Touro-COM NY Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
@koala - I know your mcat stats - you should be fine for Touro. At the interview, Obed said they use MCAT for about 10% of the admission score. He even mentioned that they look at the science scores more.

This school was amazing! Seemed like a very cohesive school.

wow, drgioiadds, u just gave me a sense of relief. Thank you! 🙂

How far is this school of Manhattan? I am from Illinois, so I have no idea how NYC is. But def I love the urban setting, so i am def gonna apply. Is there a cutoff mcat score for Touro?

The school is in mahattan. Let me try to stage the location for you.

Manhattan is an island in the middle of what is commonly considered "new york city", or the five boroughs. Its south of the Bronx, west of queens and brooklyn, north of Staten Island and east of New Jersey. Manhattan (also known as New York County) is 13 miles long by 2.5 miles wide and is the smallest county in america. Midtown Manhattan (Tourist part of the city) stretches from 14th street to 59th street. I'm not going to discuss anything below 14th street cause its too complicated, but suffice to say people live down there and there are a number of things theoretically worth noting down there. Central park starts at 59th street and runs to 110th street. The are east and west of this are the upper west and east sides. This is where tons of people live in Manhattan. From 110th north is Harlem. Harlem is made up of Spanish Harlem (the borders arent clear, but generally speaking its always 'east harlem'), Columbia University (the farthest west of Harlem from 110 through 170th) and Central Harlem (everything inbetween all the way north). 125th street is the major road in harlem and is considered the 'heart' of the community. We're dead center in central harlem and on 125th street.

It takes about 10 minutes to ride the subway from Harlem 125th to 59th street columbus circle, which is the first stop in midtown. The school is a 4-5 minute walk from the station. There you go. That should help you place it pretty well.

Thanks!! This is great. If I end up going here, I'll definitely want to live near Central park because I am a runner/marathoner.

So since we know the high waitlist is quite large, yet apparently they go through "a lot of it" (which makes sense given people hearing from other schools last minute and what not), I was wondering if anyone was previously admitted from the waitlist is on here, and what position they were. Just trying to get a gauge of exactly how much they go through. Is it half? 3/4? Obed doesn't seem to give specifics on this (not sure I blame him).

At my interview, he made it sound that they end up giving out 100 extra acceptances to fill the class. I would think that people aren't called of the list until all the interviews and final numbers are in. Not sure though.

No I understand that...trying to figure out how much of waitlists they actually go through...

Good friend of mine was on the high waitlist before he got in. But I don't think his story helps a lot since he was placed #1 on the high waitlist and came off 48 hours later.

Does anyone know if they are still inviting for interviews? I got the email saying they received my secondary and fee about 2 weeks ago and haven't heard since, so hoping I wasn't too late :scared:

That's cool!! I had a friend who went to PT at Central Michigan who was in the same position also.

1 more week....

Hello! I Interviewed in early March and got high waitlisted. Can anyone comment on whether Obed reveals your actual position on that wait list. I've read enccouraging things like they went through almost the whole high waitlist in the last few years. I've also read that the wait list has upto 120 people. I don't know what to make of it all. Thanks.

When did you submit your application? They may still be interviewing but at this point it will be mainly to waitlist backup candidates. I received an interview call quite a while after submitting my application. Keep us posted of any developments on your end. Best to you.

Anyone else have insights into how much of the waitlist they have gone through historically?

I received my interview invite a few days after my file was complete with LOR and Secondary app. I took a late MCAT so once the scores came, things moved along quickly at this school.

I would not let anything deter you from interviewing. IMO, the interview is your time to show your communication and interpersonal skills.

i was wondering if anyone knew what you are ranked by. Is it by the number you were waitlisted like let's say i was the 100th person to be waitlisted so im 100...or is it by your file and how good of an applicant you seem to be!?

We will all find out rankings out in May, and no one knows how the list is determined (they do not give this information out).

