Got my UCD invite on 2/8/11 (Tuesday) and my interview date is 2/22! Super excited of course. I'm a UCD graduate (class of 2006), a bit hard to believe its' been 5 years!

OK - I must admit I was a little freaked out by the "new curriculum" stuff. One reason I loved Davis was the quarter system and it was one of the reaons I chose Davis as a vet school. HOWEVER, I'm sure I can adjust to just about anything in order to attend my dream school pursuing my dream career, so I admit I was excited to hear that some of you c/o 2014 actually really liked the new curriculum. I am planning on attending the orientation on 2/19 - I'm semi local (Turlock) so not a huge sacrifice.

So a couple of questions for you UCD c/o whatevers that are still in school:

Why are you excited by the new curriculum?

Did you have any problem getting the amount of loans needed to pay for the first year of school? (I've worked full time in a management job for the last 5 years, and the FASFA doesn't seem to recognize that I'm going to QUIT the job to do this and thus all the $$ goes away...). I have a EFC in the range of 18500 if that helps. If I can get through the first year, I should be OK.

Does the computer they require you buy totally suck?

Regarding financial aid, my FAFSA last year did not reflect a number of really important factors, so after I got accepted I wrote a detailed letter to the financial aid office explaining the circumstances that may affect their loan decisions. They were very helpful and I wound up getting everything I needed. So don't worry about the money - after you've been accepted, just explain your concerns to the financial aid office. They know you're more than a few numbers on a piece of paper 🙂
 
Cleo227 - thanks - really good advice. Hopefully I'll geta snazzy scholarship and won't have to worry about it LOL.

BTW - I LOVED your comment on the previous page because I'm in the identical predicament - got notified the first day, have the 3rd interview of the 1st day. I posted your comment on my blog (www.bootsandsaddles4mel.blogspot.com) and told my readers that it was their job to remind me of your comment when I'm freaking out at the end of March. If you want me to pull your comment off, I will - or if you want me to give you more than anonymous credit I can do that too.

No problem, glad to help! And just for the record, the scholarship was not all that "snazzy" - but every little bit helps.
 
I agree with Cleo 😉 the ordering of things really doesn't matter much. Plus last year I was told that they do a sort of ranking system if you will. Everything from App, GRE, GPA, Recommendations, Personal Statement and Interview gets ranked say 1-10 scale. Then they add it all up and the people with the most tallies get in. At least this was my understanding when I spoke with Kim last year after my interview. I know that Admin checks SDN, so maybe they can correct me if I am wrong.

As for the new curriculum it is going to be awesome! It will be taught in blocks with Tues & Thurs afternoons are clinical skills lab slots (lots of practical fun stuff). Then the 3rd Thursday of every month you guys get to spend the whole day in the VMTH!!! We only get about 10 hours in there now for the whole year.....super jealous!! The other cool thing is that they will teach things in blocks, so you get to learn the abnormal with the normal, in a side by side comparison. Also the whole idea is to correlate everything together in a "big picture" kinda way. Ex: when you learn anatomy of the skeleton you will be learning it beside radiographs of the skeleton so that you can id the pertinent landmarks and such (this is cool because hopefully it is less needless memorizing). Lastly, you will get a case each week that everything you learn in lecture will tie in to, so to go along with the example above you may have a case with osteosarcoma or a simple fracture, and this will tie into the mechanics of the limb, the tendons and such that are affected and how it all correlates.

This is my opinion of the curriculum, I sit on the musculo-skeletal committee for the new curriculum, you could say I am excited!! 😀

i have a question as someone who has to fly in all the way from the east coast for my interview. what is the best way to get to davis? fly into san francisco? sacramento? are there buses or anything that go to davis or would i have to do something crazy/expensive like rent a car?

ALSO, any suggestions for places to stay?

my most likely scenario right now would be flying into san francisco and staying with a family friend, so if anyone knows of buses to/from davis that would be greatly appreciated!
 
