Yea maybe I'll wait until Thursday. And I have to say, I love love love Davis, (top choice for sure), but I'm also pretty excited about just becoming a vet in general. So although I will be a little sad (okay okay a lot) it will be mixed with excitement about what's to come 🙂 It will all work out the way it's supposed to....

So maybe my wishful thinking paid off and no one from SDN is going on the maybe/no list for davis!!! Congrats everyone!!! My roommate said when she got into Vet school (she's a 4th year now) people started calling her Dr. just so she could get used to it, and she did that to me and it was so weird but awesome that it will be true enough in a little over 4 years!!

I feel like I'm going a little nutty... has anyone heard anything back, good or bad? I hope that I haven't heard anything yet is a good sign... AHH!!
 
I know im thinking way ahead here, but does anyone know where we can find info on what the school considers a comparable health insurance plan to the university provided one? Id like to keep my own insurance but am afraid it might not be up to snuff and dont want to submit a waiver and have it denied. Rather just know up front and see what my insurance co offers.

Edit: Nevermind, found some info from last year.

well, shoot, I really want to accept my seat but I can't decide on a computer!!! Everyone is telling me that I want a Mac...but I've always been a PC fan. Does anyone in the 2014 class ever use their tablet as a tablet? I think that is the one thing that is intriguing me the most.

I've never owned a mac, but I chose it over the tablet. Thought it would be a nice switch-up, very portable, plus I think a 12 inch screen on the tablet is just too small! I guess I've always wanted to get a mac but could never justify the cost, so now that I *have* (kinda) to get one I'm excited!

Okay so I know I'll be class of 2015 with you, but one of my roommates is a 4th year at Davis right now and she used the tablet feature all the time in lectures-- also the PCs come with OneNote which really helps to organize all the lecutres, but she said the mac people have other ways to organize the notes. Basically in her experience she used the tablet all the time the first year, but eventually just started typing notes because you can't really write that fast, but said it's REALLY helpful for labeling diagrams and pictures, and probably the best for radiology to pinpoint what is being described. Also my own experiences-- I've always had PCs but at the lab I work at we use Macs, and I just tend to get really frustrated when I can't find certain functions in the mac versions of powerpoint or excel that are second nature to me in the pc versions, so for all of those reasons I will probably be choosing the tablet even if it does cost more.

I've been debating back and forth PC/mac as well. Haven't done the official seat acceptance yet so wasn't aware that we had to choose which computer already, not a fan of having to decide now. But I'm leaning heavily towards the tablet - I've just always been a PC person and a tablet sounds awesome for labeling diagrams and such. Plus, I'm justifying the extra money on the tablet in that Davis will be much cheaper than an OOS.

This is why I didn't go into marketing, :laugh:. J/K. It's a hard choice. Basically for me what made the difference is wanting to try something new. Not everyone can be swayed as easily to switch over. 😳 Maybe I'll change my mind, but I figured I could always get an external tablet to use for specific classes that will really benefit from it's use.

Edit: I know last year people were switching their choices, wonder if that'll be an option for us too?
 
Teatime--There are a lot of Mac people out there that rave about them and love them, so I'm sure you'll be fine once you get used to the new system, but I'm bad with change 🙂 = Another reason a tablet may make the transition easier for me... back in undergrad I rarely toted around my laptop to classes because I liked being able to write on the notes, and print them out-- seemed like most of the current vet students who were commenting before going on spring break thought that would be insane-- so the tablet kind of allows me to make an easier transition between handwriting and typing notes during lectures during the first few weeks, and gives me more options without having to buy more equipment (I heard somewhere the ipad also has a tablet like function that they don't advertise that heavily if you're going to get another cool gizmo 😉 )

Yeah, I'm still mainly of the mode of writing everything on paper, although for certain classes (physio, where my teacher talked at break-neck speed) I've typed up notes. It seems like from what people have said that writing everything on a tablet is too slow...so I'm hoping the transition won't be too bad, I've used macs before, just never owned one myself.

Also, I started making calls today about apartments. I'm excited to go up and check things out soon!
 
I like the tablet, but really I don't think there is a bad choice between the two computers. It's more a matter of preference. Reliability on the two computers has been anecdotally pretty similar - Nyanko's mac jumped ship last week and I know of one person's Lenovo that was crappy out of the box and was replaced pretty quickly. I'm sure there were probably other instances, but nothing like in former years with the infamous Toshi(t)bas. Only complaint I have about my tablet is that the screen resolution is kinda bleh when compared to the macs, so kinda sucked for the last radiology test when she gave it to us on pdf, but not a big deal in the big scheme of things. I like being able to write on my notes and I like that the PCs have 4 years of accident insurance in case I drop it on the floor or something, which isn't true for the macs. Myself and all the people in my row with the tablets mostly write on the tablets - I only typed with one class really because the prof talked faster than an auctioneer.

