TUCOM CA Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Apparently, Touro-NY has a $175 secondary fee.

Does anyone know if Touro-California's is just as high?

I just received my secondary from this University. I see that the application fee is $100, and this is pretty high. They require TWO letters of recommendation from professors if you do not have one from a premedical committee. I have four very good letters in total including an MD I shadowed (no DO), but I only have one from a professor (I think its a pretty good one even though I haven's seen it of course). Is it worth the $100 risk to apply? Do they look at your application if you don't have the two letters? My scores are ok, and my extracurriculars are impressive including awards and publications. Any advice?

If you don't send the second letter from a professor they'll consider your application incomplete and not look at you until they have what they want. I've been warned about that. I would find another teacher to send a letter for you and have them send it directly to TUCOM. BUT be sure they accept letters like that. Some schools wont and want it thru a letter service. Either way, even if you don't know another professor well, just get it for the requirement. Find a class you got a good grade in and ask that teacher for a simple letter. You have your other letters that describe you in depth.

Secondary en route... disappointingly little talk on this thread so I thought I'd add this mundane detail:

What a weird secondary -- they mail it, but insist that it be typewritten, so you have to go to their Web site, fill it out, then print from the form, then mail it.

Just got it today, and yes I was so confused when I read that at the top of the paper version of the app. Why bother paying postage to send this to us? lol.

Edit: Also, I have to say, I really hate it when apps ask both "Explain why you have chosen to apply to our school." and "Why should we accept you into our class?". I always feel like my answers overlap for some reason.

"9. WHAT AWARD(S) OR RECOGNITION(S) HAVE YOU RECEIVED IN COLLEGE?"

Do you think I could put down that my research abstract was accepted for poster presentation at a pretty prestigious conference this fall? Is this considered a "recognition"? I don't have any other awards or anything.

when u guys fill out the online application, do the boxes stop u from typing before u reach the end of the line? or is that just me

and do u really only have that amount of lines to answer the questions?

Yes and yes.

I'm assuming we just re-post what we put on our primary with regards to their awards/volunteering questions?

Hoping to send this one out tomorrow.

So I got a letter in the mail from Touro today. It stated,

"Recently we received your AACOMAS application, which did not include an adequate mcat score or did not include an mcat score".

They then go on to say that I can fax my score to speed up the process. My stats are 3.96 GPA and 24O MCAT. I know schools recieved my mcat score last week, but I'm not sure when. The letter was dated for Monday. Did I really just get denied from a secondary with a 24? I know it's low, but I applied since all stats on their webpage say at least a 23, and I thought my gpa might help along with all my extra curriculurs.

Side note, the envelope was addressed to me, but the letter was addressed to some random girl in a different state.

Cant wait until monday so I can call and figure this out! :/

What do you mean schools received your MCAT scores last week? Did you just take the MCAT?

I got my score June 22nd, but by the time AACOMAS got my score, my app had been verified and sent out without. Therefore, schools recieved my mcat scores 2 weeks after recieving my application (I have no idea what took them so long).

So.. I'm wondering if that's why they claim they don't have my score yet. But then again, the letter had another girl's name on it. I was just wondering if anyone knew of them cutting out people with a 24 for a secondary. Their website has always said 23 or higher..

I see.

If you got a 24, and their website says 23, I would guess they just didn't receive your MCAT score (they probably did physically - as that only takes a day or two, but no one at their office checked for new ones yet).

Another possibility is they go by MCAT sections, not just the total. So, they may screen out anyone with a 6 or below (I'm just guessing that the requirement would be a 7 or above) on any of the three sections. If your MCAT was a 8/7/9 or 8/8/8, you should be good.

Thanks for the info DrDre! My mcat was 7/9/8. I'll update monday on how my phone call goes. I'm hoping I wasn't screened out so soon.

UPDATE::: Got the secondary in the mail today. Never was got the chance to contact someone by phone. Looks like they found the mistake themselves. Thank goodness!

