TOUROCOM NY Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
As for now, you will need the car for years 3-4. We currently don't have rotations in Manhattan and so public transportation isn't as reliable. As far as I know they're in Jersey, upstate NY, and Staten Island. I know they're working on Harlem Hospital, but that's still in the future. But just wait, Doc will be with you shortly 🙂

just hold to your car. you will def need it, and esp since you already have one (even if you decide to live in the city during years 3-4); it will come in use during at least your 2 months of surgery. You will also need it 4th year since you will be doing audition rotations (where ever you decide to do them) and they can be all over the place.

For rotations: i live in the city and public transportation doesn't run that early or takes too long...is def not an excuse you should try to use with your residents.:boom:

ah shoot. that means I'll have to learn how to drive/get a car? 🙁

if you don't own one already and u dont want to buy one u can commute using public transportation (depending on where your rotations are) and then rent a car during the months you really need it. either way, somewhere down the line, you will need to know how to drive a car/own a car.

Hey all, I remember that there was a specific sdn thread for class of 2016 people...can anyone provide me a link for it? Also, is there a facebook page for 2016 yet?

I have a couple of questions regarding when the first class starts, deadline for the 1st year tuition fee, etc...so I was hoping to find the answers there. Thanks!

Not to worry, this happened to me as well. I would call Mr. Perez and leave him a short voicemail. It would be helpful to include your AACOMAS ID. His extension is listed when you call Touro's main number. Feel free to PM me if you want the details.

This happened to me also. I called Mr. Perez and he gave me my status over the phone. This is his number: 212.851.1199 Ext. 2589

Hi there,

After all my angst, I paid my big deposit to Touro on the 5th and got a letter from PCOM on the 6th saying no thanks. I played my cards right. Now without having to wonder what might have been, I can wholeheartedly look forward to going to medical school in New York!

So psyched!

Who else reckoned by the 5th to join the class?

Yay! Congrats! I still haven't gotten my official letter in the postal mail yet; I wonder if the deadlines still apply? hmmm...

Yes they absolutely do. Last year I was accepted in October- only got an email. In March I got the letter in the mail.

I never received any written notification, e-mail or postal and I interviewed in November. Admissions did return my call after 3 days and told me my status over the phone, but I have yet to receive anything written over a month later. After rounds of phone tag, voicemails and multiple e-mails in attempt to get things sorted, I decided to make a deposit at another school instead. Hope the seat goes to someone else!

I don't know what's going on, but I received another secondary today. I withdrew from my interview in november.

Hi all.

I have an interview for Touro NY on Feb 8. Can anyone give me some tips on what types of questions they will be asking for the interview. Or just a list of interview questions I should have a good solid answer to? This is my first interview and I am really nervous. Any help is appreciated..! Thanks!

Most MDs don't know about oral health. I was at homeless shelters and we needed to refer a lot to dentist. Congratulations. I received my Pharm.D. in 2009 and matriculated into a Lcme MD school. So i understand how it is to enroll another professional school. Good luck.

Thank you. I look forward to starting school again in June.

After going through this thread, I've summarized the thread:

Getting a secondary takes a long time, so keep waiting. Getting a hold of Joseph Perez (DOA) or his assistant Issa Sow is impossible. Once you fill out the secondary, they work really fast, though.

Interview dates: 10/5, 10/6, 10/26, 10/27, 11/9, 11/16, 11/17, 11/29, 11/30, 12/1, 12/6, 12/7, 12/14, 12/15, 1/24, 1/25, 1/26, and four in Feb.

As of 12/5, there were ~180 interviewed and ~80 acceptances (including deferred acceptances from last year and ~65 masters students, half of which get an auto in barring bad grades). It appeared that since the Dean of Admissions Joseph Perez is new, things were working a little slow in the beginning, but now it appears you have 2 weeks to get an acceptance letter in the mail and 3-5 weeks to get a waitlist letter in the mail. I believe last year 500 were interviewed for 200 acceptances, for a class of 135. There were acceptances from interviews in April of last year, so keep on interviewing if you can.

Anything I'm missing or need to update?

That's a good summary you did there. For those waiting for an acceptance, don't be waiting for a phone call. Some get it, others don't.

Also, I read that they may be cutting down the amount of masters students that matriculate into MS-1, due to poor overall performance of those students, though I didn't hear this one first hand. Potentially good news for those who have yet to interview, since the class is filling up rather quickly.

Hey all, just wanted to do my part and share my stats with you guys since you've all been so helpful to me.

26Q (10BS, 8PS, 8VS), 3.45 cumulative/3.37 sci, NJ resident

Supplemental Complete 10/27, Interview Invite 1/4

Because I didn't hear anything from them in a while, I emailed Issa Sow after Christmas day about my Supplemental App status. Luckily he replied saying it was complete and invited me to interview for 2/7.

Hope this helps! Don't give up hope! Good luck to everyone still waiting!

I cancelled my interview for Touro on Feb 7. Hope that opens up an opportunity for someone 🙂

Does anyone know if this school is military friendly?

Also, I intend to serve as a military physician first and then practice in an underserved community (I am from such a community). Would mentioning this during my interview hurt my chances of acceptance? Should I just leave the military part out?

pretty decent number of military people on campus and the recruiters are around at the start of each school year. I imagine it would be a pretty positive thing, especially the way you framed it, to mention it given the number of military students around.

