I don't understand why they just can't review people once, make a choice, then schedule an interview if they think they would be a good fit. I think this re-review nonsense is crap.

I completely agree. It's ridiculous. You should have heard some of my rantings on this subject a couple years ago when they re-reviewed me from September to March then gave me an interview which put me on the alternate list until finally rejecting me in late July. I hope nobody ever has to go through that torture...

And now that I've lifted your spirits for the day, I'm off to lunch. 😀

On this note, jrae, where's a good place to look long distance for IC, IA real estate? We own our home in Denver and I would love to buy something if we end up in IC. PM me if you have suggestions.

I'll try and get you some info this weekend. I'm off to run several errands before heading to, of all places, Chicago for the weekend.

Extra average: It's nice to hear I'm not the only one who thinks it's total crap. I hope you ahve fun there next year! I think I'm going to end up getting the condo and staying at Iowa. I went and looked at it this afternoon and it wasn't too bad. Never know though, I may not get all of the closing done before Loyola takes their sweet time.....

ok, after getting this email from a doc i know who is a loyola alum i feel better and thought i would try to make others feel better too!

"Congratulations! I actually had the last interview of
the season on 4/28 and I was interviewing for an
alternate spot. I think your chances are good. I got
my call to go just a couple of weeks before the start
of school. It can happen!
Keep the faith!"

.....now no one should be holding their breath anymore! every situation is completely different of course, but let's all breathe a sigh of some relief knowing that as the doc says IT CAN HAPPEN!!!!!

Glad to hear Timmy. Fortunately, I think the only thing you have to worry about are some sleepless nights for a little while. Other than that, I can't imagine you not being admitted.

did anyone participate in this program last summer (it's laid out on their homepage, on the right-hand side)? feedback? was it a good program? learn a lot? what was the emphasis-- ie what were the school's goals for the students? it looks like a nice program-- and pretty unique-- but i'm not sure what the theme or premise of the program is. it kind of looks like 1/3 program to encourage and expose urm's to medicine, 1/3 to strengthen diversity of loyola student body, 1/3 to create a commitment in pre-meds to practice in underserved communities. all fine goals, i just can't tell which is the main focus...

First, I would just like to say that I feel I know many of you fairly well from your posts on SDN, but after reading all 35 pages of this thread (Whew!) I am very happy to say that I would LOVE to have every one of you here as a classmate.

I interviewed on 1/26 and was absolutely awe-struck by Loyola's atmosphere and attitudes. After this, I don't think I could be as happy anywhere else. To those of you who are already in: congratulations. To those of you waiting for either an interview or acceptance: good luck. With any luck I will see you on July 30th if not before!

Please send some good vibes my way for the admissions meeting on Feb. 6th... Loyola is now definitely my #1 choice.

Oh, and Flop, I will happily teach you how to swim. I have been a lifeguard and swimming instructor for almost 10 years now... wow I am getting old! 😉

i sent this in response to some questions asked me in pm, and figured that for those of you (who were like me a year ago and couldn't get enough when it came to reading about loyola)...here's what i wrote:

here's my stab at your questions... stress level. its medical school. it can be really stressful. but i think they do all that is possible for it to be as low stress as possible. classes are curved, so you are competing against classmates for grades (for what grades are worth...that's a whole different issue that i could go into if you wanted). but it doesn't feel like students are competing. there is a lot of collaberation between students, sharing helpful websites and answers to questions from the professor, etc. the work is hard, but not unbearable. there is nearly a 100% attendance rate for classes. most lectures are pretty good. (as anywhere, some aren't very good.) based on how we have one class at a time, some classes are a lot busier than others (you won't do a whole lot other than study and disect during anatomy...now during physiology we have a lot more freetime.) professors are all pretty good in general (i don't have any other medical schools to compare lecturers to.) pretty much all the professors are really excited to be there. they WANT to be working and teaching the students. during anatomy, we always had residents (most often surgical residents) and practicing physicians (again, often surgeons or ortho surgeons, but also urologists teaching the urinary anatomy, etc..) in the lab helping with the disections and identification of everything. there is even a fourth year elective you can take to teach anatomy as a TA. those students were in lab everyday helping and holding study sessions. it was awesome. and yes, the professors are great. the loyola students are all pretty social. orientation week was tons of fun for the new m1's. lots to do, time in chicago, etc. there are post-test parties (bars mostly) and other occassional get-togethers going on all the time. i have a couple guys over every week to watch 'lost' on tv and hangout. yeah, we are social. but students are involved in lots of stuff. i also am still assistant-coaching my college swim team (wheaton college, about 20 minutes west of the hospital) once or twice each week. i also get to help at the free-clinic we help staff once and a while. and every thursday i help make and deliver sandwiches to the homeless living in an area of chicago (lower wacker/lower michigan, etc) this also hints at your question about students feeling a 'higher calling.' we all are in medschool 'to help people' or for some reason more than prestige or to get rich. (that matters to an extent to everyone, but not so much as at some other places, i'd say.) if that's what you want, yes, you'd fit in....what else. oh yes, i work out at least 5, sometimes 6 days/week at the health center. its an amazing place. sooo many students are really active. during a couple hour break we had the other day between classes, i saw probably 20 or 25 of my classmates at the gym. and i think your last question is about student backgrounds. maybe half of the class came straight from undergrad. the rest of us have been out for a year or more (our oldest m1 is 33 years old....the youngest is 20). i personally took a year off and worked. it doesn't matter a whole lot once you are in, though. people have different backgrounds and differnet majors and different experiences. we all benefit from our past in different ways (ie- the biochem majors had a much easier time than i did during our molecular cell biology course). i was a kinesiology major. we have a lot of the college majors represented. (schools really like having more than just the bio or chem major...) ok. long enough answer i'd say. keep asking if you have more questions. it sounds like you'd fit in well with us. if you need advice about where to live as that time comes closer, just let me know. see you around.

