TOUROCOM NY Discussion Thread 2011-2012

Is it correct that this year Touro received over 10,000 applications? That's what the dean told us at our interview, but that seems a bit high, no?

~4,000 to 10,000 would seem like a pretty big jump, but it wouldn't shock me, based on the first article. The school is now accredited and the first graduating class landed some very respectable residencies. If I had to guess I would say its a slight over-exaggeration, but the actual data hasn't been posted yet and probably won't be for a while.

I would believe it just because of location. I'm sure alot of people apply there just because it is in NYC and is easier to pick as a backup than a school in the middle of nowhere.

The average MCAT/GPA for this year's incoming class is going to be 30/3.5

Not sure if that really qualifies as a "backup" school.

I've been on the waitlist for a couple months now. Does anyone know if the class is filled? Im feeling hopeless :scared:

It wasn't as of last week but I know they interviewed alot of people last week so I'm sure its getting closer.

I interviewed last week and got put on the waitlist via snail mail today. During our interview we were told the committee would meet as soon as we finished interviewing and letters would be printed that night and mailed the following morning.

Anyone know when they start releasing waitlist rankings?

Keep in mind 1) they've supposedly increased their statistics and your MCAT score is well below the mean

Care to share your source?

The stats for the class of 2015 were an MCAT of 25 and a sci and cum GPA of 3.3, which is actually lower than the class of 2013 whose stats were an MCAT of 27 and a sci/cum GPA of 3.2 and 3.3 respectively. I dont understand why people keep saying this school is very competitive.

Went to an interview a couple weeks ago.

The president told us that since they received so many applications (close to 10,000) this year's incoming class would have an average MCAT of 30 and average cumulative GPA close to 3.5.

He said his goal is to make this school not only one of the top DO schools in the country, but one of the top med schools within the next few years.

Whether that will happen still remains to be seen.

Waitlist letter arrived today via snail mail (interviewed 1/26). I know there's at 4 interview dates in February to go through still, so I would figure waitlist rankings won't come out until after that.

Same here. Did your letter say "I am pleased to inform you that you have been placed on the Wait List...."? The letter made it sound like being on the wait list is a good thing.

I see. He told us about the number of applications as well but he didn't mention the stats. If those stats are true then that is very impressive for a DO school.

You won't get a wait list ranking until June, if they follow what they did last year.

That's what the letter said last year. It moved fairly quickly at the beginning because quite a few people drop off the wait list. Then at the end of the movement a few people were given admission for 2016 and it was independent of rank on the wait list.

When did you interview, on the 26th?

Yep. Did yours say the same?

I interviewed the 26th too, I don't have the letter in front of me but it said something to the effect of "congratulations, you have been placed on the wait list for the class of 2012".

Honestly if they really received 10,500 applications then making the waitlist is an accomplishment in itself.

Guess its time to start studying for an MCAT retake while I finish up my other interviews and wait for news.

Good luck everyone...keep your chins up.

Going from a 3.3/25 to a 3.5/30 in one year is a huge jump. The stats would be almost on par with some lower-end MD schools. It's a huge feat and for now, I take this with a grain of salt until I see some actual figures.

They just better hope I don't end up taking their acceptance 😀

Yep. Did yours say the same?

Yep. I got the Touro-NV letter in the mail the exact same day (today), and they had, word for word, the exact same contents, starting with the "pleased to inform you of your waitlist spot" as well as the paragraph explaining remaining interviews/acceptances/withdrawls/waitlist pulls, etc.

Who were you guys? I was the photography guy from Idaho.

I didn't realize that the stats for 2015 were that low. It's a competitive school in terms of the number of spots...~100 a year. the remaining spots go to deferrals and master's students. the stats are low because master's students need a much lower mcat score (if any...at one point it was a 15-16 on Bio + Physics/chem and they did not care about verbal for them) and they may have had low undergrad gpas, hence the master's program.

Do they definitely rank the waitlist? I never got a snail mail, only an email, but it seems to be worded a bit differently then the pieces other people posted of theirs. The email I got seems to indicate they do not rank the waitlist. Here is the last half of it:

"In recognition of your credentials, your application is currently on the wait list.

The Admissions Department will be revisiting your current admissions status throughout the application cycle and will communicate with you if any changes to your status occur. Although we do not use a ranking order system, your application will be reviewed base upon credentials. We recognize that you have a desire to pursue a career in medicine and, in that regard; we hope that you continue with your pursuit of health education.

"
Did other peoples waitlist mail/email say that they do?

Has anybody received an acceptance who has interviewed on the 26th or recently? Sounds like the competition is getting tougher with the remaining interviews.