I have to assume it's the latter. It wouldn't be fair to rank the waitlist by a first-come-first-serve type methodology. I imagine the admissions office ranks applicants based on some collection of factors that I can't speculate on.

Who said this process was fair!?!?!!?!? 😉

on my interview date when I asked Obed how do you rank the waitlist? he joked based on your shoes!! and then he went on to say based on your application and how good you are. so no first come first serve.

Apparently the school is hosting a wine and cheese event for all the accepted students tomorrow at 5:00 at the school. Will I be seeing any of your guys there? They want us current pre-clinical students to come and pimp you guys (or be nice. One of those things).

Nope. I'm 9 hours drive away

No 🙁 I'm still in undergrad like 11 hours away

If I knew I was going to be in the class I'd leave work and get on the next flight 🙂

I think they are inviting for interviews still. I got the email saying they received my secondary app. two weeks ago as well. I then received another email recently saying they have one of my letters of recommendation and will mark my file complete when they receive the other.

I think so to. The deadline for my secondary was in may, but I sent it back ASAP so I could get an interview date. I must say that of all the schools I applied to Touro admissions was really on the ball with processing everything. Especially, since I had to wait for Jan. MCAT scores to be released in March.

I totally agree...🙂🙂

Although the interview was conversational, I am quite anxious because I didn't know what they were looking for. They asked me about my hometown history and I sorta tripped on that 'cus I didn't prepare for it. :/ Did you guys here send out a thank you letter post interview? What did you guys write about?

Overall, what did you think? I'm non-traditional, and most of my questions revolved around that. I felt like I could have talked to the interviewers all day. I did send thank you cards and emails.

Did they tell you two weeks? After the interview and tour was done, did you meet some of the deans with lunch. I actually liked that part of the day because everyone had to ask a question, and everyone had to answer questions.

Were you there? Not sure if I met you or not...what were you wearing? What is your REAL name?

hey guys
Obed just emailed me and said that Ive been placed on the waitlist HIGH. I interviewed on March 15th and I thought that I did really bad.

In the email he used the phrase "I'm happy to inform you that you have been places..."

so I guess it's a very good thing since other schools just say "I regret to inform you..."

also Obed said the following which I don't understand
"You will be considered as a candidate for Early Accept to the class of 2016 should you ultimately not be offered to the class of 2015"

Does this mean I have been accepted to the class of 2016? like a deferred acceptance??

Really Happy

That sounds good!! Congratulations.👍

Wearing the red Polo. offered to give people tours two or three times. Pooped in the fridge and ate a whole wheel of cheese. (was that last one me?)

Ahhhh, yes, of course. I remember hearing you announce the tour and I just shook my head and said "yea, no one heard him. poor guy." Excellent Anchorman quote, its in my top 5. I'm not even mad. That's amazing!

I got the same email and asked him about it. He explained to me that once they go through and the class is filled, and classes have started, the Dean will go through everyone left on the high waitlist (if there is anyone) and make decisions on a case by case basis as to whether or not to early accept them for the next class.

They just deposited my secondary fee check so hopefully an invite is soon to come?

Did you call the school or email? It should mean that. I wonder how long they are interviewing until?

Tours (so thus, I can assume) interviews continue every tuesday and wednesday through april. Then they end. So it looks like (counting tomorrow) there are 7 more interview dates.

If they continue interviews without student tours is possible, but I personally assume it means no more interviews.

Yes, they interview through April because they announce waitlist order early May. At least that is what I have been told several times.

Obed just recently posted that they changed plans and will be ending interviews in two weeks. I guess that's earlier than normal.

Fine by me! Less competition! 🙂 haha sorry was that rude? I just hate that I am competing with kids who filled out their applications 6-8 months after I did (I would have loved the extra time to shadow and extra semester GPA to boost my standings. Yes, I do realize that I can do extra stuff and update my file but it isn't the same.)...if you are applying this late in the cycle, you should just hold off till the next cycle and have less competition...but I'm biased...
