TOUROCOM NY Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone know how the deferred acceptance works? Like what would be an example of something they would consider a valid reason to defer acceptance?

Last year people were taken off the Hight wait list and offered deferred admission to class of 2016. Not sure if this school allows you to defer an offer. I'd be interested to see how many people who accepted the deferred offer actually attend in 2016.

FINALLY got the secondary today (AACOMAS released Oct. 22ish)...thanks for sharing nyk!

Sorry SunDai, I meant they were released Sept 21/22 ish, so it took a little over a month for Touro to process/send me the secondary...if it takes them a few more weeks to send you one, I wouldn't worry. I've talked to Isso a few times and it sounds like their whole timeline is pushed back a month or two compared to other schools.

Ohhh, ok.....:::wipes tears from face::: lol

I'll hold out a while longer:xf:

I was waitlisted last cycle, starting at number 132 out of 141. I wasn't pulled off the waitlist, but after the class had been decided around August, I was offered a deferred admission over the phone by the new dean. He didn't elaborate on how the decision was made for who was offered a deferred admission, but it must be something besides actual waitlist ranking.

For stats, i had a 3.0 undergrad, 3.6ish masters (all med school classes/lab thesis), and a 32mcat (13V, 8P, 11B), plus the usual assortment of work/volunteer/shadowing that everyone else has.

A deferred acceptance is not an early decision, so I am still applying elsewhere this cycle. As for turning a regular decision into a deferred decision, I believe it must be along the lines of a medical/family emergency that prevents you from attending school that year, not something like squeezing in that backpack trip to Europe you've been dying to do.

Is anyone else on here interviewing on 11/17? I will also be staying in the city till 11/20 so will be available to check out Harlem or beyond with my fellow interviewees

Also......This is my first interview so I am desperate for some advice for those who have already interviewed here this cycle or from current students at TOUROCOM. What was your experience? Questions asked? Any suggestions/advice would be great. Please PM me when you get the chance

When did you interview last year? I have an inkling that my best bet now is to be deferred (better than rejected!), but my interview date was the first of the year. I'm hoping that if I was wait-listed that I'd maybe be pulled off before the end of the year.

I interviewed on Jan 26th, 2011, and was put on the high waitlist. The waitlist moved pretty far, but I was so high on it (high being bad) that I didn't have a chance to get pulled. I was pretty lucky to get a deferred admission, but I'm not sure what criteria they use for them. It may be MCAT.

I think you are correct. I interviewed in March and was ranked 120 on the waitlist, but my MCAT was much lower and did not get deferred admission for 2016.

It would be interesting to see what % of students offered the deferred spot actually start next august, since they essentially have a free year to apply to other schools.

There are quite a few who deferred acceptance the year they interviewed and are now in my class. Some deferred to work, some deferred to do research. I think it's really on a case by case basis, but possible.

yeah i talked to isso once and he said because of vacations and w/e other reasons they were pushed back but even then it seems rather extreme =.=. i was released 9/29 so i guess i should be expecting mine sometime soon. been waiting foooorever.

well to be fair the month of october was jewish holiday after jewish holiday so he wasn't making excuses on that.

I'm assuming most of the class is probably already filled with their graduate program and deferred admissions from last year. Its just speculation since most other schools have been filling their classes since september.

Are you saying most of 2012 entering class is filled already? There can't be THAT many deferred admissions...right?

It's already been more than a week since I interviewed here...
This wait is killing me...it's not only the anxiety, I can't even focus at work thinking about this. Anyone on the same boat?

I don't really know, but the class is small compared to other DO schools. I do know quite a few come from the feeder masters program. Also, I"m sure not everyone who accepted the deferred will go. I know of one, who is not, although accepted the spot last year.

I wouldn't assume its guaranteed that everyone in the Master's program goes straight into Med School. It's two semester program. The school can't know for sure whos gonna start next fall. Its hard to say they block off 30-40 spots on the assumption all those people pass the courses and the comprehensive exam at the end AND still want to go to Touro. Furthermore, I'm sure there are people that received a deferred admission and still applied broadly again this year.

I agree! The wait is killing me...I really hope the class isn't too full already, I think that was the main advantage to getting an early interview

With all due respect to drgioiadds, I really don't think it can be that full. The first four interview days were 10/5, 10/6, 10/25 & 10/26. I think theres 5 more days this month. I doubt they schedule all these days with "half-full" class. They probably start later so applicants have a chance to interview at other schools and know their status at those schools before coming to a Touro interview.

Hey guys, don't be so nervous during your wait. They did say it will take 3-5weeks. Also, if you are past 4 weeks, I think you should call and ask for your status. The mail could have been lost since they sent it thro regular mail.

When I interviewed in late October, they said acceptances are given in 2 weeks. Waitlisted people are notified in 3-5 weeks.

Going off of SDN, and some of the people from my interview group that I emailed. No one received wait list or rejection letters. Between all the holidays and other obligations, the committee hasnt been able to get together. I'm really starting to think, they just sent a handful of acceptances out to some top applicants, thinking they could be committing to other schools. Just speculation, but i think it makes sense. If someone has really good stats and ECs, it wouldnt take the committee long to agree that person should be accepted, as long as they didnt bomb the interview. Whereas some of the "middle of the road" applicants may require more scrutiny and debate from the committee.

You are probably right. But I do know the class size is around 150. I'm sure most people who deferred did apply -- I know one who isn't going to Touro even though the accepted last year.

Getting an interview is a BIG DEAL at this school -- so just be patient and I also don't think it hurts to call and ask your status. I'm on your side -- this whole process is stressful.

Hang in there, guys.