Hey guys,
So I called last thursday and was told that im in the re-review pile... after getting a few rejections .. Loyola is at the top of my list .. I know this has be covered but i need some help writing a letter of interest. I'm thinking of talking about why I would fit in, what I have been up too and the changes I have made to my schedule .. am i forgeting anything?

Thanks,
neel

Hey, Thanks for the kind gesture - but I am a pretty darn good swimmer already - did I mention somewhere that I wasn't?? I mean, I can't do that wacky butterfly thing, but really, who can? Although, if you REALLY want a laugh, talk me into trying - it is hilarious.

This reminds me - somebody is going to have to teach me how to swim mo' betta' so I can take advantage of that beautiful pool.

Sorry! I got the wrong impression, apparently. 🙂
If you are still interested in swimming "mo' betta'" though (maybe make your butterfly look a little less hilarious 😛) my offer remains open.
Oh, and I am totally up for squirt gun assasins too, btw. (Please, please, pretty please Loyola-- let me in!)

YEAH!!!! Squirt gun assasins would be SUCH an awesome orientation week way to get to know people and get to know the city... glad to know there is at least one more assasin out there... and yeah, I will learn to spell it correctly by July.

HAHAH! I just envisioned your avatar with one of the gigantic super-soakers that needs back tanks for holding water, because it shoots like 10 gallons a second! I can't wait! What fun! 😀

Ok, I have to stop. I don't want to jinx my chances in the Feb. 6th meeting by talking like I'm already in... I will be crushed if not accepted eventually, and thinking of what fun we would (will!) have will not help me be patient if I am placed on the alternate list, as is likely.

Keep your fingers crossed for me; I will keep lurking on this thread until I am able to post anything more...

OK, Timmy is trying to keep calm and serene...praying a lot! The waitlist is the ultimate test in patience and faith that is for sure. Thinking happy thoughts.....OOHHHHHHHMMMMMMMM..........

Now then, back to business....hey Flop, I saw you posted in the Jan interview invites....may another school steal your heart away from Loyola? Is it possible? And Flippa has an interview at UIC....gosh guys, you are just kicking interview butt here! Congrats! Keep us posted on your progress! I will be thinking of you! 🙂

There is only one school left on my list that would steal me away (UCLA - that $80,000 cheaper tuition thing is pretty compelling). Either way I will be happy.

I had a great time at my Loyola interview on Friday and I can't imagine choosing UIC over Loyola if I get in (Feb 6th adcom meeting 🙁 ) but like Flop that whole instate tuition thing is a draw... Timmy - from my interview it did sound like almost everyone they really liked is getting put on the waitlist at this stage so there is still lots of hope! May this crazy process continue...

What is taking Loyola so long to re-review files? I am still up for my first "re-review."

When you guys say the next adcom meeting is Feb 6 does that include meetings to interview people or are there seperate meetings for that? In other words, are we wasting our time/energy/hope to be expecting a call to interview this week because they havn't met yet?

I wish I could answer that for you USArmyDoc. Although they were very clear about reviewing interviewees for admission on that date, I didn't hear anything about whether they also handled interview invites at the same time while I was there. Anyone else know?

