Touro-COM NY Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey man, I think I interviewed the same day as you... 12/8 right? Just a guess seeing your location says BC and there was only one kid from BC at my interview date. sucks to here about your interview; like SLM said though, i had the same exact situation happen at LECOM-B when no one else seemed to. keep your chin up though, acceptance calls are going out. I would definitely consider myself an underdog and I actually just got the good-news phonecall yesterday, so I'm sure you snagged one. Good luck, and KMP!

Hey, I actually got an acceptance in the end which was nice. Im still waiting to hear from Western whether or not I was accepted post-interview. Have you had any luck yet with any other schools or is Touro your only acceptance so far? Which student were you? (if you say where you are from im sure I will remember)

Thanks everyone. Congrats again to you all 🙂

Hello,

I am a bit concerned, I sent my secondary in and they said they had received it and would be sending me information about an interview date a month ago. I haven't heard anything back yet. Is anyone else is this predicament? I tried calling today, and I left a message asking if there was anything missing in my file, but no response yet.

Any suggestions?

Congratulations to those of you who are interviewing or accepted!

this was actually my most "drill sergeant" like interview. not conversational at all, straight to the point, direct questions, fired one after another.

im involved in the interview process (admittedly on the student end). Your experience was definitely not the norm. Though knowing which doctors do the interviews you probably got unlucky and got Dr. Steinman or Dr. Levine. They both would be a little more tough and terse than most of the interviewers. Thats just bad luck on you part, sorry to hear it man.

I have to say, I also got drilled during interview with ethical questions etc. There was no transition into the interview with "tell us about yourself etc". However, with that being said only one of the ladies was doing this. The other one kept putting an effort to make it more relaxed and she was much nicer.

I definitely thought it was a tough interview. However, I have only had two interviews so far....and I was accepted to Touro, where I will most likely attend next year🙂

Again, I was also another interviewee that got the drill sergeant routine. Those of us who did receive this type of interview probably aren't the norm because apparently I was the only one out of like 12 interviewees that seem to get this treatment on my interview day. Everyone else was like:" They just asked me talk about myself for 20 minutes".

While it was disconcerting at the time, it resulted in an acceptance. So I can't be mad.

Sorry about that. But congrats though! Did anyone see a correlation between the intensity level of the interviews and the day of the week? Lol
mine is on a tuesday.

Have any new interview invites gone out recently?

I've been waiting since October. When I used to call to see what was going on they said they were booked until the end of Jan. and would be scheduling more interviews the first week of Jan. Honestly I know Jan. just started but waiting that long for an interview was very difficult.

Hey I just got an interview invite. Anyone know my chances at getting in if I interview in Feb. I know it's kinda late but I was just wondering. Also how full do you think the class would be now?

I got the interview invite email today as well and am also curious to know this answer

Hey just curious, what day is your interview? I'm on Feb 1st.

I replied back requesting the 1st but told him I was available any of the dates so not sure what I'll get...still waiting for confirmation, but i might see you there!!

I just got my interview invite as well! I requested to be interviewed on the 1st, but said that I was available during the 2nd and 8th if that date is already full. Maybe I'll see you guys there!

I'm pretty excited! I haven't interviewed anywhere yet and got my first three invites this week! I guess it's time to start preparing!

hey guys! i think i may have read somewhere on here that some people who interviewed this or past cycle were asked some ethical questions and I was wondering if anyone would mind sharing, if they remember, what types of ethical questions they were asked? thanks guys & i wish everyone luck in this process!!

Well, off the top of my head, I do remember that one of the questions I was asked was "how do you deal with power/authority?"

Honestly from what I gathered from my interview and from the other interviewees on the same day as me...they tailor the interview almost entirely to you and your interests/application. I was not asked a specific ethical question, but we were talking about the conflict patients have between their religious values and reproductive health care specifically, and I was asked how I navigate this conflict (because I have been working in this setting for almost 5 years now). There really is no good specific way to prepare for this interview except understand what makes Harlem a unique community and be able to talk about your experiences. Heck, at one point we were even talking about our favorite books. If you're going in with a specific set of prepared questions/answers, you're going to be a bit disappointed when few of them are asked....

I will be withdrawing my acceptance as I got accepted to Western so there is one more free spot for someone🙂

I thought I'd share my recent interview process.

