Better start a new thread, rather than hi-jack the other one completely. But yes Trinity, I agree with you, back in the day, where every night each network had its share of 4 multi-cam sitcoms, Frasier was the best, smartest writing to come out of that town. Couple of my friends worked on it, one of my first scripts ever was a Frasier sample...

So, let's kick this baby off... What do busy doctors/residents/med students like to watch?
I told you my list already. But I'll restate as this is a new thread:

D712 FANTASTIC LIST
- Breaking Bad (unreal storylines, acting, writing, directing this has everything)
- Homeland (only 12 eps have aired, catch up on them fast, this show is nothing short of brilliant. clare danes, mandy patinkin (sp?). probably my favorite show.
- Weeds (Justin Kirk steals scenes like nobody else, witty, irreverent, love the writing)
- Archer (lord, incredibly funny 1/2 hour animated primetime series on FX. if you have a sense of humor and don't get offended, and like James Bond kinda stuff, check it out.)
- Californication (losing its steam sadly, but David Duchovny can still hold a show, and they have some steam left in the engine).
- Hell on Wheels (love it all, really great stuff)
- American Horror Story (so campy, it's perfection, first season was set in a house with a history, next season will be ALL new characters (except 2) and a new setting. Created by Glee peeps, and done VERY well.
Jessica Lange deserved an Emmy.
- Curb Your Enthusiasm (funny, semitic humor).

D712 90s FANTASTIC LIST
Seinfeld
Murphy Brown
Wonder Years
Will and Grace
Frasier
Mad About You
Ellen
Everybody Loves Raymond
King of the Hill
OZ (great show)
Homicide (great show)
Law and Order (until Paul Sorvino died, then I was done... haha)
Newsradio
Larry Sanders Show
I'll think of more.

D712 80s FANTASTIC LIST
Brooklyn Bridge
Family Ties
Golden Girls
Cosby Show (I was 10 or 12 in early 80s...)
Miami Vice

These current shows I watch for personal or work reasons. I find the writing and acting on ALL of them to be truly brilliant.
I never thought I'd start a thread like this here, but it's been 1000 posts...what the heck!

Of note, I don't really watch procedurals anymore. Occasionally, I'll watch a Law & Order SVU or Breakout Kings or NCIS:LA or something else just to check out something new, but I'm really fried on the procedural stuff. If anyone is wondering, I'm writing Dramas these days, but I've also done animation and sitcoms.

My favorite shows:

Dexter - although the last few seasons have been a little....off

Game of Thrones: amazing...... If you like drama with some fantasy (less than Lor d of the Rings type fantasy) check it out, although the Books are where its really at.

Used to be into Californication but it kind of got stale to me.

Oh and I second Homeland, season 1 was awesome. When does season 2 hit?

Homeland Season 2 premier 9/30. Mark it down. 🙂

Here are my random shows, in no particular order:

  • Dexter - agree about the last few seasons, but still order showtime for a few months out of the year just for this one.
  • The Walking Dead - anybody who doesn't like zombies isn't a real human.
  • How I Met Your Mother - I don't know what it is that pulls me into this show, but I think it's Neil Patrick Harris... I also how they reference things that have happened in the past. You almost have to watch it from season 1 to get all the jokes.
  • Modern Family - caused me to have some of the biggest laugh out loud moments in a long time.
  • Big Bang Theory - Good, old fashioned, nerd humor.
  • Alcatrz - I've been trying to get into this one, but I'm not a huge fan

I also watch these, although not a whole lot of writing here: 😎

  • Ultimate Fighter - I did Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu years ago, been into UFC since about 2000.
  • Top Shot - The challenges just look like way too much fun.
  • Xtreme 4x4 - I'm ready to have some "fun money" to build some of this stuff

Lol. Just say no to zombies!

How DARE U TALK of unscripted series?!??? They're worse than zombies!
I should have called this thread "SCRIPTED tv shows"

🙂

East Bound and Down
The League
Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Workaholics
South Park

This reminds me, I need to resubscribe to HBO next week ...

