Touro-COM NY Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Officially placed on the high wait list (interviewed 1/11). I'm not really completely disappointed because apparently there is a lot of movement from the high wait list, but just sick of waiting...Apparently they take everyone from the high waitlist at the end of the cycle who did not get offered a seat, and the Dean considers guaranteeing them a spot for next year's class on an individual basis, which is also kinda cool.

Just wanted to send an update out. Best of luck to everyone!

Congrats on the highwaitlist! When did you hear back from them? I still haven't heard anything and I interviewed on 1/11 too

Thanks, wish it was a flat out acceptance, but I'll take it! lol I heard at like 430PM today. I'm pretty sure they met today, so expect something tomorrow if you haven't heard yet.

yea. Ive been hearing about a more high pressure interview a lot lately. We still tend to have more interviews go "extremely relaxed and asking more personal involved questions". Which is nice and relaxing and usually lets you shine in some unique ways. But those nice low-pressure interviews have gone from being a nearly universal experience to now being a little less than 2/3 of the rooms with about a third of our interviews being higher pressure.

this comes from us moving from a closed file to an open file system this year.

but the basic format of what questions you'll face doesn't seem to have changed. In both high and low pressure, as well as in the previous closed file as well as the current open file, the three 'rounds' of the interview are mostly the same. So I'd heavily suggest reading our interview comments on SDN since those questions are the right style.
You'll get a "what do you know about harlem/nyc/osteopathy that makes you want to come here specifically". or some derivative.

You'll get the usual "explain your weakness" question. But this time they will know your weakness so you will have to answer the most blatantly obvious one, instead of picking your favorite weakness.

and you'll have them sit back and ask personal questions. The real goal, as best as i can tell, is to get you to say something interesting, at which point you will be asked about it in very explicit and specific details. I stumbled into saying I was a poly sci major and they jumped into very specific questions on new healthcare reform. When i admitted I was only superficially versed in it they began fishing for a new topic. When i added I worked for a chiropractor who practiced a lot of alternative medicine they jumped back on asking me about evidence-based-medicine and the ethics of charging money for procedures that lacked double-blind evidence by non-biased sources.

I've heard these things go very relaxed (they still probe, but its a very natural ebb and flow of the conversation with the probing seeming 'interested' rather than 'exploratory') and go very rapid fire and stressful (which i think is self explanitory). But either way, the general format is the same. Also, the person who said Obed is prepping you... HE IS. When he tells you what not to say, he is telling you stuff that killed other people. Don't say it.

examples of what not to say: only here cause I couldnt get into any MD (even if true, you should have plenty of reasons to want to go DO). That you only want to work on park ave, or any other completely ritzy place (we're training you to give back the most to the community. appreciate harlem and other underserved areas).

.... You'll get the usual "explain your weakness" question. But this time they will know your weakness so you will have to answer the most blatantly obvious one, instead of picking your favorite weakness.

This was the turning point in my interview, which made me feel like the purpose of the rapid fire pace was no longer about testing my tolerance for pressure and instead about getting to know me as well as they could in a limited amount of time.

At this point, probably because of a perceived weakness in me arising from the fact that I am years removed from my undergraduate experience, they asked, "If you run into academic trouble in your first year, how will you cope?" I responded that I would immediately seek help, taking advantage of the academic support offered by the school. I added that I never used to talk to my professors outside of class as an undergrad, but made a point of doing so during my post-bacc studies, to my benefit. "Good," they responded. "That's the best answer you could have given." I felt pretty good from that point of the interview forward.

Also, I was impressed with Obed quite beyond his helpful prep. He's a great guy.

I can't believe anyone would ever be so unwise as to say the above during an interview.

+1 on Obed. He is quite awesome and really nice in how he subtly gets you in the right mindset before your interview.

Crawdad, its for people like you that I went back and did the interview feedback. Its nice to know that someone is benefiting from it. I had an interview just like yours and I got accepted so you have good reason to be cautiously optimisitic.

Thanks very much. I'll be adding my experiences to the interview feedback section as well. Hopefully, others will find the feedback section as useful as I did.

Hi everyone,

I have an interview at tourony on feb 16. I was wondering if anybody on here has the same interview date?? Also is there anybody willing to share some advice/tips for my interview from those that have already interviewed.

interviewing on the 22nd... has anyone stayed at aloft hotel, I'm thinking about booking there since it's so close... not tooo sure though.

I'm a bit nervous for the interview, my mind always goes blank -__- but this school seems very promising.