First, plan to arrive at least 2 days ahead because, as we all know, winter time can cause flight delays. I got unbelievably lucky as I was in 1 of the 4 flights out of Atl airport.(A pilot who was in Business class carried my luggage to my connecting flight for me, and they waited for me to board...talk about the kindness of Airtran employees).

Anyway, the interview was as relaxed as can be. I had NO ethics questions, but really questions specified to me, and my experiences. The interviewers were really genuine, and asked the typical interview questions but also they made an effort to explain why their school is different from other schools.

I was throughly impressed with the school; I love that the faculty/dean/adcom, they were all interested in your success-- albeit you achieve it by attending their school or another school. The school's diverse, and I felt comfortable in NY. Don't let some close-minded fools let you think that this is a cold, hard place. I got lost several times and people went out of their way to hail me taxis, print out directions, etc. We had an opportunity to speak to a 4th yr student, and impressively she matched at Emory so that's saying a lot!

All in all, I loved the school, the wisdom that the staff possesses, the general impression left on me was that they really wanted to just discuss current issues with future medical professionals.

way back when i interviewed in mid april and got in to one of the few remaining spots. So there were (at least in 2009) a few spots remaining by april. But they made no bones about it that it was only 5 or 6 spots.

I am from NYC, and I am so happy that Touro NY is in my Harlem stomping ground. I hope everyone that wants to be there gets there, and thanks for those of you serving my former community.😍

Is that a pre match?

The actual match or match list comes out later I think right? March?

yea actual match doesnt happen til march. But, hospital staff are allowed to tell you if you have a virtual lock. I'm assuming that what they are referencing since we do have people at emory in our fourth year class. This isnt the first time i've heard anecdotes about our students being told they are a virtual lock if they rank the hospital high.

fingers cross that emory shows up on our match list in 3ish months:xf:

just turned down my interview for february 1st so there's a free spot if anyone wants it. good luck all!

For those that interviewed, is there a place I can put my jacket and do I need to bring anything with me other than the email?

You need ID too. Bring your coat. There is a place to put it. You need it for the tour anyway. You will be outside for a few minutes as you visit the second building.

you can even bring a bag and just leave it in the corner...some people brought suitcases because they were leaving right after.

does anyone know roughly the percentage of interviewees that get accepted?

They interview about 500ish and there are 100 seats (135 technically, but 35 are saved for their feeder program). This information has already been discussed in the forum many many times... They probably accept between 200-250 to account for those who get multiple acceptances and go elsewhere.

yea as he said. I usually hear there is about a 33% to 40% acceptance rate. And 100 seats or so are open. Thr 35 from the feeder program has been steady for a few years, but unofficial conversations ive had with those in admissions says that the 35 number is going down a bit (25? 20?). They are not happy with the performance that the "graduates" of the masters program are giving, so they are considering lowering the number of 'top performers' they take and letting more accepted applicants into the class.

I'll be there on the 8th, very excited. NY has to be one of my top choices

From what I've heard, there are about 50 that have accepted and paid deposits already.

Was hoping some decisions from the 1/11 group would go out today but guess not...darn.

I interviewed on 1/11 too. Really excited for tomorrow!! Hopefully we all get in!

Anybody hear from Touro today? No call, no email for me. I guess this means they are meeting tomorrow.

prob wont hear from them til monday. We are having our COCA meeting this whole week, which means the accreditation committee is looking over everything we are doing. Apparently, if the meeting with them is any sign, we're doing great. But the need to make sure everything the admin does is perfect means that I'd suspect the admission department is busy being audited rather than sending out acceptances.

they very well could still do it today, but i'd prob assume a wait til monday is in order. also, the COCA meeting is a yearly thing for all new schools, incase the word 'audit' gave the wrong impression.

I got an email regarding an interview invite dates available were feb 1st, 2nd, 8th, 19th....Then I sent out an email but the dates were taken so then the email said choose 8th or 9th...and i am confirmed for the 9th...Does that mean the first email was a mix up and meant to be 9th not 19th... bc thats a saturday and it says they only interview tues and wed...and is anyone else interviewing on the 9th...seems like everyones ogt the 8th!? 🙁

I definitely think it was a typo- I cant imagine they interview on saturdays. I checked my email invite and mine says the same dates as yours

I had the same thing happen as well. It's definitely a typo. When I called to schedule they said that all dates were full except for the 9th (this was back in mid-December.) I ended up scheduling for the 9th...