There's a huge problem brewing, however. Martin takes YEARS to write each book, and the series is half done, at best. At a book per season, HBO's going to run out of material pretty soon. What then? Drop the story 1/2 way through? Or wait 4-5 years between seasons? It's going to be 2025 by the time the series is finished in print.

And that's all assuming that Martin doesn't pull a Jordan. Which if the last book is any indication, is a real possibility. I'm not sure I even want to see pig jousting on HBO.

South Park

Just watched their 6 Days To Air special, which was interesting.

Law and Order (until Paul Sorvino died, then I was done... haha)

How come I know this, and I'm not a paid or otherwise TV writer? Phil Cerreta (Sorvino) on Law & Order didn't get killed off - he got crippled. Don't you remember when Mike Logan said his partner would "spend the rest of his life on wheels"?

I guess I thought that people "in the biz" had that sort of industry-specific memory, like when Danny Tripp on "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" knew that the words the old guy kept saying were actually the names of the Hollywood 10 (I had figured that out when the guy mentioned "Trumbo").

The Walking Dead - anybody who doesn't like zombies isn't a real human.

It's too bad that every single character on that show is a certifiable *****, and easy to hate for one reason or another. I know we were supposed to hate Shane and his newly empowered nihilistic blonde bimbo, but I preferred him as a zombie, and would have actually liked him if he'd managed to eat Rick too.

I am starting to like the redneck crossbow dude. He's a more interesting character than the rest of those helpless idiot drama queens put together.

I could have swore he got shot in the doorway and died. Either way, I was out.
I have line specific memory for shows I've written. Or cherished.
This was close but no cigar.

Sorely miss Battlestar Galactica.

Honorable mention 30 Rock and Mad Men. (getting tired)

I'll give always Sunny a shout. Liked it.
And I'll add to 90s... 3rd rock from the sun.
Lithgow was great at times!

I have my fingers crossed for an Asian guy and Redneck guy buddy spinoff once the unbelievably inept main cast is killed off

You know what? I can't disagree with you there... and yet I still watch it. 😀 That probably says something about my taste in shows.

Absolutely, he has been my favorite character on that show for some time. I'm still waiting for Michael Rooker to come back, which I heard will happen in season 3. I feel like that show won't be able to sustain itself for very long. It's all going to be the same situations over and over, I'm afraid. I still have some strange draw to watch it, though. 🙂

He's not helpless, but sort of unbelievable ... I'm still getting over him agreeing to be bait in the well incident and the far more unforgiveable sin of trying to push that girlfriend of his away. She's been more window dressing than an actual character, but she's nice to look at, so that's OK.

Redneck guy's hand-deficient brother would be interesting to see again ... I think that's the Michael Rooker characther RT2MD mentioned.

I hate to say it but i watch way too much tv....

My schedule is:

Sunday: Dexter, Curb your enthusiasm, Hung, How to make it in America, Bored to Death, The killing, Breaking Bad, Eastbound and down, The walking dead.

Monday: Weeds, House MD, Nurse Jackie.

Tuesday: Off/Catch up on sunday's shows.

Wednesday: Workaholics.

Thursday: Burn Notice, It's always sunny in philly, Royal Pains, Community, Parks and Rec. The league, The Suits or Suits (a show about high roller lawyers)

And Fri/Sat off.

Great cartoons that are no longer with us and truly missed are The Boondocks, and Metalocalypse.

Archer is great reminds me of Frisky Dingo http://video.adultswim.com/frisky-dingo/thrust-issues.html on Adult Swim...

Thinking about adding Mad Men, Crown of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, The Office, and a few others to the list. That river cabin in the jungle show looks good too.

Archer reminds you of Frisky Dingo because the Creators are one in the same. 🙂

yeah that's what i thought, i was just too lazy to look it up.

Hey do you know the name of a show that was supposed to come out or will come out soon about Jersey City NJ, I think it's a crime drama. I just remember seeing an ad for it in the movies a few months ago but don't recall the title.

