Yeah, I'm worried about being the guinia pig for the curriculum, but from what i hear, I think I'll probably get out of it what I put in. I'm a good self learner, even if I do like the traditional classroom approach better, so I think I'll be fine. I like the idea that we will get to be in the teaching hospital almost immediately. I've never had trouble getting a job/intern doing something I was interested in, so I don't see that changing once I get into vet school - if I want something to happen (such as more experience with food animal), I'll probably be able to make it happen through my contacts in the industry.
Warning - I'm about to rant. I hear you about the CA government thing. It's ridiculous. I make right now, what is a really good wage if I lived anywhere else in the country. Here, it gets me the cheapest 1 bedroom apartment I can find, and enough money to have one hobby (horses), thrift store furniture/clothing, and a used vehicle. I take home 50% of what I make - probably close to the same $$ as if I had a couple of kids as a single mom and worked a part time minimum wage job and got state assistence. It's extrememly frusterating. It's not going to get better. I don't know if I want to stay here long term. BUT, Davis is a school the recognized all over the country, if I do want to stay in CA it will serve me well yada yada yada.
However, as a food animal person, I know that I will have to go in really focused on what I want out of vet school.
I can totally understand if you don't want to do that. I will probably spend at least one summer out of California in the midwest trying to get experience.
Also - I'm not sure what ultimate area of food animal you are leaning towards, but I'm looking at the MPVM program and public health, NOT private practice, so California will probably continue to be an option for my career. As a food animal private practice, it might be more difficult than one geared more towards public health.