Anyone looking for apts, my 4th year neighbors are moving out of the other side of the duplex where I live in mid-June and they would like to find someone to take over and continue their lease, which is good as then you'd get to move in before the first day of school. It's a 2/1 located one block to downtown and a 15 min bike ride and short drive to school (and three blocks from the cupcake shop!). The landlord is great and is pretty accommodating about pets and likes renting to vet students. Drop me a pm if you're interested and I can get you contact info!

hey all...

i remember the stress of picking a computer - and there really is no win or lose. the school does pick great computers.

that said. i love my mac. BUT - if i had to do it all over again... i would get the tablet. i grew up with PCs and this is my first mac. but i am super jealous of my classmates with the tablet. I even bought a tablet attachment for my mac, and it doesn't compare. I will say that radiographs are a bit easier to read on my mac - but not enough to make it worth the lack-of-tablet function. The tablet is also great for sharing notes and drawings among classmates/labmates.

but, again - both great computers. If you can't part from the PC user or mac user inside . . . no need to stress. 🙂. pros and cons are fairly equal between the computers, it would seem, in my class.

I wouldn't say it jumped ship, the hard drive just flipped out and decided that there was no longer a partition with an operating system on it. No hardware broke, and all it took was a reformat and time machine install and it was back to (last time I backed up) normal.

I like my Mac and don't think I would use the tablet feature enough to justify the extra cost of the tablet, FWIW.

Oh ya and the last radiology exam didn't look any better on the mac - you can only do so much with crappy pdf compression of rads. :laugh:

OOOh - and embarrassing story that I was waiting to share until AFTER I got accepted:

I feel like my interview went well - only a couple questions slowed me but I figured them out and kept going. I even coherently explained the "why me" question at the end UNTIL my last sentence when I mentioned that I didn't get in this year and how hard I've worked the past year and that the year off had only solidified my drive to be a vet...*cue bursting into childish tears with the adcom members awkwardly handing me tissues and telling me that it's ok to cry, while tears fall down my face and I apologize over and over* 😳

I may be a mean, cruel person but I always kind of snickered inside when they tell the story about the girl who burst into tears when they asked her why she wanted to become a vet. I couldn't IMAGINE crying in front of 3 people I didn't know and KNEW that I would come across as professional and poised and would never CRY in an interview. FAMOUS. LAST. WORDS.

Oh yeah, and my co-workers and I had a deal, there were only 3 things I wasn't supposed to do in an interview: pass out, vomit, or cry. whoops!

Karma, karma....

Just thought I'd share that with ya'll.... haha!
 
Hey everyone! Congrats on getting in. Would love to add my 2 cents to the Mac vs PC discussion.
So I too, love my Mac, and while there are very few cases that I feel like I am missing out on functionality...I also love all of the extras that Mac comes with, like: a camera, to video chat with my friends and family and BF back home. A dvd/cd player. The screen resolution is amazing.
And this coming from a girl who cracked her screen and then brought it in to apple expecting to fork over all of my financial aid....turns out that they covered the Accidental damage!! For FREE!!!!! They said that since I bought the apple care and that shows good intent, that they would cover the first damage.
Secondly, for those of you who love mac but really want the functionality of the tablet, get an IPad! There are quite a few apps that allow you to upload your pdf's to a dropbox account and annotate on them, with a stylus and everything (iannotate). Also there are note taking apps that organize your handwritten notes into a cute little bookshelf for each course (noteshelf). Furthermore, some of the 4th years have all of their notes stored on their ipad and they just pull up notes when they get a hard case in. Which is great, because the ipad is so small and easy to carry around. Lastly, while one note is great, it is (from what I have heard) a pain to save it in pdf form, apparently you have to save each lecture tab individually. This would be hard to convert to use in the ipad, unless you start converting them into pdfs from the beginning.

I know I am biased, but Macs are so easy to use, very intuitive. I will admit that when I got my first one, there was a little getting used to it. But nowadays, if you have an ipod touch or iphone, you pretty much know how to use it already.

I agree with minikittie 🙂

I love my mac - I got it in 2005 (mac book G4) and it's still running strong with zero issues, although less and less programing will run on Tiger, so I was looking at getting a new mac this year. That being said, I looked seriously at the tablet before deciding. I went with the mac because: I use my itouch a LOT and it's just easier to integrate into a mac computer, I've had NOTHING but isssues with my PC laptop at work over the last 5 years, my boyfriend uses the tablet at work and it has been extremely buggy. BUT - your experience may differ.

Before I knew Davis required their computer, I wanted to buy a desktop mac and pair it with an ipad or an air - kind of dissapointed that I have to get another lap top because now I can't justify getting a desk top in any way. Will probably look for a monitor/keyboard to use at home and still might get an ipad - haven't decided. There doesnt' seem much point to have an itouch AND an ipad! LOL. Excpet for being able to get the network on the ipad.