The way I understood it was that the Admissions Committee has nothing to do with interview offers. I remember Dean Norstrom saying that she picks out the interviewees. Now, I don't know if she picks out every single one or if she delegates some of that job, but she seemed to be the one in charge of interview invites. The Admissions Committee only comes into play after the interview in handing-out final decisions.

Are you sure? Did she tell you that herself or are you assuming? Shes got to delegate some of that job. It does make sense though.

Yep. I met with her personally after she explained the process to me and 2 other interviewees (just to make sure I was clear.)

And that's 100 posts... huh

Very nice!! Half of those 100 posts are probably on this forum!

Okay. It's February. You said I would be re-reviewed in February. You can call me anytime.

Well folks, it's that day again.....anyone calling? To be truthful I would not mind calling today myself to ask some questions about this waitlist process....for example, what is the latest date you could be notified? Do they tell you your "rank #" on the waitlist? I ask that as I saw in someone's MDapps profile that they had found out they were #blah on their school's (not Loyola) waitlist. I don't know if I would really want to know the #, I do but I don't....what if it's #386 out of 400? 😱

I am really working super hard to just stay calm and chill about this, really I am! And, for the most part I am doing pretty good....I am trying to have enough confidence in myself and enough faith to just say "they will call me, no worries", but my biggest fear is getting all ready to move to be closer to RFU/CMS when, on say 7/7/06 the phone rings.....and it's Loyola, and they want me, and I've sold my house! Of course the answer would still be a giant "H*LL YES!" but it would be nice to avoid any unnecessary relocation/expenses if I can.

Boy, here I am whining about moving approx 30 miles and then I remind myself of all you who are leaving another state! Shame on me! I really just want them to call me right on May 15th, just so I can start to sleep at night once more!

TimmyTheWonderD said:

Heh...I just got off the phone.

At least I got a slightly modified statement this week (since I sent them an update letter).

This time it was "we will pass that information to the committee and let them know of your interest in Loyola".

I'm not going to call today. I am going to simulate the phone call in my office with much more positive results. Then I am going to go on Priceline and pretend to buy tix to chi-town. Then I am going to call my mom and tell her I am coming home, but not really.

while you are at it, will you do me a favor and inquire about my # on the waitlist? would you make it at least #7 please? i am confident they will have at least 10 openings and 7 is my :luck: #! when you are finished with your phone call, after you have given them my regards, would you mind getting me some tix to the Caribbean? not for med school but for vacation! my pasty white booty could use some sunshine right about now! damn groundhog, six more weeks of frigidly cold weather 😡

thanks in advance for all of your help with this; you are a real pal! 😍

No prob. As a matter of fact I will type up your acceptance letter right now. Funny you were thinking about the Caribbean. I am sitting her thinking about how to financially swing getting to Costa Rica over spring break.

Okay I called and this is how my conversation went!!

Nice lady: AMCAS ID please?

USArmyDoc: XXXX

Nice Lady: The good news is......you have been sent out for review and your file will be back in the office next week!!

SHE EVEN PAUSED AT THE IS!!!!!!!!! Its still good news but goddddd.

seriously, it's like a REALLY BAD car wreck, you don't want to look but you just can't help yourself!

That's it. I am like that girl in school that all the guys know is SUPER EASY.

MY phone call went like this:

Matt: May I have yuor AMCAS ID?

Me: XXXXX

Matt: Okay Barbara, your file has been under review several times and the committee has decided that it is worthy of further review (my emphasis). I will let the admissions committee know of your continued interest in the school.

Me: Okay, thank you, Matt.

My freshman year in high school I kept asking this guy out (Homecoming dance, turnabout dance, movies whatever). He would keep saying yes and then call me right before and tell me that he was going with someone else. Yet, I kept asking because he was tall, skinny, had a mohawk and listened to Oingo Boingo.

This experience with Loyola is conjuring up those same feelings again....

See, maybe this is the problem, if I may speculate here....guys like that only want you when you are "forbidden fruit" if you know what I mean...when they want to be the ones to reject you! As long as you actively pursue them with longing in your eyes they brush you off because they know they can and it gives them a power trip and an ego boost to do so! So, if you call Loyola and say, something like "I am very sorry Loyola, but I cannot go with you to the prom because Iowa asked me first....although you do have cute eyes...." and then hang up maybe they will start to chase you!

(Just kidding obviously!)

This whole review, re-review, re-re-re-review, interview, waitlist, wait, wait, wait, wait, VOMIT IN TERROR, wait, wait, wait thing is really upsetting!

Talk about the consummate tease. Should rename Loyola "Marilyn Monroe's School of Medicine" at this rate.
