OOS acceptors, why did you choose Tufts over your IS? I'm struggling with my decision. I like Tufts more than my in-state, it has a much higher hospital caseload, newer and larger facilities, near my undergrad and friends, and SO's job. With SO and I's salaries out of school, it would only take a year or two longer to pay off Tufts than my IS but I still am not sure if the cost difference is worth it.
I'm OOS and was accepted elsewhere, for me I chose Tufts because on my interview day it was obvious that the entire community was very supportive, both inside and outside of academics. Plus the wildlife clinic and international research options were a huge perk because I'm really interested in those! But the cost is a very real factor to take a look at. A year or two longer to pay it off isn't *that* much longer but it's still a good amount of time where you'll be having to put aside money constantly just to pay it off, and with COVID right now there's always the chance that an economic crisis starts and that makes everything more difficult for the future:shrug: If you're still debating, I'd be happy to answer any other specific questions you have that might help you make up your mind!

Sorry if this is a clueless question but does anyone know if we are able to switch to in state tuition after a year?

Declined my OOS spot today. I really loved the school but I got an offer from another school that I loved just as much and they gave me more money. I love all you guys and wish everyone the best of luck in this crazy vet school journey 😍

Hey guys! I am on the waitlist. Wondering if I can be taking my classes pass/fail this semester or if Tufts wants grades?
I would reach out to admissions and ask them what they prefer! I honestly don't know what they're looking for right now in terms of grades

Declined my oos spot today, which broke my heart a little because I'm from New England and want very much to come home, but for my mental health it's better for me to be at a school that's integrated into a large campus. Plus I simply couldn't justify the cost when compared to my in state. I'm sure the person who gets my spot in the class will have a wonderful experience at Tufts as I think it's a really special place.

Does anyone know how and when they will inform OOS alternates if they are offered a spot or not? I know decisions are due tomorrow, but that's all I know. Thanks to anyone who can answer 🙂

If you get called off they will give you a phone call! As for when they’ll let you know that depends on where you are on their list (which we don’t get to know) and how many people they need. So really anytime from the 15th until August is fair game to my knowledge. However, I was told by admissions that after May the list really doesn’t move much anymore so if you haven’t heard you should start working on your new application.

Have any alternates heard back yet? Just wondering if enough people have declined for the waitlist to start moving

Does anyone have experience with commuting to campus? My boyfriend will be doing his PhD at the Tufts Medford campus and we were looking to live together somewhere in the middle. We were looking at somewhere around Framingham or Wayland or something like that; does anyone know how feasible this is?

Most people in my class live pretty close to the school, but I do know some students that live 40 minutes+ away! The house I live in is 6 minutes from the campus, but I occasionally dogsit in Ashland which is 30 minutes from the school and I've had no problems with getting to classes in the morning as long as I leave on time. I also know some students who took the train in to campus, the Grafton T stop is right next to campus so that makes for a pretty easy commute if you don't have a car!

Hey just wanted to let the other alternates know that I heard back from admissions regarding waitlist movement. They told me that right now their class is too full (their target is 100) so it seems unlikely that they will be calling people from the waitlist this year.

Did they say how many over the 100 they are?

I'm a MA resident, and the financial aid package showed only a $2500 discount for in-state, with the disclaimer that that discount may increase. As of now, the change in in-state tuition from last year to this year is huge. Does anyone know if this discount typically increases significantly/when we'll know if there will be a change?

Isn’t it common knowledge that Tufts’ in state “discount” is a joke? I think it used to be closer to $5000, which is definitely better than $2500. I feel badly for MA people that they don’t get a better deal...

It is pretty much a joke unfortunately. I was looking at the tuition for 2019-2020 though, and in-state tuition was around $51,000, compared to an estimated ~$58,500 for 2020-2021. That's a huge jump, so I was hoping they gave a similar conservative estimate for MA discount last year and ended up giving us a lot more off. Otherwise that's going to be a very alarming tuition raise each year.

Hey! I actually live in Framingham with my boyfriend who goes to school in Boston. It’s less than a 25 minute drive and really isn’t too bad! I’m always traveling against traffic. I would say that it’s not really a great “half-way” point, as my boyfriends commute is much longer than mine usually because of traffic

Just a heads up on the commuting bit -- depending on what is going on with covid-19 stuff into the fall, it may not be possible to take public transportation anymore because the school might not allow it. Right now public transportation is a no-no.

The school's travel restriction doesn't affect car travel, so if you were planning to drive, you should be fine.

(Obviously, things could change between now and the fall, so if this applies to you, ask the school for the most up-to-date info.)

Can any current students share how long we typically have off for a lunch break? They said the other day we likely won't get class schedules until late July and I'm trying to look for housing and was wondering what distance I should limit myself to if I want to conceivably get home in the middle of the day to let my dog out. Or should I not worry about this and assume I'll be on campus all day every day regardless.

There's a break from 12:00-1:00 which people usually go home to let out dogs/do whatever. For first year specifically the schedule varies day to day: some days we would have classes from 8:00-4:00 (with the 12-1 lunch break), some days we would no classes in the afternoon, etc. The only thing that shortened the lunch break was our clinical skills class that starts around 12:30-12:45, but that was only one day a week (and we didn't have it every week). I know a lot of people who have dogs and go back to their houses to let them out so it's definitely feasible, but they all live fairly close to the school!

Awesome, thank you!