I had a pressure interview, detailed in an earlier post, and all in all, I thought it went well. To prepare, I read the posts on this thread, and I reviewed all the questions on the Touro Interview Feedback section. That probably was the most important thing I did. I also researched Harlem's health issues on the internet, including the PDF report here: http://www.childrenshealthfund.org/sites/default/files/HealthStatusofHarlem.pdf. The PDF is a few years old but still informative as to health trends.

I also researched the status of New York medicine on the internet and in magazine articles, including a New York Magazine article on the state of NYC's hospitals dated October 23, 2010. That article is incredibly informative, and it gives an idea of where medicine is going, even without the PPAC Act (Obama-Care). I read a book on Obama-Care titled "Landmark," written by the staff of the Washington Post. I read the Touro website closely. I read a book and researched the internet on OMT techniques, including as they specifically relate to asthma, since that is a major problem among Harlem's children, with rates 50% higher than NYC generally. (Some OMT techniques for asthma were Greenman Muscle Energy, Fascial Release, and Rib-Raising, the last of which not only loosens the rib cage but also apparantly has theraputic effects vis-a-vis asthma relating to the lymphatic system and the sympathetic nervous system ... or so I was told. OMT techniques can be seen in videos on YouTube).

Listen closely to everything Obed Figueroa says prior to your interview, he's a great guy and he's trying to help everyone have a good experience. Best of luck to you and all others on the site.

I do not know why everyone is making such a big deal out of these types of interviews...you do understand that for the most part the rest of your career will be very similar to this "pressure" situation right? You will be expected to think very quickly on your feet, and be able to defend your actions with great detail. It is a part of the process that makes for great physicians. If you cant handle the occasional grilling and intensity of an interview...how are you going to handle confronting a patient's family, your attendings on rounds, and if you ever have to go to court, testifying on the witness stand? I understand we don't all have equal exposure to this and have varying levels of comfort with it, but if it is a weakness of yours, then work on it like you would any other part of your application. BTW, this isn't directed at anyone in particular, but rather at people in general who are frustrated with this type of interview experience.

If you're comfortable with the $200 nightly rate, go for it. I stayed there, but I didn't find it worth the price.

Well you're going to need a lot higher mcat than that. I'll be blunt. Though the inside word is that the two science sections count more (as they should) than the english/reading section. While I do think they still count that as part of the score when considering your admission, if the english comprehension part is the lowest section they take it easier on you than if its the highest section.

me personally? 3.2 something GPA (3.28 i think) and 34T MCATs (yea i know. I actually tried on the MCATs). The GPA isnt everything, especially given that most of our students do come from 'name brand' schools. So its hard to argue that you went to a harder or more elite school. The MCATs are the great equalizer and they view them as such. They can forgive a lower score, but I really hope it pulls a bit higher than a 22. I love to welcome anyone I can to the school, but thats far too low right now.

DocEspana, yeah it makes sense...22 is too low of a score i know...i got a 9 in both the science sections but its the verbal that killed me, i got a 4 in that so i am hoping i did much better on it this jan exam. just praying... rest of my app is excellent...its this mcat thats my biggest hurdle. i am a bad test taker

Good luck koala. I think the cut off is 24.

I just got in with 3.9 GPA in biochem
and a 24 MCAT there is hope.

More acceptances are going out. Good luck everyone!

Hi,
I interviewed on 1/18. People are getting acceptances and I haven't gotten a call yet, but also no rejection e-mail. Does anyone know if this is bad news? Obed sent me an e-mail yesterday saying the committee still has some folders and he would push to get me an answer by today... but no phone call. He did not say I would definitely have an answer by today but still... I am worried! Does anyone know if I should assume rejection? Or do they usually make acceptance calls over a few days? Any insight would be appreciated.. 😕
Thanks so much!

I also interviewed on Jan. 18th, and I got the same email from Obed with the same pledge to get me a response by Thursday as you seem to have gotten. As in your case, it still hasn't come. I'm not worried ... I figure there could be any number of reasons the committee might be behind. Most importantly, if I were you, I would not assume rejection simply because of this delay. Good luck to all.

Same thing happened to me when I interviewed. Obed called me to say the committee was still going over applicants and that he would get back to me the next day. He never called, but a week later I got an acceptance email, so don't be worried yet! 🙂

Thank you so much Crawdad and TurtleGirl for the replies.. you have definitely eased some of my concern, although the person who interviewed 1.19 and has already got an acceptance made me worry! Today still having not heard anything, I am even more worried! Please keep me updated via SDN or personal message if you guys hear anything and I will do the same for you!