Hi guys!

eek im getting so excited for the interview on the 2nd... so pumped to finally get to see the school and get a sense of the atmosphere there 😀

Just wanted to share my interview experience: As a previous member described, it was like a "good-cop/bad-cop" style. The bad-cop asked almost all the questions and the exchange was quick and back-and-forth. Many times, I wanted to elaborate on my responses, but I was faced with the next question. Several times, I felt I was really being put on the grill (ie. interrogated) and made to feel inadequate. Moreover, it seemed to me that some questions were designed to trip me up (no ethical questions though). The question were all pertaining to me and my file. Although I remained composed and never faltered, I walked away from this interview very unsure of myself.

From reading other interview descriptions, I understand that mine was probably out of the norm. But can anyone attest to such an experience? Any input is greatly appreciated.

I had the similar experience. I think all they look for is your ability to stay calm. I was really unsure about my interview but I got accepted. They tried to argue alot about ethical questions -- like social medicine. I think it is imp. to stick with what you believe and just be honest don't swap positions infront of them and just be consitent with your answers. Lastly, expect a followup question on whatever you say -- so always know how to backup your answer.
Mine wasn't long 15-20min max but some students who interviewed with me were in for 30-35mins.

.... From reading other interview descriptions, I understand that mine was probably out of the norm. But can anyone attest to such an experience? Any input is greatly appreciated.

I interviewed on Jan. 18 along with 12 other applicants. Many of us were familiar with the posts on this forum and knew that at least one person out of most groups got a stress interview. I won that prize.

As I went into the interview room, it was all "Bad Cop/Bad Cop." My interviewers had adopted stoney demeanors and rigid body language, one actually sitting there with crossed arms. Oooh boy, I thought. I was told to have a seat, and before my bottom hit the naugahyde, my interviewers let fly with "Why medicine and why an osteopathic school?" The questions continued in a rapid-fire pace the entire time I was with them, which went beyond what was initially allotted. Oddly enough, it turned out not to be a bad experience at all.

Before I arrived, I had reviewed the posts on this thread, and more importantly, I had also spent a lot of time going through the interview feedback section for Touro, two things I highly recommend to other applicants. I reviewed all the questions reported by others, and I had an idea of how I would answer each one.

So while the initial interview tone was a bit of a surprise, none of the questions were. Thanks to SDN, I felt I was prepared for everything thrown at me, and I did not encounter a question I had not seen before. I should also note that the interviewers were VERY familiar with my file, to the point of asking questions about OMT techniques practiced by the DO General Surgeon I shadowed for a week.

About 2/3 of the way through the interview, I sensed a thaw in the grilling, and in fact the tone of the interview changed at length into a much more relaxed and conversational one, including even sporadic laughter. The rapid-fire pace continued, but I got the impression that at that point, it was due to the fact that they wanted to gather as much info as they could to make a case for me to the admissions committee as a whole. Or maybe I'm reading too much into things. Time will tell, but I left the interview cautiously optimistic.

Most of the questions I recall are the following:

Why medicine and why an osteopathic school?
What do you know about Harlem?
Have you done any research?
Why are you changing careers? (I'm a non-traditional applicant)
What didn't you like about your previous career?
If you never use your previous career training again, won't you think it all to have been a terrible waste?
Do you know the demographics of Touro's student body?
How will you adapt to being around younger classmates?
How will you adapt to Harlem?
How will your personal life be affected by the demands of your first year?
If you don't get into medical school, what would you do, and you're not allowed to say you'll reapply, and we really mean it?
If you find after your first year that medicine's not for you and you leave, how will you deal with any student loan indebtedness?
If you run into academic trouble your first year, how will you cope?
Why Touro?
Did you have any chances to observe any OMT techniques performed by the DO Surgeon you shadowed or by any other DO?
What is the mission of Touro?
Is this your first interview?
Have you applied to other schools? Osteopathic? Allopathic?
What branch of medicine interests you at this point and why?
Have you had anatomy? (Me: No.) Will you have had it before you matriculate? Because you really should. (Me: Yes.)

I hope this has been helpful. One other thing: Obed Figueroa, Director of Admissions, started the day with a Q & A session with the group as a whole over coffee and doughnuts. Very casual. Some of the questions he asked the group also appeared in the Touro Interview Feedback section here on SDN. In hindsight, I think he was gently trying to warm us up for our interview sessions, which I very much appreciated.