With the way the Jewish holidays came out this year, October was basically a wash- we didn't have a lot of class and there certainly was not a lot of time for interviews- thus the admissions committee seems to have slowed down in comparison to last year. If you add to that the fact that the current DOA is new and came in over the summer, its understandable that things would not be running as smoothly as they have in years past.

As for how many spots there are/have been filled: its impossible to tell at this point in time how many current Masters students will funnel into the DO program, but I believe there are ~65 Masters students, and at most, half will make it into the program- the school reserves ~35 spots for Masters students. NONE of the current Masters students are guaranteed a spot right now because they have to maintain a 3.5 to even be considered eligible for the DO program and we have not even completed 1 semester yet. There have only been 4 interview dates, so it would be pretty silly to assume that half the class is full.

As has been mentioned- as hard as it is, try to exert some patience- things are clearly moving more slowly this year as the school goes through some growing pains.

Well put, thanks for the insight.

Did anyone from 10/25 or 10/26 interview groups get acceptance letters so far? The school said that accepted applicants would be notified within 2 weeks, and it's almost been 2 weeks...so I was just wondering. Good luck to everyone.

Until I get an acceptance, rejection, or wait-listed letter in my hand, I don't know what believe or go off of.

I interviewed 10/25 and haven't heard anything yet. As far as I know the time frame is 3-5 weeks and they had a convention the first week so I'm assuming that will push it back.

Interviewed on 10/5...approaching the 5 week mark

time to start calling? I don't know if it would do any good

Just got offered a secondary. It seems this one is much more expensive than other schools. is it like in past years if you receive a secondary it is an automatic interview invite?

We were told at the 10/5 interview that they would make a decision between 2 weeks and 2 months. It has only been a little over a month.

Would you choose this school over MSUCOM?

Between 2 weeks and 2 months? I don't remember hearing that time frame mentioned. I know they hired a new DOA this summer, but this process has seemed a little unorganized to the say the least. After my interview, I walked away really liking the school. I'd still love to go here, though I'm not pleased with the situation. Why have interviews on 10/5 & 10/6 if they didn't have time to go over the applicants b/c of holidays and conventions, etc. Furthermore, they obviously had some time to look over a few people in order to send out some acceptance letters. So why not let the other knows if they are wait-listed, rejected or possibly "on hold". Frustrating doesn't begin to describe it...

I'm not sure, but I'd still like to know if Touro is an option. I really liked the school on the tour.

They told us straight out at our interview that the only score they seriously look at on the MCAT = the BS score. They said they kinda look at the PS score and basically don't care about the verbal score. :[ Any chance of retaking it as early as possible next year? They technically just started interviewing this month, so there could still be space?

I can also confirm this. The Dean of Student Affairs told us (interviewees) that we were selected for interview since our BS section of MCAT was 9+. Although your other sections and GPA is good, the fact that you are bio major and bombed on BS will raise ton of questions.
I was initially given interview with 26Q 10PS 10BS 6VR (although I improved all my section scores for the 2nd mcat), so you could kinda say that VR don't matter as much as your BS score.

I am a non-sci major and got an 8 on my bio and received a secondary. Should i fill it out if this is the case? I really dont want to pay $200 if my app is just going to be thrown out.

Also ive searched through most of the thread but couldnt find an exact answer as to whether secondary=interview. Could someone clear that up?

It doesn't appear that secondary=interview this year.

I posted this on the wrong thread earlier:

I got an interview and still have to select the date. I hate that TOURO requires such an exorbitant deposit to hold your spot if you get accepted and then only gives you two weeks to do so. My stats are a 3.6(AACOMAS) and a 32R. Does anyone think I should be safe waiting until a January date to schedule my interview and still get in or should I go ahead and choose a December date? Please let me know what your strategies are for dealing with this. Thanks!!!

Is this the general consensus for this year? If so, I just received a secondary today that I will probably sit on instead of rushing back as funds are beyond low at this point..

I interviewed late october and i would have to say this is the most unorganized school ever! granted they are new.. but i mean Touro isn't exactly a new place, just the DO program is new. They could not seem to get it together during our interview day. Half of the people got an email saying it started at 9, half the people got an email saying it started at 8. They said in the email it would end at 1pm, the day of agenda said 2pm and we didn't actually finish until 3pm, and some people even left before it was over! It was like they didn't have anything planned, we sat around A LOT and the dean of student affairs straight up asked me my MCAT score in front of EVERYONE before we started interviewing to "show" everyone how to answer the interview questions "directly and normally". It was really uh.. awkward to say the least.

I was really excited about Touro, i loved the Dean, the location and it seems like they have a great program in the works. Luckily i got accepted to PCOM (where the Dean of Touro actually went..) so i won't be attending even if they do accept me.

So to everyone who is worrying about their secondary or II, just hold tight. Their administrative department leaves something to be very much desired and it's definitely not you, it's the school.

frothy exposé. all fair criticisms, with one caveat- the workings and administration of the admissions office is entirely separate from the rest of the school.

oh of course. like i said, they have a great program, all very smart people, all the professors i met seemed great, and clearly their first graduating class had an impressive match list... i'm just saying that asking someone their MCAT score in front of their entire interview group is unprofessional. I was also just saying that they didn't have it together on the interview day and so therefore, people shouldn't be stressing as hard if they haven't heard back in their suggested time frame because things are disorganized over there.

that being said, i still think the program sounds incredible, they give you a powerpoint presentation at the end that was actually super informative and super interesting as to how they do grades, and how they monitor each student's success. They definitely will produce capable, smart doctors.

hope that clears up any discrepancy.

Wait, I was there today, and left after we came back to the 5th floor after the curriculum powerpoint at around 2:20. There was no one in that conference room. Was there something after that? I also got the email that it started at 9:00.