Sounds good. I was concerned that it may seem negative as this school states that it "is committed to identifying and recruiting students who have specific interest in practicing in undeserved communities, such as Harlem" and I will not be able to help them achieve that mission immediately upon completion of residency.

do they really accept people with a 26? so should i be a shoe-in with a 31 mcat score, 3.5science and 3.7 overall from a well-known top science research school? i got an email from Issa Sow asking for the last missing piece of my application(a reference from an osteopathic physician, which im sending this week)...do you think this shows they have a real interest? also my advisor told me to make sure i let the DO schools know im not not applying as a backup to MD...should i really do that, it sounds belittling to me, in my mind the DO profession is on equal grounds to MD

Well there are no guarantees in life and its kind of late in the application season.

Hey everyone, I wasnt sure where to post this, but I have an interview at Touro Harlem on February 15 and wanted to possibly meet up with any current students before my interview to talk about the school. I fly in on February 14 and wanted to either grab lunch, dinner, or a drink. Anybody want a free meal? Message me and we can make it happen.

wow. I wish I wasnt coming back from an AMA meeting in washington DC that day.

I love helping out potential students and free food.

Would you be available the night of the 14? or know if anyone else who could take me up on my offer? Thanks!

24 mcat and 3.6 gpa...should i send in my secondary this late in the process?

Can someone please tell me the format of the interview day? I have an upcoming interview and saw the schedule in the email but I was wondering if someone who attended had a more specific one. Also, if it says interviews are 30 minutes each, why are there two hours allotted to interviews on the schedule in the email? Does this mean the same two interviewers are interviewing the entire group one at a time? Another question: about how many people are in each interview group?

Thanks for your help 🙂

You will interview with 2 people at once (usually one person from the academic side and one from the clinical side). There's 3 different pairs of interviewers so you'll interview with one of them at some point during that 2 hour time slot. The rest of that 2 hours will be spent with financial counseling, and just sitting around until everyone is done. And not everyone's interview lasted the full 30 minutes (seemed like 20 min was more standard). In the beginning of the cycle there were 12 poeple in each interview group, but in December they started having 18 in each group. Hope this helps! And good luck!🙂

24 mcat and 3.6 gpa...should i send in my secondary this late in the process?

Keep in mind 1) they've supposedly increased their statistics and your MCAT score is well below the mean, 2) they've got the most expensive secondary, 3) interviews are out to at least Feb/Mar by now = dangerously close to wait list territory, and 4) most of the class has already been filled via traditional applicants as well as their masters students.

At this point I think you'd stand a better chance at other Osteopathic schools that haven't filled their classes quite so quickly, but if money ain't a thang, then by all means, go for it.

Or there's always next cycle.

Interviewing in a couple days and was just wondering if the interview is open file or closed?

In the interview feedback most people put it was closed, but reading this thread, it seems this year it's open file.

Can anyone clear this up?

I just interviewed there and it seemed that they had reviewed my file prior to interviewing me. They didn't have my file with them, but they talked about things on my resume that led me to believe they had seen it before.

anyone waitlisted here get the email from mr perez stating that we are still on the wl??

Hey, I will be withdrawing my acceptance once my files are finalized in other school. Good luck to everyone and hopefully someone from WL can take my spot.
TouroNY is awesome school and I will definately miss my chance learning from Dr. Fisher and some other amazing profs....Will definately miss eating at all the great places in NY lol

They are giving straight acceptances still. I just interviewed last week and received an acceptance today.

Good luck to all the interviewees this 24th, 25th, and 26th!

I'll be in the group on the 26th. If anyone wants to hang out for a beer or something on the 27th, my plane doesn't leave until 6pm and I got all day. 👍

interviewed 26th, accepted, whos looking for apartments

hi everyone so i applied really late..in december but i got an interview date finally...on feb 23rd......im just wondering what kind of questions i should expect, i was told it is going to be a panel style interview with an academic professor there...should i expect bio questions?
Also i know they already accepted a lot of students i was wondering from who was expected what are your mcat scores and gpa's just so i know the range of what they are looking for...i only applied to four schools, all late, got interview for two of them, UMDNJ and TOURO, still waiting on NYCOM and PCOM....and my stats are 31 mcat, 3.5 science gpa, 3.7 overall...two co-authored journal published papers, with minimal volunteer work which is my weakpoint.

"volunteer work is important" is one of the biggest lies that has ever been perpetuated amongst pre-meds. No one cares how much you have, only that you have some exposure to medicine. This is definitely true for both UMDNJ and TouroCOM. Don't worry about your volunteer work.

youre pretty lucky man. i hope that luck lends itself to the interview.

I was wondering if anyone here have sent in their applications at least several months ago, but still haven't gotten their secondary checks cashed?

Hello! I'm interviewing on Feb 22nd and I'm really nervous. Someone posted earlier about the types of questions that will be asked in the interview and I was hoping someone could elaborate on that further. This is my first interview and I don't really know what to expect. Thanks!!!

I submitted my secondary early january, it was confirmed as received on Jan 18th.

When did u submit, when was it confirmed as received and how long after that did you receive an invite? I am pretty anxious, so this would help me a ton!

It seems like Feb is filling up

Are they only doing acceptances and waitlisting or do they also reject people after the interview? I've read through the posts about people getting acceptances and being waitlisted but doesn't seem like anyone has been straight up rejected.... kinda makes it seem like everyone who isn't given a spot is waitlisted? Also, to all those who are waitlisted, is it ranked as of now or is it still a generic "you've been waitlisted" (no high, medium, low)

Last year it was high and medium. Then the High wait list was numerically ranked. Near the end of the cycle a few people were offered guaranteed spots for 2016, but that had nothing to do with your number on the wait list.