Favorite current shows:

Walking Dead
Archer
Game of Thrones

Favorite completed shows:
Band of Brothers (by far)
Firefly
Battlestar Galactica

The only characters that truly bother me on Walking Dead are Lori (schizo) and Sophia's mom (totally helpless). I like Glenn (Asian dude) and Darrell (redneck). I liked Shane before his demise, and Rick only bothers me sometimes (less now that he manned up and did what he should have done 3 episodes ago).

So many good shows.

I've been addicted to Southland for a long time, it finally filled the cop void after The Shield ended. That show has left me shocked multiple times.

I've really enjoyed persons of interests as well.

Fringe had me, lost me, had me again, now I'm not sure.

Funny Shows: The League, Community, It's Always Sunny, Modern Family

Breaking Bad is just unbelievable.

Game Of Thrones is amazing as well

Dexter lost me with Stiles, but I'm sticking with it, after Trinity where do you go?

Justified is fabulous, it makes me want to wear a cowboy hat.

Walking Dead, this season annoyed me up until the final two episodes. It's also seems like this image sums up the general repetitiveness of the show

funny-Walking-Dead-Carl.jpg

Californication, I loved that show, but then I ignored it for a season but now I'm back again and can't get enough. I agree with the person above who said David D is caring it, sometimes I want to quit but the dialogue is just too good.

Shamless, I watch, but when Frank killed the lady who needed a heart transplant I almost stopped watching.

Been trying Grimm and Once Upon A Time, will see.

Too much TV. DVR is like an abusive husband who I can't get away from.

It's all about The Walking Dead and Breaking Bad. They're modern day epics that will endure for generations to come. They're THAT good.

EDIT: This is an aside / random though: anyone else feel like reality TV has been choking out quality written programs for years now? I cannot even count how many reality tv shows are on during prime time each night. I cant help but speculate they're occupying a time & advertisement space that has the potential to be filled by shows with actors, scripts, sets, etc.

Anyone watch Alcatraz? Like? I feel like so many shows try to fill the Lost void.

Oh it's a huge problem. My money is on Martin biting the dust way before he ever gets the 7th (the supposed final book) out. Its too bad too cuz you know no one else can finish his vision in the style he writes. But each book has to take forever to formulate the way he writes so rushing the next two books in the next 3-5 years isn't a great solution either.

I think they will split book 3 into two seasons. That could buy some time.

He might end up like Robert Jordan.

If people on this board have not started watching archer, YOU NEED TO START TONIGHT!

Seriously, it is so very very clever. Did I mention it is witty?

It is the only show that comes close to Arrested Development in the best show ever category. That isn't an opinion, it is fact.

And D712, I'm sad you didn't put AD on your list. Shame on you.

Also, how come you don't like Dexter? Or Mad Men?

I am always looking for shows that I can watch with my kids - we have gone threw a few that I had forgotten were so great. Cosby Show (first few seasons are very funny), Malcom in the Middle (I missed it the first time around....brilliant really), Family Ties - some clever stuff here - and recently we have been making our way through Psych. I love this show and it's reference to pop culture.

Any other clean shows I can watch with them? How about Monk?

Speaking of cancelled shows,

Did anyone ever see the Ben Stiller show? Loved this.

How about Dana Carvey's six episodes of his show? That was pretty good but it was fun to see Steve Carrel and Steph Colbert work together before they were famous on the daily show.

Shows I like:

Modern Family-best comedy writing I think I have ever seen. Even better than Seinfeld.

Community-I like the way they do stuff no other show would do (like a zombie show, a claymation episode etc)

South Park-they just don't care what anybody thinks about them. Nothing is off limits.

Tosh.O-it's America's Funniest Home Videos for grown ups.

The Office used to be on my list. I still watch it but I'm getting close to giving up on it. Just not the same since Michael left.

Up All Night is growing on me. I like Arnett and Applegate together and Maya Rudolph is funnier now than she was on SNL.