Many, if not most schools require you to submit two letters of recommendation from science professors if you do not have a committee letter. This is probably something you should have looked into in the College Information Book prior to submitting your application. See if you can get that additional letter.

Can someone post the essay questions please? I couldn't find them on the website and am still waiting for my transcripts to be sent (damn quarter-system large public schools in California...)

Thanks lots!

The essay is
(You will need to print this page for reference, then use your own word processing program or typewriter to formulate your response. Statements should be a maximum of one full computer generated, double spaced page, with a minimum font size of 12. Attach your response to your supplemental application)

Describe your exposure to and understanding of Osteopathic Medicine. Content may include your initial introduction to the profession, its history, use in medical practice today, or any other aspects that may highlight Osteopathic Medicine's uniqueness and synergy with your envisioned future practice of medicine.

I got a "file incomplete" postcard and the supplemental application on the same day. I just thought that was funny

I got a file complete postcard showing 7/13. Now just a waiting game.

FWIW, the application that they send you does not have the full page double spaced guidelines so be careful when writing. I wrote more and contacted them because of it.

Are you sure it's supposed to be double-spaced?

You are correct when you it doesn't mention double spacing on the application that they send to you. But, it also doesn't say that on the one online. I pasted this directly from their application that is online:

"18. PERSONAL STATEMENT - PLEASE INCLUDE, WITH YOUR APPLICATION, A RESPONSE TO THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT:(You will need to print this page for reference, then use your own word processing program to formulate a one page, computer-generated response. Attach your response to your supplemental application)
Describe your exposure to and understanding of Osteopathic Medicine. Content may include your initial introduction to the profession..."

They may have removed it, I remember reading on the application that I did submit saying it was supposed to be double spaced. Who knows, I e-mailed them and they said they didn't care.

Weird. I see. I was going to email them about it if it was supposed to be double spaced. But, I guess there is no reason to now that I see that it isn't specified anyway.

for the love of god, do not press enter at the end of a line. instant removal of everything you've just typed.

This happened to me as well, but simply hitting the back button will undo the removal of entered information 🙂

that was the first thing i did. and at least for me, it swapped the location of everything. I graduated from Automotive maintenance (hobby), in year A lol....

I'm using chrome, so maybe people had better reactions in other browsers...

I just got a "complete" email today. Has anyone been offered an interview yet? This thread is so quiet!

You got an e-mail????? WOW you must be special. They only ever mail anything lol I got a complete postcard back in July saying I was complete 7/13. No interview invites yet but hopefully soon

I just got notification of my acceptance for next year. I was on the waitlist and was granted early acceptance.

I imagine that now that that process is over, providing that all early acceptances were decided upon today, the process for interviews and such will speed up.

Lets hear it for the class of 2015! I made it!

hi
new to this thread, but reading from last year's thread, people seems to be already getting interviews by this time. wonder why they're so slow this year.. ah getting impatient

congrats! how were you notified?

I was sent an email. I expect the paperwork via snail-mail to get here today or tomorrow.

I imagine had I not sent an email back right away they would've called me to inform me of my decision, but I don't know.

They also did not say anything about whether they made all the decisions already or not.

Good luck.

Maybe they just got the Internet installed??!?!?

I got a complete postcard a few weeks back... that's about it!

Haha I think this school just recently discovered the interweb. Based on their secondary it seems like they're just learning how to use it.

interviews are not scheduled to begin until late September
best of luck all!

Thanks for the info. I'm guessing they should be sending out invites any day now if they are expecting interviews to be in the end of Sept., because it's starting to get late for those dates. If they are still using usps, then the CA residents will probably hear first.

interview invite!! def lookin forward to traveling to CA 🙂

Me too because the best part is that I can stay with family friends and probably use their car because they are awesome haha, so I can save money 😀

👍 Thanks. Congrats on your 8 freaking interviews! ridiculous! lol