I don't live in Davis, but I do live in the bay area and I would say that going from SF to Davis without a car will probably take at least a few public transportation stops and layovers. By car, the trip from SF is about 1 1/2 hours.
 
San fran is about an hour and a half from Davis. Sacramento airport is about 30 min. There are quite a few hotels really close to the school. Not sure about public transport but I'm sure it's exists between San Fran and Davis. Maybe someone else knows more about that.
 
I think you can BART to Berkeley or somewhere in the East Bay and then take a Greyhound bus to Davis, tho not sure of the details..
 
Usually if I'm doing public transport to/from SF, I do Amtrak + bart. Amtrak is kinda expensive though. The Capitol Corridor meets up with bart in Richmond and goes straight into Davis. From there, there are buses within Davis (google Unitrans).

Sacramento airport is way closer.
 
Declined my interview in an email today, so hopefully someone who hasn't received an interview invite will soon have some happy news.

Best of luck to everyone interviewing, especially those of you who have to deal with the stress of traveling a long distance to get there.

It sucks waiting, but it isn't over until it's over.

New to the Forum, but Im a senior at UC Davis undergrad right now. Anxiously awaiting an interview invite. ahhhhhhhh. I dont think ive ever checked my email so many times in a day. Im going crazy! Good luck to everyone still waiting! there is still hope!

So even though they say invitations go out until the 18th y'all think the chances of getting one are very low after the first week? 🙁

naw, don't let that worry you - davis has a history of sending them out over the course of two weeks. I remember some people on the thread last year had to wait over a weekend, and it was torture. hang in there. . . :xf:
 
Alright, well thanks Pearl. I keep my eyes open for any news. I've been accepted to other schools, but Davis is my IS and I really feel like it's the place I'm supposed to be. Just finally getting antsy I guess...
 
Good luck everyone! I remember how incredibly stressful February and March can be. Hang in there!

For those of you coming for interviews, I agree that the interview orientation isn't necessary, but if it's not too out of your way I still recommend coming. I found all of the information presented very reassuring, actually, even though I didn't have any burning questions at the time. If you just want a tour of the place, though, you can certainly do that when you interview, and student mentors are being lined up to answer questions and show you around if you want.
 
Hey catscatscats -

I have to do a ton of traveling for me current job and I've flown out of the airports you mentioned and stayed in a bunch of hotels....here's my 2 cents.

Definitely fly into Sac. It's a super easy and fast drive into Davis. I would stay at the "4 seasons" hotel in downtown davis. it's right by campus, has a great breakfast (my sister worked as a receptionist there for a couple of years and I used to stay there as a guest when I had early or late flights out of Sac). They have a shuttle service to the air port, so you wouldn't ahve to worry about transportation to Davis, and the hotel has bikes you can use to bike around campus.

So I am just wondering if anyone knows if Davis still does terminal surgeries?? I asked one current 1st year student and she wasn't sure so I thought maybe if I posted the question here, perhaps some 2nd or 3rd years might be able to tell us a little more.....

Until the 2nd or 3rd years chime in, I can offer this link indicating that Davis stopped doing terminal surgeries in 2001. Whether anything's changed since then I don't know.

I know for a fact that they did terminal surgeries on the barren heifers that we used on the main campus for a lactation class study. The vet students were practicing D.A. surgeries and they were 3rd or 4th years if I can recall. In my opinion, it was a completely justified and waste-not trade because we would have had to euthanize anyway (who doesn't want their milk and meat pumped with artificial hormones?). The vet school bought our heifers and in return we picked them up and took care of them until the procedures (we also preformed our study during this time). I thought you might want to know because I thought it was a really clever way to spread the learning around with the least amount of animals killed. I will always miss our girls though <3.
 
For small animal surgeries, spays and castrations are performed on shelter animals that are then sent back to the shelter or to their new homes if they are already adopted. I believe the food animal surgery labs include both terminal and non-terminal procedures. These labs are all during third year; during fourth year surgeries are done as part of clinical rotations on client-owned or shelter animals.

