC doesn't recruit or employ doctors except to treat other volunteers. If I was to go back, I would just go to my husband's village and work pro bono for a stint. His uncle is the tribal chief and congressman for that area so he'd help me hook it up.If you go back as a Dr, would go through PC or do you think other org's are better suited for Doc's? Interesting that you brought up compassion. How do think you can bring that out of people?

I got E. histolytica 3 times. BIG 👎 I also got falciparum malaria. Then, a couple of months before I left, I got into a motorcycle accident in the bush and had to have surgery to remove gravel that got stuck in my arm.

In the field, it's pretty much up to you to make stuff happen. I mean you can call your supervisor if you have major work problems, but for the most part you have to take care of your own business. There is zero budget for anything. People usually raise money in the village or use a program where your relatives can donate money to your projects.
Um, no. Your "celebrity" is only good for making you the village laughingstock and raising prices on everything that you want to buy.
No, I don't miss it at all. Also, there is a small minority over there that straight up hate white people and can get pretty in your face about it. Encountering those fools was fun. 😎
He didn't drink, so there was no need. He also made pretty decent money off the gig.

I think as far as the compassion goes, that's not something that they are ever taught or instructed on. Education over there discourages original thought and creativity, so unless someone told them to think about it they wouldn't. That might sound insulting, but it's true. They don't write papers or do art or anything that we encourage kids to do to be creative. I think that takes a toll at all levels and people never venture out of their box to think how others live their lives. They don't ever really try to think about how others might be feeling.
I think it's just a matter of doing trainings on that and counseling techniques.
WOW, sounds like ...... fun .... to say the least. Bet you had a kickass PS. 😉
So I got in contact with A&M. They said that prematches were sent out Monday and that they don't expect any more 🙁. This is contradictory to what we know (that they were sent Wednesday and people were told there may be more). I don't know what to believe.

yeah i just called and was told the same thing. it's strange how i was told yesterday that more offers would be going out this week and told the exact opposite today. so that's that. she said no one got in through the match last year. if anything now, our chances lie with the alternate list (which comes into play if the class doesn't fill or if someone switches/drops out after match).
i agree with you cyclingmo.
also, i just called tech and they said that their last round of pre-match offers will be sent out tomorrow, and that some people will also get in through the match.
Yeah it does suck for us late interviewers. IMO this process could be fairer. For all the early interviewees, they gave out about 250 acceptances. The later ones (the last 3 dates), less than 30-50, since the earlier interviewees are still under consideration. Man, the old match process seems better. Oh well, tomorrow's a new day.

So here's a surprise... I have an invitation to interview with UT Houston in early Jan. I didn't think that anyone was still interviewing...but, there you are.
So the question...do I take it? I have acceptances to both of my top choices (UTSW and Tech's MD/MBA), and Houston is way way out of the way.
Somebody convince me to take it. Or turn it down.

You should pick up a copy of last month's Texas Monthly. One of the featured articles has interviews with members of the last Aggie national championship team. Needless to say, all the guys were about 90 years old. That should tell you something.
You know something, that is interesting. Especially in light of our victory at your house when y'all were the defending national champions. It tells me this, that no matter how good y'all are and how bad we are, we still have enough stuff to own your team. What should tell YOU something is that over the last 25 years we lead the series 13-12. So go ahead and talk about how Vince Young (probably one of the most overrated college football players ever, seriously the #7 greatest? I don't think so ESPN, he didn't even win a Heisman!) won the national title game for you, then went bad on his promise to stay with the team in a search for his own glory and money (and is now probably one of the most mediocre QB's in the NFL). You brag about it, because we still have the scoreboard on you guys ever since you won that Rose bowl.