Forgot Mad Men, so good. I love the moments where they incorporate famous cultural scenes like Thich Quang Đuc lighting himself on fire to give you a specific sense of time.

Would Grimm or Once Upon a time work? Takes spins on fairy tales, some are darker though, not sure how old your kids are.

One of my very favorite shows from many years ago that never made it was a sitcom with Chris Elliott as a 40ish yr old paper boy who still lived with his parents. It was called "Get a Life."

Holy crap I forgot about this - very funny. I loved Chris Eliot on David Letterman. Remember the Man Under the Stairs? Think of a guy (Chris) popping his head out of the floor, with a miner's hat on, covered in coal - right in the middle of the show - and he yells "Dave, Shaft 9 just fell in!" Oh he was gooooood.

Also, I forgot about Tosh.O. I used to watch religiously. I have missed the last season. I went to his tapping in LA - that was really fun.

If you haven't caught his stand up - completely Serious - check it yo. I think it is probably the best stand up I have seen.

How about Mr Show? (old HBO series) or The Young Ones?

I don't think you watch to much TV, I think you just watch it wrong. it sounds like you watch it with commercials. I wouldn't be able to stand that. No TV show - no matter how great it is, is worth watching commercials. Read a book instead (aren't you all excited for The Hunger Games? What a book that was).

I agree. I could never go back to pre DVR days. If I am watching something live, I will pause it and go do something else so I don't have to watch commercials. For the non purist sports fan in me, it is a great way to watch a football game too (as long as you don't have some friend texting you with game reports spoiling it). I will set the game to record or pause it and start watching after it has been going about 45 min to an hour. That way, you can skip all commercials, skip half time and finish up the last part of the game right on time (just in case you have to call someone to rub their nose in it after your team wins). 🙂

If you are that big of a Chris Elliott fan, you may remember his movie "Cabin Boy."
It is truly one of the worst movies ever made, but very typical silly Chris Elliott. I loved him in Something About Mary, an all time classic.

nope no comercials, I DVR all my shows, never actually watch them when they're on but just have the schedule of when they do come on. Also it helps that not all the shows are on at the same time, meaning some are on break or their season ended while others are on.

Breaking bad
Walking dead
Sparticus
South Park

I can't watch Spartacus with the new guy...its just not the same. Spartacus should be a bad*****, not an Abercrombie model.

Game of Thrones and Homeland I think are the 2 best shows on TV these days.
American Horror Story I think is brilliant. It takes genius to turn a haunted house movie into a serial TV show.
Modern Family has fantastic writers; I don't think they've had a bad episode to date.
The Walking Dead - I watch it because it's there. This season has lagged bigtime.
Sunny in Philly - Hands down one of the funniest shows of all time. But they've had some misses.
I also want to make my opinion known that American Dad has officially become funnier than Family Guy as of late.

Also I want to let RussianJoo know that Dethklok returns April 29, 2012!!!!

Uh, YES. This has been a HUGE problem for drama and sitcom writers. While there are more outlets (cable channels and soon Netflix will stream new shows for example) the major networks have really gotten away from multi cam and single cam comedies and there simply isn't the volume there was 10-15 years ago. Which is a shame. Because, I'd watch Law and Order over THE VOICE any day of the week...

And D712, I'm sad you didn't put AD on your list. Shame on you.

Also, how come you don't like Dexter? Or Mad Men?

My very close friend was involved in that show and I never even saw a single episode. Shame on me is right! I think it might have been close to something I was developing and I avoided it on purpose. Can't recall actually.

Dexter, not a fan of the writing. Or some of the writers. ;

Mad Men, watched the pilot and fell behind, too busy to catch up on 3 seasons.

Dude...Nurse Jackie?

Gotta agree with Sons of Anarchy, totally forgot about that show.....awesome. Rescue me was also great.

Note about Tosh.0 and his standup...........a.) how is Ridiculousness (Rob Dyrdeks blatant ripoff) even legal and b.) Daniel Tosh's "True stories that I made up" is easily his best standup, and I have seen Completely Serious live.