I have flown into both SFO and SAC commercially and private and you absolutely are better off flying into SAC. There is no wait getting through security, the airport is not crowded, and much less likely to have delays.

The drive from SAC is painless and the one from SFO can be painful.
 
I love my iPhone right now b/c it just told me I got an interview at UC Davis. Woohoo! Congrats to everyone else who's hard work has earned them an interview spot too!

does anyone know if they only send out one batch of invites a day or if they send out multiple batches?

(so I can stop obsessively checking my email for the day)
 
Through the power of deduction you and all of us on here, may be able to crack a part of the "Davis Interview Send Out Protocol."

I received my interview email around 11 am

If someone else received theirs at time in the afternoon we may be able to conclude that they go out in batches.

(Just trying to alleviate the anxiety for everyone) :luck:🙂:luck:
 
Just got my rejection e-mail. Kinda bummed, but not surprised at all. I only applied this year because I was peer-pressured into it. Well, maybe not peers, since they were all like my dad's age or older.

It's kind of a load off my mind. I wanted to have a fun summer without stressing about starting vet school in the fall, anyway. And now I don't have to worry about shopping for interview clothes! :laugh:

Me too. I knew what it was going to say. My co-worker gave me a beer out of the fridge to make me feel better. Here's to next year!:laugh:

Oh no!!!! I'm so sorry. 🙁 Is this your first time applying? (sorry, I have trouble keeping track of everyone's schools and stuff)

This is not my last one. I have an interview at Illinois on the 21, have yet to hear from Wisconsin, and have been accepted to Ohio. However, I would go to Davis in a heartbeat, despite my acceptance elsewhere. This is my second application cycle, which is why I think I got in ANYWHERE.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for Wisconsin for you. :xf:

I'm using chocolate instead of beer, haha. I was in line at a deli when I got the e-mail (I'm another one who's mad at my smartphone, I guess), so no one other than my sister knows, because I then texted her about it. All she had to say was, "Duhh." That totally helped. 🙄
 
I went to undergrad in Davis and have lived here since, and I would definitely recommend against flying into SFO unless you are saving a significant amount of money, just for convenience and to limit your stress around the time of your interview (we'll all be stressed anyway).

If you fly into SAC (SMF airport) as far as public transport to davis, you can always take a taxi, the davis airporter (like a super shuttle) for ~$18, or if you really want to save there are sacramento buses (the 42A/B) which can take you to Davis for about a buck- but will take about an hour, and may not have a stop near your hotel. Otherwise the drive by car/taxi/shuttle should only be 20-30 minutes, and the airport is pretty small which makes it really easy to get in and out of. As for hotels no matter where you stay in town the hotel should be decent and it shouldn't be too hard to get to campus either by bike, or bus, just remember the Vet school is in the southwest corner right off the main campus.

I went on the priceline thingy where you name your price an got a rental car for one day for $45. Not so bad consider a taxi round trip would probably got as much if not more.

First time, but TONS of family pressure. I come from a family in which you either get in first time or it doesn't count. My entire extended family except for my twin brother and I have professional degrees or doctorates. I'll be re-applying but I get to hang my head in shame at family gatherings all year because failure is not an option. They act like it's contagious. So, one more year of night shift and trying to fit in experience and boost my GPA without getting too sleep deprived.

Congrats on Ohio. Good luck for Davis, I'm pulling for you.

Ooh boy, that sounds like no fun. That's WAY more pressure than anyone needs, especially people like us who are already perfectionists.
Hopefully YOU know that they are wrong, and that some of the best vets took multiple tries to get in, because it sounds like you would be hard-pressed to change any of their opinions. Keep your chin up. If Wisconsin doesn't happen, you can get some good feedback doing file reviews, and next year will be your year. It will go faster than you think. Gosh, the VMCAS will be up in like 4 months!
 
FYI: for those who aren't able to attend the interview orientation on Saturday but are still curious about the new curriculum, It sounds like we will be able to film the talk on the curricular changes and give out a link to this talk along with the link to the recording of the interview panel.