What do you guys think?

BTW - I'm sure this is going to come up on the Facebook page (I'm a member and I'm pretty sure most of you have figured out who I am by now.....) but are any of you interested in meeting over the summer? I'm moving back to the area in mid-May (i'll be an hour away) and would love to meet some of my classmates early.
 
Still undecided. I've been a long time PC user and feel I can get more out of it. The tablet seems very efficient and easy to write notes on. That being said, I got an ipod touch recently and love it! I want to give Mac a try but worry about the learning curve.

Does anyone know the exchange policy? Pls send me the link because I can't find it.

Is it too early to bring up housing??? As someone who's lived on-campus for my whole undergrad experience, I'm totally lost on how to do the apartment thing. I'm also on the east coast right now and have no idea how to coordinate this from so far away. Where do vet students live? Will the fact that we are on semesters and the rest of the campus is on quarters affect our housing options???? aghhh 😕
 
Alright so I have a question for those of you who are currently UCD students. I'm a guy who applied this year and got in at Davis and another out of state. Davis is right down the road from where I grew up so cost wise and being close to home would be nicer but I'm going for food animal focus. I know davis is well known for their equine and small animal but there isn't much in terms close at hand cattle operations other than a smattering of dairies down by elk grove. I was wondering if anyone knows how much exposure the food animal folks get and whether it would be better to go to a midwest school there will be more opportunities to work with cattle just because its such a high producing animal ag area. I'm aware of the externship opportunity down at the visalia large animal hospital but thats only gonna be 4th year and I don't want to be missing out on chances to improve my skills in the 3 years before that. Thanks for any help you guys can give.

I'm IS but deciding between Davis and Wisconsin. Wisconsin is offering a free flight to visit. Should I take it?

or is davis just THAT much better....

I think someone from last year said they were #6 on the alternate and they ended up getting in. It could still happen!

I think a lot of info can be found on the davis wiki apartment page (daviswiki.org/apartments) and craigslist, that is if you're interested in an apt. vs. a house. It'll at least give you an idea of what each apt complex offers and contact info. Some complexes I contacted do have more issues with leases starting later in September, but are willing to work with current tenants to figure out who wants to move out early and most seem to have at least a few people moving out of their leases sooner (summertime and August) Plus, like everyone has mentioned, there will be more info on current students who need roommates and 4th years moving out, etc. coming up soon.

Living alone... eh, a little more expensive but worth it in my opinion. Also, my SO will most likely be moving up with me at some point so I gotta make space for him. I'm justifying the cost by telling myself I've saving money on IS tuition. 🙄
 
Im going to be looking for roomies! Or maybe filling a room in someone else's place, but I think I will like to have people around to study and hang out with!

Isn't WI OOS tuition ridiculously cheap? I know we're all like, DAVIS DAVIS DAVIS. But if you think it's worth it to check out, why not? You might be braver than me with regards to midwest weather...

Food animal focus here.

Some of the food animal vets I talked to prior to getting admitted expressed their concern about UCD's food animal opportunities and focus over the last couple of years - especially in the poultry field. However, I feel that with the diversity of types ag around here, I'll be able to get experience doing what I want to do - even if it might be extra work on my part. I also would like to work in CA after graduation, and so I think that it will be improtant for me to get very faimliar with the "culture" here from a vet point of view.

Do you want to end up in CA ultimately working? Or are you planning on going back to the midwest? What types of food animal are you interested in? There are several large poultry producers here, that are much closer to Davis than Visailia is. Most larger beef operations are going to be found fresno area, but the entire central valley has dairies etc. The weather is nice here..... 🙂.

It's a hard decision. Both top vets for the company I work for are NOT UCD vets. One's from Tennessee, one's from Auburn or Georgia (can't remember).

This is kind of rambl-y - sorry. I'm finnally starting to settle from getting the news on Monday and I just cannot keep my head screwed on straight right now!

Living with the SO for at least the first year, and commuting. Depending on how it works out, I may be looking for a room in west sac/Davis where I can stay a couple of days a week. So for right now, not looking for housing.
 
My main animal interest is cattle but I'm open to other food animal such as dairy, sheep, goats, and swine (obviously not in CA). Davis is my instate so I'm aware of where cattle opportunities are and such. That's partially why I worry and figure if I went there I'd have to do like you and put more effort in to get the experience I need. I'm not one who necessarily wants to be in california only, especially with the way our state been going government wise, legislation, and educational budget. I know it would be a bigger factor in terms of having to take the more difficult CA boards if I went out of state and wanted to come back. Are you worried at all about how the new curriculum will work since we will essentially be the test class? And don't worry bout the ramblin'. Happens to me all the time.