Best of luck to everyone!

does everyone get either accepted or waitlisted? Are there no rejections?

does everyone get either accepted or waitlisted? Are there no rejections?

there are rejections. as per obed's comment i overheard a few weeks ago: he has gotten rid of the medium and low priority waitlist. Or maybe its just the low priority wait list. Well either way he has gotten rid of a certain 'portion' of pseudo-acceptance so those people get rejections.

but the rejection rate is very low because the interview rate is very low as well. Getting an interview is a decently good sign. Someone did the math on this before. apparently 1-in-3 who interview will eventually either be accepted or come off the waitlist by classes starting.

Hey, so I have seen this done on forums in the past and while it is hard to draw any conclusive information from this information...it makes me feel better haha. So feel free to input your information and continue this along. This is really only for waitlisted peeps. Hopefully we will see lots and lots of movement.

anyone interviewing on 2/9 and staying at the aloft?

I got the call from Obed today at 5:20 PM. I have the good fortune of having been accepted to Touro, which had become one of my top choices following my interview there on Jan. 18th.

This thread and the Touro Interview Feedback Section were very helpful to me during the application process, and I am grateful to everyone who shared their insights and experiences.

I am interviewing on the 22nd as well and staying in the aloft hotel, cause its so close. I was able to get a room for 160, maybe cause I booked early.

Heard August 1st. Though im not sure since... well... i'll be a 3rd year (so i dont care anymore about the first day of class wooohoooooo)

Yep! Obed send the 2015ers an email a few days ago confirming that August 1st is the start date.

That's not bad! I haven't booked yet... I'm horrible LOL.

Hey all...
I interviewed at KCOM and OUCOM this week. Was just offered an interview at Touro NY but not sure if I'm going to interview with them. I think KCOM and OUCOM are much more reputable and am hoping that I am accepted into one of them.
Any Advice for respectfully turning down an interview? I'm still waiting to hear back from TouroCOM in California so I want to be careful what I say. TouroCOM out in California sent me an email saying that they hope to interview me but for me to stay patient.. I guess it's good that they said that instead of rejecting my application. Kinda weird though...

Just politely decline. No need to give reasons. Simply say you no longer wish to interview there. I'd suggest you interview at touroCOM NY cause people tend to fall in love with it after seeing it on tour. But, I'd also say if your heart is set elsewhere and you expect an acceptance, then decline the interview. Gotta go where your heart is set.

As for Touro-CA.... are your MCATs a little low? Touro-CA has among the highest MCAT requirements of all the DO schools (if not the highest). It gets a hard rap for various other things, but its application process is very stringent.
A side effect of being in CA where the education system is extremely small compared to the applicant pool.

I can't comment on where next year's class will live, but in general each class follows the same pattern.

Many live in harlem (I do). It is very close, and one of the most affordable spots in manhattan. The next area of greatest concentration is probably the upper west side. Beyond that, people are everywhere. Some in inwood, some in brooklyn, jersey, the bronx, you name it. Some even commute all the way from connecticut or long island (although I wouldn't recommend it unless you already live there).

Also, we had out very first class match today. Although we don't know "complete" numbers until the scramble and allopathic match are complete, our rate of unmatched students in the AOA match is already in the top half of all DO schools.

Also, some good news regarding one of our OMS-II students.

Proud to be a Touro student. 🙂

For fun, lets celebrate the DO match that happened today.

TouroCOM NY finished 10th among all DO schools, with TouroNV finishing 23rd and TouroCA finishing 25th.

GO US!!! First class through and we owned it.

Is TouroCOM NY going to post the match list on the internet somewhere? Also, how are the match lists ranked?

I assume the list will be made available somehow. But probably not until after the allopathic match, so the rest of the class can get their spots.

I'm not sure what you mean exactly with your question about match lists. Could you be more specific?

The national match posted the general "matched, didnt match" numbers for the AOA last night. http://www.natmatch.com/aoairp/schltot.htm

I took that list and made the most relevant stat possible out of it. Which is taking the number of people who applied but didnt match and dividing it by the raw number of applicants from that school.

Since at most places more than half the students don't apply to the AOA match, I cant use the given statistics in the chart, which are out of the whole enrolled class, applied or not.

here is that list ordered up.

Has anyone who interviewed on 2/1 or 2/2 heard anything back yet? I'm starting to sweat a little bit🙂 yikes!

If your analysis of the match list results is correct, then wow Touro did pretty good for a first class! I can't wait for the actual results though.