I haven't gotten anything in the mail yet. Maybe it will come today...I sat next to you though...I'm the nurse. That waitlist letter is a standard letter that's been used at touro for years apparently (if you just check out old threads you will see the same wording). I got the same one from the mare island campus a few months ago (but they rank the waitlist).

my snail mail was same as your email

When did you guys get these letters? Mine was the "Pleased to inform you" version. It doesn't mention ranking but says they "will be sending you regular updates which you should find helpful". Obviously the only update that would be helpful to any of us is one that quantifies our current position so we know if we are 5 spots away from an admission or 500.

From looking at last years waitlist thread it seemed like they sent all the "High" wait listed people a number and then updated them as they went along. So if you were number 100 and 20 acceptances were sent out you are now 80. They seemed to do this until the class finally filled up in July.

I also interviewed 1/26. Still waiting for a letter or an email. I wonder why some people already got them (email or regular mail) and some people are still waiting.

Hey guys..I'm interviewing tomorrow and I was wondering if they switched to a group format for the interview? I'm asking because as I was going through the Interview Feedback section, the last review from 1/19 was group so was just curious if this is the case or if they're doing both styles.

I also got my acceptance today, I was the short white guy who went to the bathroom a zillion times, who are you? Congrats

Also got an acceptance. Only dude with glasses on the 24th - also a short white guy. I know exactly who you are McDab! Talk to you on g-chat!

FIRST ACCEPTANCE!

from the time you were complete, how long did it take for you to receive an invite?

It'd be great if anyone could give some insight into how long it takes.

If there have really been 10,000 apps, yikes....so 200x 10,000= 2 million dollars in secondary fees...that's insane =O

well if everyone were to receive a secondary app AND everyone turned it back in

but still, that's a lot of apps...so anyone can tell me how long between completion notification and interview invite?

^^ Secondary sent 11/25, interview invite 12/14. Seems to be about average for others here. I'd really suggest reading the whole thread! You might find good things to know!

Surely you didn't assume 10,000 to be the number of secondary applications. I would believe that they could possibly receive that many primary applications.

Submitted primary 9/15. Secondary Invite 11/9. Secondary Received 11/15. Invite 11/17.

FIRST ACCEPTANCE!

Interviewed on 1/24 as well. Received the acceptance yesterday evening in the mail. That envelope was disturbingly thin.

Stats: 30P, 3.4-3.7 GPA, well-balanced extra-curriculars, and a lot of enthusiasm for and connection to the school. Applicants with low stats have gotten in this cycle, but I'm sure you'll see a jump in GPA and MCAT scores for matriculants this cycle.

yeah im the asian dude on the 24th. Mcat 30. Gpa 3.3 sGpa 3.67 - Biomedical Engineer. clinical work, soon to be author on a paper, lots of medical volunteer work 6 years research.

Submitted primary 11/8. Secondary Invite 11/9. Secondary Received 11/15. Invite 11/17. Interview 1/24. Accepted letter dated 1/26 Received on 1/30

I do hope the avg Mcat score comes up it would be nice to be at least 27 again.

To all you that haven't gotten in yet put in the work you can do anything if you try hard enough. Remember this school is very focused on the community so try to reflect that.

To my fellow group that got accepted. Congrats! It was nice meeting you all. Maybe well all be classmates! 😛

Good luck to you all.

Hey all - reply to the osteopathic class threads group for TOURO. Lets get a facebook group going.

Damn sounds like the 24th was the day to interview! You guys all got in, congrats! Did anyone from the 26th get in?

I was complete 10/27 and received II 11/17. I was impressed by the dedication they have to their students. ..seems like they really care about how well prepared the students are for the COMLEX. Hoping to hear back next week.

If this helps, I interviewed on the 26th (Thursday) and received my acceptance letter via snail mail (a very thin letter) this past Monday. I live in California.

Oops I accidentally replied through my friend's sdn account, so ignore that it says pre-pharm...

New policy is students who do not get at least a 500 on the COMSAE (practice test administered by the school in early May) will not be allowed to take the COMLEX until they score above a 500 on the COMSAE

I'm watching to see how this policy evolves throughout the year. Some people with the highest COMLEX scores in the past have scored very low on the COMSAE multiple times.

The policy of a 500 is ludicrous. I barely got 400 on my comsae but got over 600 on the comlex. less than half of the people in my class got above 500 on their comsae; most of them ended up passing the real exam. they should lower it to 400 or 450.

Congrats! Just taking a guess - are you the one I partnered up with during the iClicker session?
